[RCSE] Re: OT: Can anything be done with "frosted" headlight covers?
I'm sure Johnson's rubbing compound, toothpaste and WD40, and other combinations works fine for mild scratches, discoloration, etc., but the etching I'm talking about is a white glaze over the surface of the cover that is dense enough you can't see through, like an acid etch. I know from others who have tried that the sandpaper/polish worked while the rubbing compound didn't. Stan In a message dated 09/22/2006 10:39:35 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, the captain writes: Too bad to hear that polishing compound doesn't work on headlight covers. How am I going to break the news to my Mazda that the clear headlights it received when I polished them just last weekend with Johnson's rubbing compound - is nothing but an illusion. [RCSE] Re: OT: Can anything be done with "frosted" headlight covers?
Stan, This topic came up recently on one of the car forums I frequent. One guy had success using very fine wet/dry sandpaper (used wet), the same stuff they use in auto body painting, progressively finer, and finally polishing compound. The sandpaper is available in Pep Boys and the like, and grit rating is in the thousands (don't remember the exact values). Mine are etched from our desert sun so I was going to try this soon, and I figure the worst that will happen is I screw them up and have to replace with new ones anyway! There are products available at the auto stores for polishing plastic headlight lenses, but they are not aggressive enough to get rid of the etching. Just so Gordy doesn't blast me for a non-soaring post, I suppose you can use this technique for getting rid of frosted canopies on your scale sailplanes ;-) The other Stan In a message dated 09/21/2006 4:37:32 P.M. [RCSE] Re: Text only AOL posts - it can be done
Al, I haven't post in a long time, since switching to OS X anyway, so here is a test of aol on OS X. How's it look, any HTML junk on the end? Stan In a message dated 8/8/05 12:17:15 PM, Al Nephew writes: On my last post regarding this topic I expressed ignorance about the Mac. So just now I tested a Mac post using AOL 5.0. It sent only text with no modifications needed. However, my older Mac G4 uses OS 9.2, so I can't run the latest AOL on it--the newer AOL is so much better that I do email on a PC until the day when I give in and go to OS X. Probably the same (i.e., no problem) with OS X, but someone running that might like to report on it. When I got back from a trip last week and was checking old RCSE digests, I noted that there was a discussion a week or two ago regarding this, with the apparently widely held belief expressed that AOL can't suppress HTML, thus printing text followed by gibberish which takes several screens of clicking until the reader gets past it. In fact, if HTML can be eliminated from an AOL post by right clicking and selecting "text" with a PC, it should be possible with any email program. Al Nephew Duluth, MN
[RCSE] Servo on 12V question, slightly OT
Hello everyone, I'm trying to rig up a vent door in a kit-car so I can open and close the vent remotely. Its would be tough to run a stiff cable to the door due to its location, so I was thinking of using a heavy duty landing gear servo located at the door, and a simple on/off switch under the dash to activate the servo. My question is what I would need to do to run the servo off the 12 volt car system? My electronics knowledge is limited but I'm do ok with a soldering iron! Thanks in advance for any suggestions. [RCSE] Best 2m electric?
Hi guys, I haven't been flying as much as I use to, but when I do, I find my little 1.5m Koleos electric is the plane I grab. Its small and light enough I can fly from the small field behind my house where my larger electrics aren't comfortable. The Koleos is getting pretty worn out, and I am looking for something slightly bigger, around 2m. What's available as an electric in this size? Anything with AVA-type construction (very light) and rudder/elevator/spoiler? TIA Stan Sadorf

Fortunately most of us have two eyes so each eye fills in the blind spot for the other eye. In a message dated 6/25/03 4:29:31 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: There is also a blind spot near the center on your retina where you can't see it all. I believe it's the spot where all the nerves and blood vessles enter the eye. You can demonstrate this to yourself pretty easily. Take a blank sheet of paper. Take a pen and make a dot in the center. Now make anothr dot about 2 inches to the right side of the first. Hold the paper a foot or two in front of your face and close your left eye. Now use your right eye to stare at the left-most dot. Slowly move the piece of paper toward your eye and keep staring directly at the left dot. At some point, you will see the dot on the right completely vanish. As you continue moving the paper closer, the dot will re-appear on the other side of the blind spot. I still find it amazing that your brain sees the world as one continuous image, when it is in fact, not. Now, imagine how this will effect looking at a tiny dot of a model airplane on a big blue background.

