The repair service that Futaba uses works very well. One of the transmitters I sent in was an 8UA system that some aftermarket user had modified to put the three position switch on the left. Guys do this all the time. I have not done this but it is possible to physically move the switch to the other side and perhaps modify the wiring harness so it reaches the new position. I'm a little hazy on what is involved since I have not done that operation myself. Perhaps a better idea is to send the transmitter to the Futaba service center and ask to have it changed over to switch mode 1. If you go with the do-it-youself method then you will have a problem if you ever want to send the transmitter in for any sort of repair work. The first thing they will insist on doing is to return the transmitter to factory standard condition before doing any other work. They won't mind putting the transmitter into factory standard condition as a switch mode one transmitter but you will have to get that done before any other factory service work can be done on the transmitter, so you might want to consider getting that conversion done from the beginning rather than attempting some non standard modification yourself first. I have been impressed with the service they have offered and it did not seem expensive either. They will fix every little thing on the transmitter that you send them including the replacement of broken switches, etc. It will be just like a new transmitter when they are done. Here is a link to the service center; http://www.futaba-rc.com/service.html You just fill out and print a repair order and send that in with the transmitter. For an extra $35.00 they will give you a two day turnaround time also. It's probably the same in regards to most aspects but this one is a discontinued item. I have a Start/Normal/Speed switch. It says twice in the manual If you wish to have the three position switch controlling Normal, Start and Speed, you should purchase the 8UH Helicopter system. The UA system places it on the right-hand side. I wonder which techno-geek-college-kid thought up that especially after you purchasing it! Don't get me wrong I really like the radio for ease of programming. A normal powered acrobatic pilot who could care less which side of the TX to place the 3-position switch to a sailplane pilot who is right handed...well now it gets interesting. Now, I got fast hands. The question is has anybody modified their radio and switch the switches around on the transmitter? It's a discontinued item and haven't even looked to see if it would work. Suggestion, thought, ideas or I've been down that canyon road before... Best regards, Don RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Are you using long servo arms?
Number one killer of servo motors and gear sets is long servo arms. In all my experience there has only been one case where more than the second hole on an arm has been 'needed' and that's on the Pike's elevator. It has a long belcrank in the back and a short arm won't give enough travel down for landing comp. Long servo arms zoom up the current at the motor brushes (whiskers of metal far thinner than any wire in the entire plane!) Reduce holding torque by half or more. Acts as a longer crow bar against the gear teeth, and give more rattle impact (gear teeth chattering, peening the metal of the teeth and increase gear lash) NEVER use a long servo arm to reach out of a deep servo well, instead build a 'deck' to raise the servo so that it is flush with the linkageexit skin of the wing. Use Transmitter travel adjust and servo arm location to get the flap travel you think you need. The danger of a servo whose motor brushes fuse to their commutator is a system meltdown...as in the short draws the voltage down causing a crash before the brushes melt and break the shortthis is usually broken by the impact, and often the servo will work again. One ofbenefits ofand reasons forthe Volz carbon brushed motors is that they can't weld themselves to the commutator.. In any case

[RCSE] What do you have in your toolbox?
Folks, I recently decided that it was time for me to start taking a toolbox with me to the field. I've been going with the theory: If I take it with me, that means I'll probably need it. The premise of that theory is - if I don't take any tools/glue/duct tape/etc, then I won't break my airplane! :-) It sounds good in theory. In reality, I learned last week that there are occasions where it is useful to have tools, even when there isn't anything 'wrong' with the airplane. For example - I have two new airplanes for this season. One of them needed a little servo arm readjustment. Fortunately, someone else at the field had a couple screwdrivers so I could make those adjustments. So, I ask - what do you keep in your tool boxes at the field? I'm finally taking the step and am going to put together a good set of tools (and supplies!) and keep them in one good, solid box. - Dave attachment: winmail.dat

[RCSE] Solenoids for winches
Has anybody used a continous duty solenoid for a winch rather than the standard ford style solenoids we have been using for many years? RE: [RCSE] What do you have in your toolbox?
