2020-09-23 Thread Larry S.
What changed? On the monitor, when listing messages (mail or news), I
now see an area on the right for events (today and future). In addition,
the symbol where I could click to review my log-ins, etc., has disappeared.

Something happened that caused this change. What was it? Help!

Home Page From Scratch

2020-03-20 Thread Larry S.
O.K., seems I was wrong in thinking my wife has saved her bookmarks--she
didn't. So, new request. She has clicked on "Export BM To HTML".

Then she went to "Browser", clicked On Start Up, found the page with
"Choose File" with the HTML page already listed in the box, and clicked
on "Okay".

Then she clicked on "Home" and got a long page (titled Bookmarks Menu)
full of stuff for Seamonkey (our browser) including the listing for the
Bookmark. Clicking on Manage Bookmarks, she was unable to eliminate all
the stuff other than the entry she wanted (the "real" bookmark). This
was unlike previous experience, in which one could eliminate extraneous
listings.

Maybe she should click on "Home" somewhere else, other than at the top
of a Seamonkey page? Where else can she find Home?

Are you sure it was a preference and not a certificate?
Preferences do

You are, of course, correct. It was cookies, not preferences. A

It may be something other than cookies.  My cookies are session
cookies only and I can view Fox News ok.  At the end of each session
they are all deleted.  You could try changing your UA string to
Firefox 72.0.1 instead of FF 52.0 and see if it helps.

How would I do that?

In the url bar, enter about:config
Enter general
Look for general.useragent.override and click on it.
Enter Firefox/72.0.1
Close and reopen SM and see if Fox News now works.
Make note of the changes that you made in case they do not work and you
have to remove them.
O.K., it didn't work. Still get the message "You don't have permission

Assuming the new installation has only an empty address book, you should

You don't need to save or bookmark anything. In any browser window,
just click the SeaMonkey icon at the far right of the toolbar (this

"Release Notes" in the top middle of that page.

1) back up your profile;

Not that uninstalling the previous version is a bad idea, but: I thought
it was only essential if moving between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

I think you are correct. I removed the earlier version first, but now

Anyone seen this and does anyone have a solution. It's not the end of

This email has been checked for viruses by AVG.

Q: If you completely removed the filter, along with email forwarding
within the filter, do you still receive an error message when sending
emails? That will at least eliminate your filter as being the cause of
the problem.  Gut instinct tells me, although I could be wrong, one
may not have anything to do with the other.

Sending normal email to any address using the same outgoing server works
fine with no error. The error only occurs when receiving email and
forwarding it using a filter.

This is a  new install. I have disabled the outgoing email check and
signature, that was a mistake. But the problem goes back several
versions of SeaMonkey, I just never decided to try to see if I could fix
it..

What is the server through which you are having the messages forwarded
to one or all of the people in your office? Do you have the password for
that server?

Quoting that page:

Firefox writes the sessionstore.js file to disk every 15 seconds, to
be able to restore tabs after a crash or restart. Certain sites can
make the sessionstore.js file grow very large leading to poor
performance, this addon can help identify which tabs store unusually
large amounts of data (form data, DOM sessionStorage, or many
subframes/history states).

See also:

Thank you, Mason, for your insights. Your reply helps me understand the
purpose of the file, but it doesn't fully address my concerns. I don't
seem to have a "Sessionstore.js" as your reference discussed (but do
have a json in many versions).

Yes, the format of the file was changed at some point.
Hence .js => .json

In addition to the json and bak (alone) versions, I have fourteen json
versions numbered 1 through 14, with dates stretching back almost six
years. It's those I still wonder about.

Here's my suggestion.

Close SM. Move all the sessionstore files to a temp directory
somewhere out of the way. Start SM. Confirm everything is
working as usual. You can keep the backups around for a few
days, then you can delete them.

Regards.

Thank you, Mason, for your insights. Your reply helps me understand the
purpose of the file, but it doesn't fully address my concerns. I don't
seem to have a "Sessionstore.js" as your reference discussed (but do
have a json in many versions).

Yes, the format of the file was changed at some point.
Hence .js => .json

Regards.

Good suggestion. I'll move them, and report later in the week.

