Bello Takes Over In Mummy 3

Maria Bello, who co-stars in the upcoming sequel film The Mummy: Tomb of the
Dragon Emperor, told SCI FI Wire that she plays a kick-ass version of the
character originated by Rachel Weisz.

Bello, who won wide acclaim for 2005's A History of Violence, spoke at the
Toronto International Film Festival and added that she dyed her normally blond
hair auburn for the sequel. "Yeah, it's for a film role. It's for Mummy 3, and
I love it," she said.

Bello, who took time off from filming in Montreal to appear at the film
festival to promote The Jane Austen Book Club, takes over the role of Evelyn
Carnahan from Weisz, who played the character in the first two Mummy movies but
bowed out of the third.

"She has the same name, but she's a very different character than Rachel
played," Bello said in an interview. "She's a bad-ass action chick. I had to
train a lot. I had to do wushu, a martial-art form, some kickboxing,
swordfighting, rifle training for a couple of months before we even started
shooting." Bello added: "It's the role of my dreams. It is just a blast."

Bello will soon join co-stars Brendan Fraser and Jet Li for two months of
shooting in China.

Bello said that after a few weeks of rehearsal, she sustained a black eye after
getting butted by a Winchester rifle, but added that she's fine now. "I'm
looking forward to the doll, too, though," she said cryptically. The Mummy:
Tomb of the Dragon Emperor opens Aug. 1, 2008.

manages to put restrictions and meters on it asking me for more dough. How the

What's just as funny, though, is that Comcast is giving me the "we want to save
you money" speech. Cable companies still foist a lot of stuff on me that I
don't want and didn't ask for (Gold Channel, anyone?). And yet, with all this
fancy tech, I can't pick and choose what channels I want on an a la carte

while we're on it, someone explain to me why cable boxes themselves can't be
standardized and bought off the shelf from electronic stores like phones, for a

crazy. And isn't this the same cable company that's on board in the whole Net

As long as humans don't change, all the tech in the world just gives new ways

***
An Open Letter to Our Customers:

As you may have heard, the Big Ten college athletic conference and its partner
Fox Cable Networks launched a new national TV sports network — the Big Ten
Network (BTN) — on August 30. Comcast wants to make the BTN available to fans
of Big Ten sports, but Fox's BTN has demanded that Comcast and every other
cable and satellite company make it part of their "expanded basic" service in
every home in all Big Ten states, and they want our customers to pay them
hundreds of millions of dollars for the programming. In addition, the Big Ten
is demanding that we carry this new network as part of our digital basic
package nationally.

We'd like you to know that we want to carry the BTN and are working to reach an
agreement with them that would let us add the network to our Sports
Entertainment Package. That way, the BTN would be available for those customers
who want to pay for it on our Sports Entertainment Package, while customers who
don't care to watch Big Ten university sports would not have to be burdened
with an extra charge.

At Comcast, we love sports and have always enthusiastically supported
collegiate and pro sports programming. Comcast will show almost 100 NFL games
this season. In addition, we will air 150 college football games with the best
of the Big Ten schedule through our carriage of ABC, NBC, CBS and ESPN. It is
important to understand that, although the Big Ten has already contracted away
most of its major games to other networks, it is still demanding the second
highest carriage fee for any national network — second only to ESPN.

The Big Ten and Fox see huge revenue opportunities in creating their own
network and want to charge Comcast customers hundreds of millions of dollars to
watch it on expanded basic. We believe that our offer to carry Fox's BTN on a
sports tier best protects the interests of all of our customers, including Big
Ten fans.

As of today, Fox's BTN remains unwilling to allow Comcast and other major cable
companies to carry it as part of our Sports Entertainment Package, which is the
home for comparable programming including the NFL Network.
We ask for your support and patience as we continue to do the right thing for
our customers. If you would like to learn more about the facts on this matter,
please feel free to visit www.puttingfansfirst.com.

