Heady stuff!

I'm sure many here are aware already, and hopefully

I did a bit (3.5 hours) of flying today out in Elsinore, Ca. I found myself low (600 feet) patiently working a tiny 100 fpm thermal until it built up enough to get me away again. I really focused on slow(ish) tight slightly slipped turns, and on keeping my head on the head rest, as the G-loading was starting to bug me after about 10 minutes of sustained 45* bank. It worked, and I got complimented on an unlikely-looking "save"

If you would like to see the world-record breaking video of the Extreme going 212 mph, and then 215 mph, you need to follow a new link at:

http://www.mccomposites.com

The band-width demands were too great, so the old link was broken and the new one formed. The old video was 10 meg, the new one is six, but it is streamed so you shouldn't have to wait too long (you don't still have dial up do you?)

Plus the videographer is shilling his wares on the page. But hey what do you want? Building and filming the ultimate _expression_ of R/C soaring to date costs money...

[RCSE] Extreme DS

2003-06-22 Thread Quiet Man
Doug Reel and Kyle Paulson both joined the 190mph+ DS club at Vincent today. They were flying two new 2meter molded DS Extremes, and recording speeds with a radar gun.

They both recorded top speeds of 192,andDoug was "cruising" in the high 180's while talking about the servos etc. and the 100" exxtreme he has on order.

They were flying unballasted at a 22 oz wing loading and the wind was 20 mph. They found a line that produced much higher speeds, but could not get the radar gun to record it, so they were obliged to fly closer and slower, but still managed repeated high 180's and low 190's to 192.

Doug says that the Extreme is the most solid feeling plane he has ever flown DS with, and that it was "easy."

Neither plane suffered any damage from the speed session, although one flap horn became loosened on one plane. These planes should be good for a lot more, just use good servos and linkages!

Considering that conditions were nothing special, when they can get a better angle or a better radar gun 200 mph and more should soon become routine.

I'm very happy for Brian, since he has really busted his butt on this project, and has come up with a plane that is just "born" to do this.

...Of course with a lot of help from Joe Wurts, and Brian is the first to credit Joe's airfoils and planforms. They are the best.

The 100" CNC version should be insane...

2002-05-27 Thread Quiet Man
Some of you may remember the Easter Week Massacre at Laguna Niguel. That was when a certain person who doesn't like R/C gliders allegedly was shooting the planes with an air-rifle and a wrist rocket. Despite the fact that he is now being to treated to a party by the Superior Court of California he is now apparently up to more shennanigans. Even though I had just got my invitation to his party, a very nice blue one labelled "SUBPEONA-CRIMINAL" with the theme being "The People of The State of California, Plaintiff VS. Valbuena, Stephen," he still felt the need for more fun and games. Must be his patriotic spirit.
Hisnew partygame at the slope is "shoot down the gliders with spurious RF signals." Today we had numerous unexplained obvious interference caused crashes on several frequencies. A phone call was made. A scanner was brought out. Yep, VERY strong signal on latest frequency to be affected, no TX's on. No immediate action by us, waited for more data. Crash, Crash. Police called, more fun. If this continues it will be the People of the United States of America VS. Moron, Psychotic. I wonder if he realizes that deliberate destruction of property and endangering of persons by interfering with FCC controlled airwaves is a FEDERAL offense, and possibly a felony. Doubt it.
Be aware that if you fly at the LN site you need a cel phone to call the police with as well as your planes and sunscreen. Hopefully this will be resolved quickly.

Would anyone care to most their feedback, building and flying experiences with DAW's Ka6 EPP 3 meter glider?
A lot of fun on the slope, flys suprising well in suprisingly little lift. Must be flown like most large scale planes, smoothly and with care to maintain airspeed and energy. A well-flown one in decent lift can put on quite a show of graceful linked aerobatics, much the same as a glass model would.
Care must be exercised on winch launch, as the wings and airframe are somewhat flexible compared to glass. Flutter or other odd behavior can occur. Same with prolonged, steep dives.
It aerotows well, and thermals well, when well flown.
Building one is straightforward, but having prior EPP experience would be a very big help. It is more work then you would expect, not hard, just a lot of sanding and shaping to do one right.
An enormous plus is it's durability. It can only be compared to other EPP planes, and is able to survive in the foamy wing cluttered environment found on many slopes nowadays.

