RE: [RCSE] What's the big deal about 2.4? - Lag...okay now we
Lag time? This is starting to sound like the argument the “experts” spouted regarding muzzle breaks on firearms. Those esteamed gun scribes maintained the projectile, theoretically, was long gone before puny human reflexes could possibly detect any reduction in recoil. They were able to get away with that opinion until more shooters actually tried using muzzle breaks as they became more available. Now these pundits are “experts” in some other area, maybe response time. My own limited tests, which admittedly are not very scientific, seem to show a convincing difference in both smoothness as well as response time. The only two planes I have duplicates of are Litesticks. Placed side by side, with identical throws, voltage, servos, etc the surfaces show a real difference between 2.4 MHz and 72 MHz. I also tried it with 27 MHz and the response seemed the same as with 72 MHz. Dennis in NH, no longer at the Kittery Trading Post. “reorganized” and out the door after 18 yrs. Re: [RCSE] casting lead
My God, are you guys hallucinating? Calm down and take a deep breath! Sure lead is toxic if you get it into the body but dangerous fumes are only produced if you boil it. We are just melting amounts under 10 pounds here! I read about encapsulating it in epoxy and that is fine but you guys are making it sound like you can get poisoned by bad air or something. The bad air comes from the epoxy! This isn't a religion and it's not something evil, it's just another useful metal for people with a smidgen of common sense to use. After all, we are not eating it or sticking our nose in the pot, are we? It is probably less dangerous than the results of your last burrito in a closed vehicle and certainly less dangerous than the mercury amalgam fillings in your teeth. So don't eat it, lick it and please wash your hands before you smoke that cigar and you and your neighbors will be perfectly safe. Millions of lead bullet casters have been doing this for ages in perfect safety. It's just another useful tool we use if the proper precautions are taken. Incidentally, there is one major risk to be watchful of. No moisture should EVER come in contact with the molten lead. One small drop of sweat from your brow falls into the pot it will demonstrate just how powerful a steam explosion can be as it plates you and your surrounding area with lead foil. We were wearing safety glasses, weren't we? Contrary to some reports I've read, unless you are melting an iron bathtub full for the keel of your sailboat, it is seldom more that a real eye-opener and very messy. It's happens way too fast to blink and the foil sticks to everything like spray paint. So, know your limitations and use some common sense and you should be fine. Nobody is forced to play with it if they don't want to but a little intelligent thought is a useful commodity, hearsay and old wives tales are not. Dennis in NH and yes I have been tested for lead in my system and no there is none. Hello: As you will hear from others, lead fumes are really bad news. [RCSE] Why are folks unsubscribing?
Why are folks unsubscribing? It's probably because they use TEXT ONLY format, (the requested and proper way for this type of forum) and are very, very tired wading thru HTML, headers, TO: lists, and other unusable garbage. AOL isn't controllable, according to users. Cant turn MIME off? Can't turn Gordy off either, come to think of it! Look guys! Quit blaming AOL for your laziness. Once upon a time it was true you couldn't turn off HTML but that argument no longer applies. Simply highlight the passage you want to resend and when you are done with your message, Right click on your mouse and an info block will appear on your screen. Select the one that reads compose as plan text and you have made us happy. To summarize; Do not hit reply or reply to all Highlight only what is necessary to carry the conversation. Right click and select the plane text option. Sigh! You do have to do this for each message you send as AOL does revert back to HTML each time. Dumb but true. Re: [RCSE] Why are so many guys unsubscribing?
