[Samba] Re: [solved] encoding problem with samba 227 ad rh80

2003-03-03 Thread Thierry ITTY
all turns around the new red hat choice of i18n settings with utf8
i just couldn't have some consistent behaviour between windows/samba/linux

putting LANG=fr_FR (instead of fr_FR.UTF-8) in /etc/sysconfig/i18n solved
this problem
btw it also solved some others

may this help others too

[Samba] Group Policy

2003-03-03 Thread Stefan Schlesinger
Hi there,
  another question from me .
is it possible to set any group policys in samba PDC like in Windows
Active
Directory ? - Example: Setting all clients dont shutdown if no admin
does so.
or : Setting all Users have to change their Passwords every 5 weeks
and so on. -

If so ... how can i do this ?
But i won't think that samba can do any Active Directory things .. isnt  ;
-)) - is there another solution to do this ?

If you have all the windows users also defined on the solaris box
(locally in /etc/passwd, via nis or ldap), then just

- set "security = domain"
- join the samba server to the AD domain

If you don't want to define the users on solaris, use winbind.

[Samba] port usage

2003-03-03 Thread dharanesh dharanesh
Our Client software used samba protocol,If there is no firewall case , this
protocol work properly from remote site. All of firwall configuration open (
this mean is all of port open ).
Samba work very well, but if some constrain put in, it doesn't work.

1)I would like to know about port usage of samba protocol.
I think snmpd, nmpd daemon used some port number. i can see /etc/service
file.
Client software has no daemon, i think may be server request to some port of
client.
That means samba protocol used another port except snmpd, nmpd port.

My question is
1. I would like to know about port usage of samba protocol.
2. My client want to set exact port number for firewall, because he don't
want to open
all of port for security isseu.

i think it's probably a link internally but
you can change the location of "my documents" to be wherever you want.
I just put it on a mapped drive

linux doesn't do that whole profile thing...
so i guess in that sense it's windows specific
but really it's just copying files back and forth so there should be no
difference in file transfer speeds between linux and windows

The best way to do this is using an NTConfig.POL file located in the
NETLOGON share root directory. You create this file using the Group Policy
Editor. In it you can specify where you want the "My Documents" folder to
be located.

You need to learn correct management procedures for each application. The
network deployment needs for MS Windows applications is not consistent
across all applications.

Again, as Bradley said, these matters are NOT samba specific. Even if you
used a pure MS Windows network the requirements to do this are identical.

Why use LinNeighborhood? You could just as easily use konqueror and in the
URL part type in smb:/ to view all workgroups/domains on your network and
to navigate your servers.

This feature requires that hte kdenetwork3-lan and kdebase3-samba packages
are installed.

You can also save bookmarks so that you can readily go to any particular
resource. YMMV.

[Samba] Disappearing Shares?

2003-03-03 Thread John
I am new to Linux and running SuSE V8.0 with KDE desktop and
Samba 2.2.7 on a small bnetwor5k which also has a Windows NT
PC and a notebook.

On the Linux PC's I have used LinNeighborhood to mount the
various shares and can readily view files on the Linux PC's, or on
the windoze machines.

I have had a number of occasions where I have had to power down
my main Linux PC, and far more often the windoze PC (which is
also presently my gateway to the net via ADSL).

My problem is that although I have set preferences in
LinNeighborhood to memorise mounted shares and remount at next
startup, this doesn't happen. I may have restarted my Linux PC and
the gone to Konqueror to view or transfer a file from the windows
PC and find that the share has either disappeared totally from the
mount point (home/john/mnt) or I can access the drive, but cannot
see any files.

What I really want is to set the shares so that if a machine has to
down, all shares are automagically reconnected, and files are
visible. Couls someone advise me on how best to accomplish this?

John

Uhm, sorry, I thought I already did everything correctly, but part of my
problem might have been actually my fault: I remembered seeing shares
which I shouldn't have seen, but I now did more specific tests, reviewed
all options, and "browseable = no" seems to work fine.

"Seems", because I still get a strange behaviour with the special
[homes] share, but this might be due to its special way of working.

Please note that I'm talking about visibility of the share in the
network neighbourhood tree, without having the network resource
expressly added.

> if it's not so as descripted, then please send me smb.conf and
> versionnr. / version of used windows (incl. sp).

The clients are Win2000 SP3.
The relevant smb.conf sections are below (I customized a smb.conf from
an IBM developerWorks tutorial).
What happens is: user "goofy" logs in, browses the network neighbourhood
tree, and CAN see a "goofy" share. I suppose this happens because the
share is automatically added in his network resources, right?