That is NOT necessary for the ESR version of Firefox. I know, because
I switched to it myself when Mozilla decided to pull support for NPAPI

Seamonkey is currently based on an even older version of Firefox so
NPAPI plugins are still supported (for now).

Your company should update its Java based application. Java plugins are
outdated, and will be deprecated from Java 9 onwards. There are other
ways to run a Java application from within a browser.

No 64 bit version of Firefox or Seamonkey supports a Java plugin.

Don't keep us in suspense. What are the "other ways to run a Java

It looks like Joe has solved the problem, but just to clear up this
point... mail and newsgroup posts are not sent via the same

is sent to an SMTP server (and received via a POP or IMAP server).
Newsgroup posts are sent to an NNTP server (and received via the same
server). It's entirely possible to post to an NNTP (newsgroup) server
without a working SMTP (outbound mail) server.

Nice to know that. Thanks. Now I better understand why the OP was
able to
send a post and not able to send a mail.
Here to post this message to news.mozilla.org I used the SMTP server
provided by my ISP.
How is it possible to post to news.mozilla.org without using an
SMTP server ?

By definition newsgroups are accessed through the NNTP protocol
which is implemented on news servers. That is a separate means from
SMTP which is implemented on email servers.

I know newsgroups can be posted to using email clients, i.e. sending
an email because I did this when I started using newsgroups. I
don't know if you can read messages by email though. I don't know
if this requires a special email program that actually sends the
message by NNTP or if email has to be addressed to a server that
converts between SMTP and NNTP.

Is that any more clear?

Yes and no :-)
In fact, I will be interested to know HOW TO post here to
news.mozilla.org by using SeaMonkey without using any SMTP server ?

Both mozilla-lists.mbou...@spamgourmet.com and rickman have stated
that newsgroups don't use SMTP. I'm not sure why you don't believe them.

You asked how:
1. Go to a newsgroup.
2. Click "Compose".
3. Type your message, and click Send.
That's how. :)

You can test it by creating a new SeaMonkey profile, and creating a
newsgroups account for news.mozilla.org with no SMTP server, then
sending a post to mozilla.test.

I finally believed them, but MY news-group account to access
news.mozilla.org have my ISP smtp server written in the SM options for
this account.
I just look at that option and the only choices are all my smtp servers
and "Use Default Server" there is no "No SMTP server".
When reading your posting, I go to Edit>Mail and News Groups Account
Settings and under news.mozilla.org I click on Server Settings. There I
read "news.mozilla.org" (under the heading Server Type: News Server). Do
you get something different?

If you just want to test-drive it, go to duckduckgo.com.

If you want to make it your default search engine:

1) Go to Edit | Preferences | Browser | Internet Search and you'll see
"Default Search Engine" above a button with a down-arrow on the right,
which shows your current default search engine. Pull down the arrow to
reveal your options. If DuckDuckGo is listed, choose it, click "OK," and
you're done, that'll be your default search engine from now on.

2) If it's not in the pull-down list, it's not installed. Click "Manage
Search Engines" and then "Get more search engines...," which will take
you to <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/search/?atype=4>.
About halfway down, you'll see:

DuckDuckGo (HTTPS / SSL)
DuckDuckGo is the search engine that doesn't track you.
We also have smarter answers and less clutter. This
extension adds DuckDuckGo (HTTPS / SSL version) to the
search bar. For more features, see the DuckDuckGo Plus
add-on. Enjoy!

3) If you mouse over that, you'll see
+ Add to
Seamonkey

The rest is left as an exercise to the reader.

Thank you!Probably should have thought of that, but for some reason my

technologies based on XUL and friends. In SeaMonkey not so
much HTML right now, but this might need to change. The build
environment makes heavy use of Python.

- Graphics: Icons and symbols need a face lift for HiDPI screens. There
are plans to switch everything over to svg files in the backend which
would mean a massive effort to convert existing files. With a sometimes
extremely conservative user base when it comes to changes in the
interface, not an easy job

- Website: Some areas are severely outdated and things like release
notes need to be written too.

