Tilly is nice hat, I but I love my adventure hat from Sun Grubbies. It's really more like a sun helmut! Very light, dark brim underneath. [RCSE] Bill Malvey
Just wanted to take a minute to let you know that Bill Malvey underwent 6.5 hours of surgery to remove a growth from his brain today. He is in recovery and the prognosis looks great. The good news is they went in through his nasal passage so there is no major trauma. More tests will be performed tomorrow and we'll know more in the coming days. I'll be returning to the hospital tomorrow and will hopefully get to see him and will report back tomorrow. Bill will probably be upset that I posted this but I'm excited that everything went well. And, according to his wife, Bill was in his usual form talking away to the staff before going in to surgery. Sounds like they pushed the "night night" drugs a little early to get him quiet! Keep him in your thoughts this weekend. If you are flying dedicate a flight to him. Darwin N. Barrie Chandler AZ RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] IHLGF D-Day Minus One, The Clinic
About two thirds of the contestants showed up today for practice and for the DSL Clinic in the afternoon. The clinic was a big hit and ran from noon to 3:00 PM. The first half was a ground school with some top pilots talking about such mundane things as setup, launching, reading ground signs, ballast, landing and strategy. The second half of the ground school consisted of the field breaking up into four groups with the top pilots conducting demonstrations and a little personal tutoring for participants that brought their toys. With about 40+ aircraft all "up" at the same time it got a little crowded and put everybody's RX's to the supreme test. A few failed the test and we had some minor carnage. Lots of smiles on the field. Typical June Poway day. Overcast with light wind until about 11:00 AM. Clearing with a sea breeze about 8 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Lots of thermals moving fast downwind in the afternoon. Priceless Moment of the Day: Joe Wurts explaining "percentages" on being able to call air accurately while directing the demo pilot, into sink after explaining to the clinic the ground signs that pointed to that area as potential lift. Got a few chuckles... Then he was right three times in a row. Oh well... Day One starts tomorrow for Torrey Pines Gulls 12th annual IHLGF. If you are at all interested in HLG's, you really need to come down to Poway to watch. Pilots meeting at 08:30. First group goes up at 09:00. Re: [RCSE] Kill switch for winch
Under load, a spark of varying degree will definitely be generated depending on that load. The concern about it igniting the reactive materials is minimal. Lots if industrial circumstances utilize knife switches in this manner, on even larger systems. The act of opening should not be such that the result shorts the two poles, now this would be bad... I'm nearly certain that this wasn't what he was concerned about. I'm betting that the opening of the knife switch itself was the spark source he was speaking of. Guys, Please don't put knife switches on top of your batteries. When you really need to use them is the wrong time to make a nice big spark near the battery. Battery explosions are awful. If you want to be able to snap up the side, be sure you get the right Tilley. The one I use doesn't have the snaps. Without it, the brim on mine will flip up in a breeze. I actually _wore out_ my first one--and it was replaced cheerfully under warranty. Not too bad for a 10 year old hat! If you're in heavy wind, you can keep the front from flipping up by snapping up one side, like the stereotypical Aussie. That'll give it enough rigidity to hold steady in any wind. I originally got mine for sailing, so it has been thoroughly wind-tested. Get it a tad larger than you think you need--it should fit somewhat loosely. RE: [RCSE] The best soaring hat?
You're really kidding around.right? Or are you really that helpless? Try the largest Mexican Sombrero you can find the next time you fly. I'm sure you'll find it will fill all of your needs. Do cinch the chin strap down as tight as you can though. Now, on another note, which type of underwear do you prefer whilst sloping? Do you wear a different type whilst thermaling? Different for HLG? Boxers? Briefs? Jock Strap? Or maybe you prefer none at all? What brand? "Fruit of the Loom" immediately comes to my mind when I think of someone named George who would ask such silly questions. Get a clue, what ever works for you. Most likely you would look very stylish with a Pith Helmut, Khaki Bermuda Shorts, Tan knee high wool stockings with Penny Loafers on and of course a white long sleeved dress shirt with a polka dot Bowtie (your favorite choice of colors would be just fine). This of course would be for the thermal field. For sloping anything will be fine but the Sombrero is a must at the slope. Hope this helps, George. Cliff Lindgren PS Don't forget the extra-large lensed, horn-rimmed dark glasses to finish out your thermal flying ensemble. -Original Message- From: George Voss [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 11:12 PM To: '[RCSE]' Subject: [RCSE] The best soaring hat? [RCSE] A little solace for the thermal deprived crowd
Gee Bruce, out here in the industrial mid-west we have "Full Size" Planes with motors that will fit a model plane inside while you fly it cross country. You should do a search on NET. You would be suppressed what has been invented by some brother from Ohio. :) John -Original Message- From: Bruce Hobbs [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 10:40 AM To: 'John'; 'RCSE' Subject: RE: [RCSE] A little solace for the thermal deprived crowd If Jack can thermal his full scale sailplane from the Houston area to Ft. Re: [RCSE] Need wrecks
That's almost a Classic kit. Probably worth more than what you paid for it. With the dollar down like it is, someone in Europe might consider it a really good deal. T - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Tom Broeski" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 10:50 PM Subject: Re: [RCSE] Need wrecks This Discus kit with the spoiler cost me about $535 in 1987 and for anything less than that and I'll have to build this wreck myself. The kit I have is a much better kit than the ones Graupner has currently available. Thanks anyhow, Dave. NIB is not too much of a wreck. Unless you're just a wreck thinking about building it. The kits run about $280 plain or $360 with the wing built with spoilers installed. http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=422_222&products_id=12090 What do you want for it?