[RCSE] Real slope combat (the Easter Week Massacre)

2002-04-05 Thread Quiet Man
Apparently inspired by events in the middle east and New York a local homeowner in Laguna Niguel has redefined slope combat for us. He set himself up with a high-powered air rifle and a good vantage point for sniping (his back yard), and started banging away at our planes. Due to his location and the wind we didn't figure out what was going on until three of our planes had had holes blasted through them. A particularly solid hit on a JW pulled the elevon partially off and caused it to crash down the hill. My Wizard merely had a nice chunk of foam and skin blown out of the middle of one wing and an Obechi-covered Hobby People Euro-thingy had the basswood leading edge shattered by a round that passed through the wind at an angle, entering the bottom about an inch behind the LE and exiting through it. After we spotted the shooter, he acknowledged us by wanging a round off the top of our frequency board shelter. At this point we landed, moved off to a safe distance and dialed 9-11. Three cop cars arrived, and everyone got to talk to the police. If anything interesting evolves from all this I'll let you all know. In the meantime if you fly at the Laguna Niguel slope be aware that there is a more than slightly unstable dude, about 6' 2" tall and 240 pounds (big-belly) with longish black hair and a SERIOUS dislike for glider guys. He lives in/shoots from the house immediately to the south of the park overlooking the slope.

A couple of problems might be getting the actual code parameters, but the author might be willing to help. The other problem is that the studies available don't really modelthe liftwe fly in with HLG's. Technically we utilize "surface layer plumes" for the most part, not what the "big boys" consider thermals. [RCSE] The Pro's quick CG test...

2001-08-22 Thread Quiet Man
If anyone is curious as to what Joe Wurts, Daryl Perkins,
et all will commonly do to "check" the CG of a plane when
you hand them the Transmitter; it's this...
They will trim straight and level at some reasonable "floaty"
speed, then roll inverted. If the plane continues happily or
climbs/descends onlyslighty, then it's close to where it "should" be.
If it noticably dives/speeds up then it's too far forward.
This may only work best with performance oriented designs which
have little or no decaloge, or full-flying stabs. I'm speculating because
I've never tried this test with a trainer.
None of the "best" guys that I fly with a lot pay much attention
to this or any other "test" they simply play with the CG till the
plane is "right". "Right" by the way can change from flight to
flight depending on the task. For example slope racing can benefit from
an extreme back CG because the plane is in close in where you can
see it well and needs to turn a lot. F3B distance on the other hand can
be problematic for back CG's as the plane may be a mile away while
you are trying to fly it accurately. Even worse distance wiseis F3J.
However for thermal events the CG can be farther forward without making
you much less competitve,a back CG isjust not as important to the task.

[RCSE] Mantis Thread

2001-03-01 Thread Quiet Man

At the risk of interupting the fascinating
threads on what a particular airplane looks like,
I would like to give a briefing on my impressions
of the Mantis.

I have flown two examples, and would classify
them as "in the ballpark" for US TD competition.

You could certainly win a local regional or the
NATS with one, given ordinary conditions and
contest structure.

After flying them, however I would not consider
one for myself, and can guarantee you that you
won't see any of the "name" pilots flying one.

The tail booms flex when attempting a hard
launch, the geometry is not optimal, and the
planform is not optimized, plus they are BAGGED
for heavens sake!
The planform/geometry problems were really
apparent when I tested a Mantis side-by-side with
my #2 Psyko, turning circles at low altitude in
light lift.
The mantis does not turn as efficiently*.

*I have to say, in defense of the Mantis, that
the two i have flown were not set up to what I
would consider even close to "optimal".

There are many readily available planes on the
market with superior performance, from the
Emerald, to the Hera/Artemis/Stratos style
planes, to what I still fly, the Psyko.

These are simply MY OPINIONS AND MY IMPRESSIONS.
YOU should go do whatever the hell you want,
unless of course you would like your name on a
T-shirt someday.

Re: [RCSE] Cool aviation software fun stuff

2001-02-28 Thread Quiet Man

Hi Jim,

Cool site John, tnx.

You're welcome.

How's the glider ticket coming?

Got my private pilot's license last November,
am working on my commercial license, should be
done by the middle of summer.