- Bug hunting and triaging: We could use a few more people to check out
bugs and try to reproduce and categorize them in Bugzilla. We are
especially short on people doing this on macOS. While we are on it.
Writing lengthy threads in the news and support groups is fine but if no
one actually reports them as a bug in the end they usually won't get fixed.

- Everything else not covered above. If we forgot something you can fill
this slot too. Just think about it.

As a final statement, we do not think that SeaMonkey will take over the
browser world any time soon. SeaMonkey is a niche product and will stay
that way. Too many people are not interested in a classic suite anymore
and most users are happy to use what is hip. That is OK with us. It's
all about choice.

We would like to continue supporting the power users like ourselves and
those who are looking for something different and flexible without

user base, for advice/orders/demands/suggestions. Of course, we won't be
able to implement everything under the sun. But we would still like to
implement something and stay current. It's your call now.

If you would like to support us, either send a mail to us, the SeaMonkey

You do not open it. You download it.

1. On the SeaMonkey menu bar, select [Tools > Add-ons Manager].

2. On the Add-ons Manager window, there is a button near the top-right
-- to the immediate left of "Search all add-ons" -- that has the image
of a machine gear. Select that button.

3. On the resulting pull-down context menu, select "Install Add-on From
File".

4. On the Select Add-on to install window, navigate to where the file
was downloaded.

5. Select the file.

6. Select the Open button.

7. If you get a popup that indicates you must enable installation, do
so; and then repeat the prior steps.

Thank you! I didn't understand that, but now have got it installed and
all is working well.

Larry, back in the dim, dark days (may have even been Mozilla Suite or
Netscape Suite), there was a file that got written to your harddisk
when you started the Suite. This was to stop two sessions of the Suite
being in operation at the same time. This file then got erased as part
of the normal Suite shutdown process.

However, if, for some reason, the computer/program crashed, this file
didn't get erased so, when you tried to re-start the Suite, it was a
no-go, because the Suite thought there was already a copy of the Suite
running.

Your mentioning that it still appeared on the task manager makes me
think this could be your situation!!

If this system still applies, maybe someone will remember what that

If this system still applies, maybe someone will remember what that
marker program was called, and tell you, so that you can delete it.

I think webappsstore is used for "Offline Storage", which I've disabled

one's so small for me. I guess it might be worth trying to clear offline
storage data for websites which you don't need it (at the same

Also, I have DOM inspector and Javascript debugger both disabled, and
never use them.

Could (should)I delete any of these files? Would doing so create any
problems for me? Other thoughts about the slow response?

I don't expect removing the DOM Inspector and Javascript Debugger
extensions would make much difference, particularly as they're disabled.
The Javascript Debugger which used to be included in a default
installation of SeaMonkey isn't compatible with recent versions of
SeaMonkey (2.29 on I believe), so you may as well remove it. DOM
Inspector is still usually [1] included; you should be able to remove it
if you don't use or want it, but I doubt doing so will help much with
general responsiveness since it's already disabled.

[1] Not in 2.46 due to build issues, although it can be installed
separately and you've probably already got it from a previous version of
SeaMonkey.

My "places" is 51Mb and "webappstore" is 9Mb. I looked into off-line
storage, and it shows 0 (I cleared it anyhow, just in case, but nothing
happened). Thus I suspect that the "webappstore" isn't, in fact,
something to do with off-line activity. Oh, well, still not finding the

Most .sqlite files (which are actually databases) are likely important.
They include not only cookies (which you might not want) but also your
bookmarks, information on extensions you installed, and permissions you
have granted or prohibited.

The problem with .sqlite databases is that, when entries are removed,
the spaces for the removed entries remain. Also, Mozilla in its
"wisdom" (??) causes some .sqlite databases to be initialized for more
entries than are necessary.

You might try SpeedyFox from <http://www.crystalidea.com/speedyfox>.
This application removes empty spaces and otherwise cleans up .sqlite
databases. It works not only for SeaMonkey but also for Firefox,
Thunderbird, Skype, and any other application that uses the SQLite
database application. To use SpeedyFox after you install it, select
SpeedyFox from its menu bar and add the various profiles you want cleaned.

SpeedyFox sounds good. However, when I try to download it I get the
message "The download cannot be saved because an unknown error
occurred". This has happened numerous times.

