[RCSE] World Soaring Masters and Jo G.

2006-05-01 Thread GordySoar

Gordy, any truth to the rumor that you have sold your
Pikes so you can sponser Jo's trip, housing and all his required liquid
refreshment ? If true, does that mean you will fly your new Super Ava ?
I suppose that could also mean no sun in Muncie that weekend.

Hi Dave!
I have this weekend's Extreme F5J comp won before I get there,
when you add up the rules, write them all down vertically and then read them
sideways, it turns out there is a loop hole that will make my easily
victorious.

I just got into my motel room in MN and have started installing
the speed 400 system from my MPX Easy Glider into the Super AVA...as a
pusher!

After working on the calculations with mega math/science brains
like Drela, Kiesling, Wurts, and Steve Neu...it turns out that the suction
created by the 400's 7" blade on 7 cells, pulling air over the Super's giant
wing will cause it to just go up vertically,,,and here's the good part, it will
do it right over the landing spot, so no need to go flying around looking for
stuff or getting a stiff neck looking up.  Yep it will just launch, shoot
over to the landing spot and wait for the clock to burn down.

Its gonna be ugly :-)

And yes I did sell my Superior, Giant and Organic...so all I
have left is Giant, Superior, Perfect, Carbon Supra's and Super AVA.

G'nite

[RCSE] "Thinking about the World Chompionships of Soaring Masters"

2006-05-01 Thread GordySoar

Today I hit airline limbo when I got to Louisville Airport to catch a short
hop thru Chicago to Minne.

After scrambling to get my F5J Sp400 Pulsar 2005 and my Pike Perfect loaded
into my Sportube for battle this coming weekend in Munciethe steak I had on
the BBQ was done to perfection.

butI realized that I had less than an hour to get to the airport and ON
the planeyipes.

So the steak went into the refrig, and the Catahoulas will be eating big
tonite...well that's what I was thinking then.

The steak part came true, and I got the planes packed carefully too, and I
made it to the gate on timeto find out the flight was delayed because of
back ups in Chicago...likely Bacus his one of twenty Icons circling up high
slowing down flights.

So now instead of landing in MN at 6pm, now it will be closer to
midnite.

And instead of trucking my way back toward Louisville via a Kenosha beach
and Arlington Park Race Track, I may be heading directly south to Kansas City
for some demonstrations on some golf courses under construction.  Damn the
gods of change :-)

In any case my first carbon Supra #666 is booking its own way in a Sportube
via Fedex toward Louisvilleyup it has some Volz blue on it and in it
tooso that's a good thing I think.

Just got a call from one of the Catahoulas, thanking me for the steak, well
it was more like bark, bark, bark, woof -- but you have to give them some poetic
license for being able to dial the phone.

Tomorrow my entry form will be over filling Jim McCarthy's mail box(I
stuffed the envelope with bubble wrap so everyone else's forms would be pushed
out of the box)

Officially the first to arrive...proudly marked with LSF
4 (likely I'll do my 8 hour along side Chuck
someday ;-)

On the topic of what its called, personally I think it should be
called a Soaring event...

I hear that Picolario is swamped with tune ups from all the Euro's planning
on attending :-)

Weather is iffy at best for every event this weekend in the Midwest.
Eastern Iowa has stormy weather master Rich Burnowski and likely his trusty side
kick Carl.  Louisville has the Derby this weekend, and the soaring club has
an after Derby F5J Sp400 event.

Oops they're calling me to the winch...

[RCSE] Soaring at AMA this weekend

2006-05-01 Thread gregprater
Everyone is welcome to come to Muncie this weekend.MIST club is sponsoring a
HLG/f5eXtreme contest on saturday followed by a 2meter/ Unlimited man on man
battle with L.O.F.T. on Sunday.
Pilots meeting at 9:30 both days.

f5eXtreme rules are:X5J EXTREME 2006

X5J eXtreme Rules:

1. Any electric sailplane can be entered, to fly the following: three 10-minute
flight windows. One point is awarded for each second of flight time, powered or
non-powered. One point is deducted for each second over the 10minute-flight
window. A flight begins upon the powered release of the electric sailplane and
ends on the contact with any stationary surface. Maximum points possible 600.
All fractional seconds are rounded to the closest second.

2. The total accumulated motor run time is unlimited but subtracted from the
flight time. Example, 600 flight pts - 19 calculated motor run pts = 581 total
round pts. Calculated motor run time will be rounded to the closest 1/10th of a
second.

3. Landing points to be measured from the center of the landing circle, to the
closest part of the plane.

0-1m 30pts <1-2m 27pts <2-3m 24pts <3-4rm 21pts <4-5m 18pts
<5-6m 15pts <6-7m 12pts <7-8m 09pts <8-9m 06pts <9-10m 03pts
<10m 00pts

4. Motor handicap: brushless 95%, brushed Cobalt 75%, Ferrite 45%, and Speed400
30%. Actual motor run rounded to the closest second. Then multiplied by the
motor percentage. Round this calculated value to the closest 1/10th of a second.