In my case I subscribe to the digest version of 10 or 12 lists. I don't read them on my employers time, I do it after work, at home. So when a particular group is just too inept, too dumb or too inconsiderate to simply highlight a small part of the text before hitting the reply or worse yet, the reply all key, all of us get pages and pages of repeated text. The argument that I should simply hit the delete key is a pretty P poor response. It's not about the delete key, it's about the time. Dumping the list might be an option but just occasionally, there is a jewel of an idea that would be a pity to miss. Lately, some of you have been resending the whole volume over and over for up to five repeats. Count the little chevrons in the right margin sometime to see how many times the same message has been resent. It gets a little tedious wading through all that just to discover they are discussing the effect of a fat gut on launch height or something equally esoteric. All in all this is probably just another waste of time and space. Those of us who are considerate enough not to do it know who we are and those who insist on doing it probably don't have a clue and never will. I would bet they are the same people who do not know what their turn signals are for or how to take your turn at a four-way stop sign or even figure out what a yield sign is for. Sigh! [RCSE] Re full size towline
The SSA soaring manual states 150 to 200 feet long. The glider will be flying before the airplane has enough airspeed to leave the ground. The sailplane pilot will have quite a bit of forward pressure on the stick to hold the glider within about 5 feet of the ground. If the glider is too high then the airplane cannot take off. A.B. All true but consider the BV-40would not have taken off at 40 to 80 kts like a recreational sailplane. It was designed to dive at over 850 kph to accomplish it's mission. (And before we get too wrapped around this "glamorous" idea lets not forget that wasto kill allied airmen)As such had a very much higher wing loading. I think you have to consider it in the prospective of the ME-163 and it's tow plane, the BF-110 and it's 100 meters or 320 feet of steel tow rope. Re: [RCSE] High Altitude Glider
I agree, There was one time that a Cesna was flying around our field watching my SB-XC in the air, after about 10 min. of his persistent fly around's of the field ( aprox 300+ acer's ) It can get pretty dicey at times. In the 60's the old Arc's field situated about seven miles from Pittsburgh International had the airliners passing directly overhead at about 500 feet which always made me nervous and a little disorientated to boot! I found it hard not to watch the airliners. The field had been provided by the state as part of a noise park program and was situated at the top of a hill with the land around it strip-mined away. Sorta like a plateau. You could see them coming from a long ways off but it was still unnerving to me. The worst case I have ever seen occurred a few years ago, (70's), at a W.W.I contest at a full size field in NY. A Piper Cherokee began circling around at about 100 foot altitude while numerous large models were in the air doing a mass fly by. He simply came in over the trees and joined the left hand pattern with the models! The field layout with trees surrounding the field left no options for the models. The boys at the field were simulating flack by shooting off bird popper loads from a 12 gauge at the time and from appearances that is what finally caused him to shear off and go away. Three times at the same two day jamboree Cassia's tried to land on the closed runway. Big X's at each end and a runway full of people notwithstanding. These boy's had flaps down and were well into the approach at around 100 feet before they took the wave off and went away. One of them went around and tried again. Probably something about the big X's and the guy waving the big red flag he didn't understand, I suppose. Dennis in NH RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Security issues and R/C models
Studying the NRA as a political model is not a bad idea And why not? I love to hear the NRA bashers rant on about the effect we have on the government, our government. I and thousands like me ARE the NRA. Just private citizens who happen to believe that freedom IS protected by the private ownership of firearms. It ain't about duck hunting, Mr. Kerry! We who know something about firearms must always fight against those who act out of ignorance of and prejudice toward firearms. We do this by calling and writing our representatives about issues that effect us. Isn't that precisely what citizens are expected to do in a representative government? Who could perceive this as somehow bad? I was taught in civics class many years ago that that was what representative government was all about. Our elected officials can't represent us if they don't know where we stand on issues up for a vote. It really does not matter whether it is a phony semiautomatic assault rifle issue or depriving us of model airplane flying areas, it is up to each of us to be informed about the issues and inform our representatives how we expect them to vote for us. The real power in our system is in the voting out of office those who can't bring themselves to represent our views. It certainly worked with Gore. We expect elected politicians to represent us, not vote their conscience once in office when they feel safe. You may hate the NRA for your own reasons but the example is still worth studying. Re: [RCSE] Security issues and R/C models
but the commander of Andrews AFB came to the conclusion that it was better to have concerned people (eyes and ears) around then not. (Especially now when are forces have been stretched so thin Andrews AFB has replaced the Air Police at the gates with civilian contract personnel). Many of the club members are military or ex-military and have security training. Eliminating the terrorist threat is unrealistic I used that same argument at Pease Tradeport but the FAA rep. didn't buy it because he flew models as a kid and knew how dangerous they were. Besides, the radios would cause interference and the planes could carry cameras. If I were interested in taking someone out via RC, I'd use one of the new jets with a true turbine, and an onboard video camera setup. At 200+ mph, I think it would be more effective. Aren't we forgetting someone still must have the skill to put such a model together and actually pilot it? Not that I'd ever fly one I prefer aerobatics and soaring to turning big loops and circles, which is just about ALL their owners do with them. Sounds suspiciously like the famous argument, to paraphrase; When they came after the power fliers I wasn't concerned because my sailplane were quit so I said nothing. Then they came after the combat models but I fly slope so I didn't protest. But when they banned all flying models it was too late because there was no one left to help me. [RCSE] AF1
