Home Page From Scratch
O.K., seems I was wrong in thinking my wife has saved her bookmarks--she didn't. So, new request. She has clicked on "Export BM To HTML". Then she went to "Browser", clicked On Start Up, found the page with "Choose File" with the HTML page already listed in the box, and clicked on "Okay". Then she clicked on "Home" and got a long page (titled Bookmarks Menu) full of stuff for Seamonkey (our browser) including the listing for the Bookmark. Clicking on Manage Bookmarks, she was unable to eliminate all the stuff other than the entry she wanted (the "real" bookmark). This was unlike previous experience, in which one could eliminate extraneous listings. Maybe she should click on "Home" somewhere else, other than at the top of a Seamonkey page? Mail is sent to an SMTP server (and received via a POP or IMAP server). Newsgroup posts are sent to an NNTP server (and received via the same server). It's entirely possible to post to an NNTP (newsgroup) server without a working SMTP (outbound mail) server. Nice to know that. Thanks. Now I better understand why the OP was able to send a post and not able to send a mail. Here to post this message to news.mozilla.org I used the SMTP server provided by my ISP. How is it possible to post to news.mozilla.org without using an SMTP server ? By definition newsgroups are accessed through the NNTP protocol which is implemented on news servers. That is a separate means from SMTP which is implemented on email servers. I know newsgroups can be posted to using email clients, i.e. sending an email because I did this when I started using newsgroups. I don't know if you can read messages by email though. I don't know if this requires a special email program that actually sends the message by NNTP or if email has to be addressed to a server that converts between SMTP and NNTP. Is that any more clear? Yes and no :-) In fact, I will be interested to know HOW TO post here to news.mozilla.org by using SeaMonkey without using any SMTP server ? Both mozilla-lists.mbou...@spamgourmet.com and rickman have stated that newsgroups don't use SMTP. I'm not sure why you don't believe them. You asked how: 1. Go to a newsgroup. 2. Click "Compose". 3. Type your message, and click Send. That's how. :) You can test it by creating a new SeaMonkey profile, and creating a newsgroups account for news.mozilla.org with no SMTP server, then sending a post to mozilla.test. I finally believed them, but MY news-group account to access news.mozilla.org have my ISP smtp server written in the SM options for this account. I just look at that option and the only choices are all my smtp servers and "Use Default Server" there is no "No SMTP server". When reading your posting, I go to Edit>Mail and News Groups Account Settings and under news.mozilla.org I click on Server Settings. There I read "news.mozilla.org" (under the heading Server Type: News Server). Do you get something different? technologies based on XUL and friends. In SeaMonkey not so much HTML right now, but this might need to change. The build environment makes heavy use of Python. - Graphics: Icons and symbols need a face lift for HiDPI screens. There are plans to switch everything over to svg files in the backend which would mean a massive effort to convert existing files. With a sometimes extremely conservative user base when it comes to changes in the interface, not an easy job - Website: Some areas are severely outdated and things like release notes need to be written too. - Bug hunting and triaging: We could use a few more people to check out bugs and try to reproduce and categorize them in Bugzilla. We are especially short on people doing this on macOS. While we are on it. Writing lengthy threads in the news and support groups is fine but if no one actually reports them as a bug in the end they usually won't get fixed. - Everything else not covered above. If we forgot something you can fill this slot too. Just think about it. As a final statement, we do not think that SeaMonkey will take over the browser world any time soon. SeaMonkey is a niche product and will stay that way. Too many people are not interested in a classic suite anymore and most users are happy to use what is hip. That is OK with us. It's all about choice. Also, I have DOM inspector and Javascript debugger both disabled, and never use them. Could (should)I delete any of these files? Would doing so create any problems for me? Other thoughts about the slow response? I don't expect removing the DOM Inspector and Javascript Debugger extensions would make much difference, particularly as they're disabled. The Javascript Debugger which used to be included in a default installation of SeaMonkey isn't compatible with recent versions of SeaMonkey (2.29 on I believe), so you may as well remove it. DOM Inspector is still usually [1] included; you should be able to remove it if you don't use or want it, but I doubt doing so will help much with general responsiveness since it's already disabled. [1] Not in 2.46 due to build issues, although it can be installed separately and you've probably already got it from a previous version of SeaMonkey. My "places" is 51Mb and "webappstore" is 9Mb. I looked into off-line storage, and it shows 0 (I cleared it anyhow, just in case, but nothing happened). Thus I suspect that the "webappstore" isn't, in fact, something to do with off-line activity. Oh, well, still not finding the problem. Larry S. ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

