Tilly is nice hat, I but I love my adventure hat from Sun Grubbies.
It's really more like a sun helmut!

Very light, dark brim underneath. Does just fine in the wind we
get lots of that in Texas.

T1 - best slope hat, T2 - most likely to get you sucked up in a

You're really kidding around.right? Or are you really that
helpless? Try the largest Mexican Sombrero you can find the next time you
fly. I'm sure you'll find it will fill all of your needs. Do cinch the
chin strap down as tight as you can though.

Now, on another note, which type of underwear do you prefer whilst
sloping? Do you wear a different type whilst thermaling? Different for
HLG? Boxers? Briefs? Jock Strap? Or maybe you prefer none at all? What
brand? "Fruit of the Loom" immediately comes to my mind when I think of
someone named George who would ask such silly questions.

Get a clue, what ever works for you. Most likely you would look
very stylish with a Pith Helmut, Khaki Bermuda Shorts, Tan knee high wool
stockings with Penny Loafers on and of course a white long sleeved dress
shirt with a polka dot Bowtie (your favorite choice of colors would be

just

fine). This of course would be for the thermal field. For sloping

anything

will be fine but the Sombrero is a must at the slope.

Hope this helps, George.

PS Don't forget the extra-large lensed, horn-rimmed dark glasses to finish
out your thermal flying ensemble.

I

like it for thermal flying but the brim is too soft to hold up in slope

[RCSE] Bill Malvey

2005-06-03 Thread ktlkrn
Just wanted to take a minute to let you know that Bill Malvey underwent 6.5
hours of surgery to remove a growth from his brain today. He is in recovery
and the prognosis looks great. The good news is they went in through his
nasal passage so there is no major trauma. More tests will be performed
tomorrow and we'll know more in the coming days. I'll be returning to the
hospital tomorrow and will hopefully get to see him and will report back
tomorrow.

Bill will probably be upset that I posted this but I'm excited that everything
went well. And, according to his wife, Bill was in his usual form talking away
to the staff before going in to surgery. Sounds like they pushed the "night
night" drugs a little early to get him quiet!

Keep him in your thoughts this weekend. If you are flying dedicate a flight to
him.

[RCSE] IHLGF D-Day Minus One, The Clinic

2005-06-03 Thread WARNER GARTH
About two thirds of the contestants showed up today for practice and for
the DSL Clinic in the afternoon. The clinic was a big hit and ran from
noon to 3:00 PM. The first half was a ground school with some top
pilots talking about such mundane things as setup, launching, reading
ground signs, ballast, landing and strategy. The second half of the
ground school consisted of the field breaking up into four groups with
the top pilots conducting demonstrations and a little personal tutoring
for participants that brought their toys. With about 40+ aircraft all
"up" at the same time it got a little crowded and put everybody's RX's
to the supreme test. A few failed the test and we had some minor
carnage.
Lots of smiles on the field. Typical June Poway day. Overcast with light
wind until about 11:00 AM. Clearing with a sea breeze about 8 to 10 mph
in the afternoon. Lots of thermals moving fast downwind in the
afternoon.

Priceless Moment of the Day: Joe Wurts explaining "percentages" on being
able to call air accurately while directing the demo pilot, into sink
after explaining to the clinic the ground signs that pointed to that
area as potential lift. Got a few chuckles... Then he was right three
times in a row. Oh well...

Day One starts tomorrow for Torrey Pines Gulls 12th annual IHLGF. If you
are at all interested in HLG's, you really need to come down to Poway to
watch. Pilots meeting at 08:30. First group goes up at 09:00.

[RCSE] Sloping in Montana

2005-06-03 Thread Joseph Hochadel
Vacation this year takes us to Big Sky, Montana, near
the northwest corner of Yellowstone Nat'l park. My
son and I would like to spend a day sloping if at all
possible. It would be great to hear from anyone with
local knowledge of slope sites in the area.

Thanks,
Joe H.

Very nice! I like that idea of a quick foot-operated kill switch.

You can now add a warning buzzer to go along with the LED circuit. It'll
automatically sound off if either of your solenoids gets stuck. My web page
has all the information you'll need to build one yourself, or you can get a
kit from Cal Posthuma. See the link below.

The switch should open away from the other teminal, naturally.

Ideally the knife switch should not be long enough to reach the other terminal.

Under load, a spark of varying degree will definitely be generated depending on
that load. The concern about it igniting the reactive materials is minimal.
Lots if industrial circumstances utilize knife switches in this manner, on even
larger systems.

The act of opening should not be such that the result shorts the two poles, now
this would be bad...

I'm nearly certain that this wasn't what he was concerned about.

I'm betting that the opening of the knife switch itself was the spark source

I also wonder if this is a real concern. What are the odds of any hydrogen
being generated during use? I thought it was only generated during
charging...

Please don't put knife switches on top of your batteries.
When you really need to use them is the wrong time to make a nice big spark

If you want to be able to snap up the side, be sure you get the right

Here's another vote for the Tilley. I actually _wore out_ my first
one--and it was replaced cheerfully under warranty. Not too bad for a
10 year old hat!

If you're in heavy wind, you can keep the front from flipping up by
snapping up one side, like the stereotypical Aussie. That'll give it
enough rigidity to hold steady in any wind. I originally got mine for
sailing, so it has been thoroughly wind-tested.

Get it a tad larger than you think you need--it should fit somewhat
loosely. You can use one of the two straps to make it fit more snugly
when the wind comes up.

I personally favor the Tilley T4, which is very comfortable, and has a
big brim that extends well over the neck for protection. It also has a
good strap to keep it on your head in windy conditions. A very durable
and well-made product from our friends in Canada!

I know this will start a huge discussion, but what is the best hat for both
slope and thermal flying? I currently use a Chi Chi Rodriguez cane hat.
I

like it for thermal flying but the brim is too soft to hold up in slope
lift. That, and it doesn't have a chin string/strap and blows off in
strong
slope lift. Baseball hats don't protect the ears or neck. Opinions

anything less than that and I'll have to build this wreck myself.

The kit I have is a much better kit than the ones Graupner has currently

The kits run about $280 plain or $360 with the wing built with spoilers

I know this will start a huge discussion, but what is the best hat for
both
slope and thermal flying? I currently use a Chi Chi Rodriguez cane
hat. I

like it for thermal flying but the brim is too soft to hold up in slope
lift. That, and it doesn't have a chin string/strap and blows off in
strong
slope lift. Baseball hats don't protect the ears or neck. Opinions
please.