I am truly amazed how easily you boys are willing to surrender your freedom in the name of security. What possible security are we talking about. Can your toy do any damage to his plane? Can you even reach it? Are you in his flight path or even within miles of it? Can you carry anything as a payload worth the effort to be reasonably able to pose a threat? Is anything and every thing some nitwit in Washington dreams up now a threat to real aircraft? (I had a conversation with a buffoon from the FAA who flew model planes as a child and understood just how dangerous they were. That was his rational for closing a field that had been used for years for model flying). There comes a time when you have to pull your head out and just say enough is enough, this is just too stupid to put up with anymore. There are millions of Moslems out there that hate and detest infidels and nobody will ever be 100% safe from them all. Yes, I know not all Moslems are terrorists but it seems a pretty good bet that nearly all the latest crop of terrorists have been Moslems. It's a pretty sure bet that we can't stop them all and that they have also been here all along so isn't it time to just face reality and concede a little danger is inevitable? We have to be smarter than them not dumber. Smart precautions not stupid ones need to be implemented. We have to trust each other a little more and be willing to accept responsibility and not just dumbly hand it over to unqualified people just because they are in positions of authority. Now that the secret service has decided to ask nicely for you to stop playing with your plastic toy plane instead of shooting you down it's all OK is it? For the record, there is no such thing as asking nicely! The implied power and oppression of the government is behind them. Refuse and they will carry it to whatever end they can justify. These tactics can be implemented only when out of the of public scrutiny. Most cannot stand the light of day. Publicize them and they melt away. Ridicule is a powerful tool when applied selectively, and I mean by name, down to the local level. Any reasonably intelligent person should be able to assess the threat level of a model plane as opposed to a missile and take the appropriate action. Each time they get away with it another precedent is set and more freedom is eroded away. On a certain level I could almost understand the hysteria when they closed the 30 mile circle around Salt Lake City airport during the Olympics. It being right after 911 and so nearly everyone went along with it but it set the precedent. Now, little by little, we are handing the security types our freedom. Is it because of some misguided sense of duty or is it just plan out and out fear. I'm sorry, but I cannot sit quietly by and watch it go down the toilet. I did not spend 24 years of my life protecting this country to see it handed away by liberal yuppies so afraid to loose their little area of interest that they are willing to give up mine for what they perceive as security. You eat the elephant one little bite at a time and you surrender your freedoms the same way. It worked in Germany, Russia, China, Cuba, England, Australia and every other country that needed more security than freedom. Can't happen here? You had better take a look at what homeland security has already cost you. Motherland and Fatherland were already in use, it seems. Maybe we really are a Nation of Cowards as the book title suggests. I was checking web for info on the original Wright brothers engine, which they built themselves, for the 1903 Flyer we celebrated this week. Look guys, not to take anything away from the Wright brothers but in the interest of historical accuracy, they DID NOT build their own engine. Their mechanic, Charlie E. Taylor built it. I must have heard this they built their own engine themselves myth one hundred times this week alone on TV and we all know how accurate TV journalism is. Yes, it came out of their own shop just like most of the inventions of Edison came out of his own shop. His employees came up with the ideas and he, (they) got the credit. [RCSE] aileron tip design
Has anyone ever cut their ailerons straight out to the end of the wing rather than simply notching them a couple of inches from the end?? Arent we about to reinvent the wheel again? Im no aerodynamic expert but I have gone through the stage of running them all the way to the end and then reading of the aerodynamic advantages of stopping short so thats what Ive been doing for around the last 20 years or so. Other than not ripping them off on the ground or the foliage so easily I understood the advantage of stopping short to be a smoother flow of air over the tip when deflected. Smoother flow equaling more efficient flight and also quieter flight on my designs at least. Maybe there is a theoretical leverage advantage to ailerons carried out to the tip with a smaller deflection needed for initiating and maintaining the bank angle but I was always led to believe it was out weighed by the extra drag created by a more turbulent flow pattern that resulted. Perhaps whats needed is an inverse tapered platform stopping just before the tip. Dennis in NH

It=92s bad=20 enough people do not edit their response to eliminate every post, = header, and=20 footer ever posted in the thread or take the time to reply ONLY to the = list=20 rather than every person who has ever posted on that thread. Now we =get=20 treated to MSN and auto replies. Oh well. [RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #1993
Aren't we talking about laminating film foe things like ID cards? Dennis I can envision, for instance, a mylar-like film of 0.030" or 0.050" in thick
[RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #1602
What is going on? The last two issues have been the header and the rest of the text solid black with some addresses at the bottom. Changing the background color results in no message either. RE: [RCSE] NSP
Call it ... 15 minutes of glory Just kidding Sal. I ordered and received a kit from NSP as fast as any other company just last month. Packed great and with the right instructions too. Great service. Re: [RCSE] CL-DSing or Model Aviation Soaring Column
Dan--Sometime during WW2, I think Jim Walker brought out an unpowered U/C, that was flown with a fishing pole--the lines running thru the loops on the pole. The weight in the nose was plaster of paris. I flew one of these, I did that in '48 or '49 too. Seem to remember it was a built up P-84 by Burkley(???) that I got from AHC. Re: [RCSE] Fellow baggers beware
It seems the new formulation for 3M 77 spray adhesive has acetone as the main ingredient. Anyone looking for the original formula of 3M77 doesn't have to read the small print on the can. You can just has to look at the cap. The old can has an off center hole in the cap top with the nozzle clipped into it on the outside while the new can has a smooth cap. I mention this because I found some solid black cans with acetone as the main ingredient as well. Dennis in NH RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Bass vs. Spruce? The Results are In......
