 Hey Charles,

I installed mplayer on breezy just the day before yesterday. The
tough part for me was determining which repository was the right one.

I had to add this to my sources.list

  deb http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy multiverse
  deb-src http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy multiverse

After that, install was a 'beeze'.

Re: [SLUG] headphone buzz

2006-05-04 Thread David Mason
If you only have the buzz when using the front plug, it's most likely just because of interference on the connection between the front panel and the soundcard. Another thing you might find is that if you are only using the front
panel with your headphones and only using the back plug for your
speakers, that he noise is always audible, but just more noticeable
through the headphones. Otherwise, I've heard that the intel8x0 sound module always causes this kind of noise in the background (it did for my onboard nForce2 audio). Unfortunately the only solution I came up with was to stick in an old SB Live! card, and use that instead. The only hint I could really offer is to try to keep the wire from the soundcard to the front panel away from anything that could cause this noise.
Hope this helpsOn 05/05/06, Hal Ashburner [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Check the headphones themselves. I have headphones that work perfectly
but when I plug in my speakers I get this buzz occasionally and it is
because of something shorting in the wiring when it moves around.

Make sure your jack connects in a nice solid way. It may be possible to
open the machine and fiddle with the connector (or even replace it) to
correct a loose connection.

If you find it is the connector and you have no choice then a bit of
sticky tape may be the perfect solution.

[SLUG] I so hate X windows...

Guys/Gals,

I've spent the last few hours playing around with xorg configs in an
attempt to use nvidia twinview mode to allow me to have my LCD panel
run native 1280x 1024 (via analog d-sub) and TV (svideo) have cloned
screens. ie. whats shown on LCD is shown on TV.

I am stuck, and no amount of google has helped.

I either get both screens working as intended (but the res on the tv
is only a small corner of the LCD native res, cant get it to be
800x600 or 640x480).

or

I get the TV screen working at 800x600 and the LCD panel goes into
sleep mode when X starts.

Anyone have a config example and something that works. Happy to post
one of the many attempts I have made, but its driving me nuts. This is
one thing that has me stumped.

Thanks

You can't run a TV at 1280x1024 normally, normal TV resolutions are a lot
smaller,

btw you hate NVIDIA's drivers, X windows just loads them..

800x600 or 640x480. Which my TV can do.

I either get the TV working perfect with the LCD going to sleep when X

Re: [SLUG] I so hate X windows...

2006-05-04 Thread Mary Cudmore

Hi Michael,

I've got a working but clumsy system. Googling was frustrating for me
too - eg is there actually a straightforward VESA reference out there
for standard VESA modes??

Below are the monitor/device/screen sections from xorg.conf on my Sony
Vaio with an nVidia GeForce Go 6200. It's been configured as a clone for
our Sony 40 Bravia, which is *supposed* to take 1280x768 on the analog
input, according to the doco.

The X config below is working well enough at the moment to run MythTV
(esp after some aspect tweaking within Myth), so I've scaled back my
search for a more elegant solution.

Working:
If the external VGA cable is connected as X comes up, both screens work
happily at 1024x768. With some wide-screen and aspect fiddling, you can
somewhat fake a better result. If the external VGA cable isn't working,
the laptop monitor comes up as its native 1280x800. If I'm in one mode
and need to switch to the other, I restart gdm.

Not Working:
Different modes in the metamodes lines - ideally I wanted 1280x800,
1280x768, but I can't get 1280x800, 1024x768 working either, even with
pointed DFP and CRT tags.

Resolutions above 1024x768 for the LCD TV screen

Love to hear how you go.

cheers,
Mary.

Re nVidia's Twinview vs Xinerama - it's my understanding that they
attempt to implement the same functionality, and shouldn't be used
together. My decision-making was based on the simplistic statement that
Twinview is nVidia specific and possibly faster, whereas Xinerama does
cooler things but might be somewhat slower. If this is true, for basic
cloning with an nVidia card, Twinview is the better way to go.

Anyone else have this idea?

FYI, though you might have seen this forum already:

cheers,
Mary Cudmore.