Most .sqlite files (which are actually databases) are likely important. They include not only cookies (which you might not want) but also your bookmarks, information on extensions you installed, and permissions you have granted or prohibited. The problem with .sqlite databases is that, when entries are removed, the spaces for the removed entries remain. Also, Mozilla in its "wisdom" (??) causes some .sqlite databases to be initialized for more entries than are necessary. You might try SpeedyFox from <http://www.crystalidea.com/speedyfox>. This application removes empty spaces and otherwise cleans up .sqlite databases. It works not only for SeaMonkey but also for Firefox, Thunderbird, Skype, and any other application that uses the SQLite database application. To use SpeedyFox after you install it, select SpeedyFox from its menu bar and add the various profiles you want cleaned. SpeedyFox sounds good. However, when I try to download it I get the message "The download cannot be saved because an unknown error occurred". This has happened numerous times. Any suggestions? Larry S. My mail has piled up and the postmaster is after me to clear some space :-) I would like to download all the mail (inbox/sent etc) to my computer and delete all mail on the ISP's server. The ISP recommends using IMAP rather than POP mail. I looked at the settings for mail in Seamonkey and the choices confuse me. I hate to make the wrong choices and loose all that data. Under Mail & News groups Account settings -> copies & folders-> When sending messages place a copy Sent Folder [1] folder on xxx @ shaw.ca or [2] local folder There are similar choices for message archives, drafts and templates but no mention of inbox . Under Mail & News groups Account settings ->synchronization & space , there is a place to tick for "keep messages for this account on this computer" but nothing else . So I am confused and concerned about messing things up :-) regards harsha godavari I have 3 computers that I use for access to 1 IMAP account on 1&1 Internet ISP and I love that they are synchronized so that what is deleted on one is deleted on all. But, I do have the problem of running out of space on the server. Deleting the Trash helps but every once in a while I have to clear out my Inbox. Since you are using only 1 computer the easiest solution to "How do you setup synchronisation with simultaneous deletion of the source?" is to set up a POP mail account with your ISP in the mail client portion of Sea Monkey. Initially, set up POP to read but Leave Mail on server. Some eMails do not allow this, yahoo comes to mind. Once you satisfy yourself that you can delete from the POP mail Inbox on your computer, etc. without deleting mail on your ISP's server and deleted mail from your ISP's server has no effect on what has already been downloaded to your computer you can set up POP mail to Delete Mail from the server as it is downloaded. I have POP mail accounts set up on all 3 of my computers but they are not used and do not download until I am ready. When my ISP complains I download into all POP accounts and then empty out my ISP IMAP Inbox and trash folder. My choice is to empty out myself instead of letting the 3rd POP mail account Delete Mail from the server as it is downloaded. Also, use [1]. Could not find: "->synchronization & space ." You're thinking like a human being, silly! Some sniffers reject a UA string that contains "SeaMonkey" even if it also contains "Firefox." That's why the solution in this thread worked -- because Chase's sniffer is that stupid. You have to pretend to be Firefox AND pretend not to be SeaMonkey. I just thinked that the sniffer will only use the last "word" which is in this case "Firefox/41.0" instead of in the normal UAstring the last "word" is "SeaMonkey/2.38" So could be better to have the default string this: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:41.0) Gecko/20100101 SeaMonkey/2.38 same as Firefox/41.0 instead of this: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:41.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/41.0 SeaMonkey/2.38 Is my idea a bad idea ? If it works, it's good; if it doesn't, it's bad. Only a Chase customer can tell us. I can't log in because I don't bank with them. My bank is fine with SeaMonkey. The idea is good, but it's essentially a twist on "advertise Firefox compatibility". Depending on the sniffer, it _may_ work to change the order, so that Firefox is last. However, because Chase is committed to brand name of browser, it looks like the presence of _anything_ in a UA string that's not stock Firefox, that will cause them to complain about an unsupported browser. Unfortunately, I don't think any amount of complaining to Chase customer service is likely to change how they handle things. Smith How does one go about changing the user agent string in SM2.40? Could not easily find that information. I contacted Chase Tech Support today and was told this was the first time they heard there was a problem and I was the first caller. Anyways, I manually deleted them in cmd.exe with "rmdir /s" command. Wow, that took forever to finish! Thank you in advance. :) I a;so see this in Windows 7 with SeaMonkey 2.40. The problem is that several specialized caches are not in the directory where the user has requested caches to be stored. I see no good reason why there are specialized caches. See the bug reports at <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=804731> and <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=864047>. Also see the bug report that is supposed to be tracking bug reports about caches at <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=559729>. I looked in my Cache directory and found Cache, and Cache2. Cache2 had two sub-directories, Doomed (empty) and Entries. Entries had 5280 files. This took a while to empty. I, too, emptied out the Cache2/Entries folder. However, I also have a Cache folder (which empties out per entry in Edit>Properties>Cache>Empty Cache). I also have Cache.Trash25143, which only contains sub-folder B, which is empty. Finally, I have Cache.Trash15551. Can I also empty that one out? Larry S. ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