Any suggestions?

Is it really a plugin? Or is it an extension? In either case, first
test what happens if it is disabled. Go to [Tools > Add-ons Manager] on
the SeaMonkey menu bar.

If it is an extension, select Extensions on the left side of the Add-ons
Manager window. On the Extensions pane, find the extension and select
the Disable button.

If it is a plugin, select Plugins on the left side of the Add-ons
Manager window. On the Plugins pane, find the plugin and select the
pull-down menu to the right. Select "Never Activate".

If you see nothing adverse over one or two weeks, it can be removed.

To remove an extension repeat the process of disabling it, but select
the Remove button for it. No, you do not have to enable it before
removing it.

To remove a plugin, launch the Windows Control Panel and select Programs
and Features. Find the plugin in the list of programs, right-click, and
select Uninstall.

I assumed it was a plugin, since it was listed with plugins in the
Add-Ons Manager. However, it's not listed in the Programs and Features
portion of the Control Panel. There is no Remove button with it.

At present I have one computer running Win 7 . I am trying to use Seamonkey for
both browsing and mail . As mentioned in previous posts I have been using the
Webmail interface to read / reply my mail on the ISP's mailserver. My mail has
piled up and the postmaster is after me to clear some space :-)
I would like to download all the mail (inbox/sent etc) to my computer and
delete all mail on the ISP's server. The ISP recommends using IMAP rather than
POP mail. I looked at the settings for mail in Seamonkey and the choices
confuse me. I hate to make the wrong choices and loose all that data.

Under Mail & News groups Account settings -> copies & folders->
When sending messages place a copy Sent Folder [1] folder on xxx @ shaw.ca or
[2] local folder

There are similar choices for message archives, drafts and templates but no
mention of inbox .

Under Mail & News groups Account settings ->synchronization & space , there is a place to
tick for "keep messages for this account on this computer" but nothing else .

So I am confused and concerned about messing things up :-)

harsha godavari

I have 3 computers that I use for access to 1 IMAP account on 1&1
Internet ISP and I love that they are synchronized so that what is
deleted on one is deleted on all. But, I do have the problem of running
out of space on the server. Deleting the Trash helps but every once in
a while I have to clear out my Inbox.

Since you are using only 1 computer the easiest solution to "How do you
setup synchronisation with simultaneous deletion of the source?" is to
set up a POP mail account with your ISP in the mail client portion of
Sea Monkey.

Initially, set up POP to read but Leave Mail on server. Some eMails do
not allow this, yahoo comes to mind. Once you satisfy yourself that you
can delete from the POP mail Inbox on your computer, etc. without
deleting mail on your ISP's server and deleted mail from your ISP's
server has no effect on what has already been downloaded to your
computer you can set up POP mail to Delete Mail from the server as it is
downloaded.

I have POP mail accounts set up on all 3 of my computers but they are
not used and do not download until I am ready. When my ISP complains I
download into all POP accounts and then empty out my ISP IMAP Inbox and
trash folder. My choice is to empty out myself instead of letting the
3rd POP mail account Delete Mail from the server as it is downloaded.

Also, use [1]. Could not find: "->synchronization & space ."

Hope this helps.

If it works, it's good; if it doesn't, it's bad. Only a Chase customer
can tell us. I can't log in because I don't bank with them. My bank is
fine with SeaMonkey.

The idea is good, but it's essentially a twist on "advertise Firefox
compatibility". Depending on the sniffer, it _may_ work to change the
order, so that Firefox is last. However, because Chase is committed to
brand name of browser, it looks like the presence of _anything_ in a UA
string that's not stock Firefox, that will cause them to complain about
an unsupported browser.

Unfortunately, I don't think any amount of complaining to Chase customer
service is likely to change how they handle things.

Smith

How does one go about changing the user agent string in SM2.40? Could
not easily find that information.

I contacted Chase Tech Support today and was told this was the first
time they heard there was a problem and I was the first caller. If we
want Chase to fix the problem we have to get their attention with enough
calls to tie up their web tech support phone lines. Don't forget to
escalate to a supervisor.

