Re: [RCSE] Re: Solenoid Failure

2007-12-13 Thread Jeff Steifel
Mass failures happen when someone over tightens the lugs on the
solenoid. They do it for all thinking the tightest connection is the way
to go.
What happens is the contact twists, and then instead of transferring the
whole load only a portion of the load is transfered creating a weld.
Take apart the solenoid and you'll see what I am talking about. There is
a disk that is spring loaded and is pulled down to the lug (contact).
Twisting the lug slightly is enough to arc that spot and weld it. When
the whole contact is made at the same time there is enough suface area
to keep it from welding..

You have to keep lug from turning.

I meant to reply to the original about this.. but since you brought it
up

sleep4 wrote:

I'm surprised at that many failures over that short period of time.
Something ain't right somewhere. I've never seen a failure of a cole
hersee solonoid with years of service on my winch. I'm sure you have
already, but I would check all the wiring and connections real
carefully.

Robert, Neither of your installations are optimal.
In the Organic you are still dealing with the Kevlar Carbon Weave of the
main Fuselage. The 6200 is a great little Rx I have been flying the daylights
out of them.In the Organic try getting the Main Rx away from the Battery and
mount it down so the you have maximum exposure through the cutout on the
bottom of the nose. Get a longer extension that will allow you to place the
remote
up in the wing. You can break the lead with a Deans 3 Pin Connector at the
same place you have your wing harness connector. Put the Remote aft in the
Oracover section of the wing. See if this helps out. With the Taboo the
whiskers is the only way unless you put the RX in the wing in the Kevlar
portion and
run all you servos through a connector.
Good Luck

When you range test are the planes on the ground or on a table? If they are
on the ground put them on a table and then do the range check. The ground
causes terrible range checks.

[RCSE] 2.4 install problems

2007-12-13 Thread Robert Samuels

I bought a 2.4 9303 and
installed an AR6200 in an Organic which has an all Kevlar nosecone.
But it does not work. I put the main receiver in the nose with the
antennas fore and aft and the remote receiver on the bottom of the fuse
behind the tow hook with the antennas exiting the fuse through small holes so
that the antennas were pointing
left and right. The range is lousy.

I put
an AR6100 in the nose of a DLG TabooGt (all carbon fuse) with the
antennas sticking out the sides so it looks like a little catfish. The
range was poor. So I extended the antennas by laying a piece of
insulated wire along side the original antennas held with heat shrink
so that the new wire was 31 mm longer than the original antennas. This
gave me decent range and I've flown it successfully. But I don't like
all that wire sticking out in the airflow. I'd like a better
arrangement but can not think of one.

Does anyone know of any
successful installations in these planes? Or have suggestions?

Thank you

Robert Samuels St. Louis

So here is my take on looks...

Form follows function.period. The more you fly the gliders you like and
identify the particular aspects of one vs. another design that you like and
dislike, you tend to trend toward those favorable aspects. You tend to see
those aspects as right, correct, nice, pleasing, attractive, sexy,...um, well
you get my point. I should qualify that and say that this only applies if you
care how it flies, and can really truly identify the aspects of a design that
cause the favorable results. I look at gliders the way the wind does up to a
point. I have aesthetic constraints that keep me wind guided eye from seeing
the benefits of a pylon mounted wing for example, and sorry Tom Kiesling but
there is no way that I will ever think that the Mantis looks good even though
it is truly form to function desgin. My constraint circuits overloaded with
that one... ;-)

Again, like the posts show, beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.

Later.

[RCSE] Soaring Masters 2008- MOM

2007-12-13 Thread davidhauch

better yet.

you could run two standard winches with handsfree retrievers.

you could put two new guys on the course as soon as other two finished.

how fun would this be after a day of flying at the Nats. or Soar Masters.
you could throw a quarter in a can for each run you take, come
up with some way to bracket and score, and winner gets the can of $.

Jack, i'll run you for pink slips. :-)

I think a cool MOM speed task would be, have two guys launch at
the same time to the horn, one on the left course, the other on the right
course.

run the standard f3b 4 legs, and first one crosses the line wins,
just like drag racing.

you could do 6 legs with f3j planes to keep the speeds down.

Dave Hauch

Yea,
That would be tits !!
a MOM distance task and
a MOM speed task

That will seperate the boys from the heavy testicles

2007-12-13 Thread davidhauch

I think a cool MOM speed task would be, have two guys launch at
the same time to the horn, one on the left course, the other on the right
course.

run the standard f3b 4 legs, and first one crosses the line wins,
just like drag racing.

you could do 6 legs with f3j planes to keep the speeds down.