Yeah, I think the concern about letting the browser remember passwords is more those which don't need the user to enter a master password to access them. Even if the passwords are encrypted, if the user doesn't have to enter a password to get at them the decryption key must be stored somewhere on the system, so is just as accessible to anyone able to steal the password database. I think this is particularly true with Internet Explorer -- I've always found Microsoft's methodologies of "remembering" passwords via the registry to be sloppy, and that they're far too aggressive about offering to remember, and where it's too difficult to rescind, if the user changes their mind, or accidentally remembers, when they don't want to. Although that stuff is encoded, it's not encrypted (and no requirement for user authentication for access, beyond having a valid login for Windows). To me, that's a security-by-obscurity thing, where it seems likely that a script writer who knows what he is doing should be able to extract that content from the registry. I've always been surprised that the security experts don't push Microsoft a lot harder on that one, although it's entirely possible that there's something that I'm missing. However, I have seen reviews of comparative browser security, and working from memory, I remember seeing that without a password, Mozilla rates medium or medium-to-low, and below Google Chrome, but I think about even with Internet Explorer. However, with the master password, Mozilla is at the top. I do know this -- using the various password recovery tools from Nirsoft, it's pretty easy to extract remembered passwords. If I'm troubleshooting on somebody's machine, I will occasionally run these tools (with the user present), as a way of demonstrating the vulnerability of passwords saved in the browser (if not protected by a master password). Letting the user use a password manager might even makes it more likely that they'll choose a more secure password (longer, more difficult to guess) since they don't have to remember it. I think also that a majority of developers don't really account for the idea of using third-party password managers. There's a comparatively few number of people who use them, and from a development stand point, trying to account for them merely adds complexity, and their focus tends to be on facilitating the lowest common denominator of non-technical user. That, in itself, is a challenge, because there's still far too many many people who want one-button convenience, and where the mechanics of proper authentication are an annoyance. However, I think developers are more focused on defending against script-based authentication (presumed to be malicious). By requiring multiple user inputs, then it's far more difficult for an attacker to present credentials -- not only valid credentials, but a way of defending against brute-force guessing. Perhaps that's also part of it. But it only doubles the number of requests needed to brute force the password (assuming the username has to be entered again after each attempt at the password). There are more effective ways of slowing that down, such as only allowing say 5 attempts for a given username before locking the account for 5 minutes (if the error message doesn't differentiate between incorrect username/password and account locked, the attacker won't be able to use that to know if they've got the username right). Most users aren't delayed at all, but an attacker can only make 5 attempts every 5 minutes, and may not even know that that's what the limit is (so might even happen to try the correct password while the account is locked). True, although there is definitely a "speed bump" effect, if you you have to click on a graphical button that takes you to another page, and then requires subsequent data entry. And more sites are moving to setups that do lock-outs after multiple failed authentication. Thus, for the bad guys, there's a lot more emphasis of finding places where passwords have been reused. Consider: http://www.eweek.com/security/sentry-mba-uses-credential-stuffing-to-hack-sites.html. The place where this is especially problematic is that so many sites use email addresses as user IDs, and there's an implied encouragement to end users to use the same passwords with those IDs. Thus, if an intruder can get a password

It may be obvious to you that you're being asked for a username and password. It may be possible to do something that tries to work it out, but it probably wouldn't be completely reliable (and then people would probably complain about the odd time it doesn't get it right). Even determining that a given field is for a username, and not a search term or some other bit of information, is not necessarily easy. Logically, it should be possible. Suppose the password manager has a record with domain login "YourName" password "StealMe" When the user visits a page in that contains a "login" field, it should know to enter "YourName." When the user clicks and is taken to another page in that contains a "password" field, it should know to enter "StealMe." I don't claim that password managers are designed that way. But logically it should be possible. It's like going to 411.com and asking for a person's phone number on one page and the same person's street address on another page -- both pieces of data are contained in the same record, and the database returns one piece in response to one input and the other piece in response to the other input. That indeed is working for me. So, what