Subject: CS>[List Owner] Reminder for new members and lurkers...

Hi everybody,

For all of you who enjoy holidays of various sorts at this time of
year, I wish you good ones.

For any new members or lurkers wondering, "Where's all the information
about colloidal silver I was told would be here?" ...

Let me explain that most of the regulars here already have had their
questions answered long ago, and thus don't *need* to talk about CS
amongst themselves very much. So, unless you let us know what kind of
information you're looking for, the conversation will continue to bob
and weave among whatever health-related topics people have on their
minds. I don't mind this so long as it doesn't swamp people's efforts
to get information when they *do* ask for it.

So, please let us know you're there and what kind of questions you need
answered right now, so we can help... And, welcome aboard.

Address your questions to silver-list@eskimo.com ...

I'm always available for questions or help related to list operations
at my usual e-mail address, mdev...@eskimo.com ...

For all of you, thank you for keeping things on an even keel. It is
very reassuring to watch you take care of yourselves and keep the place
running smoothly.

Peace,

It's on the list, Marshall, absolutely!

The first order of business is converting all messages to plain text,
however, which will vastly reduce the frequency of oversize messages to
begin with. Doing the size-bounce with an explanatory auto-reply will
vastly help with the remaining few incidents.

Several folks -- Lisa, Del, Tel to name the most recent -- have managed
to send messages to the list that barely break the 18k message size
limit, and so didn't post. As things are configured right now, you
won't get any notice of that unless I respond to you myself, which I'm
not always energetic enough to do.

If you don't see your message post within an hour or so, try trimming
it down and sending again. Unless there is a problem with the mail
server at eskimo, that's usually the only reason a message doesn't go
through right away, automatically.

Always delete most of the quoted text from your reply... it's usually
tacked on after your message and scrolls off the bottom of your editing
window, unseen. If you do that, you'll easily be able to send a couple
of pages of new text without breaking the limit, even if your mailer is
set to send fancy formatted text.

If you need to send more, then send only plain-text. It's an option in
almost every available program and webmail system, often right in the
message composer window. That will permit you to send several more
screens' worth of text, if you're forwarding information from another
source, for instance, or making lengthy detailed comments.

Thank you!

That brings me to the other item... I am continuing to work on
extensive changes to the configuration of the existing list software
which will greatly reduce the importance of the message size limit,
eliminate message format problems, improve security, and eliminate or
automate much of my remaining admin workload.

I've set up a trap that lets me send test messages through the Off
Topic List without them actually posting. So it should be less annoying
to OT List subscribers than it's been for the last couple of weeks,
even as I continue to use it for my testbed. Rest assured I'm still
working on it, even though the test messages have stopped.

When I'm ready I'll ask y'all to help me stress test the new code on
the OT List, before I copy things over to this list's setup and deploy
the changes here.

Again, thanks for your patience and continued cooperation.

CS>[List Owner] Reminder...

2009-09-15 Thread M. G. Devour
May I remind everyone that discussion of the *political* aspects of the
Swine Flu scare and various vaccine-related developments is not a good
fit with this group's mission? The occasional heads-up message with
discussion taken to the OT list is okay.

If anyone is either attacking or defending the current administration
in a post, it's likely off topic. Okay? All this is stuff that's been
brewing for decades across multiple administrations, complete with
false alarms and distractions enough on both sides to discredit the
truth if or when something finally does happen.

Finally, please take great care before posting corrections of another
member or perceiving offense or insult in their words to you.
Everything we say in this medium is grossly amplified and harshened in
tone. You must write with careful attention to the feelings of others,
and read with the skin of a water buffalo. It takes practice.

Let me know in private e-mail if anything is getting out of hand.
Thanks to those of you who realized what was going on and pulled back
from the brink. I depend on you, each of you, to keep the group on
track by regulating yourselves.

Thank you, all.

CS>[List Owner]Reminder...

2009-09-06 Thread M. G. Devour
I need to remind some folks that political discussions are not
permitted here on the main silver list. The OT list is available for
*civil* conversation on such topics. See the silver list web site for
instructions on joining the OT list. (Links below...)

