Hi guys
I find it kinda silly that all of you converts using 2.4 need instructions to
install a receiver in a plane Can't have Carbon/Kevlar in your fuse,
drilling holes in a fuse so the silly little antennas wiskers stick out just to
find it didn't work, data loggers. ( just pure silliness )

Also while all of you folks are wasting you cash on some radio that doesn't
compare to the Stylus in any way shape or form or can't do the things that
sailplanes need to do. I'm buying planes and flying! Not wondering where to
put the silly little whisker antennas or if the install gona work in my TOY
sailplane.

The Best part is I won't have to worry about all you guys on my channel (; = !
I fly on 72 meg's and I don't need instructions. Also I WON'T be using 2.4 in
the future either! I like my Airtronics Stylus radio and see no need to change
EVER!

Karlton Spindle... Where have I heard that name before?

Oh yes! Royal Multiplex! I bought a 'new' Multiplex vario w/ Hoopes TE
probe from them; it was over a month and a half before I received it,
every time I called about it Karlton was at a race no-one knew anything
about it, and when I finally received it, the manual, receiver crystal
and ear phone were missing. (No frequency marked on the TX crystal, so no
clue as to the frequency. No help from Multiplex, either, since it had
been discontinued.) After Royal crashed burned, and after using every
method to track down the Spindles for another several months, his wife
finally managed to send the manual. I finally sold it for half what I
paid, to a fellow modeler who took the chance that he could find the
correct receiver crystal. Most RC sellers distributors give very good
service, but my experience with Royal was awful. I hear I wasn't alone.

Hi Michael

No, I didn't measure the voltage.
I did work all my surfaces by hand till they were moving freely.
I was using a 6 volt pack in the Ventus and I still am.
All my problems went away when I changed over to analog servos.
One thing I did notice when using Digitals were the servo were getting hot
inside the wings that you could feel thru the wing skin.

I diden't like that

Did he ever measure the current draw on his model. If you have binding
surfaces, you are going to be pumping a lot of current through the servos
constantly. A 6-servo model at idle should be under 100 ma total.

I killed 8 Hitec 5125 servos in my 5 meter Ventas 2 ax thank god it was on

what was the cause was wire size, connector plugs, bad solder joints.
I finally changed out all the Hitec wing servos to Airtronics 141 servos and
have never had a problem since! I'll never use the 5125 again in any plane I
care about or fly hard.

My two cents.

Just ask anybody that attended last June's LISF (Long Island Silent
Flyers)

contest. They will tell you what a Pike Superior SL sounds like when the
ailerons are fluttering so violently that the entire wing is twisting to
very odd angles.

If control surfaces are fluttering NO SERVO is long for this world,
nor wing for that matter.
Fix the flutter!
Lighter surfaces help but the biggest thing is mass ballancing.

When I built a Long-EZ (full size) is was made clear that the control
surfaces MUST ballance in spec or they will flutter with the surface
usually coming off and then other nasty things happening.

At the speeds we are getting I expect to soon be seeing mass
ballancing on surfaces soon.

Subject: [RCSE] Some Thoughts on AMA

All the comments I have read on this exchange over the last two days bring
to mind some ideas that have been boiling in my mind for a couple of years
regarding the Academy of Model Aeronautics and how it is organized.

First, a little background regarding me. I have been a model airplane
hobbyist for forty-eight years. My father and his brother were modelers
before me. Like many others in the RC soaring branch of the hobby, I have
built and flown FF, CL, RC gas, and electric models over the years, but
have been pretty much exclusive to RC soaring for the last fifteen years.
I

fly with the Soaring League of North Texas (SLNT) in the Dallas/ Ft Worth
area and am an AMA contest director. I think you could say I am an active
contest flyer.

Holding thirty-one club contests a year, SLNT may be the most active
competition club in the country. There are thirteen unlimited sailplane
contests including two separate contest days of the Texas National
Tournament (TNT) each year. We will complete a total of fifteen
handlaunch/DLG contests this year. There were also three RES events
including one at TNT. I have flown in all but about three of these events
over the past five or six years and have been CD of all the handlaunch
events for the last six years. Attendance at these competitions has ranged
from about eight to forty-five entrants with the average being between
fifteen and twenty per event. Except for this year, SLNT has obtained AMA
sanctions for about fourteen of these contests each year for at least as
many years as I have been involved.

My issue with the organization of AMA is that AMA is governed by an
executive council made up of elected regional vice presidents. These
officers are elected by AMA members within a geographic area regardless of
their interest in the various disciplines of the hobby. For the most part
geographical areas are irrelevent to the issues affecting AMA. It is clear
to me that this system is doing a poor job of representing and dealing
with

the needs of a large portion of the hobby, including soaring. Model
aviation has evolved into a diverse set of disciplines with many AMA
members

specializing in just one or a small subset of these disciplines. There do
not seem to be many pylon racers who fly sailplanes, helicopters, indoor
free flight, and control line carrier as well. How effectively are they
represented by their regional vice president?

