[RCSE] Fresno Classic?

this a few times and have fond memories of the experience. Other members of

Re: [RCSE] Compile: What do you have in your toolbox?

2005-04-07 Thread Chuck Anderson
I have three tool boxes depending on where I am flying.
1. Local flying at the Airfoilers model field.
A cardboard coke flat notched to fit the fuselage containing a roll of wing
tape and a pair of scissors. If I need more, I run home to do the work.

2. Contest where I travel on the airlines.
A canvas tool pouch I bought from the original Bag Lady at Visalia many
years ago containing a screw driver, Phillips screw driver, ball driver
for 4-40 socket head cap screws, tow hook wrench, scissors, Xacto knife,
small needle nose pliers, small pair of dikes, and a stopwatch. Tool
pouch, Smart Charge, and wing tape are carried in the archery bow case that
I used to ship the model as checked luggage. Don't fly to contest any more
because of the Terminal Stupid Asses.

3. Contests that I travel to in my van.
A tool box with the usual assortment of tools and emergency supplies,
spare model, spare transmitter, and a Smart Charge permantly mounted in the
van.

Yes. The figure of 99.58% given by Charles Frey is correct. More precisely,
it's about 99.5815978%.

Doug McLaren's figure of 51% for nine people is also off. The correct figure
is about 53.4504048%. The answer of nine people is correct though, since the
probability for eight people is about 44.5838152%.

On every single frequency board, a simple bit of velcro and anyone walking
up to get a pin or put their card in a slot will be able to see what's hot and
what's not.

No more fake representations of which freqs are active. You'll walk up and
see which of all 50 freqs are modulat'n.

At $50 each I suspect every RC modeler in the USA will own their own
too.

Module knobs be damned :-)

Okay so I couldn't go to Toledo without buying something and FMA had this
little walmart type toy cessna electric RTF. It is unique in that it uses a
tail rotor built into the rudder for yaw, instead of using a rudder. The box
is its' carry/protective case. You could mail it in the box safely.
It comes completely ready to fly, except for 6 AA batteries for the
TX/Charger. Yep the Tx is the plane's charger. You simply pull the battery out of
the bottom hatch in the plane, and plug it into the charging socket in the TX.
The battery has a mood dot (thermal sensitive color changing dot) which
tells you that the battery is charged...but you can tell just as well by felling
the heat build...and it gets really warm when it is charged.
Anyway, you cut some trim tabs lose on the rudder, ailerons an elevator
locations. Then give it a toss motor off to check that it is flying VERY
straight and flat If it curves, you will have a challenge keeping it on the field
Flying it is a ball, it flys really well and climbs out pretty well
specially when it hits a thermal. The way it is set up, the motor on causes it to
climb, plenty of up thrust. It climbs, stalls and climbs again. Using the tail
rotor is a trick to get it to come around, but it does work. I found that
pulsing it provides more force.
Did I mention its a lot of fun? It is a Park Flyer only in size, it is not
something you would attempt to fly indoors or in an area where there are a
lot of trees bordering the perimeter.
It is durable, cuz I bopped it in a few times. Wind is not its friend...so
calm weather or light breezes is best.
Fun stuff

I'm hoping the Cylons will provide something that not only scans the field, but sorts the frequencies and switches your tranny and receiver to what is available. If they are all being used, it will disable your transmitter and not allow it to be turned on. All knob twiddling will be completely transparent. If they can't at least do that, then I say we turn up the Slim Whitman and melt their heads like in Mars Attacks...

In the meantime, we have to get some actual soaring done and that

I sent my son's tennis racket to him in Denver and figured I'd get it
restrung, get some grips for it and while I was at it, some head abrasion
tapeand that's where I found Gamma Brand Dura Guard.

it is a clear sticking tape . It has very little stretch and did I mention
it is sticky :) 1 1/8" wide and 30' long. In the tennis string and
grip section.

I could see this as a definite must have for guys still using round bent
joiner two piece or three piece wings. Should help limit wing twist on landings.
I doubt it will fracture like most tapes.