The alleged "Health Care Reform" debate completely ignores what most of
us realize is wrong and corrupt in mainstream medicine. There isn't any
point I can see in bringing to our group the superficial but
acrimonious debate over who pays and who controls a basic system that
does everything possible to exclude healthy, economical alternatives
from development and use.

Thank you.

Pathogens in food are usually bacterial, which generally can survive in a

Hi Mike.  I have been interested in the *aspirin theory* in all of the Swine
Flu information I've read, and brought that theory to my husband's attention
this morning.  He said something to the effect that he couldn't see how a
temperature of 102 or 103 in the human body could kill a virus, when it
requires temps of 140 and up to kill pathogens in the food we eat.  Wonder if
someone here would have a good answer for him?

Also, I loved your analogy to the "rabbit hole" you went down ten to fifteen
years ago.  I guess we've all gone down that rabbit hole, else we wouldn't be
here on this list.  Methinks said rabbit hole has many different tunnels, and
it's easy (and sometimes confusing) exactly which tunnels are valid and which
are metaphoric dead-ends.  But one thing's for sure -- once down the rabbit
hole, there's no going up it, is there?  lol

There are those interesting theories that aspirin, of all things, might
have been responsible for many of the deaths in 1918. Folks killed
their fevers, which would normally have slowed down the virus, which
then proliferated and killed them.

I bet you meant "formally" trained! I spent 18 years as a
research technician in the physical sciences. I can relate.

Most of what passes for "information" on the 'net is unsupported
speculation. A lot of it attempts to masquerade as "scientific" but
doesn't come even close for anybody with a little training. Yet a lot
of people are not knowledgable enough and will be scared by it.

Yep, and that gets right to crux of *my* decision process. Legitimate?
It all boils down to, where should I draw that line?

It gets tough to figure out what to do when you're not sure what's
really happening. That leads to the endless back and forth over
conspiracies and evil plots, versus stupiditiy and corruption, versus
don't worry, be happy, everything's gonna be okay.

Some of that is going to bleed into the discussion, no matter what we
do. It's just a matter of keeping it small, overall.

> I realize the irony of my having pointed attention to it instead of

If it had done the latter, it'd have been a case of my neglect. What I
want is for folks to not respond to the OT and marginal stuff, and give
me a heads-up when you think things are getting too far astray.

> Fine for somebody's sci-fi shelf, but for a what I had considered an
> experimental science list?

Read any of David Weber's stuff? Good sci-fi...

Basically, my policy of prohibiting politics, except as it relates to
colloidal silver and important alternative health issues, is my best
effort to avoid having to arbitrarily decree what is and is not
"legitimate" within the broad spectrum of beliefs that exist in our
members.

On occasion I'll ask somebody to tone it down a bit in deference to not
scaring off newcomers, but it's mainly a matter of keeping the volume
low enough overall that the more conventional tends to balance the
farther out, and folks can choose what to listen to.

I do that by trying to keep up with the discussion, which can be a
challenge sometimes, and by watching my in-box for personal contacts
from people with complaints or comments about what's going on. That's
where you guys and gals can support my efforts.

I went over that edge a long time ago, I'm afraid. It started
with lies I learned I was being told by the mainstream media about
specific issues I'd never looked at closely before. It progressed to
recognizing the disfunctionality of much of our "system." Somewhere
along the way, I found out there was a whole other world of opinions
and beliefs that, while labelled "fringe" by agencies of the
aforementioned mainstream system, exhibited every sign of being
dangerously real, just like colloidal silver has turned out to be.

(Dangerous, as in a hazard to my complacency...)

So I guess you can say I'm more prepared to "suspend disbelief" about
things I'd never have taken seriously before I went down the rabbit
hole 10 or 15 years ago. I know there are fewer things I'm willing to
say are impossible now than I would have in the beginning.

> I'm happy you at least saw that I was trying to resolve it.

Oh, yes. I am much happier when folks make the conscious decision to de-
escalate and make things better. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I think you took care of that just fine!

Regarding the swine flu issue: there are a few fine, thoughtful
articles about the probable links to factory farming, which encourages
extremely rapid viral mutation.Factory farming (or ranching I
suppose) is a more plausible explanation for strange bird/pig viruses
than weapons lab work, though the latter is hardly implausible. The
facts as I read them don't provide any evidence of that, however.