I believe that this system should be replaced by a realignment of the
governing board along the lines of special interest groups representing
the

modeling disciplines. Each special interest group should function as a
separate division of the organization with its own funding and staff. The
executive council should be made up of the heads of these groups with some
form of proportional representation based on the number of members in each
group. Members having interests in multiple special interest groups should
be given the opportunity to join multiple groups paying dues reflecting
these multiple interests.

The current organization of AMA is a legacy of the state of the sport in
the
1930's and 1940's when the academy was formed. Just making a model fly
was
a major achievement in those days. With rare exceptions, free flight was
the
only choice. Competition was primarily segmented along the lines of the
age

of the flyer and how the free flight models were powered. Junior, Senior,
and Open flyers flew glider, rubber, or gas free flight models in AMA
events. The interests of modelers in Virginia were different from those
in
California and representation was needed primarily to address those
regional

interests.

Today, age group competition is almost non-existent. Flyers travel the
whole country to fly in AMA events within their special interests. There
are at least eight different segments of RC soaring each having their own
needs regarding safety, insurance, flying sites, air space, competition
regulation, radio frequency control, and launch equipment issues. These
segments include electric, flat land thermal, slope, dynamic, hand launch,
aero-tow, F3J, and F3B. AMA's regional vice presidents, for the most part,
have no awareness let alone informed positions regarding any of these
segments or their specialized issues and yet they govern our sport.

The AMA contest sanction packages I have received recently have each had
several pages of information and a waiver form regarding the use of jet
turbine engines in my sailplane contests. AMA says we should not fly
gliders

higher than 400 feet AGL, but those same packages also included forms for
measuring and filing for altitude records for models flying up to several
thousand feet high. The safety column in Model Aviation has a lot of
information about people

Subject: sailplanes

Hi Al,
I was looking in Yahoo soaring and saw your post. I have some planes
I want to sell and thought you might know someone that is looking.

I have an Acacia f3j molded sailplane for sale. It crashed on one of
its first 5 flights and dinged all 3 wing panels. All of the damage
is forward of the spar and has been repaired such that the plane can
be and has been flown. I have launched it with my Real balls winch
and flown it many times since repairing it. It seems structurally
fine, aero good and cosmetically fair. It would make a good slope
practice or sport plane. It makes a fast TD plane. It weighs 80 ozs
RTF with a conservative cg. I will sell it for $340 with 6 HS 85
servos , no rcvr. The price is $260 with no servos. Prices assume
buyer pays shipping (~$20). This plane is should be a great slope
practice/sport plane. A good fixer could make it like new.

I also have a 3m Addiction made by Fred Sage for sale. It has the
7037 airfoil. The plane became a sort of backup as I fooled with an
Aegea and Mantis with faster airfoils. I got it in 2002. I will
sell it RTF with a Hitec rcvr, 6 HS 85 servos, battery, switch. Just
add your crystal and fly. It has had a good life, no crashes or
other damage. I did remove the landing skeg on the nose cone as I
don't fly contests. It weighs 58 ozs trimmed to fly.
$500 shipped in US . The plane is in excellant condition.

I can provide pictures if anyone is interested.
I am still into RC planes but have drifted into power planes. I got
lonely flying sailplanes alone and found a power club nrear Corning.
Now I am learning knife egdes, flat spins, hovering, etc.

Re: [RCSE] New post: hi starts

2005-04-17 Thread Albert E. Wedworth
Well...I do I have a story. Kinda hurts to tell ya all..
A few years back I'm thinking the First SVSS Spring Fling... I had one of
Pat Bowman's fomies a Cutlass slope ships..
I believe I got the Monster bungee i.e. Big Black thing from Mark Meck when
I was at CASL contest earlier in the year..
I had a wild idea to do hi speed bungee launching with little slope planes
I saw lots of folks doin it so I thought I can do this it's fun and way
fast!!!
So I set my Cutlass up for Hi speed bungee fun
I had been practicing at my home field and Wow! it was fast fun...
So I had a wild idea to show off to all the guys @ SVSS
Well right before the contest I set up my Bungee toys for ALL to see, and
see they did!
I hooked up my Cutlass and started walking back till that big old bungee
started to drag me forward..
Ready set go. Well the bungee let go all right! Next thing I know is a
funny sound and this Big Black thing coming at me at Mac 6 to fast to duck I
stand in awe and I'm hit from top to bottom by the Hi Start Rubber!!!
Let me tell ya all... This is NOT a good thing!
I lay there in PAIN! I was Black, Blue, Green from head to toe it looked
like a snake hit me. Oh and yes it hit me in that spot also..
I don't know how long I lay there in pain... but I crawled back to my truck
and laid there till I was called to fly in the contest. Let's say it wasn't
my best contest
I don't play with Bungee cords anymore.
Hurting as I type.

