[RCSE] So, having read the 2.4 Articles in this Month's RCSD, What's your 2.4 opinion?

2007-11-27 Thread Keith Blair
I really appreciated the information on Advanced Range Testing. While I've
had mostly good luck (yes - it really is 'luck') with 72MHz, the expense and
horror stories of 2.4 have kept me away. With this article, a realistic
analysis process seems possible which would address the reception problems.

Now it's just a matter of expense...

[RCSE] So, having read the 2.4 Articles in this Month's RCSD, What's your 2.4 opinion?

2007-11-26 Thread BCLERX
I've been on 2.4 since September. No problems. Flew on 2.4 at the Visalia
contest and everything worked perfect (JR9303). I plan on flying the F3J world
champs next year on 2.4. I guess that means I'm sold on the technology. I think
I'll be posting some VHF stuff for sale soon (real cheap).

One point does need to be made and that is the receiver installation will
impact the range performance. For this reason, it is important to read the
instructions and to carefully range check a new installation (and periodically
double check it). There is a small glitch counter that records the lost
frames
of information during a particular flight. Actually, the receiver itself
records the performance data and the counter just reads the info. You can
improve
your receiver installation and see data from not only the main receiver, but
the aux receivers as well. I've seen at least one, (slightly problematic)
installation that was improved big time by just moving the aux Rx a couple
inches
to a new location.

I've been flying the 2.4 in a Zenith 3.7 It has a CF fuse with a fiberglass
nose. I helped the other Joe (Joe Rodriguez) install a 2.4 receiver in
his Artemis Light for the Visalia contest. It has a full CF fuse, so we poked
the main Rx antanna out each side of the fuse (they stick out about an inch on
each side) and mounted the aux Rx behind the flap servo since the wing has a
fiberglass skin (not a CF skin). The only CF in the wing is the spar (which
could block it from the front, but then the fuse antenna would still pick up
the
signal). No problems. None. He also flies it in a Zenith.

The aux (satellite) receiver is important. It actually does most of the
reception work if you can get it away from the rest of the radio. If you're
flying
a plane with CF, I'd recommend the 9 series receiver with the satellite
receiver. You can actually plug in two aux receivers instead of just one. I'll
probably do that. Not that I've had any problems, but just as a warm fuzzy.
They
hardly weigh anything, so why not?

Have you ever been to Visalia on a friday with the chaos and everyone
shooting each other down? Imagine that not being a problem with 2.4? Imagine
contests
that no longer need TX impounds, frequency pins or a matrix that takes
frequencies into account (and the manpower needed to deal with all that)?

2.4 is here to stay. Start learning about it and talking with those who use
it. I think you'll find that it works. Make the switch when you're comfortable
or looking for your next radio. Fly it in your beater airplane to gain
confidence (if it range checks good, it will work. So, I didn't have any
worries
about testing it in my primary contest ship). If anyone has any horror stories,
post them along with all the details. I think you'll find nearly all the
problems to be installation or operator errors. I'm assuming everyone is
talking
about the JR/Spektrum equipment. There are other manufacturers of 2.4/0.9/non
VHF equipment. I haven't tried them, so I can't comment. The only thing I do
know about them at the moment is that not all of their stuff works.yet.
When picking out your next radio, look at what everyone else is flying.

Hope these comments help

Ben Clerx

2007-11-26 Thread Bill's Email
The Futaba FASST system has two antennas and does not use a second RX.
Each antenna has a short piece of coaxial cable on it (very small
diameter) that is a few inches long. This makes it much easier to get
the antennas out and away from the CF in a fuse, etc.

Just wanted to throw that so it was clear that not all systems use a
second RX. But regardless, it is important to get the antenna(s) out
where the RF can see them!!

RE: [RCSE] So, having read the 2.4 Articles in this Month's RCSD, What's your 2.4 opinion?