If you want the lic just back up you data install and let Win 10
activate and then go back to 7 until the bugs and privacy issues are
ironed out. The next update will appear on August 2 and you can do all

Your profile location is the same in W10 as in W7, so that's not an

If you're still nervous, best thing I can recommend is to turn off your
antivirus during the upgrade, just to be sure it doesn't actively block
anything during the process. Once the upgrade is done, turn your AV

Yes it is compatible with Windows 10 (although I see Windows 10 isn't
listed under System Requirements, looks like it needs updating). You
shouldn't have to do anything, it should just work. I have upgraded 3

Check your display options. If you have SeaMonkey set to show only
unread messages, or only threads with unread messages, messages or
entire threads can seem to "disappear" when they no longer qualify.

With the cursor in the relevant newsgroup:

View | Messages: All/Unread/...

and

View | Threads: All/Unread/Threads with Unread/Watched Threads with
Unread/Ignored Threads...

As a general rule, SeaMonkey will not "recalculate" while you're in a
particular newsgroup; it only does so if you leave and then return. So a
message won't vanish before your very eyes the moment you read it.

In the case where you have SM set to show all messages in threads with
unread, you could post a message, read it, navigate away, and return to
find it "gone," but then when someone replied, the thread would qualify
for display again and all messages in that thread would reappear as soon
as you entered the NG.

Thank you, Paul. I actually knew this, but forgot it during a brain
fade! My settings for View are Threads With Unread and Messages All.

I looked in my Cache directory and found Cache, and Cache2. Cache2 had
two sub-directories, Doomed (empty) and Entries. Entries had 5280

I, too, emptied out the Cache2/Entries folder. However, I also have a

I also have Cache.Trash25143, which only contains sub-folder B, which is

See bug #368265 at <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=368265>.

The problem seems to have gone away, at least for cases where the user
has only one account at the Web site. If there is more than one
account, it becomes necessary for the same password to be used for all
the accounts. That is because Password Manager does not have access to
the user ID on the prior Web page and thus cannot tell which password is
appropriate.

I'm beginning to suspect that some web developers are starting to use
two-page login forms deliberately to prevent their users from using
password managers on the assumption they won't be secure, rather than
leaving it up to their users to ensure they store their passwords
securely. In which case, even if something is done in the browser which
works most of the time, those web developers may make sure they hit the
conditions for it to not work for their site and the whole cycle would
start again...

Some of it may be a way of defending against passwords "remembered"
(whether in the browser, as with Mozilla, or in the way that IE keeps
stuff in the Windows registry). Given the antipathy of some developers
towards Mozilla (including the long-time problem of improper sniffing
methodologies, looking explicitly for "Firefox", rather than "Gecko",
and sometimes causing for Gecko browsers that aren't Firefox), I think
there's some number of developers that aren't really thinking much about
the Mozilla method of handling passwords.

However, I think developers are more focused on defending against
script-based authentication (presumed to be malicious). By requiring
multiple user inputs, then it's far more difficult for an attacker to
present credentials -- not only valid credentials, but a way of
defending against brute-force guessing. And this kind of methodology
achieves a lot of the same kind of benefit as CAPTCHA, without annoying
users with CAPTCHA images that are difficult to decipher.

I've noticed that multiple-stage logins seem to be most common with
financial institutions.

I haven't checked it, but my suspicion is that a tool such as KeePass
might have capacity of scripting a multiple-stage login.

methodologies, looking explicitly for "Firefox", rather than "Gecko",
and sometimes causing for Gecko browsers that aren't Firefox), I think
there's some number of developers that aren't really thinking much about
the Mozilla method of handling passwords.

Yeah, I think the concern about letting the browser remember passwords
is more those which don't need the user to enter a master password to
access them. Even if the passwords are encrypted, if the user doesn't
have to enter a password to get at them the decryption key must be
stored somewhere on the system, so is just as accessible to anyone able
to steal the password database.

I think this is particularly true with Internet Explorer -- I've always
found Microsoft's methodologies of "remembering" passwords via the
registry to be sloppy, and that they're far too aggressive about
offering to remember, and where it's too difficult to rescind, if the
user changes their mind, or accidentally remembers, when they don't want
to.