The strange thing is that, when goofy logs out and another user logs in,
this different user can still see (but not access) goofy's share! Maybe
the share is permanently added in the tree view, for ALL users, once a
user added it to its resources?

Thanks.

Hello
recently I set up XFS share under samba , and played from Win2K

Win2K never DENY ACL entries ,
so for example for a XFS file with acl:

# owner: a
user::r--
group::rwx
other::rwx
Win2K security tab shows for user "a":
  Read & exec =
  Read= Allowed
  Write =

But in fact, POSIX ACL will allow user "a" to read from the file
and deny write or execute the file , as posix acl will not consult any
other ACL entries, after founding appropriate user: entry.

So, shown by Win2K flags are wrong, and must be instead :
  Read & exec = Deny
  Read= Allowed
  Write   = Deny

as NT ACL logic suppose, as far as know(?), that in case
father ACL entries will be consulted, so in this case NT user suppose
that he has "rwx" rights on the file due to other::rwx rule
 (-> Everybody, Full Access=Allowed)

but when tried to write - receive Permission Denied.

So that is a samba bug, as samba must have send DENY for "write" and
"execute" and ALLOW for "read" for this user's file ("user::r--") ,
but now it just sends ALLOW for "read".
I have samba-2.2.7a,

Re: [Samba] Samba, CUPs & Win2000 printing

2003-03-03 Thread jason
...done some more investigating on the Win2000 - Samba/CUPS print problem
I posted earlier. As I said before, everything works fine using Samba as
PDC with Win2000 client on a test network except for printing to this
printer. I can print to this printer from the Linux machine through X ok.

If I try an

#echo "^MHello World^L" | smbclient "//sambaserver/printername"

...from a shell on the Linux/Samba machine I get:

tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME

I have verified that I am using the correct case when when typing the
share names as I've heard that smbclient is case sensitive. If I try from
the DOS prompt on the Win2000 client (echo Hello^L >
\\sambaserver\printername) I get "The network path was not found" but I
can ping the Samba server using the machine name from the Win2000 client?

If I do an:

#smbclient -L //sambaserver -Uusername

The printer share name appears in the list?

I also tried adding the printer to the Win2000 client using
"http://sambaserver:631/printers/printername"; but I then get a message:

"Could not connect to printer. Access denied"

Are there any other tests I can do to narrow down where the problem could
be? I've spent days trying to figure this out and havent really managed to
get anywhere?

..I apologise once again for my basic Linux knowledge at the moment - I'm
getting there.

The one thing that I notice it that the owner/group gets flagged as the

I am thinking that it may be something with umask on the directory tree. Is

[Samba] Permission changes cannot be saved.

2003-03-03 Thread Jayatillake, Rohana
I have setup a samba share on a Solaris 8 box with win2k domain
authentication. I cannot change the share permission from the Computer
management window in win2K and says changes cannot be saved. I have
already set 'nt acl support = yes' in smb.conf file.

Any suggestions to fix this.

[Samba] Authentication to Samba share fails

2003-03-03 Thread Jayatillake, Rohana
Hi

I am trying to authenticate to a samba share on a Solaris 8 box through
Win2k domain. When I try to map to share it prompts for the username and
password. It doesn't accept the username and password and keep on
popping up to enter the same. When I had a look at the machine log I
found this,

Smb_pam_error _handler:PAM: session setup failed: cannot make/remove
entry for session

Pam_session rejected the session for "domain name\username"

But when I run wbinfo -g and wbinfo -u I get all the groups and users in
the domain without any problem.

Has anyone got a solution for this.

Hi all!
I solved my problem.
RH8 somehow automaticly blocks port 139 in it's default install of the
firewall.
That's why the hostname will not be lookup up from another workstation.

[Samba] POSIX to NT ACL bug

2003-03-03 Thread Sergey Zhitomirsky

Hello
recently I set up XFS share under samba , and played from Win2K
with ACL entries of shared files,
and noticed that
Win2K never DENY ACL entries ,
so for example for a XFS file with acl:

 # owner: a
 user::r--
 group::rwx
 other::rwx

Win2K security tab shows for user "a":
   Read & exec =
   Read= Allowed
   Write =

But in fact, POSIX ACL will allow user "a" to read from the file
and deny write or execute the file , as posix acl will not consult any
other ACL entries, after founding appropriate user: entry.

