Re: [RCSE] 14MZ - A lot of reinvention of the wheel

2005-05-28 Thread Mike Shellim
The basic argument always seems to
 come down
to It's NOT Multiples and therefore is inferior.

Futaba were careful to build up the hype before launch, so their claims
invite scrutiny. Frankly the discussion on the 14MZ forum bordered on the
hysterical before the system was even launched.

Wonderful. Show of hands. How many fly more than 3 hours in a day?? I
never have. I also have an extra pack in case I ever want to.

Lithium means 'high capacity, low self discharge', so one could reasonably
expect high duration, with no worries about leaving it overnight. The
reality does not live up to expectation - three hours on a charge is very
disappointing. It's not enough for a day's slope soaring, let alone a
weekend comp.

On the RF front, the feature set seems a bit odd. A separate WiFi link for
channel selection seems an incredibly complex solution to changing the Rx
channel. I wonder if the *real* purpose of the Wifi link was to use the Rx
as a 'proxy' scanner?... Because of course the 14 MZ lacks an integrated
scanner with RF interlock. Every software controlled synth Tx should have
this, maybe there's a patent issue which prevents Futaba using their own.

I noticed also that the cold-boot startup time is around 30 seconds - I
think some potential purchasers would find this a complete show-stopper.

Take care. Enjoy your Multiplex as I do my 14MZ.
The basic argument always seems to
 come down
to It's NOT Multiples and therefore is inferior.

Comparison is perfectly valid. It would be nice to hear some constructive
comments from 14MZ owners with some pros and cons, especially if they've
switched from MPX.

Mike

RE: [RCSE] Re:Profi Multiplex 4000

2005-03-13 Thread Mike Shellim
Well, obviously you have profi religion and faith that Ernie won't
retire, or decide not to repair radios in his spare time.

The Evo is *almost* a great soaring radio but for those dumb shared mixers.
Pretty well wrecks it as a serious radio for people (a) have lots of
different models and (b) who want to play with the mixers - which is half
the point of getting an Evo in the first place. I use mine as a 5-memory
radio...

Interestingly, the Evo 7 has totally private mixer defs, so it's unlikely to
be a software issue, more likely a memory limitation. It may be significant
that MPX upped the model memories of the 9 and 12 shortly prior to launch,
if this was at the expense of private mixers, then it was a rare slipup by
MPX.

But the basic architecture is sound. If the Evo had 'privatised' the mixers
and proper 3-state logic switches, I'd use in preference to a 4K for F3F.

The new, albiet overpriced Futaba 14
channel has what looks like the future in hand

As for the Futaba 14MZ, I saw a site with some screenshots and a not very in
depth review. Positive features: Lithium cells, large display, and
CompactFlash memory . But judging by the screenshots, the UI is truly
horrible - forget Windows CE, the graphics look like MSDOS and the dialogs
poorly designed. IMO the 4000 is still the mixer king, the Evo is still the
UI king.

Re: [RCSE] RF Synthesizer

2004-12-22 Thread Mike Shellim
But are the RF Synthesizers really the same as using a specifically
tuned module and crystal? Names like dial-a-crash and
 the like come to mind.

Software controlled synthesisers (e.g. Multiplex Evo HFM-S) are in principle
safer than Xtals.

- the UI is designed to prevent accidental changing of frequency.
- since the actual frequency is displayed on the LCD screen there can be no
confusion.

Modules with rotary switches are another matter.

[RCSE] Fut 14MZ - Same old revolutionary Multiplex ideas

2004-12-14 Thread Mike Shellim
WOW factor alone would be worth it.

With all that computing power and memory, what a wonderful opportunity for
Futaba to develop a truly unlimited architecture like the 4000, married to a
truly elegant easy-to-use interface. However the blurb mentions 'supports 7
wing types' (groan!), which at a stroke indicates that the architecture is
essentially knobbled - if a little less knobbled than last years model.

As regards the programming interface, am I the only one to be underwhelmed
by screen shots on Jason.net?

http://www.jason.net/heli/helimain.htm

Look closely, and there doesn't appear to be any clever thinking as far as
the UI is concerned. The servo ATV, subtrim and rate adjustments are all
scattered among different menus and the screens look as if they've been
designed by a graphically challenged committee (read 'awful'). Even the
relatively cheap Evo which manages to integrate all the servo adjustments in
a simple, attractive screen.

