[SLUG] Treo 650 on Ubuntu

2005-11-01 Thread Pia Waugh
Hi all,

so I have got my Treo 650 synchronising perfectly on Ubuntu over the USB
cable, it just works :) However I haven't yet figured out how to get my
photos from the phone. Any suggestions? There doesn't seem to be a conduit
for photos.

Cheers,
Pia

The other way is to create a raw printer instance and use that as your windows
printer.

The problem you are having is that windows puts raw data out to the printer.
This is then sent to the ppd file in cups which tries to reformat it for the
attached printer. So you either get garbage or no data sent to the printer.
What you want is for CUPS not to process the file but pass it directly onto
the printer.

You can setup another instance using lpoptions, see the man page for more
details or add another printer to the queue with the raw option set.

[SLUG] Pitch for linux.conf.au, 2007

2005-11-01 Thread Jeff Waugh
Hi all,

A few of you are not subscribed to linux-aus, so I thought this might be of
interest here. You'll recognise most, if not all, of the names on the Sydney
2007 team list. :-)

Rock on Sydney 2007!

Subject: [Linux-aus] Pitch for linux.conf.au, 2007

linux.conf.au, Sydney 2007
==

We're a keen team of Sydney-based FOSS lovers, and we're aiming to host the
best linux.conf.au EVER. This is our pitch to Linux Australia to bring the
conference to Sydney in January, 2007.

linux.conf.au is rapidly growing in size and scope, and appealing to old and
new audiences as Free and Open Source Software gains popularity. Our team is
committed to growing linux.conf.au - and its audience - such that it retains
its intimacy and irreverence, and continues to represent the fun and curious
nature of our community.

We've covered the basics...

 * we have a strong and committed team reflecting a broad set of experiences
   and interests
 * a fully sponsored, proven venue
 * a rocking budget
 * keen sponsors

... and we bring some unique ideas to the plate:

 * a structured conference 'release schedule' (after all, we have the GNOME
release manager emeritus on the team!)
 * plans to handle the growth and changing demographic of the conference
   without sacrificing intimacy
 * an Open Day to grow the community, and show off our great work beyond the
   traditional audience of linux.conf.au

The Team

 * Lindsay Holmwood
 * Sara Kaan
 * Ben Leslie
 * Matthew Moor
 * Jeff Waugh
 * Pia Waugh
 * Jamie Wilkinson

The Venue
-

The University of New South Wales was such a great venue and setting for the
first linux.conf.au conference in 2001 - not only are we keen to return, but
the School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Faculty of Engineering
(FE) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) were keen to have us back!
They have offered to sponsor the venue in full if the Sydney 2007 pitch is
accepted.

The facilities include a 945 theatre for keynotes, four smaller theatres for
mini-confs and presentations - all fully decked out with modern AV equipment
and accessible with wheelchairs - and ample indoor/outdoor gathering space
nearby. Wonderful on-campus venues exist for the networking evening and the
Penguin dinner, along with plenty of cafes and shops around the university.
There is plenty of accomodation within walking distance of the conference
venue, in price ranges appropriate for students and professional attendees,
with easy transport from the airport and city, and on/nearby-campus parking.

Finally, for those not interested in the beautiful Coogee and Bondi beaches,
the university provides full wireless coverage and we'll have terminal rooms
for the laptop challenged.

The Budget
--

A growing linux.conf.au requires a tougher, more robust budget. We've split
our budget into necessary and discretionary items, and plan to wholly fund
the necessary items - such as the venue, speaker costs and the very basics
of our social functions - through sponsorship. This protects Linux Australia
against blowouts, and gives the organising team much more flexibility with
discretionary items... the fun stuff!

The budget takes into account the experience gained from previous
conferences, with local costings. It will be made available to the Linux
Australia committee soon after the submission of this pitch.

Sponsorship
---

We aim to work very closely with our sponsors to ensure they are satisfied
with their linux.conf.au partnership, and are keen to return for following
events. We have approached a number of potential sponsors, and received
their verbal support for linux.conf.au in Sydney, 2007. Smaller sponsorships
from local Open Source focused businesses will be an important part of our
sponsorship strategy.