For a good read, see Wm. Engdahl's recent article, and also the
excellent Johann Hari. I think both articles may be at
informationclearinghouse.info.If not a Google search should turn
both up quickly; they are very recent. Both mention the world's
largest pig ranch, American owned, in Mexico, where the "flu" first
emerged.

Hari may well be right that our craving for cheap meat will lead to a
devastating pandemic, and proper regulation is essential. The growth
of these huge factories is quite recent, within the past 20 years, and
can be done away with if only legislators would not sell out, as most
do.

useful information usually results. I've been criticized for this by
some people, but I think it contributes a great deal to the group's
sense of community.

This is an important topic, and whether or not it is true will be seen
in the next few months, there is no reason to ever be rude.

Indeed, there is never reason to be rude.

Rense is generally thought of as a fairly speculative information
source -- some would characterize him as fringe -- but I would not have
jumped on Paula for posting this and other such links OCCASIONALLY, as
long as everybody understands that any discussion of the controversial
aspects of them are carried out on the OT list.

The difference between Paula's message and, for instance, Aaron's
comments that I remarked on just yesterday, was that Paula was only
giving a brief description of the content, and not a lengthy discourse
or speculation.

Part of the diversity that I expect everyone to tolerate is that some
folks here believe things that you find a bit of a stretch... sorta
like how your snotty brother-in-law (or pick your other favorite
annoying person) thinks about *YOU* and that stupid colloidal silver
stuff that you're always prattling on about...

We know that not everything we're reading, mainstream or alternative,
is true or paints a complete picture. We're all adults capable of
discernment. I'm willing to allow a bit of... variety, so long as
discussion of politics and other controversy stays strictly limited on
the main list.

I would appreciate if you all refrain from publicly correcting each
other's behavior (playing list cop). I'm the one that should do that. I
will either make public posts like this one, or I'll talk quietly to
the individuals involved off-list. If I'm doing the latter you won't
know it, and your efforts to police things will only cause hard
feelings and disruption.

In the future, please contact me directly if you see anything you think
should not be going on.

Thanks for your efforts to resolve the disagreement.

Be well!

Yes, I allow, even encourage, other health-related questions to be
asked and answers given, so long as anything not CS-related gets
covered more briefly. Magnets are okay, so long as they don't stick
around too long.

CS>[List Owner] Reminder to anyone new and lurking...

2008-08-26 Thread M. G. Devour
Hi all,

Since there are a lot more posts about e-mail issues today than 'most
anything else, just a reminder:

If you're looking for information on colloidal silver, don't wait for
somebody else to bring up your questions, please ask away! Answers are
ready and waiting in the minds of our expert members (and the rest of
us!).

Langsley, thanks for explanating exactly why Barb's not seeing her own
posts. It's a wonderful feeling when computer questions actually get
matched up with *answers* instead of staying mysteries!

CS>[List Owner] Reminder and administrative note...

2008-01-26 Thread M. G. Devour
Hi folks,

Lucky you, you get to hear from me two days in a row!

First off a reminder to close down the UFO discussions. They've been
picked up again at the OT list where they belonged in the first place.

Also stop any further kibitzing about which lurker is king of the hill
or whatever nonsese is going on there.

Meanwhile, an administrative note:

For some reason a message from this 'samuel' person was re-sent by the
digest server to all the digest subscribers individually... I'm still
studying why this happened, apart from some irreproduceable random
glitch. That's why a bunch of folks who are receiving and archiving the
digests unopened saw an unexpected message in their in-boxes. Their
replies were directed to the main list by the reply-to header,
apparently.

In any case, this samuel is a fairly recent subscriber with a handful
of posts to her credit. (In one message she mentioned being a
female...) There's no question you have to have a little patience to
mine this community for the information you need. The lack of archives
hurts us, as does our occasional OT excursions.

So, acknowledging the criticisms, including Sam's "It use to be a
pretty good colloidal silver list," it should drive home the virtue of
keeping the topic spread reasonably disciplined. However, I stand by my
decision to welcome a diverse range of alternative health related
topics in answer to specific questions or requests of our members.

