Google Talk

2022-06-12 Thread Karl A. De Graff
An update for your Google Talk page:

As of 2022/06/12 16:00 CDT Google Talk is offline for Pidgin (several days
earlier than expected).

Google accomplished this by removing the fix we had to use years ago to
continue using Pidgin: A "lowered security" setting for 3rd party program
access.

After removing that setting option, Google raised the security back up
behind the scenes without your permission, thereby blocking Pidgin yet
again.

Google Talk Shutdown

2022-05-16 Thread Gary Kramlich

Greetings Programs!

As of 2022-06-16 Google is shutting down third party client access to
Google Talk [1]. This has been in the works for a long time and is
expected. Unfortunately they didn't provide a time nor a time zone, so
who knows exactly when it's going to be shut down...

Unable to remove Google Talk friends

2016-12-02 Thread Luciano Fardin
Hi,

It's been many years that I use Google Talk on Pidgin, even before
Google Plus and Hangouts.
In the past, if I wanted to remove someone, I could easily do that via
Pidgin. After Google Plus came out, I would also have to remove the
person from my circles. Now, there are people showing up in my list
who are not in any of my circles. And, even if I remove them via
Pidgin, they'll show up again next time I login.
Has anyone had the same issue? Is there a workaround?

Att,

Can't connect to Google Talk (Gmail or Apps account) with Pidgin

2015-12-22 Thread Rudie Dirkx
I've tried XMPP and Google Talk as protocol. Neither can connect. I
abhor Gmail's chat client, or Chrome's chat extension. Pidgin used to
work (even a few weeks ago, but I re-installed Windows). On one
occasion I got an email from Google about stopped external client
access because of outdated security stuffs, but that was only once,
and I've tried a dozen times the last days.

I have a Gmail account, which can't connect, and a Google Apps
account, which also can't connect. Both work fine with the Chrome
GTalk extension, but I hate that.

I've read and followed
https://pidgin.im/pipermail/support/2015-February/028685.html but no
success.

Anyone had and solved this problem? Many thanks.

Does the site you're trying to connect to use Google services? Any
domain can be configured to use Google chat. If not, make sure you
didn't add the account as Google XMPP.

If it's actually a Google server, this is probably what you're looking

Is there a way to get Pidgin to sync all conversations from your online

Not presently. The hangouts/web Talk clients appear to get this
history via some mechanism other than XMPP, or at least do not use
XMPP that we understand and support.

NEED SUPPORT- unable to get Pidgin 2.10.11 to connect with Google Talk

2015-04-20 Thread Gale .
Hello Shlomi,Thank you for your suggestion,

re the default Google Talk preset should just work. Maybe the port is blocked.
Can
you send your connection's/errors' log (without the password of course)?I am
strictly a consumer, and not terribly computer savvy, at that.. but if you can
instruct me on how to do the above, I will try-- I do not even know what a
connection's errors' log is
... and I don't exactly know what port you may be referring to that might be
blocked..If you mean my access to third party apps in Google, I do have those
turned off at the moment.. BUT you see, I did try turning access ON, and it did
work but only allowed Pidgin access to my gmail account (notifying me of emails
in inbox).. that did not get Pidgin connected to my google talk, though, for
some reason...
...so I just turned access to third party apps in Google back off, cause it
made me nervous. I received a threatening notification from Google saying: You
recently changed your security settings so that your Google Account is no
longer protected by modern security standards... Please be aware that it is now
easier for an attacker to break into your account. You can make your account
safer again by undoing this change
athttps://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps then switching to
apps made by Google such as Gmail to access your account.
NOTE: Before I did the above, I received a prior message from Google saying We
recently blocked a sign-in attempt to your Google Account so, yes, it
appears that Google was blocking Pidgin via my block to third party apps being
turned ON..., and when I turned OFF the block to third party apps, Pidgin got
through, but as I said, Pidgin ended up only notifying me of new emails into my
gmail account it did not, apparently, connect me to Google Talk.. unless
perhaps there is something else that I should do, on top of unblocking access
to third party apps?
AND, after reading Google's first message above, re security risk, do you think
I have reason to be nervous about unblocking access to third party apps.. and
if so, is there a better, more secure way?
BTW: I appreciated your artwork as posted at your site... I applaud you for
being so creatively versatile, and then for making the time and effort to share
it with the rest of us! (I am an artist, myself)
Thanks again (I am using a different account to further communications with
you... too unfamiliar with Gmail to monkey around with it right now :)
Cheers

Unable to Add Google Talk Account

2015-03-02 Thread Jason Mursch

I'm trying to add a google account using our company domain.
I'm not sure if I am not using the correct settings but currently I get
an Unable to Connect message. I was able to log in with my non-google
domain Gmail account but not my company one with the domain. I have no
proxy to worry about.

