[RCSE] leaving list

2005-10-09 Thread John Derstine

Not a bad thing I am sure to the few detractors I have
accumulated here. But I would like to thank Mike Lachowski for his contribution
along with MAN for getting this first of its kind
forum started years ago when no others existed. I have been along for the ride
for 7-8 years best I can recollect. Lots of good discussion and lots of garbage.
Nothing more and nothing less than any email list I have experienced.

I remember the guy who challenged Joe Wurts to a MOM
contest, can’t remember the name, but he was a classic spammer, and no
one got it. He had a way of generating lots of reactionary posts which on
occasion clogged the server. I also remember with sadness Martin Simons being
driven off by uninformed critics who had no idea of the worth and wealth of
information he had to offer. I also recall the many informative technical posts
and discussions over the years from the likes of Don Stackhouse, Martin S.,
Mark Drela, Simon V., Bob Dodgson, and my hero Harley Michaelis.

There are now too many other option for my particular niche
and soaring in general available on the web as full featured forums with photo
capability etc. Everyone on this list is also on the others for the most part,
so it is redundant to be a member here. I get so many emails as it is, I can’t
justify receiving the plethora of mostly personal notes and back and forth
banter now prevalent here. I can check it out on RC groups if needed.

Thanks and see you at the flying field, scale flying that
is.

2005-10-09 Thread S Meyer

John, You yourself have been a great contributor to RCSE.  I will
miss your posts that add knowledge to this list.
Reading mail from RCSE is like standing in a large room over hearing all
the different conversations going on.  The "Soaring
Headlines" are posted here, from all facets.  I understand the
desire to be able to focus down to one discipline and the ability to be
more selective with Soaring topics.  But I believe this is just
removing some of the diversity of information available on RCSE.
Where else can you catch posts from the all the fore mentioned
"experts"?  I would not know about John Derstine and
Endless Mountain Models unless reading your posts here.  Which then
of course leads to meeting you in person at the NATS.  Reading posts
on RCSE is much like chaffing the wheat identifying what is good and what
is banter.  But both are present in normal conversations, so I keep
my messages sorted by subject and the DELETE key get's a
workout.

Controversy and divergent opinions are good things. If everybody agrees,
nothing will change and improve.

More and more everyone now has access to forums, email lists, etc. One of
consequences of universal access is that the quality content to BS ratio on
forums like RCSE makes it difficult to sort through BS in a reasonable
amount of time.

So, here's an admonishment, think before sending the personal notes and
participating the back and forth banter. This would apply not only to RCSE,
but to all forums like RC Groups. If RCSE and other forums continue down the
current path, the people we want to hear from, like John Derstine and our
other favorites, may very well stop participating, because it takes too much
time and energy to sort through the BS.

I'm not suggesting that we don't participate in the threads of others.
Everyone likes to hear a positive reply post saying that a contribution was
particularly good or helpful. And, when you see things differently, you
should speak up. However, here's another admonishment, let's be nice to each
other... even when the other guy is wrong. Someday we might find ourselves
the other guy, and we might have something to learn.

Please excuse my rant...

Jay Decker

[RCSE] Pumpkins are a'comin'

2005-10-09 Thread Barry Andersen
Gentlemen, in only 5 days the Great Hallowed Pumpkin Fly will be upon
us.

Come fly at the Voice of America Park in West Chester Ohio, just
north of Cincinnati.

Two one day contests, Saturday October 15, Sunday October 16th.

Wide open space, 6 McCann winches, I backup and seeded man on man
competition to end the midwest contest season.

Straight tape L4 landing tasks, no silly landing business.

Turkey shoot in the final round. The winner of each flight group
gets the bird (so to speak)

If the ten day weather forecast can be believed, we are in for 72
degrees and sun.

Of course the DFL (dead ... last) trophy is worth the trip alone.
For those on the other end, nice AMA produced trophies for places 1-5
each day.

See: www.cincinnatisoaring.org for directions, and lodging.

