Google Talk
An update for your Google Talk page: As of 2022/06/12 16:00 CDT Google Talk is offline for Pidgin (several days earlier than expected). Google accomplished this by removing the fix we had to use years ago to continue using Pidgin: A "lowered security" setting for 3rd party program access. After removing that setting option, Google raised the security back up behind the scenes without your permission, thereby blocking Pidgin yet again. Karl A. Greetings Programs! As of 2022-06-16 Google is shutting down third party client access to Google Talk [1]. This has been in the works for a long time and is expected. Unable to remove Google Talk friends
Hi, It's been many years that I use Google Talk on Pidgin, even before Google Plus and Hangouts. In the past, if I wanted to remove someone, I could easily do that via Pidgin. After Google Plus came out, I would also have to remove the person from my circles. Now, there are people showing up in my list who are not in any of my circles. And, even if I remove them via Pidgin, they'll show up again next time I login. Has anyone had the same issue? Is there a workaround? Can't connect to Google Talk (Gmail or Apps account) with Pidgin
I've tried XMPP and Google Talk as protocol. Neither can connect. I abhor Gmail's chat client, or Chrome's chat extension. Pidgin used to work (even a few weeks ago, but I re-installed Windows). On one occasion I got an email from Google about stopped external client access because of outdated security stuffs, but that was only once, and I've tried a dozen times the last days. I have a Gmail account, which can't connect, and a Google Apps account, which also can't connect. Both work fine with the Chrome GTalk extension, but I hate that. I've read and followed https://pidgin.im/pipermail/support/2015-February/028685.html but no success. Anyone had and solved this problem? NEED SUPPORT- unable to get Pidgin 2.10.11 to connect with Google Talk
Hello Shlomi,Thank you for your suggestion, re the default Google Talk preset should just work. Maybe the port is blocked. Can you send your connection's/errors' log (without the password of course)?I am strictly a consumer, and not terribly computer savvy, at that.. but if you can instruct me on how to do the above, I will try-- I do not even know what a connection's errors' log is ... and I don't exactly know what port you may be referring to that might be blocked..If you mean my access to third party apps in Google, I do have those turned off at the moment.. BUT you see, I did try turning access ON, and it did work but only allowed Pidgin access to my gmail account (notifying me of emails in inbox).. that did not get Pidgin connected to my google talk, though, for some reason... ...so I just turned access to third party apps in Google back off, cause it made me nervous. I received a threatening notification from Google saying: You recently changed your security settings so that your Google Account is no longer protected by modern security standards... Please be aware that it is now easier for an attacker to break into your account. You can make your account safer again by undoing this change athttps://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps then switching to apps made by Google such as Gmail to access your account. NOTE: Before I did the above, I received a prior message from Google saying We recently blocked a sign-in attempt to your Google Account so, yes, it appears that Google was blocking Pidgin via my block to third party apps being turned ON..., and when I turned OFF the block to third party apps, Pidgin got through, but as I said, Pidgin ended up only notifying me of new emails into my gmail account it did not, apparently, connect me to Google Talk.. unless perhaps there is something else that I should do, on top of unblocking access to third party apps? AND, after reading Google's first message above, re security risk, do you think I have reason to be nervous about unblocking access to third party apps.. and if so, is there a better, more secure way? BTW: I appreciated your artwork as posted at your site... I applaud you for being so creatively versatile, and then for making the time and effort to share it with the rest of us! (I am an artist, myself) Thanks again (I am using a different account to further communications with you... too unfamiliar with Gmail to monkey around with it right now :) Cheers Sun, 19 Apr 2015 18:43:18 -0400 I hope I hear back from someone.. not sure if this is proper way to access support... *I am unable to get Pidgin 2.10.11 to connect with Google Talk...several attempts, varying configurations.* thank you :) the default Google Talk preset should just work. A resource is an XMPP specific thing that allows one to use several clients for the same account. - Connection security - (Require encryption? Hi Nate, what's the message you receive on the bottom of the main screen? I think it's regarding the Gmail settings, if you enabled 2-step Verification in your Gmail account you must enable App passwords for any app you use [other than google's official apps] on any device [phone, laptop, pc etc]. Go to https://myaccount.google.com/ and create your app password for Pidgin and put that password in Account Settings in Pidgin [instead of normal password of your account] Attention: be sure you copy generated password before closing that window Worked for me! Hope i was clear enough with my example :) On Fri, Feb 27, 2015 at 6:58 PM, Nate Jensen herrimanco...@gmail.com wrote: Google just shut down the google talk windows client infrastructure and I hate using the gmail web client for my chats. Google Talk for Google domains issue