Agreed. Remember the days of homemade frozen Kool-Aid pops, cheese
sandwiches, simple toast made in a skillet? Nothing beats that. I don't
think anything can replace the good old-fashioned ways of cooking and making
things. A lot of the packaged food we buy might be convenient, but they're
not better. In fact, as I get older and spend more time looking into
nutrition and fitness, i find myself going back to the old-fashioned things
more. I've always been of the mind to eat food in moderation more than to
cut out any one food. (For example, I'm a "mostly vegetarian", but havent'
yet made the jump to full vegetarian). Butter, red meat, fried food,
sugar--all are bad for you in excess, but any of it can be enjoyed in small
amounts. One hamburger a month isnt going to kill you. And frankly, a little
greasy fried food here and there isn't going to kill you either--in
moderation! I'm more and more starting to think that all the substitutes,
artificial sweeteners, butter substitutes, etc.
, might be worse in the long run, since we think they're safe and eat more
of them than we might the "bad" stuff. For example, remember when margarine
was deemed safer than butter? Now they say between the two, butter's better.
And the studies showing that Nutrasweet and Equal are bad for you won't go
away. There's also a matter of taste. Some substitutes simply don't taste
that good. So, rather than consume two sodas a day full of aritificial
sweeteners, I may have one real soda a week, a Jarrito's sweetened with real
sugar.

It's all about the moderation.

[scifinoir2] My Take - "3:10 to Yuma"

2007-09-11 Thread KeithBJohnson
Summary: Down-on-his-luck Rancher Dan Evans undertakes a dangerous mission,
joining a group of men taking outlaw Ben Wade to prison. They must survive
Indians, others out to get Wade, and Wade's own gang in order to get him on the
3:10 train to Yuma.

My Quick Take: This is a fun, exciting movie in the tradition of old Westerns.
There are bad guys, good (or not-so-bad) guys, and lots of action. Plenty of
chases and gunfights, even a few explosions. Russell Crowe as always is a
captivating presence, dominating the screen and the scene. Christian
Bale--almost a chameleon of an actor--gets into his role as the desperate
rancher. Good supporting cast, great cinematography and camera work,
pulse-pounding music. Did I mention the gunfights? And the horse chases?
Really enjoyed this pic.

My Full Take: At its core, the Western is a morality tale, the story of a
basically good man struggling against sinister forces while remaining true to
what’s right. What those forces are—evil land barons, gunfighters, Mother
Nature—is less important than the struggle the hero undertakes to overcome
them. When others abandon him—even when he doubts himself—the hero stands
alone, fighting to the end.

Rancher Dan Evans (Christian Bale) is such a man. Dan can barely hold his
family together, battling drought, his younger son’s tuberculosis, a land owner
to whom he’s heavily in debt, and his own physical limitations (having lost
part of a leg in the Civil War). Dan can’t even muster the energy to rebuke his
oldest son’s increasingly critical and disrespectful remarks, because they echo
his own self-doubts. Dan feels his wife slowly slipping away from him, which
only feeds his own growing desperation. Things get worse when the land owner’s
men burn down his barn and drive his cattle away as a warning to pay up or get
out.

As Dan and his boys later go to fetch the herd, they see in the distance a
heist in progress. The infamous Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) and his gang are
attacking a stagecoach. A real menace, Wade has committed over twenty heists,
costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and the lives of dozens of men. In
short order, Wade’s gang has killed everyone and stolen the money. The sequence
is thrilling, full of hyperkinetic energy as pursuers and the pursued engage in
a desperate chase, horses galloping like mad, grizzled, hard-looking men
cursing and yelling as they release a barrage of bullets. The whole scene is
shot with frenetic close ups and gorgeous long pans, and driven by a musical
score that heightens the action. Who needs a car chase?

Later, when Wade is captured, Dan agrees to accompany the party taking Wade to
catch the 3:10 train to Yuma prison—a desperate move motivated by the money
he’ll receive for the job. The journey is rife with danger: Indians, other men
hungry for vengeance on Wade, Wade’s own pursuing gang, and worst of all, Wade
himself.

Crowe’s Ben Wade is the kind of smooth villain who does pencil drawings during
a holdup, uses his wits as much as his gun, reads the Bible, and treats women
with charm and respect. He doesn’t kill for sport: Wade spares Dan after the
holdup even though his men want to kill him (a decision he later comes to
regret). But this is not a bad guy with a good heart. He remains a cold-blooded
killer, or as he says, “I’m rotten to the core”.

It’s Wade’s dual nature that Dan must battle, as he fights to remember why he’s
risking all to turn in someone who’s actually done him no personal harm. “Why
don’t you take the money and go home to your pretty wife?” Wade asks Dan. “What
are you trying to prove?”

It’s a good question, especially seeing that some of Dan’s partners are almost
as bad as Wade himself. But Dan is driven by his need for money and security.
And, increasingly, the need to save the soul of his oldest son William, who
starts to admire Wade as a kind of hero, strong where his father is weak.
Crazed by his need to do something “good for once”, Dan pushes on past the
point of reason.

