She was underwhelmed
If that's a word
I know it's not
'Cause I looked it up
That's one of those skills
That I learned in my school

I was overwhelmed
And I'm sure of that one
'Cause I learned it
Back in grade school
When I was young

She said, "You is funny"
I said, "You are funny"
She said, "Thank you"
And I said, "Never mind"
And she rolled her eyes
Her beautiful eyes

The point is not the grammar
It's the feeling
That is certainly in my heart
But not in hers

We were talkin' about people
That eat meat
I felt like an ass
'Cause I was one
She said, "It's okay"
But I felt like
I just ate my young

She's obviously
A person with a cause
I told her that
I don't smoke or drink
She told me to loosen up
On her way to the L.C.

She skips her classes
And gets good grades
I go to my courses
Rain or shine
She's passing her classes
While I attend mine

She wrote out a story
About her life
I think it included
Something about me
I'm not sure of that
But I'm sure of one thing
Her spelling's atrocious

She told me to read
Between the lines
And tell her exactly
What I got out of it
I told her affection had two F's
Especially when
You're dealing with me

I usually notice
All the little things
One time I was proud of it
She says it's annoying
She cursed me up and down
And rolled her R's
(Her beautiful R's)

She says I'm caught up
In triviality
All I really wanna know
Is what she thinks of me
I think my love for her
Makes me miss the point
I miss the point
Hey mister

Look through the music
There's a dancing girl
She can be broken
In your hands
She knows you're looking at her
But that's what scares her
You're in the space
That she commands

If she still likes you
You might get a call
She'll ask you why
You stood and stared
You will be hearing from her
But that should scare you
If she still likes you
Be prepared

Pardon me for calling
But I'm just checking in
You don't know who I am
But I know where you've been
You sit and tap your fingers
When you should tap your phone
Tap all your resources
Until she leaves you alone
She leaves you alone

The girl's got nothing on you
But that's what bugs you
'Cause you still let her get to you

I AM THE CANCER from _SMEARED_ LP
---

So long, Matthew
I will miss you
There is too much to do
Or I'd go with you
It's a bad time
I haven't got a dime

So long, Allison
I now know where you've been
But I don't know where you're goin'
There's security in knowing
But I know some morning
Without any warning
You'll be gone

Oh you've kissed me, kissed me
Now you're supposed to miss me

So long, Andrew
I will miss you
I just wrote you a long note
You'd better answer
I am the cancer
Removed from you

Oh you've missed me, missed me
Now you've got to kiss me
Kiss me goodbye

So long, scarecrow
At least with you I know
You're going nowhere
What do you care
There's nothing up your sleeve
So you can never leave
Why would you?

Stay there, scarecrow
Sorry I had to go
But I shall return
It was my turn to get away
Someone had to stay
So I can go

I miss you most of all
You've kissed me, kissed me
I can't wait until you kiss me
Until you kiss me
I can't wait until you kiss me
Kiss me again

MEDIAN STRIP from _SMEARED_ LP

I can't tell you what I want to
I can't tell you
I can smell you a mile away
Measured arms you've flexed before
Next to a battleship
You made me mad, I made you sad
But now I'm glad you're gone
Take me on, take me on

Count to ten, I'll be there
Tone it down, I'll be in the barrel
Point came for you to be
Gettin' close to me
Can't you see I can't be
P-P-I-M-I-S-S
I assess the situation differently

You should hit the median strip
You should hit the median strip

Take me on, take me on

Three day bender set you straight
Two flights were both on time
To fight was on your mind
Tonight I don't feel fine
Feel free to dwell on what you feel
Free to say I don't feel free
You made me mad and now I've had
To say that I was wrong

You should hit the median strip
You should hit the median strip

Take me on, take me on

I had to leave out one band -- Jellyfishbabies -- in order to fit all
the rest on the computer screen. Chris has them located right next door
to "Registered Vote" but not connected to anyone else. His note reads:

"Chris Murphy's my name and I'm taking credit or blame for this Halifax
music scene family tree. The tree itself was actually more twisted than
this so I ended up eliminating some lines as it was getting too messy and
hard to follow. I didn't put every band I could think of either because I
couldn't connect them to anyone else or I didn't like the band. But the
lines I did draw I think are true. I was relying on others near the top
in the 'before my time' section. Sue me if I'm wrong."

