Re: [RCSE] Stylus programming help needed
1. The 2A2FER wing type should be used. The other wing types are much more difficult to set up. 2. I've put the motor on the Gear channel (channel 8). 3. I made the launch switch the arming switch for the motor. Once it's armed, the right slider is my throttle. Several people suggested that I make the motor a simple on/off switch, but the thought of pouring all of that power at once scares me. So I'll use a throttle until I get comfortable with it. I also have a tad of down elevator mixed with the motor switch. 4. In order to get the slider to work as a throttle, I used the C-Mix and made the master and slave channel Gear. Then I was able to activate the trim and set the right slider as the trim control. [RCSE] 9303 Left Handed DLG Setup
All, Background: I'm left handed and fly DLG's (among other airplanes) and recently got a 9303. I got the Heli version because I like having a spring switch vs. the push button that's on the left side of the sailplane and acro TXs. Anyway, since I throw left handed I like having my launch switch for DLGs on the right side of my TX. I really wanted to move the spring switch to the right side of my TX but was apprehensive, This weekend I threw caution to the wind and moved the switch. Here's how I did it. First I disconnected the battery and removed the back of the TX. Next I unplugged the wiring harness that connects the back to the front. Then I removed the switches from their mounting holes. I used a multi-meter to figure out whether the spring switch defaulted to an open or closed circuit. In order for it to work for me on the other side of the TX, I needed to move the black wire on the spring switch to the opposite end of the switch so it defaults to a closed circuit. After I did this, I unsoldered the wires that connect the switches to the circuit board on the back of the TX. Finally, I switched the switches to the appropriate sides and soldered everything back. So now I have a long two position toggle switch on the left side of my TX (timer start/stop) and a spring loaded long switch (DLG launch) on the right side of the TX. I'm sure the warrantee is voided (although my solder joints are perfect :), but it works for me. BTW, I love the flight mode feature of this TX. [RCSE] Stylus full house electric setup
Hello to all, I'm setting up my first electric full house sailplane (Muller Escape) and would like to know what other Stylus users have for their basic setup. So far, I'm using the F5B setup described ever so briefly in the glider card manual. I'd like the flaps to remain on the throttle stick and be fully retracted when the stick is all the way forward. However, I'd also like the throttle to be on the same stick. Is this the norm or even practical? I've contemplated putting the motor control on the right slider switch. I'm open for suggestions. Re: [RCSE] Re: Calling for F3J and TD contests
It's also important for your timer to be someone other than yourself. I remember one of my first contests stepping up to the winch with my Great Planes Spirit, butterflies in my stomach and no timer. The winch master asked me where my timer was and I said that I didn't have one. He informed me that I needed a timer in order for the flight to count. I asked him if he'd time for me and he said that he couldn't. I found a timer and proceeded to fold the wing of the Spirit on launch. Good times, good times! It does seem to make sense to put the CF between the spar and webs to avoid de-lamination. I always lightly scuff the CF and vacuum bag it to the spar. So I just took the gears out of that servo and put them in the other. Now I will send the slow servo in for service. Mike Las Vegas, NV RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Stylus/JR 770 RX help (thank you!)