Partners and Kids
-

We are committed to providing a mix of organised events for partners (and in
some cases, children) and free time where partners can simply explore the
city and surrounds with good information and suggestions in hand. We are
engaging with many previous attendees of the partners programmes to ensure
prior experience and suggestions are taken on.

Open Day

We plan to involve new audiences with the linux.conf.au Open Day - a less
technical event with competitions, fun demonstrations, a poster and demo
session for FOSS projects represented at linux.conf.au, showbags, and a
specific focus on involving students. Open Day will start at 2pm, allowing
conference attendees to participate in tutorials or BOFs prior to the Open
Day activities. Drinks and snacks will be available, with Pizza & Thai at
7pm to attract the "after-work" crowd and their families.

The only CUPS experience i have is that on OSX, and even thats limited
as my new printer I got some months back is a Workgroup Laser and has
build in ethernet already, so all I do now is install the CUPS driver
on OSX and Linux. Then install Windows printer drivers on Windows
machines and everything can print to the printer directly.

So much easier :)

Your first problem I think can be solved by altering /etc/mine.convs
and /etc/mine.types to enable raw printing as follows

Already have that configured.

The other problem is that on the ubuntu system you must edit
the /etc/client.conf file and add in the IP address or servername of the Cups
server. I prefer to use the IP address instead of relying on the /etc/hosts.

# ServerName: the hostname of your server. By default CUPS will use the
# hostname of the system or the value of the CUPS_SERVER environment
# variable. ONLY ONE SERVER NAME MAY BE SPECIFIED AT A TIME. To use
# more than one server you must use a local scheduler with browsing
# and possibly polling.
#

#ServerName myhost.domain.com
ServerName 192.168.20.20

Ahhh yes, I hadn't done this. This has changed things but still no go,
possibly due to the browsing configuration you mention below...will take
a look.

You may have to alter the browsing section of /etc/cups.conf on your Cups
server, by adding in the correct address range that is allowed to connect to
the server. The file is very well commented in this area.

Also it is always helpfull to look at the logs in /var/log/cups/ and see what
it is complaining about.

Looking through the logs as we speak.

Sounds similar to iinet (though iinet takes 90+30 for 40Gb/40Gb).

I pay 50$ for 10g/10g 1500/256 DSL. I'm entitled to ADSL2 once
my exchange supports this (because I moved my phone to them as well for
29.95$).

A relative of mine just got on an ADSL2 exchange of theirs - got an ADSL2
modem for free which could do 8000/1000 and upgraded it to 12000/1000
by himself and claims to get that much from the line.

I suppose it depends a lot on what kind of user are you - I hardly do P2P
and never did movie downloads so I hardly tickle the data cap and I actually
get along well enough with the 1500 though it would be nice to have something
faster one day. I use Skype a lot and the line is good enough even to
download bittorents (at full line speed) and still be able to talk to the other
side of the world.

I'm on Bigpond cable and I get 10Mbit/s down, 128kb/s up. Wish there was
more on the uplink.

Also it completely bites that upstream traffic counts towards your 10Gb
each month before you get capped to 64kb/s.

Oh how true that is.

I'd love some more bandwidth, although I make do for the moment. A
little more data would be good, but once again I still make do on that
too.

Gotta love competition.

Hi,Bigpond are currently phoning Optusnet customers in my area, offering `the same deal as OPTUS but 20% cheaper' (according to thephone guy).   Has anyone else taken this up?  Is it true? The standard deal with Bigpond is worse than Telstra:  their
`unlimited' amount is 10G not 12, and there's no 24G bonus on off-peaktime.  I've heard that they even charge for upstream traffic, unlikeOptus. So what's the story?  I'm very tempted if it's true.

If I got a $1 everytime someone came around to try and sell me Optus,
Telstra or Foxtel then I would be rich. Each time I tell them I am not
interested, especially those Optus and Telstra folks who wish to do
better ADSL then what I get already (supposely).

So many better plans available from other ISP's, Telstra and Optus dont even come close to them.

So why on earth would you consider either providers? Loyality?

2005-11-01 Thread Nicholas Jefferson
Hello world!