First of all, make sure you are using pidgin-2.10.11 and not earlier version
which have bugs.

 For example:
 - Protocol – XMPP?

You can select the Google Talk protocol preset in recent versions of Pidgin.

Then enter your username and domain (if it's not gmail.com).

 - Resource??

A resource is an XMPP specific thing that allows one to use several clients
for the same account.

 - Connection security - (Require encryption? Use encryption if available?
 use old-style SSL?)
 - Connect Port??
 - Connect Server – talk.google.com??

You don't need to set all of these settings with the Google Talk preset.

I've now tried to connect to my account this way on a new UNIX user, and it
worked.

Best regards and good luck,

Re: Can't connect to google talk/chat from Pidgin

2015-02-27 Thread Cristian-Petru
Hi Nate,
what's the message you receive on the bottom of the main screen?

I think it's regarding the Gmail settings, if you enabled 2-step
Verification in your Gmail account you must enable App passwords for
any app you use [other than google's official apps] on any device
[phone, laptop, pc etc].

Go to https://myaccount.google.com/ and create your app password for
Pidgin and put that password in Account Settings in Pidgin [instead of
normal password of your account]
Attention: be sure you copy generated password before closing that window

Worked for me!
Hope i was clear enough with my example :)

Re: Google Talk email notification issue

2015-02-27 Thread Pravin Pichad
Hello guys,

I am using Pidgin to replace Google Talk client.
I have enabled email notification by modifying my account in Pidgin.
Now the issue is I don't get new email notifications, initially I had
discovered that in order to receive notifications I must minimize the
Pidgin program.
I did, I started receiving new mail notifications but after certain period
of time (may be half hour or one) it stops notifying of new emails.
Program seems to be working fine. When I quit it and login again then I get
notification.

I am on Windows 8.1 x64
Any solutions?

Pidgin Google Talk Login Problem

There is the copy of my script of trying to fix this issue through IM. I am
trying to log in to pidgin with my gmail/hangouts account. Pidgin works
fine with my AIM, and Yahoo accounts. But, when trying to enable the
account, I recieve the Not Authorized error. I used the same username
jmpysher and password as I did when I logged in to Gmail. I proceeded to
sign out and back in to Google, with the same password and all was fine,
except for pidgin. I would just really like to use pidgin over the hangouts
window, and Pidgin was recommended to me by a friend and user.

It may be noteworthy that I am able to connect. I owe this to the fact
that Google routinely rolls out their changes in phases per user block.
I'm probably not yet affected then.

We use google talk and are looking at replacing it with pidgin since google

Re: Help connecting with Google Talk

2013-12-04 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
@Julie,

Depending on your network configuration, port 5222 may be blocked.

Can you change some settings and see if this helps? This has helped me
several times in the past.

1. Accounts, Manage, Modify
2. Advanced
3. Connect port: 80
4. Connect server: talk.google.com
5. Save
6. Uncheck and then recheck the box. Accept the certificate when prompted.

If this is unsuccessful and you need to restore the default settings:

1. Connect port: 5222
2. Connect server: blank

This sounds like a network problem - a firewall or something is preventing
access to the servers.

I had success doing this:

The google search term pidgin corporate gmail seemed to isolate the

Google Talk offline messages

2013-05-22 Thread Bogdan Sass
Since Google switched from GTalk to Hangouts, I no longer receive
ANY offline messages on my gtalk account. Which, as you can imagine,
gets very annoying very fast (especially when people start getting mad
at me for not replying to the messages they sent :) )

Strangely enough, as much as I searched, I was unable to find any
reference to this. Am I the only person having with this problem?

If the problem is on my end, can anyone help me solve it? I am
using Pidgin 2.10.7, on Win7 x64.

If this is a Pidgin-Hangouts interoperability problem, are there
any plans to solve it?

Thank you,

We will keep Google Talk around as long as it works. We will keep
XMPP support indefinitely. As of right now there is no sunset for
the XMPP interface to Google Talk that we know of, and in fact the
statements out of Google are somewhat ambiguous. For now, we're just
waiting to see what happens.

Another user who can't connect to Google Talk

2013-04-12 Thread Anthony Papillion
Hello Everyone,

A few days ago, I noticed a user posted a message about not being able to
connect with Google Talk. It doesn't look like the problem was ever resolved
and I'm having the same problem.

I'm using XUbuntu 11.10 and Pidgin 2.10.6. I haven't changed anything on my
machine in a while. Pidgin was working fine with Google Chat and, all of a
sudden, I can't establish a connection.

This is the Google Chat related connection details from the debug log:

(06:05:09) proxy: Connecting to gmail.com:5222.
(06:05:09) proxy: Error connecting to gmail.com:5222 (Connection timed out).
(06:05:09) proxy: Connection attempt failed: Connection timed out

alternative connection methods, like BOSH.