So, shown by Win2K flags are wrong, and must be instead :
   Read & exec = Deny
   Read= Allowed
   Write   = Deny

as NT ACL logic suppose, as far as know(?), that in case
father ACL entries will be consulted, so in this case NT user suppose
that he has "rwx" rights on the file due to other::rwx rule
  (-> Everybody, Full Access=Allowed)

but when tried to write - receive Permission Denied.

So that is a samba bug, as samba must have send DENY for "write" and
"execute" and ALLOW for "read" for this user's file ("user::r--") ,
but now it just sends ALLOW for "read".

 I have samba-2.2.7a,
 ./configure --with-acl-support --with-ssl --with-smbmount --disable-cups
  --with-smbwrapper --with-vfs --with-libsmbclient --disable-swat

Sergey.

Just getting a smb server going. Have some users who's login names are

mapping is taking place however, the authentication doesn't. Would the fact
that the Linux authentication is done by an LDAP server matter? The
passwords are the same.

Ok what about making it so that LDAP isn't an issue. Is this possible? I'm
not making this a PDC... Just a mountable directory to all users. Is there

Yes this is an interop for ClearCase, however I can not even got to the

The problem is "The way I understand":

Our production server is set to security = SERVER and this works, however it
really. You see if a user logins as MAT "uppercase" and logs out and logins
as mat "lowercase" the samba connection is still there. To fix this issue a
user must reboot or do an ipconf /release /renew. The same issue is when
clearcase_albd creates the contain space on the server if this happens after
a user checks out a file the user must reboot.

I would like to change the settings to security = DOMAIN, because it should
drop the connection as soon as the operation is complete. Right now I can
not get the smbstatus to report userid when I connect the share. I get an
error Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Excellent, it's compiling now, I'll run the rpm -Uhv tomorrow morning
before users arrive. I'll let you know how it goes.

some of the bugs have been worked out in 3.0. Give it a shot. But i

RE: [Samba] Default settings for print drivers

> I'm having a problem where printing preferences (advanced
> settings) are
> not remembered for 2.2.7a. This behavior differs from installed
> printers not associated with samba.

Jerry (or anyone else), here's more info on that:

Samba's behaviour differs from windows servers, and it makes installed
features (device settings) on printers unusable/inaccessable.

For example, one driver where installable device settings change
printing preferences options is the HP LaserJet 8100 Series PCL (the
driver comes with win2000).

Install the driver on the samba server, under device settings tab,
installable options, let's say that the duplex unit is installed, and
that the accessory output bin is HP 3000-Sheet Stapler/Stacker. This'll
give us two installable features to work with.

After applying, now under the general tab, printing preferences, we'll
take advantage of the duplex unit and set the layout (duplex) to be flip
on long edge. Apply. Now under advanced, we'll change Stapler from one
staple to two staples. Apply, OK.

After OK, viewing the properties again shows that it appears to have
remembered the settings on the server.

If a non-printer admin installs this printer to the client from the
samba share, the installable options are lost (no duplex, no stapler),
and the printing preferences are back to defaults. This is a problem,
as non-printer admins can't do the things they need to do, and because
they are not printer admins, they cannot "install" options with device
settings.

If a printer admin installs this printer to the client from the samba
share, a curious thing happens: the installable device settings remain,
correct, but the printing preferences get set back to their defaults on
the client, AND on the server! So the action of a printer admin
installing the printer to a client causes the printing preferences to be
lost on the server (and the client).

If these printing preferences are set either again on the server, or by
the printer admin client, they get changed in both the client and the
samba server.

Okay, last one. So for printing preferences (layout) i turn duplex back
to flip on long edge, and advanced, stapler: to two staples. OK. Now I
open up word or i.e. or notepad or whatever... Print... Properties...
I've lost my duplex and staple again, and not just the preferences, but
the device settings no longer appear installed (there is no place to
change duplex settings, or specify the # of staples). Though if I go to
Settings... Printers... the settings appear to be there. But no
applications can use them? What gives?

This is 2.2.7a-1, btw. Do your tests confirm similar behaviour, or is
this one of those "works for me" things? Does 3.x behave any better in
this area?

Re: [Samba] Can see Linux box, but no shares from windows

2003-03-03 Thread samba
I can ping the server... by ip and even by hostname...
in linux, using jags i can mount the dirs i shared... so i wonder if the
permissions are a problem...
i set the username and the password to my w2k user and pwd, so that shouldnt
be a problem either...

somehow i think it's more a w2k problem than a linux problem... somehow, i
think, w2k cant resolve the samba hostname into an ip, i guess, or something
like that..

