Visual annoyances after updating to SM 2.26.1

2014-06-30 Thread Richard Owlett

This comes under heading of unintended consequences.

I just updated from SM 2.17.1 to 2.26.1.

In browser:
I have my preferences set to display a blank page on startup.
In 2.17 that resulted in displaying a blank page *AND* an
empty(blank) address bar. With 2.17 there is a reminder that the
address bar is for address/search terms.
I understand the logic behind the chain. Can I have back the
desirable default?

In mail/news:
Signature block (correct term?) now appears in lighter type
than body of the post. I find this annoying. Once again, any
work-around?

P.S. I go back to Netscape days and this was one of the smoother
upgrades.

There are a couple of ways to do this -

1) you can copy the places.sqlite file from the Profile on one machine
to the other.

2) you can use Bookmarks Manager to Export your Bookmarks as .html, move
that file from one machine to the other, and then use Bookmarks Manager
to Import Bookmarks from that file.

I also use Export and then edit with Composer to send lists of Bookmark
URLs as a .html file to friends via e-mail...very handy. Also handy if
you don't want to move *all* of your Bookmarks from one machine to
another.

Where do I find places.sqlite on a win7 computer. I typed places.sqlite
in the the search box on the start menu but it didn't find it.?

That method of searching is to find a Windows system program. You would
have found the file if you used Windows Explorer search on (most likely)
the C: drive.

Depends. The reason why i changed the background color was to be able to
see trailing blank lines. There was a time when blank lines were
appended after a sig.

This bug has been fixed. Then there was a time, when the appended blank
lines were shown in the Sent folder but not in the message itself. Seems
also to be fixed.

Why do i still modify the background color of sigs? It does not disturb
me, it may be convenient in the future and i can spare the effort of
commenting out the modification. ;)

P.S.
Oh, i have just tested a mail to myself with a manually inserted sig.
Two blank lines are appended. But only in the received mail, not in the
Sent folder. Interesting. :)

Therefore i have send a message to a test group of a news server. No
appended blank lines in either the message or the Sent folder. Am i
interested enough to look further? No. :-D

Ah. So it never worked as intended in the past world-wide? :(

Cancels in general on other news servers? Even if a cancel is accepted
and propagated to other news servers, you can never be sure, that others
can not see the cancelled message.

The user may have a local news server which may have received the
message before it was cancelled. Then there are news server which
require Cancel-Lock Cancel-Key for an allowed cancel.

You may use a news server which does not require them, so you do not
need them for a cancel on that news server. But other news server,
requiring them, will not accept the cancel.

So you may end up with a successful cancel on your own news server while
the posting can still be read via other news server. :)

Finally fixed?!

Flash 14.0.0.125 exhibits all the previous problems with SM that have
been discussed in this group. The message I am getting is:

Warning Unresponsive Plug In
Shockwave Flash may be busy or it may have stopped responding

I am running two machines, one with Win 7 64b, the other vista 32b both
with SM 2.26.1. Flash still will not run on my Vista machine and focus
is lost. The problems also occurs on the Win 7 machine. I keep Flash
disabled most of the time. Recent prior versions of SM did not lose
focus on either machine. Anyone else still having these or similar
problems?

Larry

Not having any problems with Flash here on CNN or Fox News tests.

But I'm using Linux with Flash 11.2.202.378

Any links to the problem sites might help.

Hard to pinpoint a site when I have multiple tabs and windows open. It
seems to occur at start up with AOL.com as my home page.

Try it with unchecked 'Advertise Firefox compatibility'. ;)

I am using Firefox compatibility. That audio did not play for me
automatically.

Interesting. You are using 2.26.1 and i have used 2.30a1. Also, we are
using a different OS.

Now i am also using 2.26.1. I can do that because i did download the
release before some hours to test another issue. *g*

On a fresh profile the audio started automatically. That was expected
because the Firefox compatibility is default. But. Almost always there
is a but. :)

Using 2.26.1 with my default profile, the one i use with 2.30a1, audio
did *not* start automatically. Whatever the Firefox compatibility was
set to. Hm.

You could also test the issue with a fresh profile. Just to enhance the
confusion. :-D

I much prefer to have to click a play button to get an audio item to

You're the second person to ask for this.

userChrome.css Example:

html|*.textbox-input::-moz-placeholder {
  color: #FFF;
  opacity: 0.0;
}

In your case you could set the opacity to 0. You may want to make this
specific to the address bar.

 In mail/news:
Signature block (correct term?) now appears in lighter type
than body of the post. I find this annoying. Once again, any

Currently we use opacity: 0.5 to simulate lighter type. Use
userChrome.css to set the opacity back to 1.0.

P.S. I go back to Netscape days and this was one of the smoother
 upgrades.

Thanks

I fail to see any harm in the default Enter search term, keyword, or
web address. This appears whenever the address area is blank even if
the page itself is not blank.

I do. In Windows:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:29.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/29.0
SeaMonkey/2.26.1

Perhaps it is my profile setting, but if I enter a word ('burp' for
instance) in the URL bar, I am returned with and alert messge:

burp could not be found. Please check the name and try again

Ironically, if I do the same in Firefox 30.0
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:30.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/30.0
, I am redirected to www.inert.com:

I've been using Windows the past few days to troubleshoot some

Extensions are the most likely, although there can be other odd settings
in the profile that can be disruptive (for which Safe Mode can also clear).

AdBlock is definitely a potential culprit, as are other blocking tools,
such as FlashBlock, NoScript and Ghostery. I've also seen occasional
display problems by blocking cookies for particular sites.

I run AdBlock and NoScript, and am not having any problems at Google
Play, although a check of Adblock settings there (Shift-Ctrl-V) shows
that I don't have anything blocked there. Might want to make sure that
there aren't any settings blocking content.