He also writes a list of "Honourable Mentions": Null Set, Redd Leader,
The Nerve, Next X, The Quirk, Cooter Family, Roland Blinn, Basic English,
Phycus, Aimless, Donner Party Reunion, Merge, Tetris

That's 68 bands on Chris Murphy's chart and I can
claim to have seen 17 of them live (=25%). There
must be some longtime scenesters on this list who
have seen many more than that. Anyone?

}i think its interesting that one of the biggest bands of the last year
}..weezer stle the logo of one of the biggest bands of well last year
}too.. van halen...

I thought they stole it from Waylon Jennings who stole it from Van Halen.

Don't they get shit on for copyright reasons? I mean, if you stuffed your
band's logo into the shape of a Coke bottle you'd never get on a major
label because Coke would sue the pants off you the moment the record hit
gold.

TH's John Boomer-Star Wars logo and the Smart Bomb Atari cartridge were
both funny and made sense because the logo tied in with the title and
were nods to the early-80's pop culture that seems to have been quite an
influence on them. Nobody was expecting big sales so no worry of George
Lucas knocking on the door at Ravenrock Lane. Compare that to Merge's
knockoff Irving Oil logo which must have been a nod to the coolness of
wearing gas jockey shirts, and was kinda risky considering it's a local
company.

But I'm still talking about locals here, can a major seller get away
with it nationally? More examples?

Next thing James, Jim and Tara will design a Monkees-inspired logo for
their label! (I'm hoping there isn't one)

Andrew

ps. Hey Jon, why hasn't anyone asked you about the t-shirts since you got
back on? :)
I know you got the shirts so we'll see them by Xmas, I'm not asking!

If you didn't keep them write me and I'll send you a copy.

On that note, I heard a snippet of Laying Blame on CKDU this afternoon,
except it was the Roger Daltrey version:

"J-just as l-long as I-I h-have y-you"

The DJ promptly shut off the stuttering cd and played a Frank Black song.

At least it shows that this dead band gets enough airplay to wear the disc
out.

band broken up there is more to talk about? It seems that folks are more
willing to talk about other bands now that there's little REAL news about

"Uncle Owen" (Left of Center) rhymes just about everywhere, though some
of the rhymes are weak.

One example of free Sloan verse is Penpals, as was pointed out, but it
hardly even makes sense, let alone rhyming. Part of its charm.

But the obvious omission here, *the* Sloan song. There are a few scattered
rhymes in "Underwhelmed", but for the most part it's all meter and wit in
three line bits (since, being a scientist, I don't know the word for what
comes between a couplet and a quatrain).

Wow, I caught a few snippets of Munch Yeast last night during the ads of
the Beatles Anthology. A special on some rock fest/ compilation in PEI
"Eat This". Lots of neat AiC wannabe bands. Caught a monoxides vid at
the end (I've got an Idea), loved the scenes of crazed fans chasing them
around (or was that the Beatles, hmmm...). And then some fool requested
Tom Waits! Geez, so much for CanCon.
Anyhow, that should pacify the neglected islanders for a bit. Next
week Mike said they'd be in Antigonish (hopefully not some Sass
Jordan cover band at T- Bone's) and St. John('s?). So much for
Halicentricism. I guess John really gave him a dressing down last week!

MORNING LINE FOCUS REPORT: It's Small Business Week In Canada. For a
variety of reasons -- including obviously necessity -- more and more young
people are creating their own businesses. Tonight, for example, marks the
launch of Halifax's newest magazine, an online collaboration of
twentysomething journalists and designers. We check them out . . . and we
offer some mini-profiles of other young people who created their own jobs.
***
WHO'S A SLACKER?
by Katie Bowden
RECORD OF SUCCESS: Colin MacKenzie is a key player in Halifax's thriving
music scene. A partner in MURDERECORDS and Cinnamon Toast Records,
MacKenzie says he's "spreading the gospel of the Halifax indie music
scene."

