I am proud to nominate Anna Buttfield for the position of Ordinary Committee

Anna has been an integral organiser and liaison venue for the SLUG this

Seconded. Rodger has been really helpful at events over the past year,
including last year's Education Expo and Software Freedom Day. He also
organised and ran a Mandriva installfest, and is helping me out with
preparations for this year's Education Expo.

[SLUG] Nomination for Committee Member

2008-03-22 Thread Rodger & Janice Dean
Hi to all of SLUG,

I would like to put forward my nomination as a Committee Member for the
upcoming elections at the next AGM.

I believe I can be a valuable asset to the club by being on the
committee.

I have served on the board of Holroyd City Lions Club, and was involved
with the Australian Air League in my early teens. I believe these can
bring new skills to the committee. Through these organisations I have
run various actives and events. From Art Show to Public School Debates.

Although I am only new to FOSS in terms of use, as I have just
celebrated 12 months of constant use of Linux. I fully embrace Free and
Open Source software ideals and philosophies. I have assisted SLUG in
the last 12 months at various activities and will continue to do so. I
am not a developer or programmer but more of an advocate and user. I
hope to delve more into these areas as time goes on.

I am active member of the Mandriva Community and assist them when I can.
>From running install fests.

I now put my nomination before you.

Regards

Rodger Dean

[SLUG] Nomination: Sridhar Dhanapalan for President

2008-03-04 Thread Lindsay Holmwood
Ok, time to kick off the nominations!

I'd like to nominate Sridhar Dhanapalan for the position of President.

Although his current position on the committee may be "Ordinary
Committee Member" there is nothing ordinary about what he's acheived -
over the last year Sridhar has demonstrated an outstanding ability in
leading our community.

He has:
 * successfully and repeatedly organised meetings and events
 * engaged with FOSS communities and companies
 * responded to communications to the committee
 * followed up on committee actions and tasks
 * acted as a spokesperson to the media

...all whilst being an active and enthusiastic member of the SLUG
community both on the mailing lists, IRC, and at meetings.

Most importantly, I believe he has the vision, determination, and
commitment to be a successful SLUG President - to build upon and
better the community we have, forge strong relationships with other
organisations, and keep everyone in line. :-)

I wholeheartedly endorse Sridhar for this position.

Umm, is that the requirement for the PUBLIC OFFICER of the inc. Assn?
Or the requirment for the committee?

Another area to check is the insurance policy. The insurer may
expect/require that all people are over 18 years and thus of legal age.

Quite a conundrum. I've read through the Associations Incorporation Act 1984
[1], and section 23 (3) (a) states that:

(3) A person is not eligible to be appointed as public officer of an
incorporated association unless:

(a) the person has attained the age of 18 years

Obviously IANAL but this would seem to suggest that as much as I would like to
accept, I would be unable to legally assume the position if elected.

I'm more than willing to go along with what Chris has suggested, but it would be
up to the membership to decide what course of action is appropriate in this
situation.

Cheers,
Lindsay

Pete, if you want to make a spiel, reply to this.
Well, it's probably a bit late for a big speech, but still.

If elected, this will be my third year on the SLUG committee. A big part
of my work for SLUG has been the ongoing maintenance of the website and
mailing lists. More recently, this has extended to care and feeding of
the SLUG server, with more than a little help from Chris Deigan.
Naturally, I'm happy to continue with these fairly important roles.

I've been putting more focus recently on expanding SLUG, through
increasing local community awareness of Linux in general, and SLUG in
particular. I've played a large role in organising recent installfests,
and aim to continue the theme of small, regular install days. This year,
I plan to bolster these through increased cooperation with Computerbank,
Linux showcase events to draw in the general public, and followup
"configfest" workshops, showing new users how to get better use from
their Linux systems. Finally, by revamping the ailing sluglets, I'm
hoping to broaden SLUG's appeal to the masses, without alienating the
rest of what is a geeky organisation at heart.

Will that do?

Thanks, Craige. Acccepted.

I'm keen to remain on SLUG committee and ensure that SLUG retains the
friendly atmosphere it has grown up with, and that it continues to foster
and support the Open Source community within Sydney.

I'm looking forward to furthering the policy we've started in the last 6
months to open up the committee discussions and make it easier for
interested members to contribute without having to be on the committee
itself.

Cheers,
Jan.
