Java, again
I saw some information about Java working, so I went to Tools -> Add-ons Manager and checked to see if I had Java running. I did not, so I clicked on the link "Check to see if your plugins are up to date" I did that and a new tab opened up which took me to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/. That page, below the racoon with the magnifying glass, had a box that said, Missing Java? For your safety, Firefox has disabled your outdated version of Java. Please upgrade to the latest version. I clicked on the "upgrade to the latest version" link and was taken to http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp . There I clicked on the red "Free Java Download" button and ended up at http://java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp?locale=en, which was "Java Downloads for Linux Recommended Version 7 Update 17" I downloaded and installed the Linux (i386) RPM and quit SeaMonkey. I then executed, cd /usr/local/seamonkey mkdir plugins cd plugins ln -s /usr/java/latest/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so . I restarted SeaMonkey, went to Tools -> Add-ons Manager and again saw that Java was missing. I know you can right click and choose to close tab or if the tab is at the far right just click the close button on the right or middle click on a tab to close it but my middle click button has quite working on my mouse and hate to buy a new one. In the SM Modern Theme there is a close button in the right hand corner of the Tab bar which will close the current Tab. That's what I use, but I know what you mean, Safari has the button on the Tab itself. Personally, I'm content with either implementation. Though I do find that it's quicker to close multiple Tabs using the SM implementation because you don't have to move the cursor - just click away. I much prefer the Seamonkey implementation. The open new tab and close existing tab buttons are always in the same place. That's one of the reasons I don't regularly use Firefox, where the corresponding buttons move depending upon how many tabs you have open. I haven't tried it in Firefox, but if I have more tabs open in a window than are displayed on the tab bar, I can get to the open new tab button in Seamonkey regardless of which tab I'm displaying. If Firefox's implementation works the same way as Seamonkey, I would first have to go to the right-most tab to expose the open new tab button and then click the button. Specifically, on maps.google.com, changing from the map display to the satellite display is painfully slow. Zillow just saturates one of my processor's cores most of the time. Is there any fix for this? You might attempt to update your video drivers. Mozilla products are known to block hardware acceleration on older video drivers due to stability reasons. I went to nvidia.com and downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.49.run, the latest non-beta driver for my GeForce 8600GT they have. After doing an init 3 and installing the driver (with their libraries) I have found: - If I go to http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/829-Folsom-Street-414-San-Francisco-CA-94107/2120805344_zpid/ with Flash disabled as NoOp suggested, after an initial processor load for loading the graphics, my processor load is low. It is, however, higher than displaying the Add-ons Manager tab. With the Add-ons Manager tab displayed, the only thing that shows up regularly in top is top itself, at a %CPU of 0.0, 2.4, or 4.9. With the Folsom Street visible, seamonkey-bin shows up regularly at a $CPU of 12.2 and occasionally 14.9 and 17.1. - If I go to Zillow's page for showing a map of an area, http://www.zillow.com/homes/shingletown,-ca_rb/ , for example, the processor load goes up noticably. Now seamonkey-bin's load varies between 35% and 80%, with Xorg varying complementarily to make up close to 100%. So, where I spend most of my time on Zillow, looking at the map of an area, is still not improved. And I don't need to minimize a window; all I need to do is go to another tab. The system monitor showed that one of the cores was saturated. I ran top like you did and found Seamonkey's usage was around 14%, but Xorg's usage was 80% or so. Minimizing Seamonkey's window drops the CPU usage down to nil; unminimizing it again saturates a core. Painfully slow graphics rendering