Re: [Samba] Samba 2.2.7 problem

2003-03-03 Thread Sutto Zoltan
I checked the /etc/init.d/smb script file

it tries to kill it's running processes using killproc function in
/etc/init.d/functions file.
killproc calls pidofproc function to find pids of given program (nmbd) and
it gives back all the PID related to nmbd.
1834 1833
in my earlier example
1833 is nmbd main process
1834 is nmbd child process

the killproc tries to kill 1834 first and after that 1833.
Killing nmbd's child process first makes a new nmbd process (not a child
one).
That is why I get the error message.

Killing the child process first by hand (kill -TERM $nmbdchildpid) cause the
same effect.
Killing the parent nmbd process kills the child too as smb script should
have to.

Is there anybody who can able to help me to fix it?

Thanx

Zoltan Sutto

ps.:
PID files are in /var/run/samba/(s/n)nmbd.pid

Killproc function in /etc/init/function does not use these files to kill
processes.

re[2]: [Samba] librsync ??

2003-03-03 Thread Greg Freemyer
Andrew,

Thanks for the effort, but librsync is not rsync.

Both used to be part of the overall samba effort, but even then did not share source
code.

Just last week, librsync got its own sourceforge project site.

See http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=256348

Now I just need to figure out how to compile it in cygwin.

Does it really fail to print, or just show that error message (yet print
ok)?

If those various flavors are NT/2000/XP, and you can still print, this
happens when:
1. Your users are local admins of their machines
2. They have installed the drivers locally (rather than from the print$
share).
3. spools has not been disabled for that share with use client driver =
yes (or globally with disable spoolss = yes).

Best thing to do is fix #2. Doing the "use client driver = yes" thing
will suffice if your users need to be local admins, but it's "an ugly
hack." Check out "use client driver" in man smb.conf

RE: [Samba] Locking Problems with Samba 2.2.7

2003-03-03 Thread Glenn Scherb
Mark,

Have you tried setting these globals:

kernel oplocks = No
oplocks = No
level2 oplocks = No

I routinely do this on all my shares that must house Access databases or
MS Outlook *.pst files.

Subject: [Samba] Locking Problems with Samba 2.2.7

I have a new Dell server running Red Hat 8.0 Linux. I just downloaded
and installed Samba 2.2.7 from the Red Hat Web site. I am having trouble
with Microsoft Access 2000 data base locking. The program runs in a
runtime version (.mde)on each client. Only the database(.mdb), the
permissions file(.mdw) and the lock file (.ldb) are resident on the
server running Samba. Each computer can individually access the share
and open and run the database. The program in question is set up for
multiple users. It runs fine on a Windows peer-peer network but won't
allow multiple users from the server. Any suggestions on where to look
to find the problem?

[Samba] printer configuration issue

2003-03-03 Thread haiku
I've installed Samba 2.2.7a on my SuSE 8.1 system in an effort to
persuade it to act as a print server on my LAN, which consists of it
and 6 Windows desktops of various flavors. Right away it seemed to
allow file sharing and printing from DOS and became browsable from the
Network Neighborhood, but I can't get it to print from Windows. I
keep getting a Status of "Access denied, unable to connect", even when
simply trying to print a test page. A perusal of the Samba logs has
been inconclusive as has a poring through both Samba and SuSE
documentation. I'm guessing that it's a stupid permission or
authentication configuration I've overlooked, but it's making me
crazy!

I tried to keep my smb.conf very simple:

# This is /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf

[global]
netbios name = penguin
workgroup = workgroup
log level = 2
log file = /var/log/samba.log
security = share
[pub]
path = /home/public
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
read only = no
[printers]
path = /var/spool/samba
printable = yes
guest ok = yes

[Samba] Samba 2.2.7 problem

2003-03-03 Thread Sutto Zoltan
I am running Samba 2.2.7 on a Red Hat 7.3 box.

1. I have some windows xp computer on my network.
With the following settings the Samab can not able to win the election.
local master = No
preferred master = Yes
domain master = No

changing to
local master = Yes
It can. How these settings should work?

