As a matter of fact I just sent two of my Futaba 8U transmitters in for
servicing today. The repair service that Futaba uses works very well. One of
the transmitters I sent in was an 8UA system that some aftermarket user had
modified to put the three position switch on the left. Guys do this all the
time. I have not done this but it is possible to physically move the switch
to the other side and perhaps modify the wiring harness so it reaches the
new position. I'm a little hazy on what is involved since I have not done
that operation myself.

Perhaps a better idea is to send the transmitter to the Futaba service
center and ask to have it changed over to switch mode 1. If you go with
the do-it-youself method then you will have a problem if you ever want to
send the transmitter in for any sort of repair work. The first thing they
will insist on doing is to return the transmitter to factory standard
condition before doing any other work. They won't mind putting the
transmitter into factory standard condition as a switch mode one
transmitter but you will have to get that done before any other factory
service work can be done on the transmitter, so you might want to consider
getting that conversion done from the beginning rather than attempting some
non standard modification yourself first.

I have been impressed with the service they have offered and it did not seem
expensive either. They will fix every little thing on the transmitter that
you send them including the replacement of broken switches, etc. It will be
just like a new transmitter when they are done.

Here is a link to the service center;

http://www.futaba-rc.com/service.html

You just fill out and print a repair order and send that in with the
transmitter. For an extra $35.00 they will give you a two day turnaround
time also.

Phil

 Everyone,
I have the predecessor to the Super 9's. It's probably the same in regards
to most aspects but this one is a discontinued item. I have a
Start/Normal/Speed switch. It says twice in the manual If you wish to
 have
the three position switch controlling Normal, Start and Speed, you should
purchase the 8UH Helicopter system. The UA system places it on the
right-hand side. I wonder which techno-geek-college-kid thought up that
especially after you purchasing it! Don't get me wrong I really like the
radio for ease of programming. A normal powered acrobatic pilot who could
care less which side of the TX to place the 3-position switch to a
 sailplane
pilot who is right handed...well now it gets interesting. Now, I got fast
 hands.

The question is has anybody modified their radio and switch the switches
around on the transmitter? It's a discontinued item and haven't even
 looked
to see if it would work.

Suggestion, thought, ideas or I've been down that canyon road before...

 Best regards,
 Don

[RCSE] Are you using long servo arms?

2005-03-19 Thread GordySoar

Number one killer of servo motors and gear sets is long servo arms. In all
my experience there has only been one case where more than the second hole on an
arm has been 'needed' and that's on the Pike's elevator.
It has a long belcrank in the back and a short arm won't give enough travel
down for landing comp.

Long servo arms zoom up the current at the motor brushes (whiskers of metal
far thinner than any wire in the entire plane!)
Reduce holding torque by half or more.
Acts as a longer crow bar against the gear teeth, and give more
rattle impact (gear teeth chattering, peening the metal of the teeth
and increase gear lash)

NEVER use a long servo arm to reach out of a deep servo well, instead build
a 'deck' to raise the servo so that it is flush with the
linkageexit skin of the wing.

Use Transmitter travel adjust and servo arm location to get the flap travel
you think you need.
The danger of a servo whose motor brushes fuse to their commutator is a
system meltdown...as in the short draws the voltage down causing a crash before
the brushes melt and break the shortthis is usually broken by the impact,
and often the servo will work again.
One ofbenefits ofand reasons forthe Volz carbon brushed
motors is that they can't weld themselves to the commutator..
In any case

[RCSE] What do you have in your toolbox?

2005-03-19 Thread Dave Brombaugh
Folks,
I recently decided that it was time for me to start taking a toolbox
with me to the field.

I've been going with the theory: If I take it with me, that means I'll
probably need it.

The premise of that theory is - if I don't take any tools/glue/duct
tape/etc, then I won't break my airplane! :-)

It sounds good in theory. In reality, I learned last week that there
are occasions where it is useful to have tools, even when there isn't
anything 'wrong' with the airplane. For example - I have two new
airplanes for this season. One of them needed a little servo arm
readjustment. Fortunately, someone else at the field had a couple
screwdrivers so I could make those adjustments.

So, I ask - what do you keep in your tool boxes at the field? I'm
finally taking the step and am going to put together a good set of tools
(and supplies!) and keep them in one good, solid box.
- Dave

[RCSE] Solenoids for winches

2005-03-19 Thread mrmaserati
Has anybody used a continous duty solenoid for a winch rather than the standard
ford style solenoids we have been using for many years?

I am refitting two BS F3B winches with dual solenoids and am considering a pair
of Pollack continous duty solenoids, p/n 11-2570, with the dual LED warning
lights from Cal Postuma.

I'm thinking this turns out to be as near to bullet proof an operating system
as needed.

Any comments, thoughts or ideas ?

Regards, Dave Corven.

Abbott: Well Costello, I'm going to New York with you. You know Bookie
Harris, the Yankee's manager, gave me a job as coach for as long as you're

Costello: Look Abbott, if you're the coach, you must know all the players.

Abbott: I certainly do.
Costello: Well you know I've never met the guys. So you'll have to tell me
their names, and then I'll know who's playing on the team.

Abbott: Oh, I'll tell you their names, but you know it seems to me they give
these ball players now-a-days very peculiar names.