(06:05:09) dnssrv: res_query returned an error

(06:05:09) jabber: jabber_actions: have pep: YES
(06:05:09) connection: Destroying connection 0x216ca560

Looks like Google Talk just isn't answering connections from this client (or
maybe not completing a handshake?)

FWIW, I am able to establish a connection with Google in both my web browser
and by telneting to (IIRC) talk.google.com 5222

Can anyone help me resolve this?

Thanks!

(06:05:09) proxy: Error connecting to gmail.com:5222 (Connection timed out).

This looks like your DNS is broken. SRV lookups are failing, and your
Google Talk is connecting directly to gmail.com, which is wrong.
(It's also possible you just snipped the relevant part of the log.)
If you run 'host -t SRV _xmpp-client._tcp.gmail.com', and it gives any
output other than something substantially similar to this:

_xmpp-client._tcp.gmail.com has SRV record 20 0 5222 alt4.xmpp.l.google.com.
_xmpp-client._tcp.gmail.com has SRV record 5 0 5222 xmpp.l.google.com.
_xmpp-client._tcp.gmail.com has SRV record 20 0 5222 alt1.xmpp.l.google.com.
_xmpp-client._tcp.gmail.com has SRV record 20 0 5222 alt2.xmpp.l.google.com.
_xmpp-client._tcp.gmail.com has SRV record 20 0 5222 alt3.xmpp.l.google.com.

... then that's the problem. Your network is broken (probably a
crappy set-top home router, but possibly your ISP/DNS server), and
you're going to have to work around it. You can put
'xmpp.l.google.com' in the Connect Server box of your GMail account
advanced preferences; this may cause you to have to clear a
certificate warning on connection, I am not sure.

Thank you, Ethan. It definitely does look like some kind of DNS
problem now. When I performed the lookup, I was told the host has no
SRV record. I did the lookup twice (once copying your text to be sure
I wasn't mistyping) and it returned the same result.

Now that I think of it, I did start to have this problem when I
upgraded my ATT home DSL service to their UVERSE offering. Hmm...

Another thing though, I tried connecting to the account through Jitsi

This is the sort of thing one normally reports in a problem report,
instead of I didn't change anything. ;-) For whatever it's worth,
I have U-Verse, use their DNS services, and don't have this problem.
You may want to look into your residential gateway (that's latin for
power-sucking piece of garbage you can't replace) settings.

My second two cents is that I'm ditching U-Verse Real Soon Now.
Comcast just lowered their prices in my area. U-Verse has been
reliable, but the price just keeps going up while the performance
doesn't.

Another thing though, I tried connecting to the account through Jitsi

No. You might look at DNS traffic when Jitsi runs and see what it's
doing. If it understands that gmail.com accounts are Google Talk, it
may be falling back on xmpp.l.google.com when SRV fails. It may also
be using a different resolver.

Re: Unable to connect to Google Talk

2013-04-01 Thread Art

Hi Rich,

Connecting with the various chat providers is very shaky in Pidgin. They
all provide text, but anything beyond that is iffy.

The issue is google's tracking ability. Pidgin doesn't allow google to
track you because you aren't logged into google directly. Chat providers
who specify that you must allow tracking of all your website browsing
are deciding not to allow users to connect indirectly via Pidgin. Note
that google actually uploads active content which must be running on
your computer-and active content makes plain old tracking cookies
obsolete. ACTIVE CONTENT RUNNING IN YOUR COMPUTER IS VERY VERY BAD FOR
YOUR PRIVACY.

Read the terms of service associated with google, and you'll begin to
see the light.

I run google when I want to make a phone call, but other than that,
google never runs in my system. When Ekiga internet phone is functional,
I will give google the boot completely.

I have transferred all my email to my ISP's account, which allows me to
download me to download email without a www browser (using pop3). This
also thwarts google and other entities from tracking me online.

In closing, make sure you aren't loggged into google at the same time
you try to use Pidgin-some chat providers don't allow this.

Enjoy,

Art

Trying next SRV record or connecting directly.

And I'm assuming that earlier in the debug log there is a similar
error for xmpp.l.google.com?