Re: [RCSE] flap servos

2005-04-11 Thread Albert E. Wedworth
Hi Walter.
Put the best servos you can afford in your plane. Put the strongest servo
on the elevator it is the most important...
Digitals aren't all that good... I haven't noticed that my planes fly
better with them installed.
I just pulled out all digital wing servos in my 6 meter Ventus 2AX and
reinstalled Airtronics 141 throughout..
I haven't burned out any of those servos yet... ( I won't go into my
problems with digital servos )
Also put the biggest battery pack you can squeeze in the nose ( less nose
weight )
Install the servos you like to use
Everybody has there preference i.e... JR, Volz, Airtronics, Hitec.

Cheers

[RCSE] Hitec Digital Servo Burnout problem solved

2005-03-05 Thread Albert E. Wedworth

Hi All

I fixed my servo problem!
I installed Airtronics 141 servos in the
wings.

Today I was bench flying my Ventus and guess
what??
Two more Digital servos burned
out!
( I hate when that happens! )
SO I got a wild hair and installed my fleet of
Airtronics 141 servos I had laying around..
Problem solved.
I guessthe wiring in the wing wasn't big
enough.
Everything is working GREAT
Cheers

[RCSE] Hitec Digi Servo burn out! Again...

2005-03-03 Thread Albert E. Wedworth

Hi All
Al
Here we go again...
So I sent the 4 burned out servos to Hitec for replacement,
3. HS 5125 MG 1. HS 5245 MG
Two 1/2weeks later.
I get them back Monday this week and.. Guess what They come back
in a Nice Plastic Blue Box with stickers even..
What happened to the cardboard boxes??
Were these old servos I got???
Did Hitec upgrade the servos and the boxes?
Or just the boxes?
So
I installed all the Returned servos in the Ventus.. Checked the radio and
adj all throws down to 100% so not to over drive the servo to death ..

Oh" by the way
I also bought one of those Battery Voltage reducers from
BatteryAmerica a VR 5.4Voltage Regulator.
Well.
When using theVR 5.4you can't charge the battery when this
device is installed.. Bummer.. don"t like that!

Also when I went to set up the plane AGAIN I found the battery
dead... Like the VR 5.4 sucked the battery down..
Pulled the VR 5.4 off charged the battery
and off I go.. AGAIN!

Plugged in one wing at a time and set up so not to move the servos to much
or over drive them..

Moved to the other wing and set it up
Wow! Everything is working great..
I'm impressed..

So I'm get out my throw meter and set all of my surfaces to factory
recommended settings
All of a sudden I here a weird sound from left my tip servo Gur. as
the servo is moving Holly Sh## Lost that one
Then as I look over to the right wing panel I see the flaplocked all
the way in the down position and that funnyI Let the factory smoke
out smell. "Oh Sh## "

Wow! I'm getting really worried about flying this plane with all the servos
burning out.

Any suggestions???
With out spending any more money!

Sorry Gordy, I can't afford Volz servos any more, There way to
expensive!
( I have Volz Wing Maxxon the Aileron servos of the Ventus with no
problems)
Maybe the Hitec servo are angry that I have Volz servos in the Ventus at
all..
Could this be???
Thanks
Al

I'm building a HM Ventus 2ax 5 m model
sailplane.
I've used Hitec digi servos
thought.
HS-5245MG digi Mini HS 5125 MG Digi
thin wing servos.
What I've noticed is they burn out very
easily..
What's up
I haven't gotten my plane in the air yet
andI've burned up 5 of the servos already!

What burned out so far...
1. rudder servo; on a pull pull system HS-5245
MG Digi
( to tight ) my fault... Non Digi
now.
1.Tip aileron HS-5245 MG Digi
servo.
2. Flap servos HS-5125 Thin Wing Digi
servo.
1. Spoiler servo HS-5245 MG Digi
servo.
None of my surface's are tight!
5cell battery pack.

Should I be concerned???
Is this normal???
Could it be too much throw?

Cheers

Re: [RCSE] Hitec Digi Servo burn out! Again...