If Howard Hughes would have used Bass instead of Spruce, what would he have named the plane? Certainly not the The Spruce Goose. Sorry, the term spruce goose was coined by a US Senator. Hughes plane was constructed primarily of birch plywood. Dennis in NH RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Send subscribe and unsubscribe requests to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [RCSE] Futaba transmitters/Hitec Spectra modules
BTW, just to throw a bit more gas on the fire, apparently, Futaba has never actually certified (or whatever they call it) any of their module radios with the transmitter modules. This is currently the hot topic of conversation on the rec.models.rc.air newsgroup. Might be a case of there being something we just don't understand about the certification process or more ominous, that question you shouldn't ask if you can't afford to hear the answer. [RCSE] Harley's comment on RDS
I have no idea if that is a significant value, but it seems minor compared to the other sources of drag. Again, IMO. I'm from Missouri... :) Wow! Lets see, Rads makes the plane quieter. Quieter means less drag and that means higher efficiency. That means you stay up longer, cover more ground from whatever height, launch higher, go faster, etc. Just goes to show ya, you can lead a mule to waterDennis in New Hampshire where Rads means I don't tear off horns on the branches. [RCSE] Re: Supplier of powdered lead?
IMHO, the stuff you really want to look for is called Cerro-Bend. It is almost as heavy as lead and it melts at temps lower than boiling water, if memory serves. Don't have any other info. BobCERROSAFE is used in the machine and gunsmithing trades to cast impressions of areas that are hard to measure. I have been using it for decades to do chamber cast of firearms. You can buy it from Brownells, (641) 623-5401 or go to WWW.brownells.com , click on products and use their search engine to find CERROSAFE. Make sure to click on details for info on the proper use of this product. IMNSHO It looks like lead and rubs off on everything like graphite. Messy to use but useful. [RCSE] Bungee-monster question
What type of grip/release devices are folks out there using for bungee-monsters? Suggestions? Richard, Got to an archery store and buy a bow release to use with the loop of piano wire you imbed into the tail of your plane. [RCSE] AMA and the NATS
Things to remember: A) This is my personal web page, no ads on it, it's free to view, I make no Steve, don't try to educate them. They probably lead pathetically unimportant lives and just crave the attention to make themselves feel like they are worth something. They act like unruly, spoiled children and in fact could be for all I know. It's like trying to teach a pig to dance. Wastes your time and irritates the pig. They do not want to know. They are what I call "Ignorant and proud of it" They "know" it all already and are probably incapable of conscience thought. How they "feel" about a subject passes for rationality so don't try to confuse them with facts as they simply are incapable of comprehending them. They populate both side of any issue but it's absurdly obvious that certain causes seem to attract the lunatic fringe with more time than brains. If they persist I usually advise them to grow up, evolve or get a glass belly button so they can see out. But, of course, they don't heed it because they already have the "right" opinion. One last point, statistically, every day on the street more than half of the people you see have less than normal intelligence. Kind of explains our government, legal system, whiners, nit-pickers, and concepts like "politicly correctness," (offensive markings on scale planes), etc. Lowest common denominator and all that, I suppose. Sorry for the sad rant and back to repairing my Red Herring. Dennis Karoleski in New Hampshire RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] And now for something really important - Poison Oak
Re: [RCSE] And now for something really important - Poison OakAbout 45 years ago I got into a wrestling match with my brother while swimming and we ended up in a patch of poison ivy. We both got 100% coverage, eyelids, rear ends, and all. I haven't been able to get a reaction since, not that I would want to. Every once in a while I rub a leaf into a small spot on my forearm just to see if I am still immune. I used to demonstrate the effect of nettle on the skin to YMCA camp attendees and after one summer I was no longer effected by that either. It was a really good lesson on plants to avoid. You rubbed it in and in a few seconds poison ivy like bumps would appear and it would itch badly. In a few minutes the itch would subside and after about five minutes the rash would disappear.
