[RCSE] #11 Blades/X-Acto
Gents, this will definitely date me, but I used to do MECHANICAL drafting where we actually used pencils and drafting vellum (look that one up). There are still a few drafting supply houses left that carry a triangular rubber sleeve that will fit over a drafting lead holder (or an X-Acto knife) They won't roll and it actually improves the grip. Try it.
[RCSE] Purdy new BoT
Stan Myers sent me some latest pictures of his new BoT. It sure has come a long way from that box of sticks! Looks like Stan built a three-piece bolt-on wing, added spoilers, stuck the single spoiler servo in the center, and aligned the rudder ribs (Thornburg would be proud). Stan also used a good color scheme for the covering too. What really get's me is that all 3m of it weighs as much as a 2m! Re: [RCSE] catching x-acto knives
How about trying a triangle rubber pencil wrap, so the knife doesn't roll. You should be able to pick it up at the drug store when you get some more band aids. From: Oleg Golovidov [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [RCSE] catching x-acto knives Date: Tue, 04 Sep 2001 21:20:22 -0400 I had just installed a new blade in my X-acto #2 holder. After a few cuts I sat it on the bench, and it began to roll. The first thing that went throught my mind was, oh no, it will hit the hard floor and break the tip of the new blade, as I instinctively reached out to catch it. Instincts aren't always smart. Ouch! A _very_ deep gash in my finger. Luckily it wasn't too serious to be treated with a bandaid, but my finger tip did turn a bit purple before the bleeding finally stopped. I had an even worse accident. When my #2 knife started falling off my table between my legs, I instinctively closed the legs together to catch it. The blade went into my leg right up to the handle. Lots of blood and a scar to remind me of the accident... Do not try to catch a falling knife!.. Oleg. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Re: Bungee launching
Be careful when bungee launching a foamie expecially if it is not built for it. I have pounded two of them when the speed over powered the ailerons. Just start with a couple of pounds of pull and work up from there unless the plane is built for it. I would say that a standard high start can pull between 5 to 10 lbs. Maybe more but not much. If you want more then double up the rubber. I have seen people launching DAW ME163's with 1/2 tubing. It got a wow and a gasp from the on lookers every time. Several hundred feet strait up after a horizontal release. Re: [RCSE] DLG frustration
The two things that I can think of that would cause that are: releasing too late and hooking the release.. Releasing too early should only cost you launch height. By hooking I mean that your body stops rotating but your arm still is. This is also linked to releasing too late. There are alot of factors that can cause you problems but if it flies good then it is probably tecnique. BTW not everyone can throw a DLG to 100'. I usually throw to my javelin launch height. This is easier on my body and the plane. When I start pushing it alot I usually hurt one of the two but it is still better than javelin. Mike - Original Message - From: Dave Seay [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2001 7:14 PM Subject: [RCSE] DLG frustration I'm still not getting anywhere discus launching my Xterm Pro. I even went out an bought a Cirrus Gyro for it but the resulting launch is very little different than the one w/o a gyro using preset rudder. I have a peg in the left wing tip but am currently not using it. I have tried launching with the hand in various locations at the time, some close or actually in front of the LE, others further behind. The plane wants to do part of a slow left barrel roll wasting most of the energy put into the launch. I even added a little down preset and although it as a little more stable, the launch was flatter. I'm getting little more in height than I do on a javelin launch while my little Goblin, thrown in a similar manner, launches 80 to 100' normally. I'm wondering if I have enough rudder travel? I could change the EPA on the rudder servo to 125% or more and use the preset at 100% so the gyro can move the rudder the 125% during the launch. After releasing the preset, rudder travel would be set at about 66% to give me the original travel before these adjustments. [RCSE] Viruses are no joke
I did an alert on the RCSE about the Sircam virus which I've now received no less than 19 times at work - twice in Spanish. Before I did the post, I cheked out the virus warning at Carnegie Mellon (www.cert.org) and Symantec (www.symantec.com) . Nothing wrong with virus warnings, it's passing along un-verified scares that's wrong. Let's face it CNN is not a computer company they're the dread media, although I'm not clear that CNN actually had anything to do with the warning. Please don't pass along un-verified virus warnings without checking them out first, and include in your warning the URL on Carnegie-Mellon or Symantic (or similar) that gives the full story. Re: [RCSE] DLG frustration
I've been having problems with my Sidewinder doing an almost barrel-roll when I launch it really hard, even with a gyro. I had my friend watch me launched and he noticed that whenever it did this roll, it was when I was releasing the plane with my arm rising up. When I try to consciously keep my arm flat, or low, at the end of the launch, this doesn't happen. Re: [RCSE] NSP Deals?
I'd be pissed if it wasn't replaced too, although the damage might still have occured in shipping. A while back, a friend of mine bought an Opus V from RC Direct. It arrived in two boxes, with the v- tail in a seperate box from the wings and fuse (which is fine, that's how they ship them). On opening the box, he found the v-tail cleanly snapped in two. On further inspection, it appeared that there would have been no way for the v-tail to even physically fit in the box while it was intact. The box was way to small. At first, my friend blamed the hobby company, thinking maybe an uncareful packer tried to stuff the v-tail into a box that was too small. After contacting the RC Direct, though, they came to the conclusion that someone at UPS broke the tail in the original box, then removed it, and put it in another, smaller box, and sent it on it's way. Check out http://www.hollyday.com/rubberdata.htm for some tension versus strain data (depends on tubing cross sectional area). These numbers very closely match what I measured with standard latex tubing. Another common size for tubing is 3/16 inch inner diameter, 5/16 inch outer diameter, with a tension of about 8 pounds at 300% strain. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] NSP Deals?
Fortunately I haven't had this happen to me. However, my wife used to work to for UPS, part of her responsibilities included damages (boxes that are damaged or suspected to have the contents damaged). With all the different things that ship through UPS (which makes for some interesting stories and good conversation at home!), there is no way to be an expert in all of them. Anyways, my wife was required to open the damages and verify if infact the contents were damaged, if not than they were repackaged (often in a new box) and sent on its way. Had my wife received what you described, I KNOW (god bless her though ;-)) that she wouldn't have known that it was damaged, and probably repackaged itand sent it along. Just something to keep in mind. Tim Vandenheuvel From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: walter higgins [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [RCSE] NSP Deals?