5. Any type of battery cell is legal.

6. Man on Man competition. Not Seeded.

7. The pilot may use unlimited motor runs, however, upon the second start of
the
motor he may not count his landing points. (Contest directors choice for
applying this rule.)

The following are scoring guide lines:

A. Timers still need two stopwatches. One for the flight window of 10minutes
and a second for total accumulated motor run.
B. Flight time - round to closest second
C. Motor run - round to closest second
D. Calculated motor run - round to closest 1/10th of a second

Uhh? Yes.

Fact: Compared to just about every other RC discipline $2000-$3000 is not a
large cash outlay to compete.

I do know this.

Did ya hear that Malvey? I will be telling you, then I will have

I WILL BE THERE!
So will also other guys from Europe I hear!

Today I got a good message from Barry Kennedy that he is there for me and
will help me out on this event. I think we will stay Roberts Radisson
according to Barry.
And "offcourse" my friend Gordy is that real friend that he showed last
year. He will be there helping me carry those huge containers of planes... I
think he will train those dogs into the Iditarot race for Muncie instead of
Alaska.
Even Marc Gellart have offered some help. He was a nice spotter last time so
who knows...

I have now ordered "non refundable" tickets! So no matter what the stamp
says I will be there on the field atleast!
Looking forward to meet all my friends and eat a couple rib racks each day
(my weight went down last time so Gordy's diet works..)

[RCSE] A question to the Soaring Championship Organizers

For those of us not fortunate (???) enough to live within a reasonable distance of Muncie, when will entry confirmation go out?  Travel arrangements are already tough to make, and I don't plan to make mine until I know I'm in.  Are you making any arrangements with the local hotels for good rates such as the NATS does?   Thanks.

RE: [RCSE] "World" Championships - We Americans must be the best...

2006-05-01 Thread John Diniz
D,

I agree.

But
The World Soaring Masters was not meant to be a World "Championship". The use
of "World" in the name is meant to make it an invitation to the world's soaring
pilots to come and compete. We do have many pilots from around the world that
will be coming to compete against everyone.

Making a world championship team is as you know probably the most challenging
thing one could ever hope to do. If I lived in one of those 20+ countries that
competes for world titles I would never get the chance to compete against the
likes of you, JW, LJ, Mr. Kiesling, Mr. Smith and all the other guy's here in
the US. But I happen to be in the US and have learned so much from
watching/talking to you guy's that it has made me a MUCH better pilot then just
a year ago. This is a chance for them to come and compete with you guys and see
where their skills are at. Also a chance for those of us in the US to compete
against some of the best International pilots around. Look at what Jojo did at
the Nat's last year. Not bad for a guy from Norway! Jim McCarthy will have to
confirm, but I think Phillip Kolb and many of the other top F3J pilots from
Europe will be coming to compete at the Soaring Masters, so this will be a
"World" event.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

BTW, Goldsmith came up with the name - blame the Aussie!!!

2006-05-01 Thread GordySoar

Gordy, I believe postmark time is not the bottom line,
when it gets to McCarthy is the bottomn line. Check me out on this.

Hi Dave,

If you check sub paragraph 1.4, on page 9 of the rules
posted on the Masters website, you see in very fine print that all entries
received on the same day will be sorted in this order

"those entries with time stamps will be sorted
according to the time stamps, and those with out will be sorted in the order the
postman stacked them in Jim's mail box...priority beginning with those on the
bottom of the stack...in the event that Jim has had too many beers and drops the
pile, the date stamped envelops will still have priority, but the non-date
stamped pile will be put into a giant tumbler, spun for exactly 11 minutes and
the drum stopped with the opening exactly at the 10o'clock position.  The

[RCSE] WNY Soaring Contest

2006-05-01 Thread Sheldon-YNT uDesign

Thanks to Tom
Koszuta and all of the Western New York Soaring and Electric Flyers for inviting
Reece and I to attend their contest yesterday. It's the first time I've flown
UNL in about 18 months and boy does it show! I had a great day, met a lot of
good people and will definitely be back for more contests this season. Special
thanks to Reece for all his patience & help, talking me through some tough
times, and reminding me to "breathe" !

The contest was a
very relaxed affair, with 10 pilots in attendance. We had 1 open winch and
a 40 minute window for each of the 5 rounds. The field is "interesting" as there
a quite a few thermal generators surrounding the field, and along with thermal
generators comes sink holes! Landings were a big problem for me, as usual,
although I did get 1 of my LSF II landings. Unfortunately my
1 off-field landing cost me 2nd place and I finished in 6th. I had to jump
trees twice...once I was unlucky (and almost took out Reece's Artemis which was
on the ground underneath the tree) but the other time the Sapphire looked like a
jack-in-the-box popping up over the trees not once but twice. I did have the
tallest flight of the day and if it hadn't been for Reece's eyes, I don't think
that plane would have come home.

I had some good
flights, really poor landings, but my equipment came away still able to fly, and
I had fun and came away with a lot more knowledge. Good time, good experience,
good people...What more could I ask for?
