You're going to have to be a bit more specific than this. We have no clue what

What you are talking about then are personal status messages; no released
version of pidgin supports this in any way. No plugin can add the feature. You
will have to wait until we release a version of Pidgin that includes newer MSN
protocol support.

No. We don't have this because of the huge potential for abuse.

We allow this, but it is all done in the backend on the server side. We
create groups on our internal system (Jive Openfire) and allow for users to

Pidgin does not run on windows mobile.

Long answer:
It relies on the GTK toolkit which has not been ported to Windows mobile and I
would be surprised if anybody was trying to.

Pidgin is based on libpurple which in theory could be ported to windows mobile,
however a windows mobile developer would then need to create a user interface
for it.

Spam email is really a problem for your email provider.

If you mean SPIM then from then on the Buddy list you can select the "Tools"
menu and then the "Privacy" option. From there you can alter your settings.

Assuming that you can't actually use the pidgin-encryption installer
because of how you're using a non-installed version of Pidgin, you can
use 7zip to extract the contents of the pidgin-encryption installer
and copy the dll and pixmaps to your portable pidgin instance.

re: question

2009-02-03 Thread Geoffrey Lane
I no longer have a u3, but I use pidgin portable, which is a similar
project. What you're probably going to need to do is find the plugin
directory in the u3. If I remember this is an apps folder, a random
digit folder and then the program name..
([drive]\apps\\pidgin\plugins -- Which I know doesn't help too
much). But try to search for plugins or pidgin on the u3 drive and
locate the plugins directory, then you can change the install dir on
encryption plugin to the same one as you found in previous steps. The
other way is to install this to pidgin on hd and copy the dll from one
to the other

Pidgin is an IM client. Your password is between you and the service

Perhaps for protocols which have central signup + password retrieval
URLs, links could be placed in the Basic tab of the Modify Account dialog.

Seems like it would be useful, although maybe a bit troublesome to make
sure the links are up to date.

Well, while the "Change Password" link may change, likely the
'general' URL won't

Even if the wording were vague, it'd be a pointer to be able to say

Not yet, Pidgin voice and video depends on underlying infrastructure
that is not yet ported to the Windows world. It's not the easiest thing
to get going on a fair few Linux distros either so it's not favouritism.

Hi again,

I tried to take a screen shot, but I'm having difficulties.

The very top strip has the pidgen face and then to the right says Buddy
List, then right of that the 3 buttons, minimize, maximize and close. Which
I click on the pidgen face, left click or right click, I get the menu
restore, move, size etc.. etc..
Below that is the menu bar --- Buddies Accounts Tools Help
Below that starts the white buddies window.
So, I wasn't able to use that method to select ** always on top ** .

I'm running Windows 7 on a Toshiba dv9000 laptop if that helps anyone to
help me figure this out. I really do appreciate your help.

If you have logging enabled, your logs will be stored in your
~/.purple directory, structured as
~/.purple/logs with one file per

Re: Question

2011-03-30 Thread ChO₂
Hi,

I got some ideas how you could make this happen. There are several
options:

a) set your nick to the word that you want to cause the sound. This is
ugly but it's simple. If you want to keep your nick, you can make two
simultaneous connections to the same server.
b) use a plugin. I don't know of a plugin that is able to do this, but
such a plugin might already exist or someone might want to write it.
c) use a bot that either says your name when someone says "ALL" or sends
you a private message
d) tell everyone in the channel to post the output of /names to the
channel when saying something that is relevant for everybody.

Cheers,

Betreff: Question
Datum: Wed, 30 Mar 2011 12:04:14 +0100

Hi,

I have a question about Pidgin usage.

Is it possible to associate a sound to specific words someone might say
in chat?