I have a serious bad back so I have managed to thin down my toolbox as much as possible. I've narrowed it down to 5-min epoxy, CA, ballast, forceps, scissors, wing root tape and FG reinforced packing tape. A few small scraps of plywood and balsa, an assortment of JIS screwdrivers, metric and SAE Allen wrenches, an ESV, some small pliers, X-Acto knife, sunscreen and a small injury box with ointment, band aids and the like. That's all in the toolbox. Chargers and similar items are also taken but not specifically in the toolbox. If I fly power, I take this box and an additional one with everything I need to fly glow or gas. This leaves me with a fairly light tool box I can haul around by myself. I rarely fly alone either so what I didn't bring, by buddies' did. If I go to an out of town contest or a couple day trip to the slope I'll pack just about everything from spare servo wire and a butane soldering iron, to covering tools and scalpels. I have all my covering tools in a clear plastic box, as are my extra batteries, radio equipment etc. I simply toss the boxes in the back of the truck. I rarely need anything for myself due to Murphy's Law of inverse spares that states; you will only need what you don't bring and what you do bring is for someone else's repairs. Finally, I always take my cordless drill and drill bits. The last out of town trip I took was my buddies' turn to drive. He questioned the need for having to put my drill behind the seat. I told him I'd used it more than I'd imagined. We ended up using it to remove wingrod that had been pushed it's full length into the wing. We drilled a pilot hole and stopped the drill mid-cut so it was stuck in the hole. I pulled on the drill with the bit in the rod and it removed the rod far enough so the pilot could remove it from the wing. -Original Message- From: Dave Brombaugh [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Folks, I recently decided that it was time for me to start taking a toolbox with me to the field. - Dave RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Dremel tool
Having worn out another Dremel tool, so I'm shopping for a new one. Tower has one for $64 which is the older version with less accessories. Home Depot has the fancy new version with more accessories for $79. The also have the new and more expensive cordless. Have any of you bought the new version? Is it worth the extra ? Is the cordless worth yet even more? Thanks in advance. Randy RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Dremel tool
Home Depot here recently offered the Black and Decker RTX-3S rotary tool for $20 bucks, with several accessories. This is a 3 speed outfit that normally sells for $30 bucks. It's made in China but has a much more solid feel than any Dremel I've ever owned. I do not have any of the new models, however. - Original Message - From: Randy Bullard [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: RCSE soaring@airage.com Sent: Saturday, March 19, 2005 6:38 PM Subject: [RCSE] Dremel tool Having worn out another Dremel tool, so I'm shopping for a new one. Re: [RCSE] Solenoids for winches
I have already copied your buzzer article. It looks very interesting and I will probably incorporate the system. Thanks Miamimike. I have another inquiry. RE: [RCSE] Solenoids for winches
I like the Icom IC-R2. It will let you setup any of the RC freqs (27, 50, 72MHz) and much more. I also like to listen to full scale comms on it as well. [RCSE] Tungsten/Anviloy Ballast update
Well, I shouldnt have worried about cutting up my Anviloy/tungsten alloy ballast stock. I used a commercial duty powered band saw with a fresh bi metal blade. It cut thru the stuff much better than expected. Then dressed the ends with a upright belt sander flush/flat. The whole process was quite easy. Gotta say this is some pretty heavy ballast! I use Stancor 586-902 586 series DC power contactors. Rated at 200A continuous and 600A inrush. Silver contacts. Newark part number is 44F3645, $43 each. [RCSE] Passing of a Friend and club member
Hi all, Some of you may have known Mike Gee of Grants Pass, OR, formerly of the Bay area of California, a member and Vice-President of the Southern Oregon Soaring Society, he was into scale aero-tow events including St. Louis, last year. Mike passed away last Thursday after suffering a heart attack. Arrangements are pending. We have truly lost a good friend and clubmate. Mike Reed also of SOSS, most likely summed it up best I wasn't ready for him to leave yet, and I certainly wasn't done being friends with him. Cards or letters may be sent to his wife, Dianne at 464 W. Jones Creek Rd., Grants Pass, OR 97526 if anyone needs the phone number you can email me, as I will not publish it here. Mike will be SOARING forever now. Jerry Miller, SOSS member and founder Medford, OR RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Dremel tool
I bought the variable cordless model and I like it! It has all the tidbits that I use and ones I don't grin. The one I really like that is an optional item is the diamond wheel cutter. [EMAIL PROTECTED] it cuts through stuff like crazy! The cordless model I got has a large carrying case that I am able to store my corded model in addition to my cordless one. I bought an extra battery and the fast charger just in case I have some large project and need the extra battery time and portability. Re: [RCSE] What do you have in your toolbox?
A long, long time ago (1979), I flew with some guys from the Rocky Mountain Soaring Association in Denver. One of their members had a large fancy tackle box, apparently suitable for a bass-boat episode of American Sportsman. Someone challenged me to ask him what's in his flight box. So I did. What I found was a quarter, a piece of lead and a sock. Thinking about it... priceless. Loren RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Dremel tool (Proxon is better)
I gave up on the dremel a few years ago after my replacement for the one that burnt out fell apart ( the armature literally did) in just over a year. I now use Proxon (made in Germany) you can feel they are much better made from first use, don't know if you can get them over in the states though regards Chris UK - Original Message - From: glide [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Randy Bullard' [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 'RCSE' soaring@airage.com Sent: Sunday, March 20, 2005 4:24 AM Subject: RE: [RCSE] Dremel tool I bought the variable cordless model and I like it!
