If you set up a free Shapeways account, you can test models by uploading there. It'll automatically test your geometry and tell you where any problems are. Accepts obj's too. They have lots of help files on how to best build your geometry but I've found that if you're tidy with building your models and any walls aren't too think, you shoulsn't have many problems. For testing they also print in metals, which I've tried. I had a sterling silver ring printed for my wife :-) and she loves it! Phew! i think you can just make it however you want and just import it into meshlab as obj or fbx just remember there's no smoothing normals or averaged normals in real life, so bake the smoothing before export zbrush was good with that since zbrush has no normals and it's almost faceted On Wed, Apr 4, 2018 at 10:21 PM, Tenshi <tenshi...@gmail.com> wrote: > Thank you guys for the recommendations! > > There´s some guide to follow to do this correctly from Softimage? Re: // 3D Printing
Thank you guys for the recommendations! There´s some guide to follow to do this correctly from Softimage? Talking about the modeling, like.. i model the asset in quad, triangles, can i use hard edges, and after that i export the asset in obj or fbx, open it in meshlab/meshmixer. Anything i need to know before i began? Any advice? Yep, Meshmixer does STL export. it also has some nice tools to make things hollow, to save on print material. You can also check for errors like non-manifold geometry and walls that are too thin. Hi guys, Hope somebody could enlighten me in this, i´ve never worked with 3D Printing and Softimage, My client wants a model that´s going to be metal, for what i know it´s a ´simple box´, soon i´ll have the Autocad plane with all the dimensions. I´ll use Softimage to model this, but my client wants a ´.stl´ format. How can i export this from Softimage? There´s some free plugin? or Do i need to export an .obj/fbx file to another software and convert it? thanks in adv, -- -- Softimage Mailing List. Re: 3D Printing experience on Softimage
You could try using the Shapeways.com service to test some models. I've done a little dabbling and the unit size is no more of an issue than any other 3d software. You run your object through a free package called Netfabb, it tells you the scale of the object, which was 1unit=1mm, then output a .stl file. The good thing with Shapeways is it's all automated, you upload your model, it tells you how much it'll cost to be printed in the various materials, then you can order what you want. To reply to your topic title. I 3d printed some stuff and i used Softimage but since sizes had to be very correct Softimage was quite a bitch. 2014-04-02 21:04 GMT+02:00 Stephen Davidson magic...@bellsouth.net: It does not start shipping till June On Wed, Apr 2, 2014 at 2:13 PM, David Rivera activemotionpictu...@yahoo.com wrote: Hey everyone, thanks for your replies on the previous subject of Quadro K4000. RE: 3D Printing experience on Softimage
I saw the Form 1 in depth at Siggraph last year. For desktop printers under $5,000 USD, it's definitely the best quality printer. It's the only stereo lithography printer available at that price and can print with at least 4x better / finer resolution than the extrusion based printers such as Makerbot. Even though the device is targeted for prototyping, it has enough quality to be used as final output for some applications. Down side is the print volume is quite small, your very limited on choice of printing materials (which also have relatively short shelf life), and the agents used in the process are caustic. You need to wear protective gloves to remove the output from the printer and give it a chemical bath before it's safe to hold with your bare hands - they don't tell you that part until you open the box. I've been very happy with Shapeways. Be very careful designing for minimal volume! You can save or waste a LOT that way. If you take the time to create an account, you can upload your model and benefit from shapeways´ model processing, showing you stats and running through a printability test. You´ll get print prices for each and every material you select and can then either go back to tune your model and re-upload or make a decisision based on the material cost. You don´t need to publish or actually print the model, so I found this helps a lot in starting to create models that fit as good as possible into print specs (size, wallthickness, etc.). It´s important to check the bounding box limitations of different materials (based on the printer/material used) and get used to how the different materials influence your print result. That is a pretty good and transparent service that should lead to few surprises. From there, it´s probably easier to compare competition prizes and options.