Just about to put down a deposit on a 304CZ, 15
meter class plane, gotta get the wifey to buy in
on the deal, however. She's having difficulty
with the idea of me playing with "toys" that cost
nearly $50 grand.

Go figure.

John.

Re: [RCSE] F3J Penetration Comparison

2001-02-19 Thread Quiet Man

Ronald writes:

Should I get the time to cross 100' in calm
wind?

Get the time to cross with the least altitude
lost.

Let's say the model loses 5 feet in 100 at 25
mph.

that would be:

20:1 Lift/Drag (L/D) @ 25 mph (best L/D speed)

The equation to figure out how far you can go
(penetrate) into a headwind is:

(L/D)*(LDspeed - headwind speed)
  -- = actual L/D
   ( L/D speed)

Actual L/D is the models glideslope into a given
wind. You want the biggest number you can get.

Wing loading will raise the best L/D speed, so
try to test models at similar wing loadings.
You want a model with a high best L/D speed at
the lightest wing loading, which would indicate
that the model will be less sensitive to wind
effects at a given loading. (play with the above
equation to get a feel for this.

Beware selecting a model based primarily on
optimizing one variable. Unless of course it
launches the highest.

I would love to see some numbers on this!

Remember to the plane(s) there is no such
thing as an "upwind" or "downwind" leg.
The towpilot is most likely slowing the plane
down on the downwind leg, since from a
ground-speed perspective the plane appears
to speed up when travelling down-wind.
Let it! It has to!

lider would go low behind the
owplane and start whipping from side to side.

That would be the wake. Ether climb above it or
drop below it, or even fly out to the sides.
The side to side weave is a classic "figure
eight"
caused by bouncing from one tip vortice to the
other, most likely.

With practice it is possible to "box" the wake,
flying all ther way around it, pull up through it
or drop down through it at will. Just don't stay
in it.

towplane would stall and

See first paragraph. Fly faster.

Hope this helps!

[RCSE] F3F race july 29th at Laguna Niguel

2000-07-30 Thread Quiet Man

Here are the results of the F3F race at Laguna
Niguel.
Conditions weren't great, as the times will
attest, but
other than a 1/2 hour intermission while we
waited for
some sort of atmospheric system to go inland, the
wind was reasonably consistant.

It was fairly cool, and MUCH nicer than the
searing
conditions inland. We were able to fly 4 rounds
with
16 pilots, and had no problems to speak of.

Very smooth. I had never CD'd anything before,
so
I didn't fly, as I anticipated having to be
available for
"stuff" during the contest. Turns out I could
have flown,
no problemo. GREAT bunch of guys, some really
polished flying, and generally lots of fun.

I will be hosting more, and I am thinking that
there is real
potential in F3F to resurrect slope-racing on the
west coast.
..I know today when I went out, there was a
bigger than usual
bunch, and the "buzz" was all "let's do it again"
, "let's practice"
etc. etc.

Conditions dictated using TD or very light F3F
ships, planes
like the Hera or my Psyko were ideal. A large
variety of planes
were flown, and everyone had fun, regardless.

Placings, four rounds with no throw-out:

1. Brian Buass 3834.8 Hera/Artemis
2. Larry Jolly 3778.5 Hera/Artemis
3. Jonathan Albert 3634.0 Vindicator
4. Tom Copp3602.1 a 2meter
5. Ken Dillon 3566.0 Hera?
6. Chris Wynaught 3476.7 Vindicator
7. Dan Field 3328.9 Thermal plane
8. Nathan Woods3251.5 Hera?
9. Scott Southall 3215.2 CR Raider
10. Duane Laine 3200.9 Molded F3B Eagle
11. Frank Cavasos 3115.7 no idea
12. Scott Magnar3000.2 Vindicator
13. Dave Sanders2933.4 DAW EPP Ka-6, 1/4 scale
14. Bobby Wilson2706.9 Modified multiplex thingy
15. Ian Sanders 1936Patton EPP Be5a? 30" fighter
16. Bob Lenard 786.1 Apex II

In spite of the light lift, several pilots
managed to
whack the hill, and/or crack up thier planes
landing them.
This was the cause of some of the sub-3000
scores,
either by getting a zero flight (no throw-outs!)
or forcing a
switch to back-up planes or withdrawal.

Fast time of the day was Larry Jolly, with a
"blistering"
57 second run. Most all of the flights were in
the 60-80
second range.
