Trust us Gordy, we are constantly with you
in spirit. Just the thrill of reading your numerous posts about flying
here, flying there makes all of our hearts soar with the Great Eagle. Just
to read about your Picolario made me dampen my BVD's. I know the ladies in
the group most likelylet a little giggle out, to hear how small you
got. I can't tell you what in inspiration you have been to most of
us. You Sir are an Icon in the RC Soaring world to say the least.
Please..Please don't ever stop posting. Do you know what an impact you
have on us? Do you realize just what kind of a responsibility you
carry? Probably not. I myself most likely wouldcease flying if
you were to stop your informative posts. I'm sure there are a few mentally
unstable that might even? You owe us! Please, please
never ever stop. Do us all a favor and increase the quantity.
Quality of course, I know, should never bea
consideration.
I wish you were here too, Gordy so I
could snap your little knuckles.one by one.

Successful!"

Met up with Mike and Charles Fox in Davenport today,.
Blue Skies, light winds and big thermals on groomed grass, life could
  have been worse.

My Picolario reported my Pike at 2,000' its a good thing that they
both were watching with me, cuz it got really small after 1900'.

We flew from about 1pm till 5:30, 10's and landings were the order of the
  day.

Mike's flying a Tragi 705, red tops, dark blue bottom and Red Fuse, very
  pretty sailplane that flew great.

Wish you guys could have been there!

[RCSE] BOT ARF Airfoil?

2004-07-09 Thread Jack Iafret
Does anyone know for sure if the Dynaflyte BOT airfoil is Nostalgia Legal
(exactly the same as the original?).

I think my I remember someone telling me the original was an E193 but I am
not positive.

I know the FG fuse is not legal but could someone use the wings on a
homebuilt wood fuse?

BTW, I read in the AMA mag that Nostalgia will be in the rule book as of
01JA05 so my tenure as Keeper is short lived :^).

Strictly speaking, the Dynaflite BoT is a re-design.
Though I didn't think any CD was anal enough to object to one.
The original had a 9.5% airfoil IIRC.

[RCSE] Photon Shameless Plug

2004-07-09 Thread Jerry Krainock
Gentlemen
I have delivery positions open in the July/August shipment of Photon
IIs. I will be raising prices slightly for models ordered after this
delivery. These models are high performance DLG gliders for sport flying
and Competition. The quality of construction has to be seen to be
believed and the performance and handling are to the same standard as
the construction.
A couple of quick comments about performance. There have been some
statements about the Photon and other poly models ability to penetrate
in windy conditions. Here in SoCal last summer, Larry Pettyjohn had a
very convincing win in SC2 Hand launch competition in a windy comp. held
in Long Beach. The contest didnt start until after 1:00 PM and featured
12 to 15 MPH winds. Typical summertime on shore flow for Long Beach.
Larry flew a Photon I at 350 gram and ignored the wind, had 30 gm of
ballast on board. Flyers in the field who have made the flyoff at Poway
included L. Jolly, B. Watson, J Erickson, C. Greening and me. Not a bad
field. The Photon II has less fuselage wetted surface area and a cleaner
wing mount + a camber changing flap. It is a fine penetrating glider.
And of course, there is always ballast.
Secondly, much has been made about the inability of Poly models to
launch as high as Aileron Models. Actually, this is apparently the case,
as a poly model presents the side area of the upturned wing tips as well
as the Fuse and vertical stabilizer to the airstream during the yaw
excursions. However, Watson, Erickson and Pettyjohn are all capable of
launching to 140 feet or better, which is about 25 lower than the
highest launchers in the country. The Photon II is extremely easy to
fly, especially at 10 when you are making a save, not a bad tradeoff.
Flying the Photon, Jonnie E has a couple of wins over Wurtz and and an
SC2 seasonal championship. Not too Shabby.

[RCSE] new plane choice

2004-07-09 Thread Robert Samuels
Here's a question that's been asked more than once but won't hurt asking
again.

I plan to buy a new ship. Choices are great. I'm considering a Tsunami,
Graphite, Graphite2, Tragi 705, Stork 2 Pro, Pike, Icon and any others that
are in this league. I'd appreciate advice as to which to get, and why.
Also which servos are best.

Thanks for the help,

2004-07-09 Thread George Voss
All of the planes mentioned are excellent. I've owned many sailplanes in my
36 years of modeling and truly the best one for you is the one that suits
your flying style. If you are a fairly aggressive pilot and like to range,
the Icon can't be beat. If you like something that fly's a bit slower,
something with more camber will be to your liking. The Graphite looks to be
the least expensive while you might need a second mortgage for the Icon, +
the long waiting list.

As for servos, the JR series of digitals are top drawer. Actually any of
the digital servos will work well. I prefer the JR and MPX digitals myself.

Re: [RCSE] new plane choice

2004-07-09 Thread Veronica Merryfield
 Also which servos are best.
Can of worms well and truely open.

It depends. My Wizard has Multiplex micro digis all round although they were
fun to fit.
My Nyx Furio has Multiplex Digis for the elevator and rudder, HiTec wing
digis for the flaps and volz wing max for the ailerons which was mostly
about fitting them in. My gulpsr has Multiplex micro digis, mini-millan has
jr341 all round. My small gliders have cirrus and others have hitecs.

As to ships - what sort of flying are you looking at? Slope? If so, take a
look at the NYX F3F or Furio if you want a bit more of an all rounder. Also
the Wizards.

If you are in the UK, Andy Ellison has written a nice artical on slope
planes in one of the mags this month,

Tell us more about your experience and your flying style. We'll be better
able to advise. If you don't know your flying style then buy the one you
like to look at the most.

The best servos are the most expensive you can afford. Personally I
think the JR
368s are the best - or at least the most expensive I can afford. :-)

FWIW, my Tsunami page:

Life keeps getting in the way, so it hasn't been in the air yet, but it
impresses the heck out of me. My only complaint: they didn't paint
the stabs to match the wings (missed this one for some reason), not that
the stabs are visible when in the air anyways.
If its good enuf for Arend...
