We where planning an SQL server for our AD anyway, but we would still have to purchase another pretty highly spec'd server. Re: [SLUG] A valid analogy.
From: Terry Collins [EMAIL PROTECTED] Evolution has no creator and no intelligence. Linux has a creator and intelligence. Not necessarily. It is commonly assumed that theories of evolution negates a controlling intelligence, and therefore an intelligent creator. Life had to begin somewhere. Who's to say that it's creator, didn't intentionally given it the tenancy to replicate imperfectly, just enough. Not too much. Not too little. It's a more chaotic solution than never ending control, but a great way to give it a better chance of survival against unforeseen environmental conditions? Some microbiologists argue that conditions on Earth encourage the start of the very beginnings of life and that it is just plain inevitable. This has been simulated in labs and is so easy, in conditions that are so common all over the planet, it's most probable that life is continually being created all over the world. Even if this where true, who's to say all this wasn't the intention at the very beginnings of the universe. This may not necessarily mean that evolution isn't controlled a lot more than we think, just because we don't see any means of control * I digress * This is probably for another thread, on another list. Anyway, with all that said... As the evolution of Linux has been controlled (fix/improve as you go), it probably doesn't quite compare with life-on-earth's more chaotic(???) evolution. Currently they are built using BuildPro, accessing/manipulating data on RedHat 8.0 DB servers (Informix/C-ISAM). Also Crystal Reports Writer is being used, but I'm sure this there are open source equivalents for this. MetaFrame was chosen many years ago as a means to deliver an online GUI application, that could run on any win32 client PC and then applications where built. From your comparison to Microsoft and Citrix, though, it looks like you're after more of a centralised server to run regular applications on. Well, any Linux box is capable of doing that, but the problem is that TS or WinFrame will run Windows apps, while a Linux box is going to have a lot more trouble (some Windows apps run on Linux courtesy of Wine, but it's very much on a case-by-case basis). If you're after something along those lines, then you're likely to be out of luck. Encourage your client to switch to thin clients based on Unix - much, much cheaper. I have experienced similar problems to what your describing, but not because of alot of memory, it was because of faulty memory, so you might want to make sure your memory isn't ill. - Original Message - From: Edwin Humphries [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 08, 2003 9:50 AM Subject: [SLUG] Redhat 9 install After a cumulative 15 man-hours wasted time, we've finally found out there are known problems with installation on systems with useful amounts of RAM. We had a successful install on a 64Mb router/firewall, but when we try to install on a 512Mb system, the install kept coming up with CD read errors - on three separate sets of CDs and three separate systems. I understand that anaconda has memory management issues. So the question is: has anyone come up with a work-around for this? [SLUG] Which Laptop?
Hi all, I'm in the process of convincing the boss that I need a laptop for work purposes. Looks like Im doing well, so Ill probably be looking at which one to get over the next few weeks. Ive installed on a few laptops before (old and new) so Im familiar with the kind of issues that I could face and how to get around some of them, but Im wondering if any of the manufactures tend to be more or less Linux friendly than the others. Im sure most of their support teams will fob me off, the instant I mention Linux (or any other OS), but there may be some that are willing to give me the information I need in my efforts to resolve something. God forbid there may even be one that provides Linux drivers Then again maybe not! Cheers. Eddie. ~~~ Im online, therefore I am! ~~~ _ Hot chart ringtones and polyphonics.