For everyone who responded to my dilemma, thank you! Also, thank you for not making me feel like a bonehead. I've been into RC for 20 years and had no idea that you couldn't intermingle brands of PCM equipment. It's amazing what can slip through the cracks. Anyway, I'll be getting some 700's to replace the 770's. Mike RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Stylus/JR 770 RX No Workie
All, I just bought two JR 770 PCM rxs and I can't get them to work with my Stylus. I know the crystals, battery, and servos are all good. I've tried the different modulations on the Stylus with no luck (PCM, PPM, PPM-INV). I've tried both rxs with no luck. So now I have 2 rxs that I can't get to work. Can anyone out there think of anything I'm missing? Is there anyone else using this combo with success. Thank you, Mike Las Vegas, NV RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] New post: hi starts
I have a couple of highstart stories: It was 1985 and I had completed my first RC airplane. It was a Drifter II and I couldn't have been happier. The radio I had was a 2 channel car radio on an airplane frequency. Rudder was on the right stick and elevator was on the left. Anyway, after a couple of flights by an experienced friend and a couple of flights by me and a couple of weekends later, I noticed the rudder was a little out of trim. Being 12 years old at the time, I didn't think too much of it until after it's next launch. The plane left my hand, went about 15 feet up, did a hamerhead stall turn and plowed into the ground. It destroyed the nose all the way to the leading edge of the wing. I spent the entire next week making the fuselage look exactly like it did when I finished it. On its first launch after I repaired it (I never bothered to straighten that rudder out) the same thing happened again! A friend took the plane home with him, made the nose bullet proof and straightened out the rudder. I had several flights on that plane and I vow that when I stop moving I'll own another one. My second story happened just south of Atlanta, GA in 1998. I had just finished a 2M Banshee that had open class stabs on it (I didn't know they were open class stabs until I saw another Banshee and wondered why my kit came with them). Anyway, I was too cheap/lazy to join the local club so I decided to go out on my own. I found a field in back of a school that was the exact length of my highstart and infested with red ants. Long story short, I didn't have enough pull on the highstart to properly launch the plane and didn't care because my hands and ankles were being bitten by red ants. I don't know why I thought everything would be better if I tried to launch the plane. The plane went up about 20 feet or so and stalled. The highstart somehow had enough pull to drive the airplane into the ground wingtip first. The only thing damaged was the right wingtip and I repiared it, moved to San Antonio, TX and had dozens of flights with that plane. Morals of the stories: 1. Do a thorough preflight before each launch! 2. If you're being bitten by red ants: 1, don't launch because the ants will probably keep biting you while your plane is in the air and 2, destroy every red ant mound in sight! Re: [RCSE] I flew IN a glider today and Gordy didn't!!!
It was a beautiful weekend in Las Vegas for all types of flying (except IFR!) A few warnings about full scale sailplanes: 1. The DS groove is a little larger 2. The walk of shame for an off field landing is usually longer 3. They don't hold up to multiple dork landings 4. Forget about discus launching (unless you have a few friends to help out) 5. If you decide to mix and match parts, prepare to become a test pilot 6. You're probably going to spend over $1500 for top of the line (without servos!) 7. Make sure you have someone else do the dive test to set the CG 8. Hand catching is not recommended 9. Your winch had better have Real Balls and a V8 10. Make sure that when you're higher than approximately 400 feet above ground level and when within three (3) miles of Mc Carren, you notify the airport operator. [RCSE] 9303 Vs. Stylus?
I've been using the Stylus for a few years now and was wondering how the 9303 compared. I like several things about the Stylus, but there are a few I don't: 1. I think the camber setup is confusing 2. I don't like the way you have to reset the timer. It's not practical for the quick turn-around DLG launches. 3. It's heavy (although for DLG, it exercises both arms) 4. If you select wing type after you've done some programming, everything is reset The things I love about the Stylus are: 1. The ability to change channels with the modules (although they're a little expensive) 2. The ability to fly on both positive and negative shift Anyway, I've read some of the literature about the 9303 and now that they're in the hands of the consumers, I'm curious how it stacks up to the Stylus. [RCSE] 5 Cell Battery Alternative
I was at the local hobby shop yesterday in need of a battery pack for one of my planes. They had several 4 cell 1100mAh flat packs and some square packs that would not fit into the nose of my plane. I was contemplating just building my own, but they only had 700mAh cells and I really wanted something larger. So, I noticed the RC car packs. In particular, the Team Losi Mini-T 5 cell 1100mAh packs. So I bought one, soldered on a new plug and it fits great. I usually don't run 5 cells, but this seemed like my best option to get me in to the air quickly. Mike Las Vegas, NV RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Home made shipping boxes.