Although that stuff is encoded, it's not encrypted (and no requirement
for user authentication for access, beyond having a valid login for
Windows). To me, that's a security-by-obscurity thing, where it seems
likely that a script writer who knows what he is doing should be able to
extract that content from the registry. I've always been surprised that
the security experts don't push Microsoft a lot harder on that one,
although it's entirely possible that there's something that I'm missing.

However, I have seen reviews of comparative browser security, and
working from memory, I remember seeing that without a password, Mozilla
rates medium or medium-to-low, and below Google Chrome, but I think
about even with Internet Explorer. However, with the master password,
Mozilla is at the top.

I do know this -- using the various password recovery tools from
Nirsoft, it's pretty easy to extract remembered passwords. If I'm
troubleshooting on somebody's machine, I will occasionally run these
tools (with the user present), as a way of demonstrating the
vulnerability of passwords saved in the browser (if not protected by a
master password).

Letting the user use a password manager
might even makes it more likely that they'll choose a more secure
password (longer, more difficult to guess) since they don't have to
remember it.

I think also that a majority of developers don't really account for the
idea of using third-party password managers. There's a comparatively few
number of people who use them, and from a development stand point,
trying to account for them merely adds complexity, and their focus tends
to be on facilitating the lowest common denominator of non-technical
user. That, in itself, is a challenge, because there's still far too
many many people who want one-button convenience, and where the
mechanics of proper authentication are an annoyance.

However, I think developers are more focused on defending against
script-based authentication (presumed to be malicious). By requiring
multiple user inputs, then it's far more difficult for an attacker to
present credentials -- not only valid credentials, but a way of
defending against brute-force guessing.

Perhaps that's also part of it. But it only doubles the number of
requests needed to brute force the password (assuming the username has
to be entered again after each attempt at the password). There are more
effective ways of slowing that down, such as only allowing say 5
attempts for a given username before locking the account for 5 minutes
(if the error message doesn't differentiate between incorrect
username/password and account locked, the attacker won't be able to use
that to know if they've got the username right). Most users aren't
delayed at all, but an attacker can only make 5 attempts every 5
minutes, and may not even know that that's what the limit is (so might
even happen to try the correct password while the account is locked).

True, although there is definitely a "speed bump" effect, if you you
have to click on a graphical button that takes you to another page, and
then requires subsequent data entry.

And more sites are moving to setups that do lock-outs after multiple
failed authentication. Thus, for the bad guys, there's a lot more
emphasis of finding places where passwords have been reused.

Consider:
http://www.eweek.com/security/sentry-mba-uses-credential-stuffing-to-hack-sites.html.

The place where this is especially problematic is that so many sites use
email addresses as user IDs, and there's an implied encouragement to end
users to use the same passwords with those IDs. Thus, if an intruder
can get a password

It may be possible to do something that tries to work it out, but it
probably wouldn't be completely reliable (and then people would
probably complain about the odd time it doesn't get it right). Even
determining that a given field is for a username, and not a search
term or some other bit of information, is not necessarily easy.

Logically, it should be possible. Suppose the password manager has a
record with
domain
login "YourName"
password "StealMe"
When the user visits a page in that contains a "login"
field, it should know to enter "YourName." When the user clicks and is
taken to another page in that contains a "password"
field, it should know to enter "StealMe."

I don't claim that password managers are designed that way. But
logically it should be possible. It's like going to 411.com and asking
for a person's phone number on one page and the same person's street
address on another page -- both pieces of data are contained in the same
record, and the database returns one piece in response to one input and
the other piece in response to the other input.

That indeed is working for me.

So, what do I have to do to get it to work that way for me?

Separated User ID and Password

2016-03-15 Thread Larry S.
Once upon a time there was discussion here about Password Manager having
trouble when the log-in process asked for User ID, and then in a

Any advice? Anyone remember the answer (if there was one)?

SM Won't Open In Correct Profile--PROBLEM SOLVED

2016-02-06 Thread Larry S.

A big Thank You to all who helped solve the problem with my wife's computer:

Jonathan N. Little
Frank-Rainer Grahl
David Durgee
Mark Bourne
Philip Taylor
Daniel

You all contributed to one extent or another. This clearly shows the
value of this news group--I can't imagine a better resource.