Costello: You mean funny names?
Abbott: Strange names, pet names...like Dizzy Dean...
Costello: His brother Daffy.
Abbott: Daffy Dean...
Costello: And their French cousin.
Abbott: French?
Costello: Goofè.
Abbott: Goofè Dean. Well, let's see, we have on the bags, Who's on first,
What's on second, I Don't Know is on third...

Costello: That's what I want to find out.
Abbott: I say Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know's on third.
Costello: Are you the manager?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: You gonna be the coach too?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: And you don't know the fellows' names?
Abbott: Well I should.
Costello: Well then who's on first?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: I mean the fellow's name.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The guy on first.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The first baseman.
Abbott: Who.
Costello: The guy playing...
Abbott: Who is on first!

I like to have Scotch tape (for canopy hold down, taping loose monokote, etc.), a whattmeter, multimeter, modelers pins (to open up clogged glue spouts), spares of anything and everything (props for my electric stuff, nylon bolts, etc.), all my tools, AMA card, scissor, miscellaneous odds and ends that makes my large Multiplex tool box weigh about 35 pounds.

Subject: [RCSE] What do you have in your toolbox?

Folks,

I recently decided that it was time for me to start taking a toolbox with me to the field.

Ive been going with the theory: If I take it with me, that means Ill probably need it.

The premise of that theory is if I dont take any tools/glue/duct tape/etc, then I wont break my airplane! J

It sounds good in theory. In reality, I learned last week that there are occasions where it is useful to have tools, even when there isnt anything wrong with the airplane. For example I have two new airplanes for this season. One of them needed a little servo arm readjustment. Fortunately, someone else at the field had a couple screwdrivers so I could make those adjustments.

So, I ask what do you keep in your tool boxes at the field? Im finally taking the step and am going to put together a good set of tools (and supplies!) and keep them in one good, solid box.

RE: [RCSE] What do you have in your toolbox?

2005-03-19 Thread George Voss
I have a serious bad back so I have managed to thin down my toolbox as much
as possible. I've narrowed it down to 5-min epoxy, CA, ballast, forceps,
scissors, wing root tape and FG reinforced packing tape. A few small scraps
of plywood and balsa, an assortment of JIS screwdrivers, metric and SAE
Allen wrenches, an ESV, some small pliers, X-Acto knife, sunscreen and a
small injury box with ointment, band aids and the like. That's all in the
toolbox. Chargers and similar items are also taken but not specifically in
the toolbox. If I fly power, I take this box and an additional one with
everything I need to fly glow or gas. This leaves me with a fairly light
tool box I can haul around by myself. I rarely fly alone either so what I
didn't bring, by buddies' did.

If I go to an out of town contest or a couple day trip to the slope I'll
pack just about everything from spare servo wire and a butane soldering
iron, to covering tools and scalpels. I have all my covering tools in a
clear plastic box, as are my extra batteries, radio equipment etc. I simply
toss the boxes in the back of the truck. I rarely need anything for myself
due to Murphy's Law of inverse spares that states; you will only need what
you don't bring and what you do bring is for someone else's repairs.

Finally, I always take my cordless drill and drill bits. The last out of
town trip I took was my buddies' turn to drive. He questioned the need for
having to put my drill behind the seat. I told him I'd used it more than
I'd imagined. We ended up using it to remove wingrod that had been pushed
it's full length into the wing. We drilled a pilot hole and stopped the
drill mid-cut so it was stuck in the hole. I pulled on the drill with the
bit in the rod and it removed the rod far enough so the pilot could remove
it from the wing.

Have any of you bought the new version? Is it worth the extra ? Is the

Home Depot here recently offered the Black and Decker RTX-3S rotary tool for
$20 bucks, with several accessories. This is a 3 speed outfit that normally
sells for $30 bucks. It's made in China but has a much more solid feel than
any Dremel I've ever owned. I do not have any of the new models, however.

diagonal cutters, wire stripper, butane soldering iron flux solder,
Bic lighter, sissors.

Bits pieces:
CyA glue; thin, foam safe, and kicker (in a *seperate* bag). 5 minute
epoxy, mixing cups sticks, 1.5 oz glass cloth, latex gloves, spring
clamps, T pins, clear Zagi tape, strapping tape, electrical tape,
hinge tape, heat shrink tubing various sizes, butane (for iron), desolder
braid, servo wire, servo gear sets in my sizes, servo horns, control
horns, pcboard, clevises, ball joints, threaded rods, tyvek hinges, dental
floss (un waxed), rubber bands, screws of various sizes, nuts bolts
various sizes, nylon bolts various sizes, reciever xtals various
frequencies, note pad, lead bars from 1/4 oz to twelve oz, saran wrap, and
shame of shames; various electric props, neo sporan ointment, band-aides,
sun screen.

I also carry two battery chargers, batteries both reciever and electric
power packs. Yeah, I admit it I fly electrics too...

Overkill? Prolly, but I can patch any break at the field and often have
the bit *you* need to borrow... It all fits in one tackle box and doesn't
weigh that much at all ;-)

[RCSE] Tungsten/Anviloy Ballast update

Well, I shouldnt have worried about cutting up my Anviloy/tungsten alloy

I used a commercial duty powered band saw with a fresh bi metal blade. It
cut thru the stuff much better than expected. Then dressed the ends with a
upright belt sander flush/flat. The whole process was quite easy. Gotta
say this is some pretty heavy ballast!
