I a'm in the market for some carbon pushrods. I would like to order them
online if possable. I need 2 sets. One for a new RES sailplane and the
other set will be for retrofit of another RES sailplane. I need the
inner and outer and would like to be able to glue them in. I normally
would have done some searching on RCgroups but its been down.

[RCSE] Pretty Mantis Instructions?

2005-02-28 Thread Jim Prouty
Hi All,
I have a Pretty Mantis fuse now and noticed that it only comes with one
sheet of instructions that are pretty general. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how to install the tailboom? What do you use as a reference
to make sure the incidence is correct? Should I just use epoxy to mount it
or use a filler as well?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [RCSE] Pretty Mantis Instructions?

2005-02-28 Thread Anker Berg-Sonne
Jim,
I have built a whole bunch of those.
I align it by resting the fuse in the building table on the wing saddle. I
then use scrap balsa pieces to hold the tail boom up so its completely
parallel with the table top. Side to side alignment is done by eye. I use
thickened epoxy to fill up the gap between the boom and the fuse and use a
rotating motion to work the thickened epoxy in. Make sure the tail boom is
as far enough in as the instructions specify. Once the thickened epoxy has
set I put a glass and wrap around the joint and I put a reinforcing piece
of glass and epoxy that goes around the bottom of the fuse and way up the
pod and around the wrapped joint. This is probably an overkill, but I once
has a tail boom yank loose and was only saved by the fact that my skeg was
screwed in through the fuse and the boom. I was wondering why I had to feed
in more and more up elevator trim all day!

I will gladly point you in the direction of some useful information if you

There is a Mantis Building and Flying forum on the ESL web site with all

Please notice that there are two pages of topics in that forum. You could

That's what I had in mind for aligning the tailboom but wasn't sure it that

All of you that are complaining and sending it back or throwing it away
are you also sending back the coin that came with it. or are you all
just being hypocritical. If you really believe what you are saying
then also send back the coin
so that someone else that appreciates what the AMA is trying to do can receive
one with out having AMA spending more than they need. ( still not
saying that they

something is
better than sitting on your hands doing nothing, If this doesn't work
I'm sure they'll thy something deferent.

They are taking a risk. You do not have to return unsolicited mail. They
cannot obligate you in any way. If they say to return and say NO instead of
send in a YES, and they continue to send you material, you can keep or
discard whatever they send you. It all depends on whether there is some
small print on something you signed with AMA saying that you would accept or
like to receive offers from them.

AMA needs to know that this is not a good policy and that they should send
out a card first, before they send out a DVD. Of course, a DVD is cheap --
ask AOL -- and in the long run it might be cheaper than sending two
mailings. They should consider it a free sample and not require return.
They should include a YES card and not a NO card. They should only send out
the other volumes if they receive an order request.

I watched it and I am sending it back. The content was ok but I don't like
someone sending me something I did not order. Now on the subject of safety
that might be a question. I have not flown much power stuff but I recall
when I was taught I was told to use a chicken stick or wear a leather glove
when propping a plane. All I saw was bare hands starting planes ??? is that
a good thing to show on a AMA video.

[RCSE] I was up, down under and won too!

2005-02-28 Thread GordySoar
Carl Strautin hosted my Sydney visit and it started with a birthday breakfast
on Manly beach with gorgeous girls. We then went to fly all that Saturday and
I spotted a group of kangaroos sleeping in the tall grass close to where I had
landed. THought they were deer (which we are used to seeing but when they
popped their heads up instead of antlers I saw ears).

The contest was similar weather to last time I flew, cool overcast and windy.
We had about 10 winches all with mono. Man on man and everyone in the group
solid pilots.

It was clear immediately that Allan and Matt Lowe and another Matt were on
their game. Matt Lowe was flying an Extreme and Matt a Pike Superior V. Not
sure what Allan was flying I think a Stratos V (probably have all three mixed
up!). There were a few Pikes there and a some wood 2ms mixed in. 24 pilots in
all.

Carl was flying his Shandy (a sharon Vtail) and it helped. Span and visibility
both played a role that day. Matt Lowe was goiing to switch to his Pike
Superior X tail but had just refitted it and had some plugs in the wrong spots.

I was on my game as well and put up thee 1000's. ON the fourth flight the air
was clearly good so was looking at a gimme flight, but the line snagged and I
popped off. I quickly circled around for the catch and handed the plane to
Carl who was throwing for me in the wind. I apparently had slipped the canopy
back off its pin on the catch becasue about 20 feet up, off it came. The rules
here are lost part zero flight.

they decided on a mercy throw out so I was possibly back in the game, but on
the next flight I managed to draw another snagged line and then a broken line
for top of 200' in cold air. Carl and Matt both managed the average 600' (I
checked a launch with my Picolario for the heck of it) and caught the down wind
run on their flights. I hit a 100 landing but was short about 6mins.

A bad day on the field is still a good day and I had a great day because my
host and a total best friend won. (he'd have beat me anyway, as last time he
only lost by 2points to me, and did that by being greedy on time taking two
more wraps on the clock and then ending short of the landing zone.