Let's say I'm in a chat with 20 people and we decided that every time
someone has to say something to everyone starts his sentence with the
word "ALL: hi can...", is it possible to associate to the word All a
specific sound so that i don't miss that message? if no sound can be
used , then is it possible to make pidgin highlight that sentence (or
any other sentence) that has the word ALL in it? (or any other word i
want to set up to be highlighted)

Hope I was able to explain in a fine way what I need :)

I thank you in advance to your help and support.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for you reply.

I tried to look for a plugin but didn't fin it yet (to be honest i didn't
spend much time searching...yet lol)

I'll give a shot with the other solutions. (of course finding a plug in

Anyway...It might be a good idea for next versions, i think users will
appreciate this option :)

The statuses listed in the top section of the status selector are the
generic status types that the protocol supports. They are hard-coded into
the plugin responsible for the protocol in question (or into
pidgin/libpurple in the case of the cross-protocol status subset).

The only way to remove them is to edit the source before building pidgin
(though I suppose a plugin might be able hide them at runtime with enough
work).

Re: Question

2011-04-15 Thread Raffaello Fontana
Hi Again,

You have been so nice last time so i thought to ask another question about
Pidgin. (hope i'm not annoying too much ehehe)

Here is the question:

Me and my team created a chatroom we use for work. We need to set up a topic
for everyone to see.
what's happening at the moment is that i can se topic (*e.g. /topic ctc is
raffaello*) and it works fine! everyone can see (on top) the name of the
chatroom and just below it they can see topic "*ctc is raffaello*". The
problems comes if i log off and log back in..the topic disappears...but who
ever was in the chatoroom when i set the topic can still see it (unless they
go out the chatroom too and comes back).

So in summary: who ever log out and log back in a chatroom, can't see the
topic anymore. Why doesn't stay there? might be a bug or this is just the
way it works (but i don't know why).

I'd like to thank you in advance for your time and no hurry...if you can
just look into it when you have time it would be great.

THANKS

Raffaello

Ah, I see, if you're not used to mailing lists it can be a bit
confusing. Essentially you need to confirm that you want to be
subscribed, that's done by sending an email to the address you provide
and are assumed to have control of. You need to follow the
instructions, often as simple as clicking a link in the email.

>
> Not sure what service I am using How do I know this?

Well, Pidgin is a multi-protocol client, so it can use the AOL Instant
Messaging service, or Microsoft Messenger (MSN), it depends which
accounts you have set up. I think you would know which service you are
using, it will tell you in the Accounts dialogue that opens with ctrl-A.

> Version: Pidgin 2.7.4 (libpurple 2.7.4)
> Operating System: Windows7

That tells me enough to know you need to upgrade to the latest version,
which is 2.7.11. This can be done by downloading it from the Pidgin
site front page at http://pidgin.im and then once you have closed the
current version run the installer and follow the prompts. Note that if
you want localisation and spell-checking you can select this in the
check boxes during the installation, it's also worth installing the
debug symbols as it helps if you suffer any crashes as you can report
the detailed information needed to identify the problem without needing
to know anything about debugging at all.

Once you have done this, see if the error you are suffering still
occurs, if it does, come and ask again on the mailing list. We prefer
to deal with it there as the details are archived so they can be
searched and then we avoid some repeat questions.

Hope this helps a bit, I realise you may find all this a bit confusing.

I assume you realise that Pidgin support is done by volunteers in their
own time, and that Pidgin is a free software project? I will try to
help you out, but it's getting late where I am so I won't be around for
much longer. I have copied this to the list so that people see what's
been said.

I think this feature requires all clients to support MPOP. If a
client doesn't support MPOP then it kicks off all other clients when
it connects. So in this case it sounds like the program you're using

First of all, I apologize for the unhelpful responses from the peanut
gallery. This is a public mailing list, and sometimes users get too
zealous.

There are two things you can try. Both will require running a cleanup
script on every host that has the icon. If you couple this with
changing her actual online icon to something not indecent, it should
take care of your problems.