“3:10 to Yuma” gets the Western mythos right. It’s full of larger-than-life
characters. Dangers lurk behind every rock and bush. There are plenty of
chases, fights, gun battles, explosions—enough for even modern tastes. The
actors are good across the board. Russell Crowe is great as Wade, at times
charming, at times chilling, always commanding. Christian Bale inhabits the
role of the thin, bedraggled Dan Evans, a hero not by nature, but by need. The
supporting cast is likewise good, especially Peter Fonda in a memorable but
too-brief stint as an obsessive bounty hunter. The picture looks great too,
from the towns to the gorgeous scenery to the characters themselves. Even the
musical score fits. The movie works on all counts. It’s s a fun, exciting ride.

Now, this being a traditional pic, it must be said that women and people of
color get short shrift. The only Indians seen try to kill Dan and his party

[scifinoir2] Title of new 'Indiana Jones' revealed

Title of new 'Indiana Jones' revealed

NEW YORK (AP) - The title of the new "Indiana Jones" movie, directed by
Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford, has been revealed.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" will be in theaters
May 22, 2008.

The title of the long-awaited fourth installment of the adventure series
was announced by Shia LaBeouf, who co-stars with Ford in the film, at the
MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday.

The new Indy adventure, which is set in the 1950s, also stars Cate
Blanchett, Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Jim Broadbent and Karen Allen.

Sean Connery, who played dad to Ford's globe-trotting archaeologist in
1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," will not reprise the role in
the new movie.

The series began in 1981 with "Raiders of the Lost Ark," followed by
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" in 1984.

In promotional photos, the 65-year-old Ford appears fit as ever.

"I have to say, he looks amazing," Kathleen Kennedy, the film's
co-executive producer, along with George Lucas, told The Associated Press
in July. "He looks fantastic in the outfit."

He Only runs a branch of Torchwood, not the entire Institute. But I do
not think you should think of Capt. Jack Harkness as an "American" as we
know Americans any more than Dr. Who, the Time Lord, as a Brit. Because
of his background and expertise, he is likely considered enough of an
asset to lead a branch of Torchwood. He is a former member of the Time
Agents, humans who travel through time to maintain history. He was born
in America in the 51st century and left the Agency after they stole two
years of his memories and became a con man, using a stolen Chula

Some substitutes simply don't taste
that good. So, rather than consume two sodas a day full of aritificial

sugar.

It's all about the moderation.

In 6+ years, what I see is W doesn't hire deep thinkers or the
brightest folks. W hires party-loyalists who are either connected or
have given money to said campaign... folks who "drank and continue to
drink the cool-ade." People who follow the party ideology blindly
until they get impaled on a fence while wondering, 'where did that
fence come from?' Only then do they change course, and only then
reluctantly while blaming the Dems, Clinton, and everyone else.

I'm reserving judgment. When I heard they were doing Battlestar, I
scoffed. and in my opinion it turned out fantastic, So, to me, how it
will turn out depends on who is put in charge and the directing and
writing team assembled. Put the people behind Heroes, Lost, Traveler,
Farscape or 4400, Battlestar, even Smallville on it and it could turn
out really good.

good and eat a mouse. It can be a mini-series for all I care, just please
give the empty calories and give some up and coming actors some work. It¹s
V. It won¹t be a Harlan Ellison script. Hell, not even a Warren Ellis
script. It¹s gonna be ³A leader who is charismatic and powerful lies to the
masses about his/her intent to take over a small country in the middle

wants anyway.² We¹ve not only SEEN this when it was done originally, we
watched Karl Rove remix it in real life.

All I ask is that they not make Diana blonde, and they can count on me for
at least three episodes.

Sleep Apnea is when you stop breathing when you sleep because your throat
 muscles
relax. Then your brain wakes you up just enough to get you breathing again.
 This cycle
continues all night. You can die.

CPAP = Continuous Positive Air Pressure. You spend a night in a hospital
 sleep center
where they measure the pressure needed to keep your throat open.

Then you're fitted with a machine that gently blows air through your nose
 (nose and mouth in
some cases) and down your throat.

Here is the one I use now. I've been using a CPAP since '98. It saved my
 life.

 ge-swift.html?menu=products

The nasal headgear is very comfortable, especially compared to the Aircraft
pilot looking mask I started out with.

You would be surprised at how many people have sleep apnea. And a lot of it
has to do with being overweight.
I used to wear a 19 inch shirt. I lost almost an inch off my neck, and the
pressure needed to keep me breathing
 was just reduced.