Got it at DICKS Sporting Goods.

[RCSE] Shadow 3's are flying!

2005-04-07 Thread GordySoar

I have gotten emails from guys who got the new Shadow 3's and they say they
are working!

Always good news when it is about a brand new introduction...of anything
:-)

I saw guys at Toledo with their new thin, tiny Shadow 3's in their back
pockets..substantial backpockets.

I could just imagine surface mount parts popping off like fleas! ;-(

I can't wait for the gremlins to show up on these things...it will give the
RCSE naysayers fodder for posting and will keep them away from the flying fields
with their oh so difficult to see synth module dials :-)

Seriously though, looks like itsa great start for the
Shadow3's. Each one is tested with a Tx and Servo situation before going
in the package. I think it was Aroosh who mentioned that after all the
science stuff was done (mechanicals like cold and hot and vibration) they took
the ones they sent me and threw them on the ground a few time really hard ( I
was wondering how the shrink tubing got scuffed!) to see if some circuit would
open or something would break off. Good thing they are whimpy Canadian
boys :-)

Mine is in my Kennedy Composites Blaster DLG and I had a chance to fly it
Monday on a sod farm for about 20 tosses...and bumps. So far it works

[RCSE] LSF Achievement Weekend Update

2005-04-07 Thread George Voss

Less than 6 weeks remain
until the Wilson Lake KS LSF Achievement Weekend. Ive had a large number of inquiries about the event, but
the current sign-up list is surprisingly small. This will be the perfect weekend for those of us in the
Midwest to get our 2, 4, and 8-hour slope flights to add to or complete our LSF
Level 3, 4, or 5. We have a
contingent plan if the wind doesnt blow, and that would be thermal
contests. The goal is to have at
least 20 pilots so the Level 4 and 5 pilots can gain valuable points. The thermal tasks will be multiple during
the weekend so we can maximize points gain. Those who complete their Level 4 and 5 tasks will be honored
at the Saturday night banquet. There is a local PO to date your application mailing so those
finishing one level can get started on the next level. All in all, it looks to be a great
time.

We are limiting entry to one person per frequency. So far, the available frequencies are everything
except 12 and 45. Id really like
to see this weekend come off as a success but we have to have at least 20
pilots to make it work. That said,
any current Level 5 pilot gets free entry, all others, $20 for the entire
weekend of slope and/or thermal contest flying. Banquet tickets are $10.

The weekend will be inexpensive as lodging is available for
as little as $25 a night. The town
of Lucas is a quaint small Midwestern town and they enjoy and appreciate having
modelers in their town.

Guess again. Now that we've established that with 50 channels, only eight
people can show up before there's a better than 50:50 chance of a frequency
conflict, let's imagine how it would be if we got awarded 50 more R/C
aircraft channels for a total of 100.

Of course there would be a bias at the beginning, but once usage came to be
spread out evenly and randomly among those 100 channels, how many people
could then show up at a field before probability favored a conflict?

Before working it out, take a guess at what the new answer will be. You might
be surprised.

club members were very personable and pleasant. You were even pleasant
while reaming me for flying to close to the winch lines Impound was
prompt and accurate, getting the equipment in and out in a timely
fashion. I'm not sure how you arranged such challenging weather
conditions, but that was pretty cool too. I will definitely be back next
year with a few more team members.

Well run contest and a ton of relaxed fun
 Thank you

[RCSE] Re: new batteries

2005-04-07 Thread Tom Rust
If Toshiba can produce these in quantity for reasonable prices - this
will be a dramatic change in the way battery power is used. It would
make electric vehicles much more practical - since 300+ mi Li-ion cars
are already reasonable from the standpoint of range and weight - the
last issue is charging speed. I could stand a 10-15m wait to fill up a car.

Or added as extra storage in your Prius+ hybrid - store power from your
PV array, and get a few gals of gas a day for free (takes about 8kwh to
get the equivalent of a gal of gas, you get an average of 4.5hrs of
averaged peak power per day for a year here in CA - more in summer, less
in winter, but it averages to that).