Questions?

[RCSE] Frickey wins TNT '05

2005-10-09 Thread Mark Williams
After two days of very challenging air, Jim Frickey wins the TNT for the
third time! During these days no pilot remained unscathed, and some more
than once were bit.

Conditions ranged from scattered showers on Saturday morning and temps in
the low 50's to temps near 80 and booming lift on Sunday. But, where there
is lift there is also equal sink which hurt many a good stick.

Congratulations Jim well earned.

[RCSE] RC and airports

2005-10-09 Thread Daryl Perkins
Has anyone ever flown into Deer Valley? The base leg
is over or behind a small hill. This hill could be
perfect for slope soaring... if any idiot is dumb
enough to soar that close to an airport

OK... so I'm turning base to final in my 421. Had to
cut it a little short as there was another twin
outside me for 25 Left. That put me right on top of
the hill. The wind was howling, almost 20 kts straight
cross. Nice day for slopin' The unmistakeable
outline of a flying wing foam POS flashes in front of
me. Maybe 50 ft. below me, and 30 yards in front of
me he was pushing hard, I believe in an effort to
get out of my way.

Do you people have any [EMAIL PROTECTED] idea how much damage
a foam wing can do to my aircraft? No... it's not just
gonna bounce offThere are real people sitting in
these full scale crafts guys! I've often complained
about these foam things trying to take out my glass
ships... now they're trying to take out real planes
too???

Sorry to take this out on the exchange... but I'm
pissed. Being a RC guy... I didn't report this guy to
the tower. But if any of you know who might be sloping
near the Deer Valley airport, could you kindly ask him
to stop? It's a dumb place to fly... There are slopes
all over that valley.

Let's use some common sense guys

Sorry for the rant... when did I turn into my grumpy
grandfather???

[RCSE] Thanks SLNT for another great TNT

2005-10-09 Thread Hilaunch

Once again the Soaring League of North Texas hosted a great three days of sailplane flying.  The weather was almost under control, with a few sprinkles on Friday and Saturday morning, but good lift on all three days.

I was an excellent opportunity to renew old acquaintances and make many new ones. The Chicago guys were missed, but their absence was understood.

Congratulations to Jim Fricky for his third win which places him in a small elite group of only three or four others over the last twenty years.  Good flying!

I did not write down the scores, they will be available on the SLNT web site soon.

Thanks again SLNT I will be there next year.

[RCSE] Subject: RC and airports

2005-10-09 Thread MSu1049321
You were right to mention it to us in the community. Hopefully the word will
get spread thru the local hobby shops and clubs in that area, and we won't
have to see alarmist articles in local media, leading to government shut-downs
of
flying sites for everyone... even those who play by the rules in safe areas.

I suspect this guy is a lone wolf type, might take a while to track him down
and explain it to him in words he can understand.

A full-scale plane is never more in danger than just after wheels up and just
before landing. The pilot 's attention is dominated by the task of flying the
approach or the take-off, you can't count on him spotting a small model in
time at a closure rate of as much as a hundred miles an hour. Much less count
on
him being able to evade without maybe causing a tip stall and crash. WITH
PEOPLE ON BOARD!!! Even a foamy wing, hit by a plane going about 70-100 MPH,
might penetrate a window, cause prop damage, get ingested into a turbine inlet,
foul a control surface bird strikes are serious as a heart attack, this is
no different except the bird's brain is theoretically smaller than the RC
pilot's .What human being, aware of these facts, would callously continue
his
selfish activity in such a danger zone? We have that AMA-recommended no-fly
zone around airports for many reasons, first of all to save lives. The fact you
haven't hurt anybody yet is no excuse to keep taking the risk.

And who the bleep are YOU, mystery model flyer, to expose other people to
risk against their will and knowledge? If I saw you doing this, I'd not only
shoot your model down, I'd give you a tune-up using your TX against your noggin.
One stupid moron being selfish always ruins it for everybody else.