The first (easier) method is this:

1) Find a copy of the icon, or else find a user who has the
   indecent icon in their Pidgin

2a) If you found a copy of the icon, get its SHA-1 checksum; the
'sha1sum' command will do this on most Linux boxes, 'shasum'
on OS X. Call this for the following instructions.

2b) If you found a buddy list that contains the icon, search for
the affected user's username in the buddy list in
~/.purple/blist.xml. You should see something like this:

AffectedBuddy
Affected Buddy
1319733408
d8159b2f6217e8833e1eab4ee7cee4dd8e81a8ca.jpg
d8159b2f6217e8833e1eab4ee7cee4dd8e81a8ca

Find the checksum of the buddy icon in the with the
attribute name='icon_checksum'. In this case, the checksum is
d8159b2f6217e8833e1eab4ee7cee4dd8e81a8ca. Call this
 for the following instructions.

3) On each computer that has cached the offending icon, remove
   ~/.purple/icons/.jpg.

The second, slightly more complicated method (more complicated only
because it requires doing more than a single file deletion on the
hosts that have the offending icon) requires parsing
~/.purple/icons/blist.xml on each user's account, and removing the
icon you find marked there. If we call the user with the bad icon
, you want to find the following XML item (in XPath
notation) in blist.xml:

/purple/blist/group/contact/buddy[@proto="prpl-aim" and
name=""]/setting[@name="buddy_icon"]

The value of this node is the name of a file in ~/.purple/icons.
Remove that file, and the offending icon will be gone.

All icon deletions (whichever method you choose) need to be done when
the local Pidgin is not running, or Pidgin may just restore the icon
the next time it gets an update over the network.

In both cases, you need to have the affected user change her icon to
something non-offensive, or these hosts will just re-fetch it when
they fetch their buddy lists again.

If you have lost control of the affected AIM account completely ... I
dunno. We can't block individual icons.

The peanut gallery advice on NOT using free public corporate IM
servers for business functions is good advice. There are numerous
open source XMPP servers, you may wish to look into using one.

Pidgin is intended for use with, typically pre-existing, third party
server systems, of many different kinds. You will need to contact the
supplier of the system you intend to use.

Most people setting up internal servers use XMPP based servers. As far
as I know, XMPP doesn't provide end to end encryption.

Pidgin also supports Apple's Bonjour protocol, on a single broadcast
area. That doesn't use servers. I don't know what security features it
has, and therefore if it is possible to monitor. However, if it does
provide encryption, it will be intrinsically end to end.

I assume that your requirement is that the system be insecure as far as
the teachers are concerned. There are, I believe, Pidgin plugins that
try to make such systems end to end secure, but you would see the
resulting encrypted data, even if you couldn't decipher it.

There are generally a lot more questions on this list from people trying
to prevent intelligence gathering by central authorities, than trying to
allow it, although the financial services industry does have that sort
of requirement.

some IM services which are supported by pidgin also have smartphone clients,

Most IM services and protocols have mobile phone apps. You would need
to choose one for the particular service. Pidgin would be irrelevant to
that.

The short answer is yes.

The long answer depends on whether you require serverless messaging
capabilities. If you require serverless, Pidgin supports Bonjour for link-local
messaging. If server-based is an option, there is also the XMPP protocol which
has a number of free server software packages available. In this context, XMPP
requires that server software run somewhere.

This is "the tooltip".

This is on Windows, right? The behavior you're seeing is caused by a
GTK+ bug that has been around for quite a while - it has been improved
significantly, but not eliminated completely.

Which version of Pidgin and GTK+ are you using?

Yes, that icon means the person is logged in on a mobile device. However it
looks like it's showing up next to a user who is offline, which probably
shouldn't happen. What protocol are you seeing this with? And what version
of Pidgin are you using?

Well that's weird. It's possible this bug has been fixed in Pidgin 2.3.1,
which is the current version. We're also working on some major changes to the
MSN code behind the scenes. So if it isn't fixed yet, it's possible it will
be fixed when those changes are released (no timeframe yet).

