Seems there's a new Sheriff in town when it comes to wing wiring:

There is are significant differences between Tom Hoopes sailplane

The differences were significant enough that I am now the exclusive

I haven't seen these new harnesses, but if they are an improvement on the

that would be something.

Re: [RCSE] Berg Antenna?

2004-11-19 Thread Bill Swingle
...a minimum loss of range.

This antenna is not going to work as well as the stock length wire. Will it
be good enough? Probably yes. Possibly no.

Can your radio equipment handle the loss? Probably yes. Possibly no.

My rule of thumb (same as last time), shorter than stock is worser than
stock. No question. If the unit is designed well, the reduction will be
fairly small. Typically, on the order of 15%. But if it's done poorly, it
could be a lot more. Just don't fool yourself into thinking it will work the
same as stock.

Dave,
I tested this antenna last year and found it to work very well. I had the same range as the stock antenna. Be sure to tape the junction of antenna to copper strip to help relieve stress at this point, I did have one fracture at this junction. By the way have been having great success with the new little Berg 4 channel Rx . Best Regards Larry Jolly

Cool Jim,
We have been tearing up the skies out here with the Alpha Foamies. I put the antenna on my Xp# and specked it. I flew it at Poway with no hits or problems. I did no scientific measuring on performance. I only flew it on the Berg RX so this could be a point of concern. If you try it fly it by yourself first then move onto flying around other Tx's. [RCSE] Bird of Time 236 drawings FOC

2004-11-19 Thread HobergA

I just started my project of building a 5m (200 inches) Bird of Time, leaving my 6m (236 inches) drawings unused. If someone wants them, e-mail me an address and I'll ship them out. Only two conditions, serious interest, and keeping me in the loop of the project. I am building a 5m version, and would like to compare notes as the build goes on. I projected the weight of the 6m version to be around 20-25 pounds, and I just don't see it feasible for me to architect the launch system, hence the decision to stay with the "smaller" version.

Hello to all.
I recently had the opportunity to spend a month in Albuquerque, NM. I
knew ahead of time I'd be there, so I sent my Encore ahead in a
Sportube via Fed Ex ground. I packed it very well and it arrived in
perfect condition. I had some family obligations that prevented me
from flying two of the weekends I was there but I was able to fly with
the Albuquerque Soaring Association at the sod farm in McIntosh my last
weekend there. They're a great group of people and instantly made me
feel welcome. I had some extra room in my Sportube so I brought back
an Ellipse 4. I shipped it with my Encore via DHL and everything
arrived in perfect condition. Thank you Mr. Averill for the great deal
on the Ellipse! I'd also like to thank the Albuquerque Soaring

[RCSE] composite materials

2004-11-19 Thread invrtdnova

I want to start bagging my own wings. I bought Phils DVD set and
now know what to do. I was wondering what weight materials are
used. I listened carefully during the DVD and heard many different
weight cloths. 3/4 1.7 ounce glass- 3.7 4.5 ounce 80/20 but
heard no reference to the weight of kevlar used for the trailing
edges. I also haven't been able to find a supplier that caries the
lighter 80/20. I also would like to do this as cheap as possible
since I am only making these for myself and maybe a friend or two
and can't afford to buy lots of material to save on bulk purchasing.
Any info is appreciated.

one on the fuselage which is a solid repair that is covered by the
nosecone. The reason I'm selling it is because I just got another
plane and I promised my wife I'd sell this one. I traded a plane for
this one about a two years ago, installed my radio gear and have never
flown this plane. So the battery should be thoroughly cycled and

[RCSE] Foam 'Worms' - One More Time

2004-11-19 Thread RegDave
Well, maybe I can bring closure to this blasted 'worm' thread I started some
time ago. Just finished several things and the result is not very conclusive
nor very satisfying. Nickel version:

15psi or 25psi foam at 10in Hg vacuum - no surface defects in any samples.
Same result with either the 'Mighty-Mini' continuously running pump or the
standard pump (with reservoir) regulated at that pressure.

15psi foam at 23in Hg - one or two defects but much reduced from when this
adventure started - even an occasional sample with no defects,
25psi foam at 23in Hg - none

So there is some association with vacuum level and foam type.

However, much more attention has been paid to handling the cores when
peeling the mylars and that may also be a factor. The wing surfaces have been
observed to be more robust when heavier cloth is used so the very light nature
of
this lay-up may be a contributing factor.

Whether the lay-up is bone dry or somewhat wet hasn't mattered.
Whether the lay-up was 0-90 or 45 bias hasn't mattered.
The nature of the breather and whether the beds were inside or outside the
bag hasn't mattered.
The release wax may be implicated but not from the initial thought of
trapped volatiles. If the mylars are harder to peel off the core, you're prone
to
damaging the surfaces and that may be a factor.

I finally tracked down some 100% carnauba (West Marine) and that release is
not as easy as I got from plain old fashioned Turtle Wax. However, Turtle Wax
is rather soft and will leave a film on the cores when they come out. Pure
carnauba is usually a harder wax and does not seem to transfer much to the
wings. Maybe a longer cure time or?? would address this issue. Again, the very
light nature of the lay-up may exacerbate the ease of release with these waxes.