Here's how we resolved it, with pieces from many of you (seems simple
once we really understood it).

It all started when we set up her "new" profile in her new computer,
copying same from a backup copy.

The first observation is that SM is installed and working, except that
we get the error message. Seems that SM is trying to do what it is told,
in three instructions:

(1)The file named in the error message is listed in Browser Preferences
in the box defining "Home".

(2)The Browser preference also says to display the Home page when the
browser opens.

(3)The Appearance preference says to open the Browser when SM starts.
Thus, SM is told to try to open a file that does not exist.

Two other clues: the "ini" file doesn't have an "ini" suffix, and the
"bookmarks" file doesn't have an "html" suffix. In both cases that
nevertheless is what they were (a belated discovery).

So, eventually we changed the Home box in Preferences to point to her
correct Profile, which did include the html file, restarted SM, and
voila!, fixed. SM starts on her Bookmarks page, and all is well.

Thank you all again. What a great (and patient) group!

Okay, stop! Just do this, step by step.

0) Close SeaMonkey...you will want to print this out or paste into a
temporary notepad window for reference

1) In Windows explorer go to
"C:\Users\Linda\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\"

2) What is the *actual* profile folder name there if it is not
"rtfmbopb.default"? In fact whatever it just is make a copy of that
folder within
"C:\Users\Linda\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\". Then
rename the copy to "linda.fixed". So now the profile you want total path
is:

  "C:\Users\Linda\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\linda.fixed"

3) In that profile folder find and open in notepad "prefs.js"

4) Search for "mailnews.start_page.enabled" and edit the line to match
below:

user_pref("mailnews.start_page.enabled", false);

5) Save "prefs.js"

6) Go to "C:\Users\Linda\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\" in Explorer

7) Rename "profiles.ini" to "profiles.ini.disabled"

8) Create a new "profiles.ini" and paste exactly below:

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/linda.fixed

9) Save the file as "profiles.ini", in Windows you may have to have the
option to DISABLE "Hide extensions of known file type" to prevent ".txt"
from being added.

10) Drag an temporary shortcut to Seamonkey to your desktop

11) Right-click on shortcut and select properties and edit Target to add
" -P default" so it should be:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe" -P default

12) Launch SeaMonkey from that shortcut to test.

If all goes well and it should, you can remove all profile folders
EXCEPT:

"C:\Users\Linda\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\linda.fixed"

Well? OP, did it fix your issue?

Analyzing further this "mess", it all started when we set up her "new"
profile in her new computer, copying same from a backup copy. Two
factors emerge. Part I:

The first thing that is apparent is that SM is installed and working,
except that we get the error message "The file
/C:/Users/Linda/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/SeaMonkey/Profiles/rtfmbopb.default/bookmarks.html
cannot be found." Seems that SM is trying to do what it is told, in
three instructions:

(1)This is exactly the file that is listed in Browser Preferences in the
box defining "Home". (2)The Browser preference also says to display the
Home page when the browser opens, and (3)the Appearance preference says
to open the Browser when SM starts. Thus, SM is told to try to open a
file that does not exist.

Could we just change what's in the Home box to the file where her
profile is located? (Note that the Home box entry starts with three
diagonals (///), not the one in the error message. Do that also?)

Maybe that could make the error message go away?

Part II:

She would like SM open in her Bookmarks list (see error message as an
example). Once we have "Home" properly defined, could we then have her
Bookmarks copied into an HTML file? I believe the way to do this is with
"about"config", and we've done it before, though not recently. (Should
work, since her bookmarks are contained in her profile.)

Would greatly welcome your thoughts and advice on these two steps.

Yes.

I think that is a Boolean 1|0 not a pointer to which profile. Changing
to 1 to 0 just means don't autostart with the last profile you used
without prompting. Wouldn't hurt.

But what I would do is *validate* the name of the actually profile DIR
name is the one you want. E.g. if the actual folder for Linda is
"12345678.Linda2" that the entry in the profile.ini is
"12345678.Linda2".

Yes, that's the way it reads in the ini file. Still brings up the old

Apologies if I've missed it, but could you post the exact error message
and the path it's complaining about? Feel free to anonymise the username
and random part of the profile folder name if you prefer, but make sure
it's still clear which path is the intended profile and which is the
wrong one.