2. When samba is running (ps -ax)
 1828 ?S 0:00 smbd -D
 1833 ?S 0:00 nmbd -D
 1834 ?S 0:00 nmbd -D

When I trying to restart/stop smb I receive the following error message
Shutting down SMB services:[ OK ]
Shutting down NMB services: /etc/init.d/smb: kill: (1834) - No such process
   [ OK ]

After this (ps -ax) I still have a running nmbd process
 1897 ?S 0:00 nmbd -D

What's wrong? How can I fix it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx

Re: [Samba] Can see Linux box, but no shares from windows

2003-03-03 Thread samba
I use webmin. It's pretty good.

I got a hunch that this problem has something to do with windows not being
able to resolve the name from the linux box, since everything works fine
under linux.
I wonder if anyone knows anything about that.

I did actually... The first time I tried to set this all up
I got to the same roadblock...

So I nuked my laptop (planned anyway to clean up the partitions and all)
reinstalled redhat, and tried SWAT...

Same roadblock both times.

I think this time I am a little closer that the last. Ive gotten a few good

Did you have "acl-dev" installed when compiling Samba? Of not, the
configure-process will kick ACL-support but continue compiling although
you specified --with-acl-support.

Make sure your smbd has ACL-support built in:

  ldd /usr/sbin/smbd

The output should contain something like

  "libacl.so.1 => /lib/libacl.so.1"

So long,
Max

Hi Steve,

I do another test today, I changed my desktop to Gnome and use "Nautilus"

It show that some wrong with the KDE's Konqueror or something else, I will
search the KDE's website wheather it's known problems or only my problem.

Right now, I'm using LinuxNeihgbourhood to browse the network and access
shares because I like to use KDE Desktop.

I have the basic smb.conf that I took from the example folder and made no
changes except opening the public share. (unfortunately I am at work so I
cant show exactly what I have). I also added the workgroup = line under
[global] and added my windows workgroup.

I am currently having two problems.
The first is that I can SEE the linux box from windows. Its listed, its
there.
I try to explore it, but I cannot. There is no share. Windows gives me the
curious error that a duplicate name exists on the network and I should
rename it.

On the linux side, when I try to do a smbclient -L myhostname I am now
getting what I beleive said NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILED... It had worked properly
before. I am not sure what I could of changed to cause this.

All I am looking to do it set up a very basic share at this point.
Can anyone suggest to me a very basic smb.conf so I can compare with mine?
Or even provide me any tips? I think I am going to start from scratch with
it and try again. I have hit this problem twice now though so I am concerned
what the issue is. There is no firewall. Encrypted passwords is on...

I can provide more information when I get home if I am missing something(I
am sure I am)

Thank you for any assistance.

Josh,

Thanks for the response !! I tried rpcclient but I don't see anywhere where
it will let me control services.
I double-checked, and found out that it's the rpcclient supplied with
samba-tng which has service-control.
from 'man rpcclient' from a samba-tng system:

These commands provide functionality similar to the
 Windows NT Service Control Manager.

  svcenum

Is there a Samba utility to control NT Services or does anyone know of a
way to remotely restart NT services from a linux box ?

IIRC you can use rpcclient for that. Not sure tho.

[Samba] File attribute problem

2003-03-03 Thread Sandor Toth
Hello,

I installed the latest Samba (2.2.7a) on Compaq Tru64 Unix (v 5.1a). it
works fine but I have a small problem.
For example I have a file called test.txt on the server.
The owner of the file is toths:
-rwxrwxrwx 1 tothsusers 2 Mar 3 18:08 test.txt
In this case toths can set the file attributes (read only, archive) of
the files from a Windows NT client but a different user (for example
kissk from the same unix group) can not however the mask is 777.

The server works on the same way on Linux too. I checked the manuals but
I could not find anything about this problem.

What was wrong in this case? Any comment would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Sandor Toth

Ps:

[Project#1]
comment = Files of the projects
path = /u12
read only = No
create mask = 0774
directory mask = 0775

I have this problem too with Samba 3.0. I've tried security = domain and
security = server
(using an NT PDC) and still get the 'Error looking up domain groups.' error.
My 2.2.7a Samba server does provide the groups. Anyone have any ideas about
this? Its
clearly not an entirely isolated problem!

[Samba] authentication protocols supported by samba

2003-03-03 Thread Francois Beretti
Hello all

I am preparing a document for my chief, about samba and its
functionnalities, in order to use it as a NT4 PDC and then, maybe, a
member server in a Active Directory environnement, and then to develop
security architectures based on samba

He asked me which are the authentication protocols used by Samba
I am new to Microsoft network technologies, so I am quite confused...
He spoke me about SMB, NTLM, NTLMv2, Kerberos
I know that kerberos is supported by Samba 3
What can be said about the 3 others ?
What are the authentication protocols supported by samba, that can be
used by the windows stations ? (so I speak about the station <---> samba
server part of the communication, not about ldap for example)

Very thanks

NTconfig.POL shold be in the root of the NETLOGON share.

