You can also use bamboo skewers to stiffen coraplast tails, etc.

Hello Jeff, I realise this is quite late but the balance point on the 2

[RCSE] WTB: Eraser center section

2003-08-25 Thread invicta421
After entering an edge of vision spin this afternoon I find myself in
need of a center section of an Eraser xtreme wing. Not sure if a
non-xtreme section would work, but I suspect it would.

Alternatively, if you are looking for a part of good condition
wingtips and a cleanly broken but repairable fuse, drop me a line. The
fuse is yellow and the wings are red bottoms with yellow tops.

Thanks,

-Richard

Re: [RCSE] Airtronics

2003-08-25 Thread George L. Meyers
I don't know if they still do it but, when I bought my Stylus 2 years ago
Airtronics would sell the Stylus direct to the customer at below retail. I
talked to Bobby Tom. My local hobby shop takes forever if you buy thru
them i.e., they said it would take 6 months to deliver a 50 Mhz crystal,
Airtronics sold it direct to me and delivered in days.

[RCSE] Big servos on Ruddervators

2003-08-25 Thread GordySoar
IF you did the servo calc for ruddervators on a open class plane, you'll find that in a total sky'd out speed dive with a heavy 3m plane, you need about 11oz per rudder vator.

The 225's have lots more than that and should last a long time...but what the heck better stout servos in the nose rather than lead :-)

I flew V's for most of my early soaring experiences and used HS55s on my 3m TD and slope ships..mounted right in the tails.

Saw a really nice Magic 3m this weekend that has to be about 10 years old with little Hitecs in the tials too.

I had one die and kill my Emerald as well. Good thing is that the wings
survived OK. Fuse was broken, but repairable.

All servos can fail, but it doesn't make it any more fun when it happens.

[RCSE] Day two of Lexington Kentucky's Mid Am Soaring Champs

2003-08-25 Thread GordySoar
I won againwell just open class today and over all point champ for the two days.
I stunk in Standard class, with the first round maxed and the last round maxed, but the two in the middle I got crushed by sink.  Fortunately so did others so I end up with some wood in that class too.:-)

My last Open class flight was a real drama flight.

Everyone was behind me in the launch line as we were waiting for a line repair.  Air looked pretty good naturally.  Course there was the usuall "hey Gordy, quit Stahling"

So I launched and my rudder servo unplugged from the RX and the plane popped off at about 75'. I had already had a pop off with my standard class plane that morning, so I had to fly it out...rudder less.

The crowd behind were merciless with kidding at first then, totally supportive as I found a bubble as I headed away from the winch.  I worked my tail off (no tail since the rudder was stuck).  I chased the bubble, lost and refound it for an 11 min max with a 100 point landing!

I've decided to leave my rudder servo unplugged !!! :-) (just kidding)

Fun day and some fabulous flying by Fly'n Brian, Don Harris, Paul Siegel, Bruce Davidson, Mike Remus and well lots of guys.

Other fantastic saves of the dayPaul Siegel proved his iron balls once again, by circling his Icon at tree top level way off field, then hooking up for a sky out.  Bruce Davidson, launched his Pike WR DS plane, right iinto a crusher bunch of sink and was down to tree top immediately, only to find a bubble and sky it out for an 11 too.
Landings were no gimmee today, as the wind was cross with some goofy gusting.

Jerry Shape bought the Extreme of his dreams from Fly'n Brian and Fly'n Brian fell in love with a Addiction fuse, Molded Psycho wing combo to take second todaylook out Jon Stone, your gonna be in for a big hug from Brian.

By the way guys, Jerry Shape has a gorgeous Fusion for a great sell price! Pretty paint. If you know Jerry, he is very meticulous...and a great pilot too. (yep whooped up on him today too ...I think someone told the guys it was my birthday so the let me win!).

Wish you all could have been there!  Don't even miss next year.

[RCSE] Number one reason for Bad servos on elevator

2003-08-25 Thread GordySoar

Not to reopen an old discussion but a clubmate of mine lost his Emerald
today due to the elevator servo locking up on him in flight.  The servo in
question was a Hi-Tec 225BB.  I know that any brand of servo can fail
unexpectedly (I missed a flight at last years Fall Festival because a JR
351 aileron servo quit on me between rounds) but we've had several reports
here on RCSE about failures of the 225 servo.

Hi guys,

The number one reason for any of the servos dying is linkage binding or stiff hinges.  Like all electric motors, they get hot when they have to grunt.  While the heat is no problem, consider what is the thinest parts enduring the most electrical energy in the motors...yep the 'brushes' and commutators.  I italicized the word brushes because they are actually just whiskers of thin paladium or some other fine metal.  The reason for using that has to do with allowing the motors to react to the smallest command to get moving, so the less drag the easier it is for the motor to move a stitch with beep of one digital beep of your trims.

Its one of the reasons why digitals have been smoking...they are trying their darndest to do what we ask, so when the surface is stalled or stiff, then the motors start taking a beating.

Hitec makes the finest stuff 'in a low price range'.  For the money they are excellent.  But those who chose them have higher expectations than the price of the parts purchased allows.  Thicker wire is more money...sort.

Are you all sitting down?  Consider this,,, the spec shows 40 ozs of torque.  Have any of you thought about for how long,,, each of you can run really fast, and if tested with a radar gun that could be put on your resumes for the next job.  But what if the next employer who 'bought' you, expected that you would happliy do that all day every day?

Having said all that, the point is not that Hitecs can't take it, they can, but if there is a stiff pushrod or binding linkage or the belcrank pivot binds, then the servo has to be grunting instead of just 'working'. Sooner or later it quits (no union steward to complain to:-).

So regardless of price or rating, if your linkages are stiff, chances are you are going to be bummed out by your servo.

[RCSE] Phoenix - from the ashes

2003-08-25 Thread James V. Bacus
Just last week on Monday, I was looking at going to Denver next week for
the F3J team selections and my F3J quiver was reduced to broken
parts. This is a terrible feeling, I had worked so hard to put some nice
models together and practice with for the team selects and they all had
been stuffed. I was involved in a launch accident in Dayton that piled in
my second ICON Lite in just 3 weeks.

But I am lucky man, I have true friends in our community.

Jim McCarthy fixed things that I didn't think could be fixed, two times
around. And built a new ICON in record time for me to use, never failing
to continually mention how slow I build. Robin Meek, Capn' Jack and Doug
Barry all offered me their ICON's to borrow, and I actually have Robin's
and Jack's here. And Don Peters at Maple Leaf Design got me the parts I
needed, his models are so modular that I was able to build, piece together
and setup these models exactly like my previous models.

These two pictures are very special to me, it's still a blur how I got to
having these three models ready to contest in less than a week, a lot of
things fell into place that only friends could make happen, but I am ready
for F3J in Denver, these models are all setup and ready to rock, here is my
quiver (3 different blends of ICON).

[RCSE] F5J Contest (Electric Sailplane) - Houston, TX.

2003-08-25 Thread Brett Waltz
Hi,

The Houston Hawks are looking to schedule a F5J contest in Houston early
next year. We are looking at either first weekend of March or April. We
want to be sure we do not conflict with any other type contests around that
time.

The format will be standard F5J classes and rules, to resemble what they are
using at the Nationals this October in New Mexico. 2 day event.

Any suggestions on a preferred date?

Brett
