I went to the site and donated $20.00, super easy and quick using paypal. [RCSE] Re: Contests; why?
Contests are the engines that drive the development of the planes we all enjoy for each our own reasons. Contest pilots push out the envelope of performance. Contest pilots want answers to questions that most pilots would never ask, but all builders and pilots get to benefit and extend their enjoyment of the hobby because of these answers. Mostly pilots fly contests because of the wealth and adoration of our wives and women everywhere who find us irresistable in our shorts and floppy hats with a stopwatch around our neck. Re: [RCSE] Hard data on L/D values for models
Some good posts on this thread. As pointed out by Anker, flying at the air speed that produces the best L/D for a stationary airmass will by definition cover the most ground (horizontal movement) for the altitude lost (vertical movement). We as pilots are often interested in being able to travel as far as possible over the ground when the airmass IS moving, either horizontally (wind) or vertically (sink). Usually if the airmass is rising (lift) we are content to stay in that area of the airmass, and will even circle ;-) The rule of thumb is to "speed up" in sink, or into the wind, and slow down in lift. But how much? And which airfoil/planform/airframe configurations can still maintain a high L/D a a wider range of(higher and lower) airspeeds? This information would be wonderful to have. If drawn out graphically as a polar it would show for each aircraft design what to expect in the way the plane could be flown. It would also show to all on paper why some airfoils are notorious for being "fussy" about the speed they are flown at (sharply peaked polar) or not fussy (flat polar). If plotted with minimin sink speed and stall speed, and maybe even stall speed in landing configuration we could suddenly be able to know much about a design just by reading the (accurate ;-) performance data. Except for launch...hmmm The basic desire would be a plane that could achieve it's best L/D even at very high (air) speed, allowing it to effortlessly penetrate even very high winds, at low wing-loadings. This low wing-loading plane with high speed L/D cruise then would still have a low sinkrate at low speed, allowing tight thermal turns in weak lift while still climbing and be able to slow way down to land. This is pretty much exactly what most designs have been striving for, with compromises being made to optimize for regional or personal preferences. In the USA we have the popular "west coast" planes, i.e. the Addiction, which gives up range in wind for better climb and especially slower landing speeds, as in California we "always make our times anyway" and many contests are decided...literally...by a few inches difference in landing scores over a whole contest. In Europe they have wind, lots of it, and low clouds and often poor lift. They prefer planes that perhaps don't land as accurately (they measure by the meter not the inch anyway) but can hang in the wind, then get back to the field after taking the one thermal way downwind to make the typically 10 minutes or longer European thermal task time. We fly (relatively) much shorter tasks with much higher precision landings, in different weather conditions. Understanding and quantifying these performance and stylistic differences would seem to me to make a lot of sellers and purchasers of cool toys happier. There would be less of the suprise and dissapointment that I hear about when a model that is supposed to be "the best" doesn't do what the owner wants it to. Usually through no fault of it's own. This info would also make ballasting less of a "black art," at least some of the time anyways, and allow people to buy a range of planes to suit the conditions they expect to fly in. Plus lots more to debate on RCSE. I think the technology is just about here now... JR John RoeLaguna Hills, Ca www.MartialArtsAcademy.org Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! Mail.
[RCSE] Which GPS?
I've had several requests for the size/shape/model of GPS unit that might be suitable for sending up in a model to record data. Probably the best one readily available for this, and one that is very popular with the full-scale crowd is the Garmin E-trex. There are a couple of versions, you want the one that has barometric as well as GPS altitude capture, I believe it's the "Vista." The unit is about the size and shape of an 1800 series Nokia cell phone. Very useful in the car as well, or for boating, hiking or whatever... The set-up really does work very, very well- better I think than any other combo I have seen or used, and I've used quite a few. This set up throws my F3B/F3J TD planes easily 200-300 feet with good zoom technique, and no need to use launch mode. It is also very compact and takes little space, while being fairly user-friendly. I have used it in my front yard streched down the sidewalk to toss my 3M Psykos and thermal around over my neighborhood without incident. I've seen Joe wurts go even higher on my rig, but he flies straight at the nail, then zooms like launching a zagi etcthat's not for the faint of heart. I just killed a CF 2 meter plane last month that way. Killed it all the way dead forever, was kinda cool, and loud. This same rig works great for smaller planes, and is capable of inducing flutter on any foamy I've seen if you take it back to far. It is a very nice set-up. JR P.S. [RCSE] HL/IHLGF Field report...