The only tool that can create a usable NTConfig.POL file is the NT Group
Policy Editor. I know that exists under NT4 Server. Not sure how to do
this under Win2K but I will have the answer within a two weeks. Someone is
working on a tool that allows this to be done from Linux/Unix.

Additionally, your MS Windows NT/2K/XP clients must be full domain
members, otherwise the client will not look for the NTConfig.POL file at
all. That is, when you right click on the 'My Computer' icon and select
'Properties, then 'Network ID' it should show that the machine is a member
of your domain, not of a workgroup.

I am a full Domain member, using roaming profiles and the such. I have
placed NTconfig.POL in the netlogon share. Samba never even shows it being
searched for in the logs.

I have the XP version of the policy editor, there is one for NT, 2000 and
XP. This policy has been used in other Samba configurations and works as
expected, this particular samba implementation never uses it for some
reason.

[Samba] Locking Problems with Samba 2.2.7

2003-03-03 Thread markjacobs
I have a new Dell server running Red Hat 8.0 Linux. I just downloaded
and installed Samba 2.2.7 from the Red Hat Web site. I am having trouble
with Microsoft Access 2000 data base locking. The program runs in a
runtime version (.mde)on each client. Only the database(.mdb), the
permissions file(.mdw) and the lock file (.ldb) are resident on the
server running Samba. Each computer can individually access the share
and open and run the database. The program in question is set up for
multiple users. It runs fine on a Windows peer-peer network but won't
allow multiple users from the server. Any suggestions on where to look
to find the problem?

but still i've got problems with groups.

before - from another machine when i've used 'wbinfo -g'i've got response

[Samba] Printing

2003-03-03 Thread Kristyan Osborne
Hi guys,

Our printer server has been up for the past 2 years and we haven't had one problem.

I'm running samba 2.2.7 with lprng.

I wanted to make the printer installation on windoz 2000 boxes easier by putting the
printer drivers on the server and using the [print$] share.

I had it all working nicely and u could just click on a printer on the print sever and
it would install along with the drivers.
However when another user logs on to the same machine they do not see the printer. We
are using profiles here, and my first thought was it could be saving it in my profile.
However if I or another one of my collegues logon (Domain Admins) they can see the
printer but no one else can (normal users).

Any suggestions???

Cheers

Tor,

For what it's worth I finally got the "Add Printer" wizard working with
Samba 2.2.6 at the Unix end and Windows NT as the client. But it was a hell
of a struggle! Don't know if it works with Samba 2.2.5 and/or Windows XP.
BTW I don't see an "add printer command" in your smb.conf extract - don't
you need that?

I am still hoping that someone might have an answer to my problem, as
stated below. Since my last post I have tried the all windows OS
versions bundle driver from HP. It apparently installed, the
printer property panel, sharing, additional drivers showed all
drivers as installed (X86), but on the server actually only
windows2k/Xp was present. In addition any computer which installed
the printer now crashed explorer.exe every time a printing
operation was tried. So I erased the drivers, and uninstalled the
printer in winXP, and tried with "default devmode = yes". Now printing
doesnt cause crashing, but the printer property in windowsXP still shows
all drivers installed, and still the win95/98 drivers are actually not
there. I have included my previous post below, FYI.

[Samba] Moving Files between file systems

2003-03-03 Thread Garcia, Orlando
Esteemed Samba Users,

We have a Samba (2.2.3a) server running on an HP (HP/UX 11i) box and we are
running into a little problem. We currently have a large amount of files
that reside on an NT box that we would like to move to a Samba share (Aprox.
80 GIG worth). The problem seems to be with the mangling of the files. Any
time we try to move a file samba generates a mangled equivalent. If we turn
mangling off it still generates a unique file. In both cases the file are
only 1 kb and can be deleted. However when trying to move this much data you
can see where this can become a problem. There is quite a large number of
directories with very large long names. Will this also be an issue?. Any
guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks

RE: [Samba] samba

2003-03-03 Thread Mitchell, Andy
Not sure I understand your question. Samba won't have anything to do with
logins to the Unix box. How you do authentication for login to a Unix box is
way off topic for this list (perhaps that's not really what you are asking?)