Pidgin on your computer isn't able to establish a connection to
alt1.xmpp.l.google.com:5222, but it looks like it isn't able to.
Possible reasons:
- A local software firewall is running on your computer and blocking
outgoing connections to those hosts on port 5222.
- A piece of network equipment between your computer and Google is
blocking connections to those hosts on port 5222. This could be a
company firewall or content filtering device, for example.
- Your computer, home router, or ISP has broken support for IPv6.
This seems like the most likely cause, to me. I don't know how long
this has been happening, but the hostnames used for Google Talk return
IPv6 records when doing a DNS query for records. Some (most?)
operating systems query for records by default if your computer
has an IPv6 address. I'm guessing either Google started returning
records or your computer started querying for them or your ISP
started giving you an IPv6 address. I feel like there should be
messages earlier in the debug log that print the IP address that
Pidgin is trying to connect to. You could try telneting to that on
port 5222 from the command line and see if it works. You could also
try doing an A looking for xmpp.l.google.com and telnet to that on
port 5222 and see if that works. To fix this, you could probably just
turn off IPv6 somewhere in your computer's network settings. This is
unlikely to have harmful side effects, at least for the next year. If
this is indeed the cause, you should also contact an engineer at your
ISP (not typical front line customer service, because they're usually
clueless) and let them know you're having problems.

Google Talk Messages Missing

2013-03-06 Thread David LaPoint
Hi,

I was wondering if you may have any ideas on this, I don't know if it's a
Google issue, an XMPP server issue, or a client issue.

I use Google Talk on my Android phone, on my computer through the gmail web
interface, and using Pidgin. There seem to be a couple of scenarios where
Pidgin will not pick up sent messages.

Scenario one:
Phone is only device logged into Google Talk.
I receive messages from someone during this time, see notification on the
phone but do not open them.
I open Pidgin, open the chat window for the person and the previously sent
messages do not come up. I can send new messages and receive them then.
I log into Gmail using a browser and open the chat window with the person
and the messages come up.

Scenario two:
Phone and Pidgin are logged into Google Talk.
I receive a new message and both Pidgin and the phone have notifications.
I send and receive messages in Pidgin.
I go away from my computer for a few minutes and use my phone to continue
the conversation. The Google Talk client sees all messages sent and
received using Pidgin.
I return to my computer and Pidgin sees some of the messages received in
the time I was away, and none of the messages sent using the phone.

In scenario two, using the Gmail web interface and Pidgin usually results
in the same thing. It seems that Pidgin has trouble picking up messages
received when not open, or messages sent from other devices (and some
received in response to them). The Gmail web interface and Google Talk
client don't seem to have this problem, they can pick up these messages in
the chat windows.

It's a hard situation to describe, so please let me know if I can explain
better. It's a harder situation to search for, so I hope it's not already
an issue you have on your site somewhere.

Now, if you have set srv fields correctly, then leave Connect server

I'm not an expert, but if you did not set srv records, then it would be
impossible to talk with users using XMPP server other than Google.

Unable to connect? If password is a problem, Pidgin would ask you

Re: Google Talk to MSN

2012-10-29 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
I think what you are talking about is a service that allows you to capture
relayed MSN (and other) conversations through Jabber (XMPP), which
ultimately makes them available in Pidgin.

I haven't heard of this feature for Pidgin and I'm not even sure how it
works currently, so some background information would certainly help.

I did a quick Google search and Global Relay (among others) offer this
service, but I'm not sure it's anything specific to the software (i.e.
Pidgin) or the platform (i.e. Desktop, iPad) you are running. You should
contact the relay service that you are using to find out which client they
recommend on iPad. If the service is offered in XMPP/Jabber you may be
equally as happy searching the Apple app store for XMPP or Jabber (or
Google search for Pidgin alternatives on iPad)

I hope this helps.

There's really not much to it. Set the Protocol to Google Talk, enter
your username (everything before the @), your domain (everything after
the @, often gmail.com), and enter your password. Yes, it will change to
XMPP automatically, that's normal.

Note that if you use two-factor authentication (where Google asks for a

[2.10.1]-Google Talk Status Is Always Away ???

[2.10.1]-Google Talk Status Is Always Away ???

Hi,

Using current Pidgin IM version 2.10.1 on Windows 7 HP 64Bit.

Today I added my Google Talk account to Pidgin,
but my Google Talk status is always Away.
(changing global status in Pidgin does not change Google Talk status?)

Anyone know how to change Google Talk status to Available?
Thanks in advance!

Jesse

Nevermind.

I have an Android OS SmartPhone with Google Talk.
I went into the settings on Google Talk on the phone and fixed this problem.
Thanks!

Re: [2.10.1]-Google Talk Status Is Always Away ???

2012-01-11 Thread Isaac Witmer
I also use an android, However I want my android to go away
A better solution is to mess around with the jabber priority.

Out of the box, Gtalk has a higher priority away than Pidgin does
available. This means that GTalk's priority status over-rides
Pidgin's.
The fix is to adjust Pidgin's priority while available to be higher
than Gtalk's Away priority.

To do this you'll have to enable the XMPP priority plugin. You'll see
the values on the Advanced Tab of your account.

Unfortunately I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head. the
number 24 comes to mind...
