It is only 99. Much smaller than the 134 molded open class planes. My Stork cost
$650 and was almost ready to fly. Had to install electronics and that was all.

Seems like a big jump in price for the same type of ship. Is the SUMMA

Sal,

It can be and probably is a Laser 2M. I owned a Laser 2M that was purchased
from Ed before you bought out the rights to the plane. Shortly after I
purchased mine is when you bought the rights and then Ed changed the
planform slightly and brought out the Faser. Shortly after that he started
offering the Faser 2M composite plane with a 7035. So depending on how old
the kit it is, Steve may have a Laser 2M for sale that he purchased from Ed
Slegers.

See Ya,

Ps, I might also add that the plane is a rock solid performing 2M that can
launch with the best of them.

[RCSE] Update ;New Volz Servo mounts in Muller Escape?

2001-05-26 Thread GordySoar
Just got a post from Sean P of AeroModel, supplier of the Escape, he has
tried to fit the mounts but inspite of their really tiny profile the hole is
just too tight.

Plus it is very annoying working with these mounts as they have to be
weighted down when on the bench as they tend to float up into the basement
rafters, or ceiling fans.

So never mind :-)

[RCSE] Cool Exhibit

2001-05-26 Thread Pat McCleave

Hi Gang,

Last night my wife and I took the family to Exploration Place (Museum and
Science Center) for an evening of fun and exploration. With Wichita being
the Air Capital of the World of course they have a major exhibit dedicated
to the science of flight. One of the exhibits has a mock up of a wind
tunnel which uses liquid instead of air to show the effects of flow over
various shapes. I have to admit I must have spent at least 30-45 minutes
setting at this exhibit making different slope designs and looking at the
effects made. It shows a perfect explanation of the boundary layer used in
DS'ing and of the stagnant air area behind the hill. I was explaining what
was going on to my son and it was not too long before there was a small
crowd of people gathered around getting a little lesson in the phenomenon of
DS. I wish Joe Wurts had been there to really give them (and me) a real
lesson. If any of you ever make it to Wichita and would like to go look me
up, we have season passes so I could get you in for free.

[RCSE] Oleg's RDS contribution

2001-05-26 Thread Blaine Deborah Beron-Rawdon

Oleg Golovidov,

I have read your note in RCSE about RDS. I have not actually built an RDS
setup, but I have done some considerable thinking about it. Also, I have
been back and forth with Harley a few times and in the end I understood what
he is doing. I also think that I have some idea what is troubling you.

Let's say there are three elements to the system. 1. The surface hingeline.
2. The shaft from the servo. 3. The bent piece that fits in the pocket.

The ideal RDS setup would be to have the axes of all three elements
intersecting. You might also have a little roller bearing at the tip of the
bent piece to reduce friction and to make sure that the moment is taken out
with the least force (longest moment arm). Lastly, the shaft would be well
and fully supported near the hingeline. This setup would have no slop,
minimum forces, and no binding. You could use this system in an airliner
and it would work well and last forever.

This is not how Harley does it. Harley's way works just fine all the same.

What Harley does is to use a vertically slotted bearing at the rear spar for
the shaft. Instead of taking the moment out between the shaft bearing and
the tip of the bent piece, Harley takes all of the moment out in the bent
piece by contact with the parallel plates. The front of the bent piece
presses on the parallel plates one way, and the tip of the bent piece
presses the other way. This gives a shorter moment arm and greater forces
(and friction) but it still works. The slot in the shaft bearing restricts
spanwise motion but permits vertical motion. This permits a vertical
misalignment between the hinge axis and the shaft/bent piece axes.

As to the pulling in/out (chordwise direction) I thought that Rob Crockett's
contribution was good - set the shaft length with the flap down - that ought
to get things pretty close since the bent piece can slide chordwise within
the parallel plates at smaller deflections. !! Note also that by slotting
the shaft bearing that the vertical motion of the shaft also accommodates
(makes up for) in-out disagreements!!

The fact that skilled and discriminating modelers are happy using RDS is
concrete evidence that the kinematics work. It has been my experience in
modeling that when my theoretical model and reliable experimental data
disagree that my theoretical model needs some work! Or that I am missing
something.

You might want to check out my website. I offer an inexpensive spreadsheet
that works out servo linkage geometry and torques for several setups,
including RDS. I also have comments about RDS in the website that do not
incorporate these more recent insights - I have not updated it yet...

That's all for now.

[RCSE] Sal got this one right! Psy-lite

2001-05-26 Thread GordySoar
I have been keeping an eye on things in TD and see lots of Artemis moldies
doing well in the moldy group but in the bagged plane group, the new Psycho
Lite is really proving to be the plane that is doing well for the group of
guys usually in the top ten finishers.