2005-03-03 Thread Albert E. Wedworth

Hi Ben

I get my twisted wire 22 AWG from George Joy @ Peak
Electronics.
I use multiplex connectors.
Iuse Unassembled Gold plated
connectorsfrom Custom Electronics. Jo Joy George's wife @ Peak
Electronics.
I cut off the factory plugs from the servos and
solder direct to the harness. I never use a on /off
switch.But if I do use a switch.
I buy a Switch Jack from Dieter @
Shredair. I never had one of those fail !
So as you can see I build m own wiring
harness.
I never had a problem with the wiring harness I
build in any of my planes.
I just can't seem to spend money on something I can
make..
I don't think it's the wiring harness. I
think it's the servos them self. This is the first plane I ever used Digi servo
in because I never thought I needed them..
But I figured Hay, "what the heck" I got this 5
meter Ship I should use good stuff in it.
I have always used Volz servos in the past but with
the difference between the dollar /euro there out of my price range
now...
I hate to say it But...I think Gordy is RIGHT
when he tells us theyuse cheep brushes inour
servomotors!

I have never had such problems with any Non
Digiservo out there .

I'll bet far fewer than who are responding to this issue have built a kit
in recent years or ever intend to.

Is anyone actually building something for soaring? Tell us about it and
what your experience with it is. That could be a worthy contribution.

I've made the decision to pull the GliderKing.com website site offline for
the foreseeable future. I simply have too much rebuilding to do to bring
it
back from a nasty hard disk failure from October. The site, it's pictures,
it's database, and forum are more or less lost. I was planning on
rebuilding, but it's simply not worth the trouble as there are now more
sources than you can shake a stick at for information about our industry.
It's been fun.

You guys have some pretty pricey taste in bags. I always got along pretty
well with a good old black Hefty. Sometimes you gotta be careful when you
stuff
the remains of your plane in one, the broken off ends of the spars can
poke
holes in them.

Fellow glider guiders, It is a small thing, but bothersome. When I push
in the somewhat tight fitting aluminum wingrod into the fuse, it sheds a
nasty black tarnish like substance. This gets all over my hands and
thence onto my nice white wings. It cleans off with citrus cleaner. But,
is there a strategy to minimize the mess? Can the aluminum be passivated
some way thin enough to still fit into the carbon spar tubes? Is there a
cleaning approach to minimize the black mess? Any thoughts are
 appreciated!

 Hi!

I crashed my plane do to insufficiently charged battery and decided to
build low battery alarm. I looked around and there seem to be two kind of
alarms: with LEDs and with buzzer (and some of them have both).

What kind do you preffer? I found very simple and cheap schematics
 http://www.ncws.com/rcrock/lowbat3.htm that uses buzzer.

BTW, the plane is DLG with small battery.

All true. But another 'good thing' about getting a spray gun is you wind
up
getting a compressor. And a compressor, even if only a small one, and a
blow
gun is so very very useful for cleaning off items. That alone is worth the
price of admission IMO. Having compressed air on hand is exordinarily
useful
 addition to one's shop. YMMV.

 Jeff

Anticipating a compressor is why I installed an extra 220/240v outlet in
my
garage during our remodel. Now who has a recommendation on a 'quiet'
 compressor?

I like this idea from Mark Mech about using paraffin wax instead of epoxy
to
hold the nose weight in place. Has anyone tried this with standard buck
shot
yet. Not sure what size buck shot I have since I'm not a hunter, but it's
fairly small. Maybe as small as bird shot. Sure would be a lot easier to
 adjust weight.

I use shot gun pellets, ( old ones )

This summer I needed to come up with some large
nose weights for some mid sized UAV's.
We had an abundance of tungsten powder and paraffin wax,
so I filled the nose with powder, then poured the
molten wax in and stirred the mess up.
I only added enough wax to saturate the powder, it doesn't
take much. The weight can easily be modified by scooping
out the excess with a spoon. Ours were about 12lbs per plane!!!
I was thinking about putting together a glider nose weight kit
with 5oz. of tungsten, and 2oz. wax with a piece of plastic
to glue in as a retainer.
If anyone is interested, I will put them together.
It is only feasible if I order a lot of tungsten, the stuff is fairly
 cheap in quantity..

 Rick,
I purchased a Thule cartop ski carrier a year ago
at REI. It is the largest (longest) carrier available,
 about $400.00 at that time.
I have not had any complaints, it will take any of
 my stuff.
My problem was bringing it home to Maui. I checked
on shipping, and it would have cost another $400.00. I
had my wife drag it along as airline baggage; $75.00.

[RCSE] Winch Batterys

2001-02-24 Thread Albert E. Wedworth

Hi All

With all the talk about winch batteries. Here is my two cents
I asked the same question of the F3B guys at the team trials years ago.
I was told to by the cheapest lo cost battery you can get. Because the
batteries go away so fast.
Charging and deep discharging kills batteries.
Why spend $80 + dollars to just be replaced every year?