At that distance a >120 inch span plane is only subtending 0.12 degrees of your visual field. >That's a VERY small target for your eye. Here's another way to look at this. The 20/20 line on the eye chart in your eye doctor's office has letters that subtend one minute of arc each, and since there are 60 minutes of arc in one degree, the 20/20 letter is about 0.017 degrees "tall". (I just measured the 20/20 E in my exam room and it is about 6mm high, and is about 15 feet from the exam chair. Yes, its a slow afternoon here.) So, assuming Bill's calculations above are correct, the sky is clear, the plane is dark against the bright sky, the wing chord is reasonably thick, and the pilot has 20/20 vision, the sailplane should be visible at that altitude. Just don't look away from it or you might not see it again! I lost my 4 meter Discus a few weeks ago in Visalia at a much lower altitude because the sky was very hazy, the wings were white, and I looked away for just an instant. Expensive lesson! I recently had a cataract removed from my right eye, and am going to have to do the left one in the not too distant future. I recently studied for, and passed the exam to get an Amateur Radio License, (Technician). One of the test questions concerned the effects of RF heating and stated that one effect of this rg heating is, (you guessed it) cataracts. I'm wondering, if we as modelers, present a greater proportion of cataract trouble then people who don't spend their liesure time with a VHF transmitter 2 feet from their eyes. Wondering. bc (KG4TFF) Bill, I think our long term exposure to the sun's UV is a much greater factor in cataract development than the RF exposure from our transmitters. Sunglasses that absorb all the UV and a wide brim hat are the best defense. This is especially true after a person has had their cataract removed because now more of the UV can get to the back of the eye which can contribute to macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss in the elderly population. Finished fiberglass fuse with obechi sheeted wings. $1000 Prisma motorglider, Roebers kit, 4 meter span, scale looking motorglider with a fiberglass fuse and obechi sheeted wing and tail surfaces, taildragger, includes a nearly new OS 91 four-stroke glow engine and mount, landing gear and wheels, accessories. NIB but a lot of work done. $600 Non-Scale stuff, all are new-in-box (NIB): EPP'ee by Studio B, 48 inch span, early foamy kit. $25 plus shipping Whipit handlaunch by Global (Hobby Shack), 1.5 meter span, fiberglass fuse, poplar sheeted wings, eastern European kit, great quality but too heavy for HL competition, probably would make a good light air sloper. $75 plus shipping RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Cross Country questions
Hi guys, I attended the ISSA/LSF task day at Merrill Brady's place in S. California last weekend, and had a great time flying cross-country. Its the first chance I have had to fly cross country since getting my Level 5 goal there several years ago. Anyway, are there any other regularly scheduled cross country events in central/southern California? I seem to remember that the Thousand Oaks club hosted a yearly event at one time. Also, are there any kits or fuselages produced for cross country planes? The only one I am familar with is RnR's SBXC. How about poly vs. full house ships? I would think that a stable poly ship would be an advantage at the limits of vision, but RnR's sailplane seems to be the dominate plane at events as far as numbers are concerned. Are there weight and wingspan limitations for official events? I have a scale ship that would be a great cross country plane but it has a 6 meter span and weighs about 15 pounds. [RCSE] dihedral question
Hi guys, I just finished bagging a wing for an old fuse and tail feathers that were laying around. I intended the wing to be used for RES class, so it is polyhedral. The trouble is that when assembled, the wing looks flat and may not have enough polyhedral. I just used the TLAR ("that looks about right") method to determine the poly. I'll list the specifics below. Does the wing need more poly? If so, I can do one of two things: kick up the tip panels, or add ailerons. Can I add enough poly just by raising the tips? Thanks in advance! Wing specifics: 120 inch total span, each wing half is 60 inches. each half is triple tapered, first panel is 10 inch constant chord (24 in long), second panel tapers to 7.75 inches (also 24 in long), third panel tapers to 5.5 inches (12 inches long). First panel has 3 degrees dihedral (wing rod is 6 degrees), second panel has 6 degrees of poly relative to the first panel, third panel is flat with the second panel. I could add poly to this third panel if needed. Thanks again for any advice, Stan Sadorf [EMAIL PROTECTED] "designing without a license" RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
