[speedtouch] Re: Installing Speedtouch 330 USB modem for portugal SAPO at Ubuntu Edgy Eft

2007-01-19 Thread Jose Bernardo Silva
Hi!
I had a speedtouch working with ubuntu edgy (and in Portugal too) until
recently, when I got a Sagem 1200 router off ebay. The speedtouch works fine,
even though the sagem seems to allow faster throughput. What I did was
basically what you have on the howtos you linked, you might want to try
executing the instructions in the script by hand first just to check if it
might be a timing problem.

 CONFIG_ATM_BR2684=m
 # CONFIG_ATMBR2684_IPFILTER is not set

 What does it means?
What do you suggest me to do now?

I also considered the problem might me that i have an AMD64
processor and not an intel but i installed the ubuntu 6.10 for intel
anyway. But all the systems seems to be working properly so i think
 that shouldn't be interfering.. right?

Installing a modem with LAN type of plug would be much easier than a
USB type, right? But for that i would have to change ISP.. or just
 quiting starting linux OS :(

 Appreciating your help,
hoping you can help me to set up my internet in the ubuntu with Speedtouch

Strange, I only got PPPoE over ATM working with the user space drivers. There

 Hi everybody,
im using Fedora Core 1 and i have successfuly installed and

the user land driver worked, with some but minor problems. On newer
2.6 kernels it just doesn't work, it keeps giving an error after
loading firmware : something like usb urb - received signal..., i
don't remember now but we can find it on the net very easily after a
google search. I have already tried to patch the usbcore.c as
someone on the net advised but netiher that way the problem was
solved. I also changed a value on modem_run source to a value -1 or
1 (im not sure now) but that also did not solve the problem. To summarize:
 - what is the problem with the newer 2.6 kernels?
 - is there any correct solution available or planned?
 - why, if the connection comes down, im never again able to
reconnect? on 2.4 kernels and some 2.6 versions the only way i had
to get into a clean state was by removing the usbcore, usb_hci,
modules and modprobing them again... this sometimes hangs the
kernel any ideas why? maybe its not a speedtouch issue but a
kernel one... - why does the kernel module speedtch does not
work? i was unable to get it working but there many other guys who
 face the same problem

Sorry if im reposting questions but i was unable to find answers on
these subjects and im not the only one.

Sergio,

I can only add my observations. I was unable to get the kernelspace driver to
work because I was unable to compile br2684ctl. But I have the userspace
driver working properly with kernel 2.6.5. Kernel 2.6.6 has some serious usb
problems here (besides not booting on a sis730 laptop), so I gave up on that
one for now.
As for getting the connection back up again, the only way I can do that is to
kill pppoe3, pppd, modem_run, then unload usbcore and ohci_hcd, then loading
those again. The speedtouch.sh script will do the unloading/loading of the
modules if you tell it to (/etc/speedtouch.cfg), and in my howto you can see
where I added the killall instructions.

Regards,

Ok, so it looks like it is a problem with modem_run and the v4 modem. Are you
using the latest version of modem_run? I'm not sure if only the CVS version
will work with the silver modem. Try (besides all the other ugly hacks)
changing VERBOSE to 1 and DEBUG to 1 in speedtouch.sh, and see what shows in
the log when it loads modem_run, if it is able to load the firmware at all.
You can even try VERBOSE=2, if VERBOSE=1 does not give enough hints.

[speedtouch] br2684ctl on kernel 2.6.x

For PPPoE you will need these options:
   a.. Networking Options
 a.. RFC 1483/2684 Bridged protocols [Y]
   b.. Network Device Support
a.. PPP Over Ethernet (EXPERIMENTAL) [Y]

 dont forget br2684ctl

Hi!
I am now trying to compile br2684ctl, on a machine with kernel 2.6.6. I get
the following:
# cc -o br2684ctl brctl-010226.c -latm
brctl-010226.c:8:17: atm.h: No such file or directory

brctl-010226.c:91: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
brctl-010226.c:91: error: for each function it appears in.)

Any ideas? It would seem that brctl won't compile on a kernel 2.6.x, is that
right? The parse error is fixable by adding #include stdint.h, but the
T2A_PVC error I can't fix (yet).

Not up to now: just that kernel. Some major changes went into the
uhci code in the last release (I think), and one change was buggy.
Of course this may have nothing to do with your problem. Do you
see the same thing with other 2.6 kernels?

Just a followup on Duncan's comment, if the kernel you're speaking about is
2.6.5, lots of problems have been reported with bluetooth adapters, usbnet,
etc. so it is very definitively the uhci code. The bluez mailing lists has a
few recent messages on the usb problems.

Slightly different from the one both my countrymen posted here; I can't check

anything about the tap interface on syslog, as I only found that tap0 already
existed by chance. I'll check.