In truth, my comments were based on *very* recent experience (last week)
testing samba in an HP-UX/Solaris and Win2k/WINNT domain setup. (Some big
differences in auth and access). I just learned this stuff myself. I'm good
with Unix sysadmin. I'm an idiot with Windows sysadmin.

Good luck!

Lawrence - No, you did not specify that the machine account had been created
in your email. I believe Den is correct. This error is the result of a
username/password mismatch on the NT PDC you are talking to (PRIMARYDC). So,
you could try a few different things:

1. Smbpasswd -j DYLNET -r PRIMARYDC -U
Supply a that is valid in the domain and supply the password
when prompted

2. create a machine account in the domain and just run the 'smbpasswd -j
DYLNET -r PRIMARYDC' command without a user or password specified.

3. Failing either of those, use tcpdump (on your Linux box) or Ethereal to
watch the traffic between your client and the PDC.

Hope that helps.

Re: [Samba] Re: Re: Hiding a share

2003-03-03 Thread Jon Niehof
Correct. That is why samba has a 'browseable = [ Yes | No]' option.
Go figure.

Which, in turn, leaves the share still visible in Network Neighborhood
etc, as I initially reported.
Go figure. :)
IMX browseable = No in the share section doesn't hide the
share from appearing in Net Neighborhood (didn't test to see
if it hides the *contents* of the share--i.e. if you need to
know full path into the share to access files in it.)
browseable=No in the global section works as expected. This
is with 2.2.7a; YMMV, NRWS, DNEYS, etc.

Re: [Samba] Problem of access samba from rh8

2003-03-03 Thread Steve Blackwell
Hey Patrick,

I have a similar issue that I have reported here before but I never got an
answer.

The only difference I see between what you describe and what I see, is
that I get an error dialog saying:

You do not have sufficient permission to view . This is strange to
me since I appear to log on OK because I can see all the shares but I get
this message when I try to access one of them.

I'm using RH8 with all the latest updates and these samba rpms

samba-common-2.2.7-2
samba-2.2.7-2
samba-client-2.2.7-2
I haven't had time to investigate this further so I would be interested in
anything that you find out.

Steve.

On 2003.03.02 20:45 Patrick Kwan wrote:
Hello,

I already setup a samba server as PDC for windows client to logon and
working fine now with the following config:
- redhat 7.3
- samba 2.2.7a
Then I try to access the samba share from Redhat 8, I can use smbclient
to
access the share without problem but I can't access the share with "KDE's
Konqueror" (smb://NetbiosName/), it can show all shares, when I double
one
of share, it can show the login dialogue box, then I enter the correct
username and password but nothing displayed, it seem to try connecting
the
share.
So, I check the samba.log file, but it show that the user is connected to
the service successfully.
Any body have this issue before?

RE: [Samba] samba

2003-03-03 Thread Mitchell, Andy

Re: [Samba] Thanks Samba Community!!!

2003-03-03 Thread Jon Niehof
So it isnt the rpm packaging per se, but I would bet that it is related.
RH did a lot in 8 and I think it was overly ambitious.
It's pretty much a rule of thumb to *never* use a RedHat .0
release. Believe it or not 8.0 was a lot better in this
respect than many previous ones.

Hopefully 8.1 is out soon since 7.3 (which I've been *very*
impressed with) is EOL'd at the end of this year.

Re: [Samba] Adding printer stops with "Operation could not becompleted"

2003-03-03 Thread Tor Bechmann Sørensen

Matt,
You have mentioned that you "have a High Available File server (NFS and
Samba) configuration with 2 nodes, in an active-active configuration."

I'd appreciate it if you could provide more details about it:
1. which Operating System do you use ?
2. what add-ons need I install to get this high-availability configuration
(installed Virtual Server ???)
3. what configuration changes should I make in samba

Appreciate any kind of help
Thanks

[Samba] Cannot join NT 4.0 Client to Samba3.0a21 PDC

2003-03-03 Thread Chris Kearns
Hello,

I have successfully migrated an existing NT domain of about 30 users and 50 machines
(mainly NT + W2K) to a Samba 2.2.7a PDC. I used the IDEALX Samba-PDC-Howto as a basis,
using SSL and LDAP as the authentication mechanism.

Because of problems with NT groups, I decided to try Samba 3.0, so I downloaded and
built Samba-3.0alpha21, using the RPM Spec below. Using the same smb.conf that worked
with 2.2.7a, I tried adding an NT 4.0 workstation, without success.