2007-11-24 Thread Walter H

I think that it is a very well written and informative article about the 2.4
ghz Spektrum system. I would only add two comments that I feel are important.

Sherman's article only addresses the JR 921 receiver or the Spektrum 9000 which
is the same rx but in a different colored plastic case. The JR 921 or the
Spektrum 9000 unlike the other offerings from Spektrum are the only two
receivers that offer a true Failsafe. Smart safe only holds the last servo
position, whatever that maybe while Failsafe takes the servos to a preset or
failsafe position. Personally I see nothing Smart about Smartsafe.

I recently lost an AVA that I had been flying on 2.4 ghz. The AVA had been on
Spektrum's 2.4 ghz system for several months with no problem. Then one day
WHAMO no control at all and it went straight in from about 300 feet. Yes I
performed a successful range check prior to flying. I sent everything off to
Horizon and they could find no problem. Then I read a post by Don Richmond
where he stated that he nearly lost his AVA which was also on 2.4 ghz. After
recovering his AVA he noticed that one of the little lights in the satellite
receiver was not on. He felt that he had lost his bind on that receiver. I
don't know if it is possible but it makes sense to me. Anyway Don rebound the
receiver and has not had the problem since. Now, after turning on the power to
my new 2.4 ghz powered AVA I check each receiver to make sure that all of the
lights are lit. There are two in the JR 921 and Spektrum 9000 and one in the
satellite receiver.

And thats what I think.

5.AR6200 10 grams Smart Safe and Model Match
6.AR6300 2 grams JST connectors and very thin NO satellite receiver
No Smart Safe.
7.AR9100 NEW and designed for Giant Scale with a larger power buss See
AR9000 for the rest.

I will have to do more work on the AR6200. The paper with the receiver
discusses both Smart Safe and a preset FailSafe. So I will have to see what
is
actually there when I do the Blaster 2 Build.

2007-11-24 Thread Walter H

Sherman, I liked your article and found a lot of valuable information in it.
However it is my contention that SmartSafe is nothing like the failsafe that
we love so much. As a matter of fact I see nothing smart or safe about it.
Here is a direct quote from the Spektrum information manual that comes with the
Spektrum 6200:

The AR6200 features a SmartSafe failsafe option. Smartsafe is ideal for
most types of electric aircraft and is also recommended for most types of gas
and glow-powered models. With SmartSafe, when signal is lost the throttle
channel only is driven to its preset failsafe position (normally low throttle)
while all ofher channels hold last command.

As you can see the flap channel on sailplanes or the throttle channel on an
electric are the only thing that will come to a true preset failsafe position.
Everything else holds its last commanded position. To me this is not failsafe
like in my JR 770S. The only reason that I point out the differences in
SmartSafe and Failsafe is so that no one mistake one for the other. So if you
are buying a new receiver and want Failsafe and not SmartSafe and your model is
large enough get the JR921 or the Spektrum 9000. Everything else is SmartSafe.

As for model match I think that it is a great idea and will save quite a few
planes.

Walter

[RCSE] So, having read the 2.4 Articles in this Month's RCSD,

2007-11-24 Thread Ed Anderson
Gordy,

You asked for a review of the articles. Having read the articles I felt they
were clear and well organized.

In the first Sherman focused on what he felt were key advantages of the 2.4 GHz
system. Much of the article was either quotes from the manual or the marketing
material, which he used to explain those features that Sherman felt were
attractive and important.

The second article was also clear, but appeared to be intended to be published
independent of the first as it repeated some of the same points. From that
point I felt it was a little redundant, but not a problem. Sherman showed the
manner in which the system was installed and spoke of his experience. He was
clear that this installation was in a Supra with the new 2.4 GHz friendly pod.

Overall he seemed very happy with the transmitter, the receiver, the way the
system worked. It is his intention to continue to share his experiences with
the 2.4 GHz system as he uses it in a number of other planes.

Based on Sherman's articles, I would be interested in this system for use in my
sailplanes.