[speedtouch] Re: Unable to get speedtouch 330 to work

2003-02-23 Thread Jose Bernardo Silva

I've just sent this howto to mandrake's firewall mailing list, now I'm posting
it here too, as it might help others like me that are trying to use a
speedtouch 330 with your drivers and a Mandrake MNF 8.2 firewall; it might
also help with other linux distributions:

To recap, for Portugal we have to use pppoe, and vpi is 0 and vci is 35. Now,
here are the steps to get the speedtouch 330 to work with MNF:

1 - Get the speedtouch-1.2.1.src.rpm (or later) package from cooker

2 - Do a rpm --rebuild speedtouch-1.2.1.src.rpm at a mdk 8.2 or 9 box (the
9.1 or cooker use glibc 2.3.1, so they don't work in MNF);

3 - install the generated speedtouch binary rpm on mnf

4 - get the alcaudsl.sys file from alcatel/thompson's windows drivers, and
copy it to /usr/share/speedtouch as mgmt.o (or edit /etc/speedtouch.conf to
point to alcaudsl.sys);

5 - If you don't have it already, do a mkdir /dev/net, then do a mknod c 10
220 /dev/net/tun;

6 - check your /etc/modules.conf for the following entries, if missing add them:

alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias /dev/ppp ppp_generic
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-13 n_hdlc
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
alias char-major-10-200 tun

7 - Configure mnf using the web interface to use pppoa; you won't get
connected, but pap-secrets and chap-secrets will get filled up correctly;

8 - edit /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf, and replace the entry 'ETH=' with 'ETH=tap1'
- that was what stumbled me for more time, it seems mnf had configured a tap0
entry for my DMZ card, a 3com 3c59x, so when I had that as tap0 it wouldn't
work; if you have a entry in /etc/modules.conf as alias tap0 ethertap,
you'll need to use tap1 too;

9 - edit /usr/share/speedtouch/speedtouch.sh; in the function connect_ppp(),
where you see $PPP call $PEER /dev/null 21, comment that line, and add
these 2:
/usr/bin/pppoa3 -vpi 0 -vci 35 -b -e 1 -m 1 -c
adsl-start

10 - On the same file (/usr/share/speedtouch/speedtouch.sh), find the stop)
entry, and add a line with adsl-stop just before the kill_process pppd,
and another with killall pppoa3 immediately after

11 - do a /etc/init.d/adsl restart, and your Speedtouch 330 should connect
now (check syslog to make sure it doesn't do anymore the RCP connect timeouts,
but instead negociates pap or chap; if you get many usb devfs errors with
modem_run, do a /etc/init.d/adsl stop, disconnect the modem, reconnect, and
try again).

12 - use the web interface to define your zones setup (inside firewall rules),
so your wan interface is now the ppp+ interface;

13 - if needed, edit /etc/ez-ipupdate.conf, so the line INTERFACE=ppp0
instead of INTERFACE=eth1, and restart ez-ipupdate - I don't know why, but
MNF didn't update this one.

As soon as I get a web page up on my new isp, I'm thinking of posting this
howto, might help others.

Frans,

That fixed it. 50Kbps+! Thanks a lot!

It is even faster than the cable I had previously, and that one was supposed
to be 640 while ADSL is 512... Changing ISP sure helped... :)

Try using mgmt.o downloaded from the Alcatel website instead of the
windows file. This caused loads of CRC errors for me.

Now the problem is to configure it all, as it still doesn't work, it launches
a bunch of pppoa3, and pppoe doesn't seem to appear in the picture at all.

[speedtouch] Unable to get speedtouch 330 to work

2003-02-21 Thread Jose Bernardo Silva

Hi, can anyone help me?

I've checked and rechecked, and I can't get my brand new speedtouch 330 to
work with mnf 8.2 (Mandrake's 8.2 based firewall).
Here's what I did:
I've downloaded the src rpm for the 1.2.1 drivers, rebuilt it on a mandrake
8.2 development machine, and installed it on my mnf.
Then, I got the mgmt.o file from alcatel's drivers, copyed it to
/usr/share/speedtouch.
Step three, I configured the adsl connection on the web interface - this
created the /etc/ppp/peers/adsl file, etc. I've checked, and it is correctly
filled up.
Next, I verified pap-secrets and chap-secrets, and the login ids and passwords
checked. Why is it then that I can't connect (when I can connect if I use
w2k), and when I enable debug for ppp I get what follows on the syslog:

find them on the windows drivers?

Thank you.

2003-02-21 Thread Jose Bernardo Silva

Answering my own questions, I managed to get further ahead thanks to a posting
on sourceforge's forum, by Hugo Rodrigues. Following his indications, I edited
the /etc/ppp/peers/adsl file, and changed the options of pppoa3 so that it's
line would be /usr/sbin/pppoa3 -b -e 1 -m 1 -c -vpi 0 -vci 35