I've had really good luck getting large sheets of cardboard from the back of furniture stores. I'd just use my long straight edge and a screwdriver to score and bend the cardboard into box shapes. Lately, I've found another source for ready made boxes. It's a store that sells vertical blinds. The boxes are longer than what is needed to ship open class planes. The width and thickness are perfect and they are very sturdy cardboard. At one time I looked into buying boxes, but in order to get a good deal, I'd have to buy in bulk and I don't ship enough airplanes to justify that. I hope this information helps. There are three small repairs: two on the left wing and one on the fuselage which is a solid repair that is covered by the nosecone. The reason I'm selling it is because I just got another plane and I promised my wife I'd sell this one. [RCSE] Albuquerque Soaring
Hello to all. I recently had the opportunity to spend a month in Albuquerque, NM. I knew ahead of time I'd be there, so I sent my Encore ahead in a Sportube via Fed Ex ground. I packed it very well and it arrived in perfect condition. I had some family obligations that prevented me from flying two of the weekends I was there but I was able to fly with the Albuquerque Soaring Association at the sod farm in McIntosh on my last weekend in town. They're a great group of people and instantly made me feel welcome. I had some extra room in my Sportube so I brought back an Ellipse 4. I shipped it with my Encore via DHL and everything arrived in perfect condition. Thank you Mr. Averill for the great deal on the Ellipse! You're throwing with the wrong hand! I predict that if you switch to throwing left handed, the pain in your right bicep will diminish. [RCSE] Re: Luddite!
I truly believe there is a place for every type and class of sailplane, from the most simplistic trainer to the cutting edge of technology. I liken our hobby to car racing or any other sport. Like other activities, it depends what your aspirations are. How far do you want to take it? Do you need the latest technology to win contests? Probably not. All the technology in the world is useless if you don't possess the skill to exploit it. A good majority of us really aren't that skilled to fly a plane to it's full potential. However, a smart manufacturer will put their product in the hands of someone who has the skill to make it work for them. Then when they win contests, people just gotta have it! I think there is a lot to be said for a good design and there are a lot of them out there. There are also some not so good designs. The best design is the one that works best for YOU. You can have the most expensive (because we all know that the more expensive something is, the better it is, RIGHT?!?!) plane in the world, but what if you are afraid to fly it? I was terrified of my first full house plane because I really shouldn't have spent as much money as I did. So what happened, I flew it so cautiously, my soaring stagnated. In order to get better at soaring, you have to take some risk. One more thermal turn down low, following that thermal further down wind, flying on windy days, unfamiliar fields, etc. I'm not suggesting that you can't get comfortable with an expensive plane. But, stay within your means and get good with what you're comfortable flying. Then progress as your skills and budget allow. Heck, look for last year's greatest thing if you need to go that route. Chances are, it's still pretty good this year too! I believe that competition is very good for soaring. Just attending a contest is educational. I had been flying for years before I went to my first contest. I had never used a winch or seen six servo planes. Naturally, I had to have both afterward!Competition forces manufacturers to out do eachother and I believe the design lessons learned can have a trickle down effect. However, competition is not the be all end all of our hobby. Having fun is the reason for doing all of this. I think contests are fun. My best flights are usually the ones right after the competition ends! In short, spend within your means. The best plane in the world is not necessarily the best plane for you. Get really good with what you have before you upgrade. If you have to have the best every season, give the young upstart flyer a good deal on your seconds. [RCSE] IHLGF and BAD LUCK
This was my first IHLGF and I certainly had some bad luck. Three mid airs (ofcourse none of which were my fault!) Well maybe the one where someone launched into my plane, that one was definitely my fault. Due to my timer transposing a time, I had a 1000pt flight turned into a 0. I had back to back flights in completely down air. But enough about the negative! I learned more at this contest than I ever could flying local contests and by myself. I now know what strategies to practice for next year. My launch gained about 10 feet. I have finally put faces with a lot of names I see on the exchange and other places. I saw the absolute latest in planes and technology. Finally, I saw some incredible flying by some masters of the sport. I can't wait until next year because the only place I can go is up! Mike Conte
[RCSE] Wanted: Maple Leaf Fuselage(s)

Re: [RCSE] RES spoilers: JR8103
I disagree with putting the spoilers on the aileron channels. I think that you should set them up as dual flaps. That way, you can use the right stick for rudder and not have to bother with any complex mixing. The spoilers can then be used with the flap switch, throttle stick (mix sp), or the pot on the top of the transmitter. Plus, you should still have end point adjustments. Just my 2 cents. Sincerely, Michael Conte