I fear that once the chrome and froth are stripped away, the genuine
innovation lies in the transmission system and 14 fast response channels,
which although technically interesting, are not of great use to the F3X
flyer.

[RCSE] RE: Royal EVO help

2004-07-07 Thread Mike Shellim
 From: Chuck Auerbach [EMAIL PROTECTED]

How can I copy my friends file to add to my file.
The progran only overwrites to my EVO. I can't seem to add
any of his planes to my planes.

Chuck, it's not possible to splice in specific models from another backup.
Another unfortunate consequence of the mixer definitions being global.

[RCSE] 5125 Problem (new)

2004-03-02 Thread Mike Shellim
I've been running a Hitec 5125 on the bench. Unfortunately the neutral
position occasionally jumps by about plus or minus 10 degrees. This and
other symptoms lead lead me to strongly suspect the the pot wiper is
slipping on the shaft.

Before I invalidate the warranty by removing the labels, has anyone opened
up a 5125, if so how how easy it it to reposition the pot assembly?

Thanks

[RCSE] RE: Mini-Ellipse Front Wing Hold-down Modifications?

2003-09-28 Thread Mike Shellim
Hi Jay,

I've been through a few Mini's and the wing retaining peg has been a more or
less constant source of trouble - any ME pilot will tell you similar
stories. The problem is that with any undue stress the fuselage splits at
the peg position, allowing the fuselage to deform and for cracks to
propagate elsewhere.

Stengthening with glass/carbon under the bridge has not worked for me. What
I do now is

(1) epoxy a semicircle of hard balsa about 1/4 - 3/8 inch thick immediately
under the bridge to prevent the fuselage from splitting and to spread the
load to the fuse sides.
(2) remove steel peg altother, and fill in the hole with epoxy/microballons.
Drill a hole in the wing for a second 3mm nylon wing hold down bolt just at
the rear of the old steel peg. The bolt screws into a blind nut fixed to a
1/16 ply plate. the plate is glued under the wings seat, the existing flang
prevents it from being pulled out. The bolt stands proud - I guess it could
be counersunk but it doesn't bother me - anyway you can't see it when it's
flying:)

I have had no further trouble since. Hope this makes sense.

Got a little to wild with my Muller Mini-Ellipse in big air and broke
the front wing hold-down. Anyone, have a good modification for better
front wing hold-down that they could describe or send photo of?

 Thanks,

[RCSE] Re: GUI programming for 3030 TX's

2003-01-11 Thread Mike Shellim
Tord, I'm working on a crude version of the system you describe, for the
3010/3030/4000. It allows you to connect the Tx to a PC via a DSC-type
interface and view virtual servos on screen. You can't program the Tx
remotely (a thankless project without the official MPX documentation, IMO),
or see a virtual aeroplane, but it's a useful tool to test ideas and
familiarise without connecting up real servos.

Current Status: functioning, but needs to be polished up - as usual it's the
final 5% of debugging/development that takes 90% of the time.

Details at http://www.rc-soar.com/servosim

- Mike

Interesting thread this - for a perfect set up the
computer should be connected to your tx, as
with some sims, and then you would have a
virtual model on screen to test ideas on, like the crude
harness, with a servo connected to each channel,
one sometimes is forced to make to get
the wiring right. Neither system is perfect
 but it should help!

RE: [RCSE] Mpx 3030 Programming

2002-07-10 Thread Mike Shellim

OK I think I have the solution.

I have an onboard glow system, on a towplane, that I activate
using an electronic speed control and sw.
5 to turn it on and off. I want to know if I can then use the GX
sw (via the throttle) to switch sw 5 off once past
20% or so throttle and back on again once the throttle comes back
  past 20%.

Instead of S5, you want to use a software switch (Gx), using Throttle
control as the master:

Go to Menu2-Assign-SoftSw. If Throttle is on B then choose B as the master
stick. Choose the switching threshold (20?). You'll now find a new switch
SB in the list of secondary switches. For ESC, specify SB instead of S5.