After a stint as music director at CKDU radio, he and two friends
co-founded Cinnamon Toast Records. Shortly afterwards, MacKenzie was asked
to manage the Halifax band, Jale.

Meanwhile, another Halifax band, Sloan, needed help. In 1992, they started
their own record company, Murderecords. After a year of operation, band
members found that they couldn't manage a touring schedule as well as the
business, and turned to MacKenzie for help.

Two years later, MacKenzie, now 31, is juggling the position of Managing
Director with Sloan's company, and partnerships in both his own Cinnamon
Toast Records and Murderecords. He says he's loving it.

Since the music industry is dominated by young people, MacKenzie says he
hasn't encountered many difficulties due to his age. He admits that in the
beginning, they got a lot of help from more experienced people in the music
industry. "When we first started we were a little naive, and I felt that we
were being babysat by a few people at MCA, which was really nice of them,"
he says.

Having a small record company means the artists have more input on how
they're managed, MacKenzie says. "We're more artist-friendly than the big
companies," he says. "We aren't in this to make as much money off the
artists in the short run as we can -- it's more of a long term investment
we're developing."

which used to number 20-50 reasonably informative posts a month, have
jumped to 120-190 since March. So there's gotta be something going on out
there.

Or has the list died with the band?

Or is it just a cold, gloomy friday in Hell?

Yeah, we went out to "The Island" and passed the gun around in
celebration of Adam "Fan From Hell" Rodenzinger hitting the big 2-0! He's
now no longer a slacker teen, but a slacker adult. And he got a big kick
on the drive to Chester out of the Absolutely Nothing tape I bought him.
(Alabama?!?)
So he's no longer "just nineteen" (but he is "just not dead"??)

Hey, it happened. It was one of the few things about the show that woke
me up (great show, I was just tired, sunburnt, and in the early stages of
a seasonal head cold). That and the sweaty Chinstraps drummer who kept
ducking under the railing to run back and forth to the dancefloor. He
kept rubbing past my leg like a wet sheepdog. Yecch! Ever fall asleep
and wake up because the dog's licking you??

PS Kat was an excellent shot for a .22 virgin. Perhaps it was the target
that made her aim so deadly.

PPS the sight was off such that we tended to shoot high and left of centre.
No joke!

PPPS I'm looking forward to seeing Potmaster and "Cat Racket" open for
Mystery Machine. Hope Birdland fixes their ads before Kat Rocket show up
for the gig :)

}Listen, I know Americans' knowledge of Canadian geography can
}be pathetic at times, but I lived in Halifax for quite a long
}time, and it is, in the greater scheme of things, "up near
}Quebec". In fact, there is only one small province (New
}Brunswick, for anyone who doesn't know) separating it from
}Quebec.

Clarification: The person who said this was a 40ish pharmaceutical
researcher from Boston, Massachussetts. By my compass the bearings Boston-
Quebec and Boston-Halifax differ by about 45 degrees. He was Chinese and
thus not a product of the US educational system, but he had lived in
Boston for about ten years. And considering the strength of the
social/tourist link between Boston and Halifax (and that nice Christmas
tree we send them every year) I figured he'd know better.

Another acquaintance of mine in Boston once E-mailed me to say he was
coming to Ottawa and said he'd try to look me up. I had to point out
to him that Boston was closer to Halifax than Ottawa was. He was a recent
immigrant from Russia, so I excused him.

PS my fave non-Haligonian Sloan reference was the Sloan character on

Another list for that still non-existent FAQ??

FOR SALE: 4M of Archives

1995-05-31 Thread Andrew . Rodenhiser
OK, I posted this offer a while back and got minimal response. I have
archived nearly a thousand "interesting, informative" SloanNet Messages
dating back to the infancy of the 'net (like, two weeks old, when I
joined) but I really could use the 3-4M of space (compressed, even!) which
they occupy on my 120M hard drive here at work. I'm hoping that someone
out there can either point me to an archive site where they can be
uploaded (perhaps in monthly format) or take them off my hands. I'd
really hate to delete this stuff and the die-hard fans out there who
didn't join so early on might like to read it (as would whoever takes on
the task of FAQing this list).