I have used Mozilla browsers on Linux since Netscape Navigator. I'm currently using Seamonkey 2.9.1, but I have noticed this problem for many versions. If I go to a graphics intensive site like maps.google.com or www.zillow.com, Seamonkey saturates one of my processor's cores and it becomes very slow to respond. Specifically, on maps.google.com, changing from the map display to the satellite display is painfully slow. Zillow just saturates one of my processor's cores most of the time. I thought it might be a problem with Seamonkey, so I tried Firefox. Same results. I recalled Netscape 4.79 not having the problem, but I don't have the correct libraries to run it. I tried Opera 11.64 this afternoon and it does NOT have the problem. Apparently the code that does the graphics for Seamonkey/Firefox assumes one has a super-humongous gaming graphics card. I do not. I have an EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR Geforce 8600gt 256mb 128-bit, which isn't the slowest card on the market. Its specs are: Manufacturer:nVidia Series:GeForce 8 GPU:G84 Release Date:2007-04-17 Interface:PCI-E x16 Core Clock:540 MHz Shader Clock:1180 MHz Memory Clock:700 MHz (1400 DDR) Memory Bandwidth:22.4 GB/sec FLOPS:113.28 GFLOPS Pixel Fill Rate:4320 MPixels/sec Texture Fill Rate:8640 MTexels/sec The performance I am seeing is not acceptable. Thank you both; that's the solution! 2. When I close down SM, it brings up the Acrobat Reader Splash Window, like it's briefly starting Acrobat Reader. Why is that? No clue. I never use the AR extension& turn it off by default. I prefer to have my AR run independent of the browser. I prefer to have PDFs opened up in Acrobat Reader, not SeaMonkey, as well. Which is why the plugin is disabled in my setup. Seems strange. Craig ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey
More questions about SM 2.1
Having gotten over most of my growing pains with the switch from 2.0.14 to 2.1 on my Linux box, I do have a couple of questions: 1. If I have several web browser tabs open, when I click on the "Open a new tab" button next to the left-most tab, the new tab is always opened at the extreme right of the existing tabs, regardless of which tab I am viewing. On the other hand, if I middle-click a link in one of the tabs, the new tab is opened to the right of the tab with the link and always right next to it. Middle-clicking a second link on the same tab opens a new tab to the right of the tab with the link, but to the left of the tab opened by the first middle-clicked link. Why this difference in behavior, and how can I make it work like it used to (always opening a new tab to the extreme right of the existing tabs)? 2. When I close down SM, it brings up the Acrobat Reader Splash Window, like it's briefly starting Acrobat Reader. Why is that? It works! Somehow I saw it when I first set up SeaMonkey 2.1 and thought it might be helpful. Then, when I went back to correct it, I didn't see it when I looked at the Content tab. Growing pains with Seamonkey 2.1
Now that I have gotten my bookmarks situation straightened out, I've run into a couple more problems: 1. In going to to some pages, I get a warning bar at the top of the window that says, "SeaMonkey prevented this page from automatically reloading." I click the Allow button, but after going away, the warning bar comes back saying the same thing. 2. In going to other pages, I have gotten a warning bar about re-directing. I clicked allow there and it didn't happen again. I know there must be a setting someplace, but I cannot find it (and I even checked the FAQ this time). Any suggestions? You can go to about:config and toggle the browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML pref to true. Then bookmarks.html will be written each time you exit SeaMonkey. Or you can do it manually using Tools/Export HTML from the Bookmarks Manager. Craig Or you could just Backup your bookmarks places.sqlite file using Bookmarks Manager > Tools > Backup. I backup to a USB stick after most additions. Yes, true, but then I could not compare the bookmarks.html files from different computers with the shell script that I wrote in May, 2000, and have updated since. And no, I don't want to use Sync and put my bookmark information on someone else's computer. How do bookmarks work now? They are stored in a file called places.sqlite, which is a database that also keeps your browsing history. Aha! Why was it changed? From <https://wiki.mozilla.org/SeaMonkey/2.1/FAQ#Bookmarks>: What are the benefits of Places-based bookmarks? Bookmarks are stored in a database now, together with your browsing history. This allows for better integration (Sync, the Location Bar and add-ons), automatic backups and the possibility to restore them, saving favicons with your bookmarks, and the ability to define tags. HTH It does, thanks. Also from https://wiki.mozilla.org/SeaMonkey/2.1/FAQ#Bookmarks, The bookmarks.html file is not updated anymore. What can I do?