He's world class F3J and me...I just travel a lot :-)
Wish you guys could have been there...I need more guys to beat now that its
LSF4 time :-)

Yes, definitely don't want to run your battery to less than 3.0 volts per
cell. That would be flirting with disaster.

I read the manual and it says that you can set your LVC to option 5 which
would be appropriate for the 3 cell lipo you are using. I would then set
the cut-off type to hard cut-off with restart. My preference is soft
cut-off because if I am doing hovering type maneuvers, I would want the ESC
to give me feedback that I am just about coming to the end of my ride and I
won't fall out will in a hover (ouch).

Good luck.

[RCSE] Help Mike Lance - Hillcrest imposing park restrictions

2005-02-28 Thread Jeff Reid
Concering the Laguna Niguel slope site.

This just started today. Guard wasn't sure what to do yet, but the owners
association wants to dis-allow street parking for visitors to the public
park (regardless if for glider, hiking, biking, dogs, etc). This would mean
only 3 cars allowed to the park at a time (assuming people don't
double park), plus no real means of checking the availability of parking
slots from the guard shack.
The guard mentioned that park visitors who park in the street next to
the park could get towed away.

Doesn't seem right to me, shouldn't the owner association be required to
provide a reasonable amount of parking for a public park?

Re: [RCSE] Res....Again

2005-02-28 Thread Augie McKibben
Glenn,

I bought a Soprano from Mark late last fall and have been waiting for the
thaw ever since. They are beautiful, great lines and excellent construction.
I had the luxury of getting to fly Mark's Soprano a half dozen times last
year. That sold me right then and there. Launches high, wide speed range,
can cover a lot of ground. The MH32 flies a little faster but I didn't find
that a hindrance.

I am still waiting for the thaw!

[RCSE] Breakaway fuse?

2005-02-28 Thread David Nasatir
Is there any virtue to designing a fuse to break in a desired spot? How
would I do that?

I am scaling up a favorite, but long gone 60 to 2M. The fuselage is
built up balsa. The original tended to break due to my landing
style. I am reinforcing the new one from the nose to a point behind the
wing saddle but at that point, the construction gets lighter. I suspect
I will experience some broken fuselage landings as a consequence.

Is there a way to construct the fuse (basic built up balsa box with
longerons on the corners of the square) so that it will absorb the
energy of a bad landing by coming apart in a pre-planned fashion so that
I can simply reassemble (no glue) and launch again?

Where I fly and my general lack of skill raise the likelhood of
destructive landings and...no matter how much I might practice, I don't
see that changing.

Thanks.

Re: [RCSE] Breakaway fuse?

2005-02-28 Thread Martin Usher
Is there any virtue to designing a fuse to break in a desired spot?
How would I do that?

The traditional approach to this problem is to attach the wing to the
fuse with rubber bands. Other attachment methods are also useful, things
like nylon bolts that break before the fuse does.

You might want to look at your landings to see how much energy you
need to absorb and where the forces are concetrated. A fuse will break
typically becuase its too thin for the weight of the tail feathers --
'T' tails are notorious for that because of the multiplying effect of
mounting the weight up high -- or because the main wing is rotating
around one attachment point to stress either another point or push the
fuse apart when the attachment point glues to a bulkhead. One way of
preventing this from happening is to apply a ring of filament tape
around the fuse at the weak point -- the tape is a lot stronger than the
fuse (along the direction of the threads) so it will spread the force
away from the weak point and so help the plane hold together.

Is there a way to construct the fuse (basic built up balsa box with
longerons on the corners of the square)

You could try filling it with foam. I've had some success with
lightweight fuses that tended to fall apart on landing (early HLGs were
notorious for this) -- the fuse became just a skin around the foam. I've
also used it on fiberglass fuses that tend to wrinkle (it also holds the
pushrods in place).

I've tried using Velcro as a wing attachment mechanism but I've never
been able to get the alignment right -- if its strong enough to hold the
wing on while flying then its strong enough to not fall apart on landing.

no matter how much I might practice, I don't see that changing.
You could also beg/borrow/steal/buy a foamie to practise with. A 2meter
doesn't land fast and a foamie is essentially indestructable so you can
focus on the flying without worrying about what happens to the plane. I
had a lot of problems learning how to land an early HLG because it used
to fall apart if you didn't catch it; reinforcing helped but nothing was
as effective as practicing with a plane that could hit things without
breaking. Its also useful to look how the foamie's made -- you can use
the taping techniques on balsa planes.

[RCSE] Plug-in wing wiring connectors: good, bad, ugly?

2005-02-28 Thread Steve Lange
I've got a couple of projects coming up with plug-in wings, and I'm
wondering if anyone would care to share their thoughts on using
automatic connectors to make the connection between the servo wiring in
the wing and the servo leads in the fuse. I'm thinking primariliy of the
DB-9 and Multiplex -style multipin connectors here. This would be for
larger (4m) scale and for a slope aerobatic (Voltij) application.

Obviously the downside would be the risk of a bad connection and/or
failed connection, but the upside would be convenience. Assuming the
connectors are mounted solidly enough, is there really that much of a
problem so long as you take reasonable care?

Thanks,
Steve