Of course price will be the biggest issue - they'll be more expensive
than Li-ion/polymers at first.

You'd also think if they can be charged that fast, they could DISCHARGE
that fast, too. Lets see, 150A into my little 3D aerobat with a 3 oz
battery, thats 2hp...

[RCSE] NSP Omega HLG construction...

2005-04-07 Thread Greg Stewart
Does anyone know what the construction of the leading edge/center section of
this older non-DLG HLG from Northeast Sailplanes? It looks and feels like
composite over foam... I want to adapt it to a different fuse, so want to
remove the existing wing holddown rods at the LE and put in a couple of
additional front holddown bolts... it'll be easier knowing what's under
there.

TIA!

Greg in Minneapolis

So, perhaps 13?

No, 12. I caught you with a subtle difference in wording.

I'll let the matter rest now, but isn't it amazing that doubling the number
of channels from 50 to 100 only increases the answer to the puzzle by 5?

Hmm ...

| Still, it's time for the thread to die.

What is it with people taking private emails and replying to them to
the list? Guys, it's rude to reply to a private email and CC a
mailing list like this. If I reply to you directly, it's because I
don't think something is worth sending to the list, or shouldn't be
sent to the list. (And this topic is not really very soaring related,
so I didn't want to perpetuate it.)

| Guess again. Now that we've established that with 50 channels, only
| eight people can show up before there's a better than 50:50 chance
| of a frequency conflict, let's imagine how it would be if we got
| awarded 50 more R/C aircraft channels for a total of 100.

If we are magically awarded 50 more R/C channels, I would hope that
they would be allocated ONLY for spread spectrum R/C use. And we
don't really need 50 more channels under the current system anyways --
how often do you see 50+ airplanes in the air _at once_? (Perhaps
once in a while at a slope or something.) More channels would reduce
the odds of conflicts, but wouldn't make the problem of frequnecy
control go away. (And don't forget that there are a few more channels
available -- 27 mHz, 50 mHz, 53 mHz, 49 mHz if you're really
deseperate, 900 mHz, 2.4 gHz, 5.8 gHz if you don't mind violating AMA
rules and using non-standard equipment ...) [ I'm talking US here, of
course. ]

Of course, it _would_ require magic to get these channels allocated.
Or a lot of money -- the FCC does seem willing to sell spectrum for
money.

| Of course there would be a bias at the beginning, but once usage came to be
| spread out evenly and randomly among those 100 channels, how many people
| could then show up at a field before probability favored a conflict?
|
| Before working it out, take a guess at what the new answer will be. You might
| be surprised.

... or might not. It's still the birthday paradox, it's just that the
numbers have changed. In fact, since the birthday paradox is based on
365 `channels', the answer has gotten even closer to what people are
used to seeing.

Also, note that what you're figuring out is the odds for _anybody_ to
have a conflict. Assuming that everybody only has one channel, the
odds of _you_ having a conflict with somebody else are approximately
(the number of other people) / (50 {the number of channels
available}.) (It's approximately because we ignore the possibility of
multiple other people sharing a frequency. This approximation starts
to fall apart as the number of people grows and approaches 50.)

The odds of you personally having a conflict are a lot smaller. And
even having a conflict isn't the end of the world. Quite often,
people have different planes on different channels, or can change
modules and crystals. (I certainly never go out to the flying field
with only one plane. What if I break it?) And if it does turn out
that you're sharing a frequency with somebody else, it just means that
you get to watch half the time. I learn as much by watching other
people fly as I do by flying myself ...

The local soaring club's leadership doesn't really like me because I
pointed out that their idea of `owned frequencies' really wasn't fair
(leadership got first dibs), and limited the club's size to 50
members. But fair or not, it does bring the odds of a conflict down
to almost zero. And even at the power club that I'm a member of,
while there are no `owned' frequencies, there is a frequency list. I
almost never have conflicts when I fly at that field, even if there's
30+ people out there for a contest. Frequencies are *not* random.