Hi Christian! Thanks for your enquiry. It is not possible for us to
grant you a license under any other license. There have been many
contributors to libpurple over the past 10 years, and it is not
feasible to track them all down and request their permission in using
a different license. (It is also unlikely that everyone would be ok
with a non-GPL license, but this point is moot.)

My non-legally-binding and not-a-lawyer understanding is this:

Instant Messaging Freedom, Inc. retains the rights to the Pidgin logo,
the Pidgin name "libpurple", etc. as it pertains to an Internet
messaging application. However, we allow these things to be used in
reference to the Pidgin project itself.

As long as you're simply using the Pidgin application, and not trying
to pass off your independent feature film as an IM application using
the Pidgin logo, there should be no problem. In fact, I myself think
it's fantastic, as do, I suspect, other project members.

There have been numerous bug reports about this since we released 2.3.0,
it is fixed for the next version which we will hopefully be able to

Do you mean smiley themes or GTK+ themes? Smiley themes are found around
as they happen to exist, there isn't a central location for them that I
know of (though one could be started on the pidgin wiki). GTK+ themes are
found at various GTK+ theme sites around the internet.

> Also, this may sound silly but how do you change your theme?

Pidgin smiley themes are changed via the Preferences dialog. GTK+ themes
are changed by a GTK+ theme changer, your Desktop Environment, the GTK+
Theme Selector tool (in Windows), or manually in the ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file.

One further note, you do realize that 1.5.0 was released almost
three years ago at this point and is seriously out of date, right?

This doesn't do what you think it does. You are changing the nickname
that *other* people see for you, as well as what you see for yourself.

It sounds to me like you want to see something shorter on your own
screen, presumably because you already know who you are. To
accomplish this, set an alias in the account preferences for your IRC
account (Open the accounts dialog, select your IRC account, and press
'Modify'.)

Re: Question about IRC accounts

2010-02-12 Thread Phil Adams
Yes, I actually do want to change the alias that others see for me in
the IRC channel, so the "/nick" command is the one I want (I think).
I was just wondering if there was a way to have this automatically
done when I join the channel or connect to the IRC server.

There isn't a way to change your nickname for a single channel (IRC
doesn't support such a concept at all) - by using "/nick" you're doing
the same thing effectively as changing the username that you use to
connect to the server.

Given this, is there a reason that you need to change your nickname
after connecting instead of just connecting using the desired
username?

Aha. That explains the strange request.
The simple answer is that there is no built-in way to do what you
want, but a plugin could pretty easily do it.

That is something different, it is certainly confusing that there are
two fields labeled "Username" when modifying an IRC account.
The one in the "Advanced" section is, IIRC, intended to be information
about the username that you're logged into your machine with.
At any rate, it isn't useful to you.

Re: Question about IRC accounts

2010-04-28 Thread Craig Harding
A few years ago I made an IRC plugin that ran cmds after you logged
into a specific server. I used it for basically logging me into a
password protected channel with irc key and username. I believe this
was before pidgin implemented this option for irc channels (to store
your channel password).

It didn't have an interface to change the server, channel, user or
pass, you have to add the code in the plugin then compile it. Its not
the prettiest plugin but it worked for me when I needed it. You could
use it to maybe do what you need, without doing it manually every
time.

If you're comfortable compiling a plugin and adding irc cmds as you
wish it might be what you need. Let me know and I can find the plugin
and Makefile and send it to you.

The Pidgin project has no association with the OTR people. The OTR plugin is a
third-party plugin and thus must be installed separately.

What kind of comments are you looking for? And why did you restate all
of John's response to you as a new email thread?

We do not maintain a lot of plugins as part of Pidgin. OTR in
particular has a community of efforts to bring OTR support to various IM
clients, many of which do not ship the feature directly.

We have considered a relationship with the OTR plugin developers, which
has been discussed on the development mailing list[1] and our
tracker[2], but nothing is finalized yet.