I have just sent this letter to Mike Kiley, Director, Enforcement and
Coordination Branch, ACCC. Now, where did I leave my velvet gloves?
}:-)

Kind regards,

--

As you may remember, I sent a complaint to the ACCC six months ago
concerning a software licensing contract between Microsoft Corporation
and Twinhead Corporation. That contract constrained Twinhead to
preloading Microsoft Windows XP on their "efio" branded laptops,
which, at that time, was their entire range of laptops.

Several months ago, after receiving your unsatisfactory response to my
complaint, I sent you a mathematical analysis that showed that the
existence of contract terms between Microsoft and manufacturers
restricting the supply of goods may be inferred from the present
market behaviour of manufacturers, and that this conclusion holds for
as long as manufacturers do not offer for sale laptops without
software at a reduction in price corresponding to the licensing cost
of the software. You have not yet responded to that analysis.

Recently Twinhead has been offering for sale "efio" branded laptops
with Linux preloaded instead of Microsoft Windows XP. For instance,
Twinhead advertises two laptops, the "efio 12KTL" [1] and the "efio
12KT" [2].

[1] http://www.twinhead.com.au/product_detail.asp?productid=153
[2] http://www.twinhead.com.au/product_detail.asp?productid=154

These laptops are identical except for the following differences:

efio 12KTL - $A1299
256MB DDR RAM, 40GB HDD
Internal DVD+CDRW Combo Drive
Abec LINUX Suite inclusive of Open Office Suite:
Spreadsheet, Word Processor, Presentation Programme

efio 12KT - $A1599
512MB DDR RAM, 60GB HDD
Internal DVDRW Dual Drive
Microsoft(r) Windows(r) XP Home Edition

I contacted Twinhead for the upgrade prices for the "efio 12KTL":
256MB DDR RAM --> 512MB DDR RAM: ~$A69
40GB HDD --> 60GB HDD: $A99
Internal DVD+CDRW Combo Drive --> Internal DVDRW Dual Drive: $A179

Thus the price of the "efio 12KTL" with these upgrades is ~$A1646
(i.e. ~$A47 more than the "efio 12KT"). Since these upgrades may be
effected at the time of assembly by substituting isomorphic components
appropriately, the difference in labour cost for Twinhead between the
"efio 12KTL" and the "efio 12KTL" with these upgrades is exactly zero.

Hence the conclusion of my previous analysis still holds, viz. that
this behaviour of Twinhead is not due to lawful economic
considerations, and, further, that consumers (and the ACCC) are being
led to believe that the price of the "efio 12KTL" does not include the
Microsoft Tax, when in fact it does.

If you are not prepared to answer my analyses then I would like you to
tell me the name of the minister responsible for the ACCC.

Please note that I shall post this correspondence online.

Thank you,

Nicholas

[SLUG] Re: smh media now streaming windows only

2005-11-01 Thread elliott-brennan

Hiya,

I mentioned a related problem to this earlier in the year (that I could
only intermittently watch the video at SMH) a little earlier in the year
and since then it's got worse.

Mplayer worked sometimes and they used to have Win or RealPlayer as an
option. Now they're just using Win.

I subscribe to the daily, so I've e-mailed them before and am now going
to write (paper that is - newspapers are a bit like Politicians: a
letter is worth dozens of e-mails) to them as well.

The best solution I've found so far is to install Opera and use the
Gxine plug-in. That works pretty well.

Mplayer has serious problem at times with the site and the Win media
files they use - Not Happy Jan!

Whatever their reasoning, it's pretty poor.

Regards,

Patrick

mplayer and xine play most Windows streams. There are also plugins
available to embed them in your browser, so the Javascript shenanigans
will probably work.

Realplayer was never that acceptable anyway. For a long time I haven't
had it installed and instead opted for WMP streams through mplayer.

i think you are talking about low profile pci slots

not all cards will fit into the (ie sound cards)
but most network cards are short enough that you just
need to change the mounting plate(? face plate) and
then it will be fine.

These look like a nice piece of kit but without any kind of networking
included, I can't see it being that popular. Seems like a pretty major
omission given the low cost of the requisite wireless LAN chips.