Have you copied a files from one profile folder to another at any point
during setting up the profiles? I wonder if perhaps it's not the whole
profile that's being loaded from the wrong folder, but maybe the
"correct" profile has a reference to a path in the other profile folder.
That could happen if you copied configuration files from one profile to

work until you deleted the original profile.

I'm not certain offhand, but I think "1" means "start with the last
profile" and "0" means "don't start with the last profile", i.e. show
the profile manager dialog where you can select a profile. Since you're
having problems getting it to use the correct profile, it might help
anyway to set it to "0" and then select the right profile.

If you haven't already done so, it would be a good idea to make a backup
of all the profile folders (and profiles.ini) before messing around with
them too much.

Mark.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, it was copied from a backup copy made
with the old (now replaced) computer. What are the "configuration

Good pickup David. That is *exactly* what is wrong Larry. You could have
confirmed it with my long laborious steps ;-)

Larry, you have the preference setting "When Mail launches, show the
Start Page in message area" pointing to a file that *no longer* exists!
You can confirm this since you are using Windows with:

WinKey + R and enter

C:\Users\Linda\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\rtfmbopb.default

and look and there will be no "bookmarks.html" in that folder.

Your options to fix this are:

1) Create a blank text file "bookmarks.html" in the folder.

2) Find from backup the "bookmarks.html" and restore it to that folder

3) "Edit > Preferences Mail & Newsgroups > Mail Start Page" clear the
checkbox (What my setup is, you will just get a page in the area. BTW
same result as #1)

4) "Edit > Preferences Mail & Newsgroups > Mail Start Page" keep it
checked and click the "Restore Default" button and get the standard
builtin start page.

O.K., maybe we're on to something. However, there are a couple of problems:

But what I would do is *validate* the name of the actually profile DIR
name is the one you want. E.g. if the actual folder for Linda is
"12345678.Linda2" that the entry in the profile.ini is "12345678.Linda2".

Yes, that's the way it reads in the ini file. Still brings up the old
(now deleted) profile.

Here's the error message: "The file
/C:/Users/Linda/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/SeaMonkey/Profiles/rtfmbopb.default/bookmarks.html
cannot be found. Please check the location and try again." Maybe the
HTML file is the problem, but it should be out of the picture now that
that profile has been deleted.

About ready to give up.

There is a profiles.ini in %appdata%\mozilla\Seamonkey. If you delete the ini

see if the wrong profile is in it.

How do we fix this? All help gratefully appreciated!

The old profile was deleted from the ini file. The ini points to the
correct location. Still doesn't work.

Just to be sure: we can delete the ini file completely, and SM will
build it when it starts? How does the computer know where to go to find SM?

Note: the ini file's contents certainly appear to be an ini file, but
the file name doesn't say "ini", just Profiles". (It's different from
the folder named Profiles, which does contain the profile.)

It's probably because the shortcut she's using is hard-coded to open
that profile. Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties. On the
Shortcut tab look in the Start in: box. The path there likely ends with
-P oldprofilename. If she only has one profile left just delete that
text and it will open the only profile there is. If more than one
profile exists you need to change that text to the desired one. You
only need the part of the profile name AFTER the dot.

Good suggestion! We'll try it. Just to clarify--we type in the name of
the correct profile, that's the name after the dot following the random
name? Since there is no -p there now, should we put it in? What's the
proper format--a space, then -p, then another space, then the name? Or
just a space, then the name?

Larry S.

Use the profile name as shown by Profile Manager. In the Windows
shortcut, the Target should end with
\seamonkey.exe -p name

Darn--didn't work! Could be our mistake. We left in the quote marks
around the entry in the shortcut. Should they be eliminated? Will that
foul up Target? The message we got said that administrator privileges
required, which my wife does have. We proceeded as suggested, and got
the "file not found" from the wrong profile (same as before). Argghh!

Your thoughts?

Larry S.

If there are spaces in the path to seamonkey.exe, then quotes are needed
to bracket the path. The
-p name
should be outside of the quotes.

Yes, that's the way we have it.
