Do polarized glasses help? I've always heard that sunlight is unpolarized, while sunlight reflected off of car hoods, water, the street, etc, becomes polarized. So I can see how polarization would work well for driving, but not for staring up into the sky. In fact, couldn't it possibly make the glider harder to see, because the sunlight being reflected off your wings might be polarized, and you would *want* to see the glare if it was really far away. I don't have polazired glasses, so i can't say I speak from experience. Perhaps the polarization helps on hazy days where sunlight is filtered through the clouds? Glenn, Do you know of any quantitative data which supports this position? I was of the opinion that the data concerning various sunlight radiation has not shown an increase at reasonable elevations. What data is available concerning this and concerning increased incidence of eye damage? I wear Zurich glasses and like them but wish to be informed about any increased dangers to my eyes also. Hey now, I've been using "Zurich" dark sunglasses for a few months now, and I like them a lot. They fit over my normal glasses and wrap around. full uv protection not polarized, good bfor me, I've lost sight of planes using polarized lenses. they're about fifty bux, nice. Jim There are a lot of Sunglasses on the market, and there may be better ones out there, But I would recommend Zurich. They are made in California, and are a good outfit to deal with. The glasses are guaranteed and if Broken, they will replace broken part. I have broken the earpiece and received a new one after two years. At the Oshkosh Fly in at there booth this year they replaced the earpiece with the new soft earpieces which were developed since I bought mine. (four years ago) I only went to the booth to get them cleaned. If you need some to wear over your glasses I would suggest you take a look at them. They are not cheap, $59.95 a pair. Just an eye exam is at least $35.00. The depleted OZONE layer is the cause of increased eye damage. [RCSE] Sunglasses
All, I have been using Revo sunglasses for 15 years and love them. They are great for most activities, except flying. They recently came out with polarized versions, however, Revo's are designed to block out IR and UV, but to let in a lot of available light. I need something better suited for flying. Polarized would be nice, but I need something darker to block out more of the sun, but still let in enough light to see my plane. Recommendations? Price doesn't really matter as I am talking about my eyes here, my ability to use them for the rest of my life outweighs the need to save a buck or two. Lastly, can anyone answer this one? Go to a store on a cloudy day or other low light condition such as dusk, put on a pair of good quality orange sunglasses and see for yourself the increased contrast. Great for driving also. I also attended the IMS show in Pasadena today where there was a booth showing/selling these glasses. I had never seen or tried them before and was blown away. To say that they really improve visibility and remove glare is an understatement. Without the glasses you look up into the blinding glow of the convention center lights, and with them not only is all the glare gone but you can see the lightbulb filament and the writing on lightbulb. I use the Digi sportslens. And I use glasses under them. I really recommend them. Check out http://www.digieyes.com/index.html At last some real wrap around sunglasses, Ive tried a couple, and these are the ones I ended up with. Ps. the amber polaroid lens I think is the best for viewing at a blue sky.