It is each member's responsibility to ASK for information. This is a
conversation not a lecture. Join in and you will receive the help you
need if anyone here is able to. We are willing.

Thank you,

Thank you for your comment, John.

To you I say, thank you for being patient with the situation. You know
I tend to move very slowly on disciplinary matters when they are not
really acute. I depend on people to govern their own behavior. For that
to happen they need feedback, some private and some on-list. It takes
time.

In this case, I'm seeing new people's behavior being influenced in a
negative way by long-time users who should know better -- something I
want to stop.

To the rest of you I commend John's remarks as important to remember.
It *is* a matter of respect.

If you find John's attitude to be too restrictive, please note that
your preferences *are* respected in that I will almost certainly never
tighten the controls here so much that he would be completely
satisfied.

So, I call upon *you* to respect his needs, and others', by helping us
travel the middle ground on which few are totally comfortable but
nearly all can make progress... together.

End of sermon...

Hi Mike,
I for one am sick and tired of these people who have NO RESPECT for the rest
of the people on the forum. There are rules, and there are rules.

Just block these people who won't respect the rest of us and get rid of
them. Let them go and mess up someone or something else.

Subject: CS>[List Owner] Reminder

I've just sent a couple of private, and pointed, reminders to list
members who have stretched out the Cayce topic and, of all things, have
now introduced a discussion of reincarnation!

NO, NO, NO! Good grief!

If it isn't obvious that such conversations do not belong here, I don't
know what is. The potential of such remarks to offend people of other
beliefs, and to try the patience of those whose time and energy is
limited, should be so plain I would expect that simple courtesy would
prevent you from posting them to the main list.

The rule is plain and fully covers this:

"Avoid discussing religion, mysticism, or spirituality. There is no
comment you can make that will not risk offending someone. Overt
evangelization is not permitted. Do not reply to religious remarks made
by others."

Hear that? "DO NOT REPLY" to the remarks others are making, in error,
on a prohibited topic in a thread that I've already asked to be closed!

Go to http://www.silverlist.org and click on List Rules and Discipline
Policy > Prohibited Topics.

A nice thread on the subject has been begun by Marshall on the Off
Topic list. For the time being, the web archives are down, so you'll
have to subscribe to receive the OT list in e-mail. Follow instructions
at the Silver List web site, on the page for the Off Topic List.

CS>[List Owner] Reminder...

2003-11-14 Thread M. G. Devour
Hi folks,

Seeing as how we're averaging something like 50 messages per day right
now, I'd like to remind everyone that we have a good place to take the
discussions of stuff *unrelated* to Colloidal Silver.

The place for these discussions is the Silver Off Topic List. Everybody
from the silver list is already approved to post to the Off Topic List.
You can read the OT list on the web at...

   http://escribe.com/health/silverofftopiclist/index.html

Or you can get it as e-mail by following the subscription instructions
at the following URL:

   http://www.silverlist.org/OffTopic.html

You may post to the Off Topic List by addressing your messages to:

   silver-off-topic-l...@eskimo.com

The OT list has been pretty quiet lately while the main list roared
along. Feel free to continue the lively discussion of Lo Carb diets,
Diabetes, and Deodorant stones there!

Please don't interpret this as dropping the hammer on everything. I
know that it'll take another day or two for any of those threads to
finish up or move, and I don't mind at all that we've had these
discussions.

My policy is that any reasonable health-related question is welcome,
and *any* appropriate answers may be given, whether they relate to
Colloidal Silver or not.

I then ask that non-CS-related threads be wound down or migrated off
the list as soon as basic information is given and useful resources
pointed out. Further detailed discussion or lengthy debate ought to
move to the OT list or other forums.

Migrating a thread is as simple as adding ...

 silver-off-topic-l...@eskimo.com

... to either the Addressee: or Copy To: field of your message and
mentioning in the body of the mention that you'll be seeking replies on
the OT list.

As always, all this information can be found at the Silver List web
site, at:

   http://www.silverlist.org

That web address is in the footer at the bottom of every list message,
along with my e-mail address if you need to talk to me.

Thanks for a great week of discussion, folks! A lot of good silver
related topics have been covered, and many people have been getting
good help. That is what our list is for.

Be well,

Mike Devour
silver-list owner
