I must be missing something. The blue thingy is an anodised metal servo

Anyone know if the dark spots on the blue thingy are setscrews? Is it
possible that someone got smart enough to manufacture a thin,

I have been on the list for a couple of days, is this

 6 threads about hearing thermals.???
3 about soaring Utah. I live in Jersey
19 useless threads of Tungsten and depleted uranium

8 threads about winch rpms (this could have been
 answered in one post).

Is there any info geared to learning and sharing info

 winter?

I know I just put my foot in my mouth and pissed some

get better, or is it sporadic? Is there another list

Again I am sorry if I ticked some people off, this

RE: [RCSE] PVA Help

2000-11-20 Thread Michael Imsic

Bill

PVA is soluble in water, but it produces a colloidal
solution rather than a aqueous one. Are there any
numbers after the trade name? eg. 20-105? If it is
20-105 (20% hydrolysis, 105 centipoise viscosity) or
greater then you will need to dissolve it in a mixture
of alcohol and water. Preferably methanol (which is
used in the alcoholysis process) but ethanol (rubbing
alcohol) will do.

Why are you trying to thin PVA?

RE: [RCSE] f3b event

2000-09-08 Thread Michael Imsic

Firstly let me qualify this post by saying that I was not present and I
have formed my opinions about the incident solely on the reports in RCSE.

I think anyone placed in a similar situation would have done the same
thing. But an attempt was made to conceal the mismatched wing with tape.
So obviously Darryl et. al. were well aware of the rules. Since they had
to resort to deception, In my mind and also theirs, they were cheating. I
am well aware that Daryl is a very skilled pilot, and deserves to be a
member of the US team but what about the 4th placed pilot? I wonder if
Joe Average would have gotten away with it.

Flame away.

To those who wonder about the DP plane change. Several asked
 my thoughts on
it and if it was legal.

Let me just say this. If I was in Darryl's place I believe I would have
done the exact same thing. He needed a plane to fly, someone
 presented a
possible fix, and several started working on the fix. Simple.
 The CD and
jury (and competitors) are the ones who should rule his plane
 as legal or
not. The CD said it was fine, and he flew.

That's it, no judgement, no protest, no issue from me. Darryl
 competed, he
qualified, and to be honest he FLEW to thrid place (and a place on the
team). I respect that and for everyone on the team (and
 especially those
pesky east coast guys who were almost on the team) I say congrats.

Actually, when Dennis lost the cup the first time, Stars and Stripes was at
a distinct disadvantage in the lighter winds to the Kiwi's famed winged
keel. That boat proved better on all points of sail in the lighter winds.
This design proved so successful that in all of the keel designs of today,
you will see a variation on that concept. Everyone has wings now a days.
SaS did better in the higher winds, which were not to be found during the
contest. I remember Conner winning a couple of races that year to the
cheers of the Brigade. Being a sailing school they would announce the
roundings regularly. However, I believe the advantage was about .5 knots
better speed which at the roundings would translate into 5 to 15 second
advantage per leg. In sailing at that level, that is HUGE! In America's
cup races, if you win a race by 30 seconds, that is considered blowing them
away. This forced Conner to take more chances. He couldn't play cover so
he would mix it up, trying to get into a tacking duel, but the Kiwi's were
better. His only chance was to run away from the Kiwi's try and find more
wind on the other side of the course. When splitting, you risk all. Sure,
he lost and sometimes big, but if he stayed with it, sailed conservative,
then he surely would have lost but only by the speed difference of the
boats.

There are six of these cells inside a Sanyo/GE "9-volt"
rechargable battery. It's only $8. The cells are connected
with tabs, so making an RX pack out of them is easy.

BTW, I reliably get only 100 mAh out of these cells
at a 125 mA discharge, not the rated 120 mAh.
They're still great cells, though.

UPDATED ANNOUNCEMENT!

The three "R's" of soaring, a video clinic with JOE WURTS
is finally shipping to the wonderfully patient people who have
ordered it already, and want to support the USA THERMAL
DURATION TEAM's defense of the gold medal we won in 1998.

I wonder how many people would like to have World Champion

then on the field, then in the classroom?

You too, huh?

The video is one hour and 20 minutes long, and covers the three
R's of soaring and a lot more!

R-eading the air and the thermals.
R-iding the thermals, up and out!
R-e coring lost thermals (we all lose 'em sometimes)

Ground signs, air signs, reading the plane, thermal behavior,
search patterns, hand-launch throwing, 3 meter strategy, common
mistakes, good and bad habits, In the field AND in the classroom.

This and more! And for charity, for TEAM USA F3J Y2K!

Video is $20.00, delivered to you in the USA, NTSC format only for now.
Tee-shirts are available as well for $15.00

Cash, checks Credit cards, all OK.

I am caught up (almost) and am filling orders as I get them.
There are 250 videos available for now, they are half-sold.

My FAX machine is secure, in my office at home.
My Voice mail on 433-3657 is secure, only I have access to it.

Those who asked about seeing a picture of the T-Shirts, go to...

[RCSE] Vacuum bagging and leading edges.

2000-02-23 Thread Michael Imsic

I am having a great deal of trouble getting a decent leading edge on my
vacuum bagged HLG wings. I cut the Mylar about 1/8" short of the leading
edge. I apply a 1" wide strip of 1.5 oz glass cloth to the leading edge
with 3M super 77 spray and then wet out the glass with a brush and scrape
the excess off with a plastic card. I then wet out the glass on the Mylar
and place it around the core. The Mylar is cut about 1/8" short of the
leading edge. I then cover the Mylar, including the exposed leading edge
with hand towel paper as a breather and the whole lot goes into the vacuum
bag. When set, the leading edge seems to require a lot of sanding and I
usually end up exposing the core in a number of places. I have also tried
using peel ply over the exposed leading edge but this seems to leave it too
dry. Next I thought I would place nothing over the exposed leading edge,
instead relying on the vacuum bag to give me a nice surface.

Can anyone offer me any suggestions? If I cant just sort out the leading
edges I will have myself a set of beautiful wings.

[RCSE] 3M Super 77 spray vs. High tack 76 spray

76 on foam cores? Does anyone know what the differences between the two
are? Alternatively, is there anyone in Australia using Super 77? The only
information I managed to get from the 3M website was the following:

Adhesive, 3M(TM) High Tack 76 Spray
Multi-purpose adhesive with high temperature resistance of up to 160 degrees
F (71 degrees C) and strong one-surface bonds. Low-mist, variable-width
spray pattern.

Adhesive, 3M(TM) Super 77 Spray
Fast, aggressive tack for bonding many lightweight materials. Long bonding
range with little or no soak-in. Choice of round or fan pattern nozzle.

Any suggestions? My problem seems to be consistent around 90 degree bends
(Around the wing saddle), I have been able to mix a bit of cabasol to
create a sort of fillet, but with this method I have to wait for
 the surface
coat to cure before laying down my glass. This makes for a 2 session
process. The hot shots I talk to, tend to do a layup in one session. I
have heard that by slightly heating the mold can help reduce air
 bubbles. I
am using 1.5oz cloth followed by two 3oz cloth (Powered Aircraft). I can
provide more info if need be?