I have done a fair bit of mucking around with this sort of thing. I
spent weeks getting three monitors to work so I know how VERY
frustring it is. It was a few years ago when mandrake was popular. I
found of all the distros it came the closest to setting this up...
though it needed tweaking

Perhaps you have already done this but i found that the monitors had
to be configured to generic types not plug'n'play in the config file
(in the monitor section) . The graphics cards should be ok. Also be
careful about what else you have setup. for example I'm told xrandr
and the Nvidia twinview are incompatible and do not work together.
Also just make sure that if xinerama is enabled that it doesn't
conflict with twin view

Michael,
If it's any consolation you're not alone in experiencing difficulty with
this. I've been mucking around with exactly this sort of problem trying

Still, I've seen enough reports of success to believe it can be made to

Heh, my cloned example from last month would look pretty nasty on some (most)
lcd monitors. I'm currently working on a tv capture card and I'm using a
different X setup now. It doesn't use the twinview feature at all, but runs
them as two screens. See appendix P of the Nvidia readme.

This way way you can drag and drop windows to the TV and full screening them
works correctly. It also has the advantage that you can start programs
directly on the tv from the console, eg:

mplayer -display :0.1 somemovie.avi

Another plus to using this two screen setup is that I now use it as my
default server layout, as everything works find without the tv being
on/connected and my monitor resolution is always what I want.

I tend to use Twinview for dual-monitors-on-a-card, partly because (at
least at one point) it seemed to be handle monitors with different
resolutions better.

But FWIW, Twinview and Xinerama do seem to play fine together. One
client has a couple of four-headed setups using 2 Nvidia cards doing
twinview over 2 monitors, and then the two twinviews stitched together
using xinerama.

Getting it working was a bit of a dog, but it's rock solid once it's
working.

Cheers,
Gavin

[SLUG] Mini machines for sale - Mini-ITX motherboard fan-less.

2006-05-04 Thread Vini Engel

Hi guys,

I have some mini computers for sale, they were supposed to be used in a
project that ended up not happening and some of the machines haven't
actually been used at all. However, they are not being sold as brand new
machines. The case is very small and external power supply, the
motherboard is a VIA EPIA M2 with a 633MHz fan-less CPU and
512Mb memory. It also features a CardBus Type I and Type II slot +1
CompactFlash Slot (non-bootable). Comes with a wireless 11b pcmcia
(Prism2) card with external antenna. There is no hard disk and cdrom
drive. The case can only accommodate one 2.5 hard disk and one slim CD
drive.

Everything is on-board and there is also one PCI slot but unfortunately
the case is too small to fit a PCI card. Detailed specs of the
motherboard can be found here [1]. Note that this may be a newer version
and some minor things may not be exactly the same.

More information about the case can be found here [2] the colours are
different as well. The ones I have left are all silver.

I have used these motherboards on Linux and FreeBSD for different
purposes, I personally have never had any compatibility issues or had
any hardware fault. These machines are ideal for embedded systems and/or
hostile environments as the board is fan-less, low power consumption and
low noise level. Also very useful for the ones who like having many
computers at home for research and development of anything but just
don't have enough space to fit many large computers.

Price is $350 for each, doesn't include delivery and can also be picked
from my place in Surry Hills - Sydney.

Should you have any questions or be interested don't hesitate in
contacting me.

However I try to give vrms as little as possible to moan about :)

[SLUG] Where's Sydney's Akihabara?

2006-05-04 Thread Mark Sargent
Hi All,just wondering where most SLUGers shop for PC parts etc. I miss my Akihabara ;-(. I ventured to a few of the small PC shops in Sydney CBD, but was bitterly, in a fun kinda way, disappointed(did I mention that I miss my Akihabara?-lol). Anyway, whilst I certainly don't expect to be pampered as much as I would at Aki, I do hope to get some sort of techincal relief with something more appealing than what I got yesterday. Hope to hear your thoughts on this. Cheers.

Umm, whats an Akihabara?

I usually buy parts from APUS http://www.apus.com.au/, which is purely based on

The closest to Akihabara in Sydney would probably be Technocity in
Chinatown next to the Capitol Theatre. But I doubt it'll really compare.

Your other options could possibly be the North Rocks computer markets

http://www.northrocks-computermarket.com.au

or the travelling computer fairs:

There is no real equivilent to akiba in Sydney. Capital Square has a
large concentration of PC shops which are good if you want a walk-in
sale, but the best buys can be gotten either from umart
(http://www.umart.net/), secretnet (http://www.secret.com.au/) or the
Computer fairs which tend to travel around.

If you are mainly looking for the best price on parts, then i find that MSY
has often had the best price on numerous parts I have bought. See
www.msy.com.au for pricelist.

As mentioned by the others, Technocity above the capitol threatre is quite
good for lots of computer stores in one place tho, but they all seem to be
about the same price on alot of things.

Other than that, for comparitive shopping, maybe check out
www.staticice.com.au - an online comparison tool for computer parts/gadgets.

Only the second greatest town in Tokyo for geeks. It's full of hardware,