It's all here, folks:

lyrics
newspaper articles
trivia
interviews
music reviews
gig reviews
record store reviews
the joys of vinyl
discussions of earplug acoustics
and the occasional flamewar

Somebody please help me preserve this wealth of info.

Well, I'm afraid I'm not even unix-literate, so this is above my head.
What I have is 2-3M compressed (so maybe 3-4 uncompressed) of stored mail
messages. I thought the easiest thing to do would be to compile them
monthly into ~20 files, and/or I can separate out good stuff like
discographies, lyrics, maybe even a file of news clippings and radio
interviews, reviews of gigs and albums, etc. I can even divvy a lot of it
up by band if it doesn't have to do with Sloan. It would only take me a
couple of hours to move all the good stuff into new folders and then
extract and forward it. You'd just have to tell me how to get it there.
I don't use WWW on this PC but I can install Mosaic if that's needed, or I
could just mail you one or two files a day (since they'll be rather large)
and let you deal with it.

Hey, with the Web, this stuff doesn't even need to hog one site, it could
be spread around. Maybe it could even be accessible from my VAX account,
@ac.dal.ca, I'd have to look into that.

Let me know what you think :)

I need Sloan-related assistance from all you net.junkies out there:

I have approximately 800 archived messages from SloanNet dating back to
its creation in May 1993 (Thankfully I deleted all the noise: this stuff
is about 90% informative). I unfortunately have to open up some hard drive
space (this occupies about 3M in Pegasus-compressed form!) on my computer
here at work so it can be used for actual academic purposes. So, I'm
wondering if there's an archive site where I could dump monthly
collections of this stuff and thus make the history of SloanNet available
to its subscribers (especially the Taras and similarly rabid fans)
I know we used to have stuff at ftp.uwp.edu or something like that,
but how do I go about sending it there? Scotto, now that you're back
maybe you can shed some light. And this stuff will be of great use to
whoever eventually writes the FAQ (Astro?).

Thanks,

wondering if there's an archive site where I could dump monthly
collections of this stuff and thus make the history of SloanNet available
to its subscribers (especially the Taras and similarly rabid fans)
I know we used to have stuff at ftp.uwp.edu or something like that,
but how do I go about sending it there? Scotto, now that you're back
maybe you can shed some light. And this stuff will be of great use to
whoever eventually writes the FAQ (Astro?).

Thanks,

Guess Who won Guess Who?

1995-03-28 Thread Andrew . Rodenhiser
You guessed it. I correctly guessed that the picture published two
weeks ago in the gazette was of none other than Chris Murphy. My prize
package includes a PeppermintEP CD, Twice Removed vinyl and an orange T-
shirt with blue&silver racing stripe logo, all courtesy of Murderecords.
I also finally paid my CKDU FundDrive pledge yesterday (James will be
happy to hear that), and picked up, along with my beautiful orange Friends
of CKDU card, a few promo cds including Pond (hope Joyce doesn't see this
:), Redd Kross and an autographed copy of Underwhelmed.
Adam has "appropriated" all of said items, since my CD player and
turntable remain at home and the shirt appeared to be slightly less than
my size :)
I at least got to keep my beautiful Student Alumni Association mug,
pen, notepad, and a letter of congratulations.
And I really honestly did put in names for everyone who asked!

Best news I've heard all week! To be picky, I think this is their *first*

forward to this one. Anyone who neglected to see them the two times they
came to Halifax (or maybe when they came to your town) should be ashamed.
They really have great stage presence for a 3-piece.

Lucky Europeans to see them with a great band like Hole. Maybe if Per or
someone's still out there overseas we can get a review.

And I never picked up on the Rhode Island Red thing, that's kinda witty :)