So yesterday I was connected to google talk when another employee said she could not connect. I disconnected and could not re-connect with google talk or with pidgin(Only with Hangouts). Because I was connected I suspect an authentication change for google domains. Other people reported that google talk was working fine. I tried with my regular google account @gmail.com and it works but on my google domain xyz.com the google account can no longer sign in. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Re: Google Talk email notification issue
Hello guys, I am using Pidgin to replace Google Talk client. I have enabled email notification by modifying my account in Pidgin. Now the issue is I don't get new email notifications, initially I had discovered that in order to receive notifications I must minimize the Pidgin program. I did, I started receiving new mail notifications but after certain period of time (may be half hour or one) it stops notifying of new emails. Program seems to be working fine. When I quit it and login again then I get notification. I am on Windows 8.1 x64 Any solutions? ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Pidgin Google Talk Login Problem
http://pastebin.com/vrZXUKZe There is the copy of my script of trying to fix this issue through IM. I am trying to log in to pidgin with my gmail/hangouts account. Pidgin works fine with my AIM, and Yahoo accounts. But, when trying to enable the account, I recieve the Not Authorized error. I used the same username jmpysher and password as I did when I logged in to Gmail. I proceeded to sign out and back in to Google, with the same password and all was fine, except for pidgin. I would just really like to use pidgin over the hangouts window, and Pidgin was recommended to me by a friend and user. @Julie, Depending on your network configuration, port 5222 may be blocked. Can you change some settings and see if this helps? This has helped me several times in the past. 1. Accounts, Manage, Modify 2. Advanced 3. Connect port: 80 4. Connect server: talk.google.com 5. Save 6. Uncheck and then recheck the box. Accept the certificate when prompted. If this is unsuccessful and you need to restore the default settings: 1. Connect port: 5222 2. This is the sort of thing one normally reports in a problem report, instead of I didn't change anything. ;-) For whatever it's worth, I have U-Verse, use their DNS services, and don't have this problem. You may want to look into your residential gateway (that's latin for power-sucking piece of garbage you can't replace) settings. My second two cents is that I'm ditching U-Verse Real Soon Now. Comcast just lowered their prices in my area. U-Verse has been reliable, but the price just keeps going up while the performance doesn't. Another thing though, I tried connecting to the account through Jitsi and it didn't give me this error. Any idea why or if that means anything at all? No. You might look at DNS traffic when Jitsi runs and see what it's doing. If it understands that gmail.com accounts are Google Talk, it may be falling back on xmpp.l.google.com when SRV fails. It may also be using a different resolver. Ethan signature.asc Description: Digital signature ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Re: Unable to connect to Google Talk
Hi Rich, Connecting with the various chat providers is very shaky in Pidgin. They all provide text, but anything beyond that is iffy. The issue is google's tracking ability. Pidgin doesn't allow google to track you because you aren't logged into google directly. Chat providers who specify that you must allow tracking of all your website browsing are deciding not to allow users to connect indirectly via Pidgin. Note that google actually uploads active content which must be running on your computer-and active content makes plain old tracking cookies obsolete. ACTIVE CONTENT RUNNING IN YOUR COMPUTER IS VERY VERY BAD FOR YOUR PRIVACY. Read the terms of service associated with google, and you'll begin to see the light. I run google when I want to make a phone call, but other than that, google never runs in my system. When Ekiga internet phone is functional, I will give google the boot completely. I have transferred all my email to my ISP's account, which allows me to download me to download email without a www browser (using pop3). This also thwarts google and other entities from tracking me online. In closing, make sure you aren't loggged into google at the same time you try to use Pidgin-some chat providers don't allow this. (12:55:48) proxy: Connection attempt failed: Connection timed out. (12:55:48) jabber: Unable to connect to server: Connection timed out.. Trying next SRV record or connecting directly. And I'm assuming that earlier in the debug log there is a similar error for xmpp.l.google.com? Pidgin on your computer isn't able to establish a connection to alt1.xmpp.l.google.com:5222, but it looks like it isn't able to. Possible reasons: - A local software firewall is running on your computer and blocking outgoing connections to those hosts on port 5222. - A piece of network equipment between your computer and Google is blocking connections to those hosts on port 5222. This could be a company firewall or content filtering device, for example. - Your computer, home router, or ISP has broken support for IPv6. This seems like the most likely cause, to me. I don't know how long this has been happening, but the hostnames used for Google Talk return IPv6 records when doing a DNS query for records. Some (most?) operating systems query for records by default if your computer has an IPv6 address. I'm guessing either Google started returning records or your computer started querying for them or your ISP started giving you an IPv6 address. I feel like there should be messages earlier in the debug log that print the IP address that Pidgin is trying to connect to. You could try telneting to that on port 5222 from the command line and see if it works. You could also try doing an A looking for xmpp.l.google.com and telnet to that on port 5222 and see if that works. To fix this, you could probably just turn off IPv6 somewhere in your computer's network settings. This is unlikely to have harmful side effects, at least for the next year. If this is indeed the cause, you should also contact an engineer at your ISP (not typical front line customer service, because they're usually clueless) and let them know you're having problems. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Google Talk Messages Missing
Hi, I was wondering if you may have any ideas on this, I don't know if it's a Google issue, an XMPP server issue, or a client issue. I use Google Talk on my Android phone, on my computer through the gmail web interface, and using Pidgin. There seem to be a couple of scenarios where Pidgin will not pick up sent messages. Scenario one: Phone is only device logged into Google Talk. I receive messages from someone during this time, see notification on the phone but do not open them. I open Pidgin, open the chat window for the person and the previously sent messages do not come up. I can send new messages and receive them then. I log into Gmail using a browser and open the chat window with the person and the messages come up. Scenario two: Phone and Pidgin are logged into Google Talk. I receive a new message and both Pidgin and the phone have notifications. I send and receive messages in Pidgin. I go away from my computer for a few minutes and use my phone to continue the conversation. The Google Talk client sees all messages sent and received using Pidgin. I return to my computer and Pidgin sees some of the messages received in the time I was away, and none of the messages sent using the phone. In scenario two, using the Gmail web interface and Pidgin usually results in the same thing. It seems that Pidgin has trouble picking up messages received when not open, or messages sent from other devices (and some received in response to them). The Gmail web interface and Google Talk client don't seem to have this problem, they can pick up these messages in the chat windows. It's a hard situation to describe, so please let me know if I can explain better. It's a harder situation to search for, so I hope it's not already an issue you have on your site somewhere. The only reason you see invisible as an option is that you are *also* signed on to some protocol that does. When you change to invisible, that protocol will become invisible while XMPP remains unchanged. Ethan ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Google Talk account switches to XMPP and cannot login
Hi Support, I am running *Pidgin 2.10.6* (libpurple 2.10.6) and am unable to connect my gmail Google Talk account. I have verified my settings and the Protocol is set to ‘Google Talk’ but on Save the protocol switches to XMPP and login fails. I had this issue right after installation and Pidgin successfully connected to this account for a while, but now the issue is occurring again. If you can send me any technote or URL to a solution I would really appreciate it, Many thanks Dean ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Re: Google Talk to MSN
I think what you are talking about is a service that allows you to capture relayed MSN (and other) conversations through Jabber (XMPP), which ultimately makes them available in Pidgin. I haven't heard of this feature for Pidgin and I'm not even sure how it works currently, so some background information would certainly help. I did a quick Google search and Global Relay (among others) offer this service, but I'm not sure it's anything specific to the software (i.e. Pidgin) or the platform (i.e. Desktop, iPad) you are running. You should contact the relay service that you are using to find out which client they recommend on iPad. If the service is offered in XMPP/Jabber you may be equally as happy searching the Apple app store for XMPP or Jabber (or Google search for Pidgin alternatives on iPad) I hope this helps. -Tres On Mon, Oct 29, 2012 at 2:51 PM, Cor Kloet cornkl...@live.nl wrote: Hoe i can get Google bridge msn on my iPad? seems ok. remove none from resources, leave it blank. give some name in local aliases. on second tab, Advanced, check the following: connection security: Require encryption connect port: 5222 file transfer proxies: proxy.eu.jabber.org tick show custom smileys leave remaining things unfilled, unticked. in third tab, proxy proxy type: Use Global Proxy settings. That is how my settings go, that are working. You can try them. Re: [2.10.1]-Google Talk Status Is Always Away ???
I also use an android, However I want my android to go away A better solution is to mess around with the jabber priority. Out of the box, Gtalk has a higher priority away than Pidgin does available. This means that GTalk's priority status over-rides Pidgin's. The fix is to adjust Pidgin's priority while available to be higher than Gtalk's Away priority. To do this you'll have to enable the XMPP priority plugin. You'll see the values on the Advanced Tab of your account. Unfortunately I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head. the number 24 comes to mind... -Isaac On Wed, Jan 11, 2012 at 1:06 PM, Jesse Palser slnth...@aol.com wrote: Nevermind.