I'd definitely stay away from any carnauba that's labeled as a 'polishing'
or 'cleaning' wax. Those have a small amount of filler that tend to grab the
mylars a bit while curing. Out here in the boonies that's all we've got in the
auto parts stores.

Finally, I had expected some compression of the 15psi foam at the higher
vacuum pressure as compared to the 25psi. Nope. Wrong again. Just mic'ed a
couple of cores of each at the thickest part of the root. 25psi foam thickness
average (core plus skins) is 0.428. 15psi foam wings (core plus skins)
measured
at the same location is 0.429.

Bottom line, to be on the safe side, I'd use 15psi foam at ~ 10in Hg and
25psi at any pressure you want. But I can't say that's an absolutely hard line
to draw.

One lesson learned - absent this surface defect problem, it's pretty hard to
screw up the vacuum bagging process. If you see surface defects, try
dropping the pressure as the first response. If that's not successful, toss
the foam
and get some new stuff. That also seems to be implicated in these adventures.

At this point, however, there is no bulk density penalty with 25psi vs 15psi
foam. And the 25 cuts nicer (so far). 25 psi foam is harder to find out here
in the territories but it's worth the hunt.

If you need a local supply of carnauba, West Systems and/or PVA, West Marine
has dealers around the country and is a good source of all of the above.
Hobby shops preferred but quite often they don't carry it (especially PVA).
ACS
and CST handle everything you need and supply cloth in any variety you want
(hard to find anything locally) so they may be the best bet anyway.

Thanks very much to all on the forum who shared suggestions and experience,
especially Phil, Jon, Jim, Pat and many others. I doubt I've added much to
the body of knowledge here - if I hadn't glommed onto the 15psi stuff from
Home
Depot perhaps a lot of electrons could have been put to more constructive
use.

Now if I can just stop fuzzing up the edges of the carbons, these wings
would look really nice!

RE: [RCSE] composite materials

2004-11-19 Thread Phil Barnes
I just answered exactly this question in an email recently. Here is the
response;

http://www.acp-composites.com/
https://www.cstsales.com/home.htm
These two links are good for general composite building supplies. ACP is
best for price, CST for customer service. Fiberglass is generally bought
from one of these two, especially when they have a sale. Better prices can
be found elsewhere if you buy full rolls. I buy my Pro-Set and West Systems
epoxy from CST. The bag tubes, bag seals, and vacuum nipples come from CST.
http://www.carb.com/
This is my source for carbon fabric. You want the style 3350-xx. The xx is
just the roll width. I believe they have it in stock now, they frequently go
for long periods with it out of stock. You generally need to stock up when
it is available.
http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/
http://www.fibreglast.com/?GTSE=googGTKW=fiberglass
The above are suppliers from my list that I generally don't buy from but
they do have some interesting stuff.
http://johnrsweet.com/
http://acf.clark.com/
The above are suppliers of the 1.7oz style 120 Kevlar that I use. They sell
factory seconds of that material which for our purposes is just as good as
first quality. The good news is that the price is about half of the price
anywhere else. The bad news is that they haven't had any for a long time.
You need to grab it when available and usually full rolls only. For smaller
quantities of Kevlar and when not available here you have to go to ACP
and/or CST (the first two links).
http://www.macqc.com/
This is my carbon tube supplier. You need to go to the stock tubing page.
They have prices that are way less than anyone else and they sell by the
piece. They like you to print out an order form and fax the order in.

Let me know if you need something else not listed here or if I can answer
any other questions.

Phil
___

Some specifics to more exactly answer your questions;

All Kevlar used in the DVD is 1.7oz. style 120. This is frequently listed
also as 1.8oz.

3/4oz glass is used for the finish layer on most wings. 1.4oz glass is used
for tail layups. 2oz glass is used for a bias finish layer on slope wings,
also used in conjunction with Kevlar for leading edges of larger wings.

All carbon skins use the 3350-xx (3.5oz uni-carbon/s-glass)from CARBCOM.
CARBCOM no longer makes the heavier 4.7oz 8020 carbon so I am changing my
structural designs to get away from using it. Slope wings now use Foamular
600 cores with the 3.5oz carbon instead of Foamular 250 with 4.7oz carbon. I
have about 50 yards of the 4.7oz carbon left and only use it on center
panels of three piece wings (the Aegea wing) now. I nead to redesign that
center section before I run out of the 4.7oz 8020 carbon.
-
If anyone knows of a supplier for full rolls of the 4.7oz 8020
uni-carbon/s-glass , I would like to know about it. This fabric has 16 3k
carbon tows in the warp direction and 16 1K fiberglass tows in the fill
direction. I think ACP or CST may still sell some of this but I would be
looking for the source that they buy from.
--

I no longer use carbon for wing leading edges (the fabric strip that is
attached to the foam core before bagging). I now use a strip of material
that is 1 wide made from 1.7oz Kevlar plus 2.0 oz glass. This composite
fabric is made the same way that I do it for HL wings in the video. The
carbon fabric skins are trimmed with a pattern such that they no longer
extend past the core LE but rather stop on the LE fabric. This change was
made to avoid having to trim and sand carbon from the wing LE after bagging.

