Re: [RCSE] One full day of RES

I don't know Cal. I see many new fliers starting competition with an RES
plane. Usually a 3 meter RES.

It makes more sense to start someone out on a 3 Meter RES than a 2 Meter
full house.

Afterall this is the National competition. You should not be there if you
only have a few flights on a beginner plane.

This is a great idea and a easy one to implement, drop a day of 2M,
numbers are about the same for 2M and RES, mostly me thinks, because
the guys that come to play for the week bring the requisite toys.

Here's one idea, start AMA TD with one day of 2m, then 2 days of
unlimited, one day of RES and end with a day of NOS. If NOS numbers
are low, the event could wind up earlier in the day to get guys on
their way.

RES has evolved into a fun event with sailplanes that are a blast to
fly, I love my Topaz. A day of RES is a good way for the contest to
wind down. NOS numbers might go up with a full day as some may come
to just fly that event on a Friday.

Hi Guys,
I wasn't trying to take a day from 2m, just suggesting we add a full day of

It seems to me there might be a way for HLG and NOS to share the day with
frequencies and field space much like we do when F3B runs along side of
X/C, using the same fields.

I like and support the idea about the Dan Pruss award (as a member of the

Sounds like a real winner to me! Even though this was my first NATS, I
heard a lot of grumbling about 2-meter, and a number of pilots longing
for RES to have a full day. Based on the numbers you cited (72 pilots
in 2M, 64 in RES) and apparently popular sentiment, I think you have a
pretty strong case.

When I wrote the first rules to start the RES class at the Nats the concept

To diminish Two Meter as a result is back stepping.

Dan Pruss award is up to SOAR. If they want to advance RES to competition

Hi Cal and Everyone:
It would appear that the Nat's is trying to be all things to all flyers.
Looking back on past Nat's with 2 Meter, Standard(100) Unlimited and Scale
it was a more relaxed time. Now we are trying to get F3B, F3J, Hand Launch,
Cross Country, Scale, 2 Meter, Unlimited, RES and Nostalgia into the
schedule. Take a look at this for a schedule.
First Class of AMA TD. Sunday and Monday 2 Meter.
Second Class TD. Tuesday and Wednesday Unlimited.
Third Class.TD. Thursday and Friday RES with Friday shared with Nostalgia.
Friday evening for the Banquet.
Specialty events in the days before and after AMA TD.
This would give SIX days of Thermal Duration Flying with diversified types
of Sailplanes testing all of our skills.

With the introduction of production planes like the Ava and the Topaz, RES
is now the fastest growing segment of plane in this neck of the woods.
Where it used to be just a few people it is now nearly even with the amount
of Open class entries. There are several fliers that have won Open contests
with these planes and it isn't a fluke. Over the last year I have
consistently scored better with my Topaz than with my Open class plane,
primarily because of the ability to just drop it on the spot and have it
stick. They are so light they don't carry too much momentum. They thermal
easier, the handling is excellent, they just don't like as much wind, but
then again, they can successfully be ballasted.

In the big monthly contests SWSA holds, the number of Open class planes is
probably around 30, RES is about 20 and 2M is about 10. It seems completely
upside down to me that 2M at the NATS gets 2 days while RES gets 1/2 a day.
Additionally, the awards banquet is held before RES and NOS are even flown,
pushing it down further from a competitive event to more of a fun fly
afterthought.

I would have Monday for 2M, Tues and Wed for Open, Thurs would be RES, Fri
morning hand launch and Friday afternoon NOS. Events like F3B, F3J,
X-Country and Scale would be on the weekend before or after.

Not so Jim. We fly 2m comps here, and
they tend to be every bit as popular as Open class. We often get more pilots
at 2m comps than any other. Look at my website under Millennium Cup. I have

with that, but they are certainly more efficient, launch higher and hang longer
than 2m models. I love flying 2m models, and one day, poppa Edgar

Now there is an idea, basically what I was getting at, contests and fun
every year. De-emphasize the contest aspect as the die hards know who
they are, and will always show up, we need to attract the rest, the guys
who don't always come, who care less about rigorous competition, who
will support the National Flying site with their presence if it is
relevant to their interests, not the minority of top level competition
pilots.

stick. They are so light they don't carry too much momentum. They
  thermal
easier, the handling is excellent, they just don't like as much
wind,
 but
then again, they can successfully be ballasted.

In the big monthly contests SWSA holds, the number of Open class
planes
 is
probably around 30, RES is about 20 and 2M is about 10. It seems
  completely
upside down to me that 2M at the NATS gets 2 days while RES gets 1/2
a
  day.
Additionally, the awards banquet is held before RES and NOS are even
  flown,
pushing it down further from a competitive event to more of a fun
fly
  afterthought.

What's amazing is that the United States is the only country the
flies
  2M. I
think if you took a poll at the Nats those entered in the event

  it to
occupy time until Unlimited starts. The latest phrase coined at

Nothing.
  In

Yes! RES deserves more rounds.

Drop one day of 2M and install RES.

I still will need to buy a 2M and a RES plane.

Anyone else here think that would be a good idea?

Re: [RCSE] One full day of RES

2005-08-01 Thread Mark Miller
I'm all for a full day of RES. The way it was
explained to me regarding the reason for keeping 2
days of 2 meter was that it was a premier event like
Unlimited and RES was not. I would say that over the
past 4 or 5 years RES had advanced and grown in
popularity around the country. The technology has
advanced to the point where RES designs are winning
unlimited contests these days. 2 meter is declining
around the country and technology and market share is
stagnant or declining.

The number of people flying RES at the NATS is not
what it could be because, in my opinion it is
essentially a half day of flying for a full price
entry. It is also placed badly where folks are trying
to get home after a long week of flying. I feel it is
the class that has actually been growing over the
years nation wide.

The way it can become a premier event is by treating
it that way. I would not mind even seeing the Dan
Pruss award be based on the point total for 2 meter,
Unlimited and RES. It is 3 different ways of flying
and would reward the versitility of the team. This
will, in my mind, be as the award was intended which
was based on 3 classes, 2 meter, standard and
unlimited.

Seeing a full day for DLG with 20 entries is kind of
weird.

Also, who would like to see a Hobie Hawk sub class in
Nostalgia? I would love to see a bunch of Hobies
mixing it up. The Isthmus Models Hobie Hawk Challenge.
I'll provide a trophy.
