Re: [RCSE] Compile: What do you have in your toolbox?
I have three tool boxes depending on where I am flying. 1. Local flying at the Airfoilers model field. A cardboard coke flat notched to fit the fuselage containing a roll of wing tape and a pair of scissors. If I need more, I run home to do the work. 2. Contest where I travel on the airlines. A canvas tool pouch I bought from the original Bag Lady at Visalia many years ago containing a screw driver, Phillips screw driver, ball driver for 4-40 socket head cap screws, tow hook wrench, scissors, Xacto knife, small needle nose pliers, small pair of dikes, and a stopwatch. Tool pouch, Smart Charge, and wing tape are carried in the archery bow case that I used to ship the model as checked luggage. Don't fly to contest any more because of the Terminal Stupid Asses. 3. Contests that I travel to in my van. A tool box with the usual assortment of tools and emergency supplies, spare model, spare transmitter, and a Smart Charge permantly mounted in the van. Great value! _https://www.fmadirect.com/site/fma.htm?body=Productscat=31_ (https://www.fmadirect.com/site/fma.htm?body=Productscat=31) Okay so I couldn't go to Toledo without buying something and FMA had this little walmart type toy cessna electric RTF. It is unique in that it uses a tail rotor built into the rudder for yaw, instead of using a rudder. The box is its' carry/protective case. You could mail it in the box safely. It comes completely ready to fly, except for 6 AA batteries for the TX/Charger. Yep the Tx is the plane's charger. You simply pull the battery out of the bottom hatch in the plane, and plug it into the charging socket in the TX. The battery has a mood dot (thermal sensitive color changing dot) which tells you that the battery is charged...but you can tell just as well by felling the heat build...and it gets really warm when it is charged. Anyway, you cut some trim tabs lose on the rudder, ailerons an elevator locations. Then give it a toss motor off to check that it is flying VERY straight and flat If it curves, you will have a challenge keeping it on the field Flying it is a ball, it flys really well and climbs out pretty well specially when it hits a thermal. The way it is set up, the motor on causes it to climb, plenty of up thrust. It climbs, stalls and climbs again. Using the tail rotor is a trick to get it to come around, but it does work. I found that pulsing it provides more force. Did I mention its a lot of fun? It is a Park Flyer only in size, it is not something you would attempt to fly indoors or in an area where there are a lot of trees bordering the perimeter. It is durable, cuz I bopped it in a few times. Wind is not its friend...so calm weather or light breezes is best. Fun stuff Gordy RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Each one is tested with a Tx and Servo situation before going in the package. I think it was Aroosh who mentioned that after all the science stuff was done (mechanicals like cold and hot and vibration) they took the ones they sent me and threw them on the ground a few time really hard ( I was wondering how the shrink tubing got scuffed!) to see if some circuit would open or something would break off. [RCSE] LSF Achievement Weekend Update
Less than 6 weeks remain until the Wilson Lake KS LSF Achievement Weekend. Ive had a large number of inquiries about the event, but the current sign-up list is surprisingly small. This will be the perfect weekend for those of us in the Midwest to get our 2, 4, and 8-hour slope flights to add to or complete our LSF Level 3, 4, or 5. We have a contingent plan if the wind doesnt blow, and that would be thermal contests. The goal is to have at least 20 pilots so the Level 4 and 5 pilots can gain valuable points. The thermal tasks will be multiple during the weekend so we can maximize points gain. Those who complete their Level 4 and 5 tasks will be honored at the Saturday night banquet. There is a local PO to date your application mailing so those finishing one level can get started on the next level. All in all, it looks to be a great time. We are limiting entry to one person per frequency. So far, the available frequencies are everything except 12 and 45. Id really like to see this weekend come off as a success but we have to have at least 20 pilots to make it work. That said, any current Level 5 pilot gets free entry, all others, $20 for the entire weekend of slope and/or thermal contest flying. Banquet tickets are $10. The weekend will be inexpensive as lodging is available for as little as $25 a night. The town of Lucas is a quaint small Midwestern town and they enjoy and appreciate having modelers in their town. [RCSE] Re: new batteries
If Toshiba can produce these in quantity for reasonable prices - this will be a dramatic change in the way battery power is used. It would make electric vehicles much more practical - since 300+ mi Li-ion cars are already reasonable from the standpoint of range and weight - the last issue is charging speed. I could stand a 10-15m wait to fill up a car. Or added as extra storage in your Prius+ hybrid - store power from your PV array, and get a few gals of gas a day for free (takes about 8kwh to get the equivalent of a gal of gas, you get an average of 4.5hrs of averaged peak power per day for a year here in CA - more in summer, less in winter, but it averages to that). Of course price will be the biggest issue - they'll be more expensive than Li-ion/polymers at first. You'd also think if they can be charged that fast, they could DISCHARGE that fast, too. (And don't forget that there are a few more channels available -- 27 mHz, 50 mHz, 53 mHz, 49 mHz if you're really deseperate, 900 mHz, 2.4 gHz, 5.8 gHz if you don't mind violating AMA rules and using non-standard equipment ...) [ I'm talking US here, of course. ] Of course, it _would_ require magic to get these channels allocated. Or a lot of money -- the FCC does seem willing to sell spectrum for money. | Of course there would be a bias at the beginning, but once usage came to be | spread out evenly and randomly among those 100 channels, how many people | could then show up at a field before probability favored a conflict? | | Before working it out, take a guess at what the new answer will be. You might | be surprised. ... or might not. It's still the birthday paradox, it's just that the numbers have changed. In fact, since the birthday paradox is based on 365 `channels', the answer has gotten even closer to what people are used to seeing. Also, note that what you're figuring out is the odds for _anybody_ to have a conflict. Assuming that everybody only has one channel, the odds of _you_ having a conflict with somebody else are approximately (the number of other people) / (50 {the number of channels available}.) (It's approximately because we ignore the possibility of multiple other people sharing a frequency. This approximation starts to fall apart as the number of people grows and approaches 50.) The odds of you personally having a conflict are a lot smaller. And even having a conflict isn't the end of the world. Quite often, people have different planes on different channels, or can change modules and crystals. (I certainly never go out to the flying field with only one plane. What if I break it?) And if it does turn out that you're sharing a frequency with somebody else, it just means that you get to watch half the time. I learn as much by watching other people fly as I do by flying myself ... The local soaring club's leadership doesn't really like me because I pointed out that their idea of `owned frequencies' really wasn't fair (leadership got first dibs), and limited the club's size to 50 members. But fair or not, it does bring the odds of a conflict down to almost zero. And even at the power club that I'm a member of, while there are no `owned' frequencies, there is a frequency list. I almost never have conflicts when I fly at that field, even if there's 30+ people out there for a contest.