>Denny Wrote: > John Roe says he's getting 100 feet No one has ever measured my throw, so no one... *including myself*... has said how much I'm getting, on this exchange or anywhere else, ever. Here's some good stuff! After carefully verifying the accuracy of two different laser range finders, which are certified by the manufacturer (Bushnell) to be accurate to within +- one meter, or better, we found that accuracy was reliable at ranges from 15 to 200 meters, on large and small stationary and moving targets. I measured the launch heights of apprx. 20 competitors at the recent IHLGF at Poway, both in practice and in competition, in the wind and in relatively calm conditions. I was able to get very precise measurements by standing directly in the path of the throw, then aiming directly overhead at the plane as it was "pushed over" into level flight. The results below are the result of this research, and are provided to for all to enjoy, and might also be considered carefully if you are thinking of getting a new plane, based on where you fly and your athletic ability. Under low-to-no wind conditions launch heights of 60+ feet were common with the stronger javelin-style throwers, with 75 feet+ being acheived by some. There were some pilots who had trouble getting more than 50 or so feet, but they were much in the minority. The side arm plane "Uplink" thrown by it's manufacturer got consistant 75 foot launches. There were no launches below 45 feet by anyone who was trying to throw hard. In the wind, the stronger pilots using the javelin-style throw were able to consistantly launch 75+ feet. There were perhaps 5 or 6 that I verified were launching to 85 feet or more, consistantly. The weakest few pilots that I measured were able to launch 60-65 feet. The same uplink thrown by the same gentleman- side arm style- was reaching 90+ feet, a height that only a few javelin-style pilots could beat.but there were definitely at least three guys who could launch just as high as the side-arm plane, every time. Look to see some familiar conventionally-launched planes being offered in a side-arm version, as it turns out that no span penalty or much weight penalty is required to make a side-arm plane work. For many people the side arm launch will be higher than they can throw conventionally. The disadvantages of the side-arm launch will still be turn-around time (important only in competition) and directional control, although that could be improved with practice. As far as High-aspect ratio HL planes are concerned, I flew an extreme example of one, the new Spectre VR by DJ aerotec. I found it had very nice handling, a good sink-rate and was a joy to fly in light lift and low-wind conditions. In the wind it was OK, and could get around the sky as well as all but the most advanced planes on the field. However, as Mark Navarre has previously noted, I could not launch it hard, period. In zero or near zero wind, I could still get an "average" launch even with a low-effort throw. In the wind however I was unable to get anything like a typical launch, without fluttering the wings and/or the tail. I do think the plane has potential, and definitely am amazed at the fact that a 5.5 ounce four-servo 60" plane is even possible. [RCSE] Some hard facts of launch
Message text written by Paul Clark: >"Does anyone know if this actually happens - do you get a little >more launch height when you throw your sailplane into rising air?" Way yes. Also...we have been measuring launch heights with great precision utilizing a Laser range-finder... and some may be suprised with the results. With a 7-9 mph wind JOE WURTS and MARK NAVARRE were throwing VERY consistant 29-32 meter launches...no sweat. Joe was throwing his ancient 6063 Encore and Mark was throwing an old own-design (wizard rip-off) with the wing tips cut off (that zona saw again). and yes Joe was out-launching Mark by a meter or so. I'm guessing that not everyone throws that high, and today we lasered some ordinary mortals, and sure enough thier launches were more like 15-21 meters in the same conditions. [RCSE] VIDEO IS HERE, theThree R's of Soaring, with Joe Wurts
The three "R's" of soaring, a video clinic with JOE WURTS is finally shipping to the wonderfully patient people who have ordered it already, and want to support the USA THERMAL DURATION TEAM's defense of the gold medal we won in 1998. I wonder how many people would like to have World Champion Joe Wurts all day long to teach them on the field, then in the classroom, then on the field, then in the classroom? You too, huh? The video is one hour and 20 minutes long, and covers the three R's of soaring and a lot more! R-eading the air and the thermals. R-iding the thermals, up and out! R-e coring lost thermals (we all lose 'em sometimes) Ground signs, air signs, reading the plane, thermal behavior, search patterns, hand-launch throwing, 3 meter strategy, common mistakes, good and bad habits, In the field AND in the classroom. This and more! And for charity, for TEAM USA F3J Y2K! Video is $20.00, delivered to you in the USA, NTSC format only for now. Tee-shirts are available as well for $15.00 Cash, checks Credit cards, all OK. I have a little more than 100 pre-orders to handle first, and may run out of tee- shirts, so email me to get on the list! All of you who have patiently waited so long, be happy! THANK YOU Joe Wurts, you might think twice when people start learning how you do it... If not the inventor, Joe certainly has made DS accessable to the masses, and wrote a brief article in s&EM magazine. RE: [RCSE] Hand Launch Video FAQ