While the Addiction series of planes (since each Addiction is specific to the
orderer there really is only an Addiction fuse and feathers) has done super
too, they are pretty hard to get.

NSP's Psycho Lite is a single consistant model that seems to have that mix of
reliability and performance we all hope for in our new model.
For instance, In a recent contest in Cincy, I saw them float in light stuff
and come home with moldies in windy way downwind conditions.
The launches were consistant regardless of owner and equal to all the ships
out there.
Landings were runway style and the Psy-lites stayed on track and slowed so
that seldom did I see any spin outs for lost points. Very much like the
Mantis landings and unlike some of the moldies which had to rely on stick-ins
to avoid twisting away from the line.

In Florida a while back I saw exactly the same performances. I am not sure
what is different about the Psy-lites and the Spot Dorkers but an interview
with 'Flyin-Brian' Smith (one of the south's best thumbs) he says he's owned
em both and while the Psy-Lite is a little faster in the air, he feels the PL
has easily brought his confidence level way up during those downwind chases
and returns.

Thought you guys would like to know.

What am I currently working on? A Psy-Antis. Its a set of Mantis wings and
tail feathers with a Terry Luchanbach fuselage which is similar to the mantis
pod and boom fuse but with a psycho ish nose and cone versus the blob. Why
the scientist?
Just in the mood to do some building :-)

[RCSE] Equipment for sale

2001-05-26 Thread Greg Nuspel

After contemplating keeping my wing cutting service going I have decided to
close it down. I have also decided to sell the wing cutter if there is an
interested party. I have a few remaining wing sets to cut and then will shut
down. I am doing this because of personal time restrictions. The
wingcraft.com URL can be made available to the purchaser if they want to use
this as a business, this is an advantage since it is listed on some search
engines and websites already. I will provide the files for the standard wing
set but customer wings will only be supplied with their permission.

The machine has been modified from the original photos on the website. The
table now has interchangeable leafs for different widths of cuts. The wire
carriages are suspended from the cross rails so that they can be moved
towards each other. This increases the accuracy of the cuts for short spans.
The electronics used are Pacific Scientific 5210 stepper motor drivers
coupled to custom electronics that interface with the French software. This
simplifies the circuitry and provides protection from over temp, short
circuits, etc. Wire temperature is also controlled from the computer and can
be set for different foams, cutting speeds/temp and hotwire bows. A Pentium
133 computer controls the system (monitor is not included).

200 step stepper motors are coupled to the 10 TPI Acme lead screws. Anti
backlash polymer nuts are used on the axis and provide positive control.
Polymer linear bearings are used for guiding the carriages.

Maximum cutting cube 48x 28x 9 ½

I am asking $2,500.00US for the system plus shipping. If you are interested
please contact me for further details.

Sorry if this is a repeat I sent it earlier using the wrong email address.

[RCSE] Mantis - Psy-Antis???

2001-05-26 Thread Rick Brown and Jill Wiest

I wouldn't refer to this as a Psy-Antis, as this is Terry's nicer
looking molded version of a Mantis fuse with a slip on nose cone.

I think of these planes more as a Mantis 'ala Luckenbaugh'.

I've seen a couple of guys flying these now, Terry's fuse design with
Mantis wings, at the last ESL contest. Terry's fuse design is very nice
compared to the bare bones carbon rod and small nose pod. It's got the
wing pylon molded right in too, rather than having to assemble the pylon
to the carbon rod. There are more of these to come I'm sure, as a number
of flyers have gotten Terry's fuse to use with their Mantis wings and
tails.

[RCSE] NSP Omega as DLHGL?

2001-05-26 Thread Gregory A. Stewart

Has anyone considered converting one of the NSP Omega's to
DL?

I picked up one of these last summer later in the season and
didn't get around to putting it together then. Now, DL is the
rage and I have one very obsolete HLG.

Reading some of what others have said and looking at it, I
have hope. I think that the original v-tail may work ok as it
is an aileron ship, but more likely I'll need to shorten the
fuselage slightly and put on a regular rudder/stab combo.

As for the wing, I think the composite LE/TE may be sufficiently
strong... this is why I'm thinking this way at all. I'd expect
I'd want to glue together the center section (instead of just
bolting it onto the fuse) and add some sheet-fill reinforcement
around the throwing peg area, perhaps filling in 2-3 tip bays
with light balsa, along with a kevlar patch top and bottom.

Thoughts?

TIA!