Maybe distance and speed could be an evening task set? Oh, that sounds
fun!

Looking forward to a great soaring contest in September. I am sure that
some will view this as just some east coast contest too, eh Chris?

Proud of the great soaring events held in the Ohio Valley!

All,

Since LJ brought it up please mark your calendar for Sept 18-21, 2008 for
the 2nd World Soaring Masters. It is on the official IAC calendar.

http://www.modelaircraft.org/events/nats/Calendar/wc092008.htm
Setup/practice day is the 18th and the MOM starts on Friday morning.
Sunday morning wraps up the MOM with the fly-offs for the cash beginning
around lunch time.

We are still in the early planning stages for the '08 event, but in
addition to the top spot payouts Horizon Hobby will be offering a mid-pack
fly-off for Big $'s (amount TBD).

So get ready because this will be bigger then the '06 event.

My constraint circuits overloaded with
that one... ;-)

[RCSE] Solenoid Failure

2007-12-13 Thread George
Our club has 3 winches and I have 2. All have double Cole Hersee solenoids.
All the failures have occurred in the last 4 that we have purchased in the
last year. So far all the replacement solenoids have functioned properly.
I'm wondering if there is a quality control problem.

I'm surprised at that many failures over that short period of time.
Something ain't right somewhere. I've never seen a failure of a cole
hersee solonoid with years of service on my winch. I'm sure you have
already, but I would check all the wiring and connections real
carefully.

[RCSE] Soaring Masters 2008

2007-12-13 Thread John Diniz
All,

Since LJ brought it up please mark your calendar for Sept 18-21, 2008 for the
2nd World Soaring Masters. It is on the official IAC calendar.
http://www.modelaircraft.org/events/nats/Calendar/wc092008.htm
Setup/practice day is the 18th and the MOM starts on Friday morning. Sunday
morning wraps up the MOM with the fly-offs for the cash beginning around lunch
time.

We are still in the early planning stages for the '08 event, but in addition to
the top spot payouts Horizon Hobby will be offering a mid-pack fly-off for Big
$'s (amount TBD).

So get ready because this will be bigger then the '06 event.

Re: [RCSE] Nats Scedule..... Who cares?

2007-12-13 Thread Mike Lachowski
What west coast event can you go to so that you can fly 8 days of
sailplane events and flights over 10 minutes?

Craig Allen wrote:

Nats ??? Is that that little East Coast contest you guys have every year? But
always complain about schedules and events?

Out West we have Viselia, IHLGF, Southwest Classic, Fresno Classic and on and
on And we fly 12 months out of the year :-)

So if your bragging about being 3 hours away from the Nats!!! More power to ya
:-

Enjoy your build season :-)

Re: [RCSE] Re: HKM's High End"

2007-12-13 Thread John Erickson
Mike,

I¹m sure you¹re seeing ³big² differences, but at first glance I also thought
about the Icon.

High End

Span: 133.8²
Area: 1,109 in2
Foil: 8.4%/2.3%
Weight: 72.3 oz
Wing loading: 9.38

Icon

Span: 130²
Area: 1,150 in2
Foil: 8.98%/2.25%
Weight: 76 oz
Wing loading: 9.5

I think the High End is optimized towards what you are looking for in an F3J
plane, but I don¹t see the Icon as far away in comparison. Let¹s just call
them aerial cousins. They both can get the job done.

Hey Doug, mmm, the High End is so NOT and ICON.

When I first saw a photo of the High End, I had no idea who designed it or
where it came from, but, I recognized something in the design. I studied
those pictures carefully, because I knew that the designer was someone I was
very familiar with. I mean those little up-swept tips, the bullet skinny
fuse, the functionally beautiful design, and the shape of the wing planform
all spoke to me. Then it hit meDieter Perlick! This must be Dieter's
new F3J model! WOW, COOL! Because, Dieter designs gliders the way I wish I
could, and executes his designs even better than I wish I could. And
because I flew Dieter's Altus' in the F3B Team Selects, then the F3B World
Champs. So, you might be able to tell that I am a little fired up about
this model, and can't wait to get mine.

So, taking nothing away from the venerable ICON, I just can't see how you
could use it in your comparison to the High End. They don't look anything
alike. I can guarantee you that Dieter did not glance at the ICON for
inspiration in approaching the High End design. To me, he answered my
dreamsStretch out an Altus. But he opted for a more practical tail, as
I would have chosen to stay with the Altus T tail.

Happy Holidays