The video is now a full month behind my promised date. The problem is mainly that it was professionally shot, and for basically free. The editing etc. has not happened, due to the company who has the digital masters (nearly four hours worth of raw footage) not having "spare time" to turn it into a video for me. For free. I am looking at other options right now. Unfortunately the results may not be as professional as I had hoped. The information will still be as valuable. [RCSE] Boring/F3F
I am as bloodthirsty and competition-crazed as the next guy when it comes to slope-racing. I am totally enthralled with wingtip-to-wingtip racing- even when expensive disasters are inevitable. However... Tom Copp has really done a great, fantastic, excellent and bitchin' thing for slopers in Southern California by setting up and conducting F3F races on a regular and continuing basis. The facts are the facts, and to the world-wide soaring community slope racing is defined as "F3F". I am EXTREMELY GRATEFUL that someone is willing to give me the opportunity to compete in this event on a continuing basis for a measly few bucks, and judging by the enthusiastic comments of the pilots at a race with dismal conditions, the future is extremely bright for this event. I also have talked to several manufacturers/importers and one of the spin-off benefits of an entire new facet of this sport gaining popularity is more sales of better planes, more development and designs and it's all good... Re: [RCSE] Someone wanted MPH for speed record
There is some confusion about how far the plane flies in the FAI task "C" of F3B. The actual requirement is to complete four legs of 150 meters each. The plane of course flies quite a bit farther in accomplishing that task, both horizontally and vertically. I calculated the ACTUAL average speed of the plane in MPH, as that is kinda interesting, rather than an "imaginary" average speed. There is no official speed- it's not at issue, just E.T. So 4 X 160 (150m+turn radius+ any over, most likely more)= 640 meters 200 meters start height - zero finishing height (actually a couple of feet ;-) =200 meters 200 vertical meters + 640 horizontal meters = 840 meters. This is probably quite close. I understand many have never seen an F3B speed run, and are thusly confused... [RCSE] Top 10 (different approach)
If I were to make a "Hall of Fame" for soaring I would have catagories of achievement as I think there are different areas which have different "heros", and they all deserve recognition. You could then put them all into a spreadsheet and write a little macro to come out with a "combined" all-time greatest 10 ten... Areas of recognition I would include: 1. Manufacturing/ Distributing People we love to hate, but what the hell would we do without these "cottage" industry guys and thier long-suffering wives? I'd have Sal Defrancisco, the RnR guys, the DJ aerotec guys and ...maybe...even the Kman ;-) as current members- just as a start...Oh yea, and all those foamy guys who are making the future safe for soaring by stopping the "greying" 2. Design/Engineering Kinda important... Mark Allen, Lee Renaud, Joe Hahn, Joe Wurts, Mike Popescu, Don Peters, Fred Mallet, Charlie Richardson etc., etc., 3. Support The unsung heroes- perhaps the most important of all top guys like me who just "show up", pay my little entry fee and expect a perfectly run, perfectly fair, perfectly safe competition/event with good weather... They also are out there helping "newbies" and good PR for clubs and soaring in general. Karl the "Winchman" (HSS) Don Richmond, Ron Schark George Joy, Roger Saville Vince at ISS Many, many, many others 4. Oh yea, guys who win a lot. This people are important because they find out things about soaring, push back margins and drive developement that benefits everyone. They also are a motivator to us all to improve... You all know who these guys are... This is just my Humble opinion, and if I am leaving out or whatever remember that I am a west coast relative newcomer (feb. 1997) to "Big time" soaring... Otto writes: >Seems to me that that the future of F3J is in the winches. >Sure it will be very much like Task A from F3B but the >models will still be very different when you don't >need to make Tasks B and C I like towing, and the bizarre "launch race" that is part of F3-J because of the 10 minute working/flight time situation. It adds an element of adventure to an otherwise mundane "floater" contest. However I don't think that F3-J would cease to exist if it adopted even IDENTICAL rules to F3B task A. I actually think that participation, at least in the USA would increase, as winches plus no need for an instant "nuclear" launch, with the death penalty for mishaps/line breaks etc. plus the extremely annoying "reflights" would appeal to a much broader segment of thermal pilots. There are many pilots who just might win a TD contest on any given day who will probably never develop the skills needed for F3B speed or distance. They also would be able to fly just about any model they like, with at least some chance of winning. The BARCS people have lamented the fact that F3-J has become brutally high-tech and difficult/dangerous/expensive beyond the originator's intentions. All could be made well again by using winches and 11 minutes of working time. This would make the event much more accessable to the masses, and the F3B geeks will fly it anyway, since we have no life, and can use our killer planes if we want to. Meanwhile ordinary folk can compete with a chance to win with the TD models they use every weekend now, and without needing a team etc. to be a player.
