I donated $250, Gordy, did you have to skim a little off the top to pay

Help bring JoJo to Nats, it will be fun to meet him personally, fly
everything that we can, and share the Nats experience with him. His
perspective, photography and write up of it will be an interesting point
 of
view when it is all said and done. If you haven't seen his web site

Re: [RCSE] Best place to purchase Volz servos?

2005-04-12 Thread Jim Laurel
Well, it's still on the bench, so haven't flown it yet! But I'll
report to the exchange when I do. The quality of construction is
certainly outstanding. It seems very well thought out and
straightforward.

The only dilemma I'm running into on the Tragi is wing servo
installation. I have some DS368s, and had intended to install them
with the Greening servo frames. However, the cutouts are shaped in
such a way that I would never be able to access the servo frame screw
for removal anyway, so that leaves me with gluing the servos in place.
The servo cutouts seem to be tailor made for the Volz Wing Maxx servo
and it looks those would fit perfectly with the CNC mounts and leave
all the screws accessible.

On the Pike, the cutouts are such that the servos will fit fine and
leave plenty of access to the screws on the Greening mount, but the
Greening mount raises the servo just enough that it will cause a bulge
in the servo cover. It's not a huge issue and not likely to affect
flight performance in any measurable way. But I'm trying to do the
best job I can both functionally and cosmetically.

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'd like to hear the
latest wisdom on gluing vs installing servos with mounts. Also, the
DS368 vs Wing Maxx HP for flaps and ailerons in big moldies. Gordy
suggested MIcroMaxx HPs, which have a bit more torque than the DS368,
but I suspect that, with the mounts, I'm going to have the same issues
with getting to the mount screws. So, I wonder if it's worth the extra
expense of going to the Volz.

Gordy: any particular reason you suggested the Micro Maxx X servos
rather than the Wing Maxx? Is it just a torque issue?

I drew the box design out on a 4x8 sheet of coroplast. I cut the solid
lines all the way through with a razor. I cut the dotted lines through
the first layer on the inside of the bend to make them easier to bend.
When all the cutting was done I found some sho-goo at wally world to hold
it all together. Used stick on velco to hold the lid closed.

[RCSE] Plane came down.

2005-04-12 Thread Bill Swingle
Today, my plane fell from the tree. It had been in that tree since August.

It survived 40MPH winds; several blizzards and a couple heavy rains. The
Receiver and Servos survived fine. The speed control appears to be fine also
but the motor and gear box haven't yet been found so I haven't tested it
yet.

Surprisingly, the LiPoly battery seems to fine! It's holding firm at 3.75v
per cell. But I've not put a real load on it yet so I'll find out them. But
I'm real surprised that it's doing even this good because the battery was
left ON for 8 months!

I did loose my baseloaded shorty antenna. But all and all, I can't complain.

[RCSE] Shadow Receiver Test

2005-04-12 Thread Jim Monaco
Well, the foot of snow we had on Sunday is gone, the flying field is dry and
the temp was about 60, so it was a good day to get out at lunchtime and do some
tests.

My new Shadow 3 was put in my beater ICON and range tested. It showed slightly
better range than the hitec superslim that was in it before. All directions
were good so I launched and specked it out and no problems were observed.

My buddy Mike Verzuh came along and slammed his 57 module in and we were going
to see how in handled interference. We were very impressed. As long as I was
a few feet closer to the model, I had full control, as we got next to each
other the receiver would kick into failsafe.

I set the failsafe to 3/4 landing mode (flaps and elevator comp) and some left
rudder. I got some altitude and turned off the transmitter. There were no
glitches or wierdness - it simply put the flaps down and started a slow
circling descent. I let it run for about 30 seconds, then turned back on and
control was instantly back.

All in all very impressive for a PPM receiver.

OK, I just walked to my shop and put a load on the LiPoly battery (working
from home has it's advantages).

I turned the load on but as I walked back to my chair, it died. It lasted
only 1.5 minutes with a load that should have lasted 20min or more. I'll try
charging it again. But, it's looking like the common wisdom of never
completely discharging them is proving true.

Jim Bacus is right - it IS the daily driver, it was not purchased new and it
was not in pristine condition when I got it and I didn't pay anywhere near
the retail cost for it. It does still fly great though and I can get froggy