[RCSE] WTB Eraser or Stratos

2004-11-19 Thread Mark Williams
Due to the internal clock running out, much earlier than I had hoped, in my
Graphite I am searching for a new contest ship for next season. I would like
to obtain, if possible, either an Eraser Extreme D-box or a Stratos SL. If
somebody has one of these they would like to sell please contact me off of
this exchange. I don't need a ship that is perfect, just one that has not
been abused or crashed and requires major repairs. TIA

Mark

[RCSE] Antenna Wire

2004-11-19 Thread Mark Williams
Does anybody have a good source for receiver antenna wire? I have 3
receivers that I would like to replace the wire on. One was in my Graphite
and I extended it to 1/4 wave length outside of the fuselage using one
conductor I stripped from some Hitec servo wire. I would prefer to obtain a
reasonable quantity of single conductor wire.

Thanks,
Mark

hence the decision to stay with the smaller version.
I'm interested in any and all photos that may be taken during or

Re: [RCSE] Antenna Wire

2004-11-19 Thread Simon Van Leeuwen
I'll assume you mean single lead, and not single conductor.

Any multi stranded lead from 26 through 22awg will work fine. Unless your
application is on an extremely light aircraft (like a DLG), then multistrand
lead is safer, as a failure of one or more strands does not result in reduced
range...

FMA has some really nice wire in a light gauge, great for antennas. It's 3 separate strands, so just use 1 per.

2004-11-19 Thread GordySoar
I have been working with a company who provides robotics for the Airforce. The
hot deal for mine removal turns out to be the landscape device that gets in the
way of my daily goal of soaring (Harley Power Box Rake). I was doing training
for them today, very cool stuff. A lot like running an RC car.

Weather has been warm, calm winds and sunny all week. Only got to fly Tuesday
and today :-(

Flying home tommorrow.
Might head up to Wisconsin for T day.

RE: [RCSE] Foam 'Worms' - One More Time

2004-11-19 Thread Phil Barnes

-Original Message-
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

15psi foam at 23in Hg - one or two defects but much reduced from when
this adventure started - even an occasional sample with no defects,
25psi foam at 23in Hg - none

So there is some association with vacuum level and foam type.

Or some random unknown thing is happening that could have happened on any of
your samples.

However, much more attention has been paid to handling the cores when
peeling the mylars and that may also be a factor. The wing surfaces have
been observed to be more robust when heavier cloth is used so the very
light nature of this lay-up may be a contributing factor.

I agree with this. The mylars should peel off very easily. You should be
able to lift one end of the mylar at one wing tip and then just lift the
mylar off with not much more than the weight of the wing itself holding it
down. If it takes much more force than that or you hear terrible noises as
if the skin might be ripping off the wing then you have a problem with your
waxing methods. The mylar should come off so easily that it would not even
make you think that some damage could be done to the wing by pulling the
mylar.

You should also be careful handling your cores before they are bagged. You
may be denting the foam before they even get in the bag. Perhaps you are
even doing some damage to the cores as you roll epoxy into the leading edge
fabric. Take a look just before placing the core in the mylar.

Pure carnauba is usually a harder wax and does not seem to transfer
much to the wings. Maybe a longer cure time or?? would address this
issue.

If you mean a longer cure time for the wax then I can tell you that that is
not an issue. You can bag as soon as the wax is buffed. Buffing can be done
as soon as the wax is dry enough so that it doesn't just get wiped off by
the paper towel. Epoxy should cure to the crisp state before unbagging.

Finally, I had expected some compression of the 15psi foam at the higher
vacuum pressure as compared to the 25psi. Nope. Wrong again. Just mic'ed
a couple of cores of each at the thickest part of the root. 25psi foam
thickness average (core plus skins) is 0.428. 15psi foam wings (core
plus skins) measured at the same location is 0.429.

Thank you for helping to dispel the crushed foam myth.

If you see surface defects, try dropping the pressure as the first
response.

I don't think you've shown any evidence that excess vacuum causes surface
defects. You should at least have a theory as to how that happens.

If that's not successful, toss the foam and get some new stuff. That
also seems to be implicated in these adventures.

I guess it's remotely possible that you have a batch of foam with little
voids in it that end up just below the surface of your cut core but that
sounds like a long shot and not something I've ever seen. Other than that I
don't see a theory for how defective foam could look good as a core but show
defects after being bagged.

I doubt I've added much to the body of knowledge here

I think that there may be a great many people who have learned a few things
from the discussion whether the actual cause for your problems is ever
discovered or not.

Now if I can just stop fuzzing up the edges of the carbons, these wings
would look really nice!

OK. What's the problem here? At what point does the carbon become fuzzed up?
If you just spray the carbon with a light mist of 3M77 and then cut it out
as shown in the DVD and set it aside where it won't be bothered until layup
time then it should have no opportunity to fray.

Phil