The error I get on the NT side is:
"Unable to add or change accounts on the domain. The account information entered does
not grant sufficient privilege to create or change accounts."
when I click on Identification Settings in Network on the NT box. I use the Domain
Administrator account, which works using rpcclient or smbclient.

The log files show a number of access errors, the first being:

Yes, wins is for name resolution. I was also under the impression that
wins allowed a server on a different subnet to show up in
network-neighborhood, by syncing browse lists with the domain master
browser (in this case, an nt wins server and pdc).

By point to point I mean a network where there are two ends, A and B. B
is in its own subnet, no broadcast, it uses A as its gateway/router.
There is nothing else in that subnet. B access the network through A.
The samba server is B. B is a local master, but not a domain master.

The samba server is a domain member, with winbind and security = domain,
and that part is working. The part that isn't working is:

nmbd[19140]: [2003/03/03 06:44:18, 0]
nmbd/nmbd_browsesync.c:domain_master_node_status_fail(262)
nmbd[19140]: domain_master_node_status_fail:
nmbd[19140]: Doing a node status request to the domain master browser
nmbd[19140]: for workgroup [my_domain] at IP [ip addr of nt pdc/wins]
failed.
nmbd[19140]: Cannot sync browser lists.

The domain name and ip address are correct, and an nmap -P0 -sU -p
137-139 (ip_addr) shows:
Port State Service
137/udpopennetbios-ns
138/udpopennetbios-dgm
139/udpopennetbios-ssn

But samba won't sync browse lists.

~ Daniel

Hi,

I am trying to map windows 2000/NT drives onto Unix Box ( SunOS 5.6 sun4u sparc

The purpose to to pool data from VoIP servers to Unix.

My questions are :

1. Is it possible to do it using Samba ?

2. If yes, then what are the softwares I need to install on Unix and Windows ?

3. Where can I get the software ?

4. What are the configuration steps ?

I will be happy to give any more information that you may require.

Thanks & Regards,

Aditya Padhi

What security level are you running?

[bgmilne:/home/users/bgmilne]# cat /etc/sysconfig/msec

If you are running security level 2 or higher, msec will reset
permissions to not be group writeable on directories under /home. So,
you should run draksec to customise this, or not use msec.

[bgmilne:/usr/share/msec]# grep home perm.? |awk '{print $1 "\t" $2
"\t" $3}'
perm.0:/home/ root.root 755
perm.0:/home/* current 755
perm.1:/home/ root.root 755
perm.1:/home/* current 755
perm.2:/home/ root.root 755
perm.2:/home/* current 755
perm.3:/home/ root.root 755
perm.3:/home/* current 711
perm.4:/home/ root.adm751
perm.4:/home/* current 700
perm.5:/home/ root.root 711
perm.5:/home/* current 700

After making your changes in draksec, run:
# msec
to have msec set the permissions as it thinks they should be, or set
them the way you want them, and run
# msec
to see if it leaves them alone now.

P.S. I normally search the digests of this list for "mandrake", I would
not have found your post since I do not search for MDK/mdk/md etc. It is
also a good idea not to abbreviate if you intend other searches (Google
etc) to find your post ...

RE: [Samba] Cannot sync browser lists

2003-03-03 Thread richard
umm you lost me...lets start again.
remember, wins is for name resolution. What do you mean point to point
connection? ie Ras or vpn ? whatever you dial into has to include you in
their browse list or your samba box has to be a local browse master and
sync browse lists with the pdc after a wins lookup. It is a domain
member right? If i've erred I hope someone will correct me.
regards,
Richard Coates.

Samba 3.0 uses unicode when requested by the client, and not explicitly
disabled in the smb.conf.

What problems are you having?

256Mb ram and 2 ide hd 40Gb (raid software)

It works as file/print server and as a domain controller for a lan of about 80 clients.

Every week the server stops working and we have to switch off the server pushing the
power button

Thanks

[Samba] Samba + UNICODE + Netapp

2003-03-03 Thread Frank Bonnet
Hi

Still trying to use a Samba server as a PDC for our
Netapp filers , I'm searching the good configuration
to put in smb.conf to let samba use UNICODE during
authetication process, what do I have to write in
smb.conf file to do so ? ( using 3.0 Alpha 21 )

Thanks a lot

rsync is hosted on samba.org, see rsync.samba.org for details.