do I have to do to get it to work that way for me? It all started when we set up her "new" profile in her new computer, copying same from a backup copy. The first observation is that SM is installed and working, except that we get the error message. Seems that SM is trying to do what it is told, in three instructions: (1)The file named in the error message is listed in Browser Preferences in the box defining "Home". (2)The Browser preference also says to display the Home page when the browser opens. (3)The Appearance preference says to open the Browser when SM starts. Thus, SM is told to try to open a file that does not exist. Two other clues: the "ini" file doesn't have an "ini" suffix, and the "bookmarks" file doesn't have an "html" suffix. In both cases that nevertheless is what they were (a belated discovery). So, eventually we changed the Home box in Preferences to point to her correct Profile, which did include the html file, restarted SM, and voila!, fixed. Analyzing further this "mess", it all started when we set up her "new" profile in her new computer, copying same from a backup copy. Two factors emerge. Part I: The first thing that is apparent is that SM is installed and working, except that we get the error message "The file /C:/Users/Linda/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/SeaMonkey/Profiles/rtfmbopb.default/bookmarks.html cannot be found." Seems that SM is trying to do what it is told, in three instructions: (1)This is exactly the file that is listed in Browser Preferences in the box defining "Home". (2)The Browser preference also says to display the Home page when the browser opens, and (3)the Appearance preference says to open the Browser when SM starts. Thus, SM is told to try to open a file that does not exist. Could we just change what's in the Home box to the file where her profile is located? (Note that the Home box entry starts with three diagonals (///), not the one in the error message. Do that also?) Maybe that could make the error message go away? Part II: She would like SM open in her Bookmarks list (see error message as an example). Once we have "Home" properly defined, could we then have her Bookmarks copied into an HTML file? I believe the way to do this is with "about"config", and we've done it before, though not recently. (Should work, since her bookmarks are contained in her profile.) E.g. if the actual folder for Linda is "12345678.Linda2" that the entry in the profile.ini is "12345678.Linda2". Yes, that's the way it reads in the ini file. Still brings up the old (now deleted) profile. Here's the error message: "The file /C:/Users/Linda/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/SeaMonkey/Profiles/rtfmbopb.default/bookmarks.html cannot be found. Please check the location and try again." Maybe the HTML file is the problem, but it should be out of the picture now that that profile has been deleted. About ready to give up. Larry S. Err... That's not a profile, that is a home page! You can change the settings for that in preferences. Dave Good idea, except that we can't open SM to that point. The error message comes first. Result: the "wrong" profile information was gone (!), but SM still opens with File Not Found referring to the wrong profile. Apologies if I've missed it, but could you post the exact error message and the path it's complaining about? Feel free to anonymise the username and random part of the profile folder name if you prefer, but make sure it's still clear which path is the intended profile and which is the wrong one. Have you copied a files from one profile folder to another at any point during setting up the profiles? I wonder if perhaps it's not the whole profile that's being loaded from the wrong folder, but maybe the "correct" profile has a reference to a path in the other profile folder. That could happen if you copied configuration files from one profile to another without adjusting any relevant paths, and may have appeared to work until you deleted the original profile. Question:(displaying our ignorance) should we have also edited the ini file so the first line "Start with last profile=1" be changed to point to profile 0 instead? I'm not certain offhand, but I think "1" means "start with the last profile" and "0" means "don't start with the last profile", i.e. show the profile manager dialog where you can select a profile. Since you're having problems getting it to use the correct profile, it might help anyway to set it to "0" and then select the right profile. If you haven't already done so, it would be a good idea to make a backup of all the profile folders (and profiles.ini) before messing around with them too much. Mark. Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, it was copied from a backup copy made with the old (now replaced) computer. What are the "configuration files"? I only know about the "ini" file, which has been discussed in this thread. The only other choice that I know about is the "start in" entry in the shortcut properties, also discussed. Neither seems to make a difference, even if corrected per advice received here. ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

You can change the settings for that in preferences. Good pickup David. That is *exactly* what is wrong Larry. You could have confirmed it with my long laborious steps ;-) Larry, you have the preference setting "When Mail launches, show the Start Page in message area" pointing to a file that *no longer* exists! You can confirm this since you are using Windows with: WinKey + R and enter C:\Users\Linda\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\rtfmbopb.default and look and there will be no "bookmarks.html" in that folder. Your options to fix this are: 1) Create a blank text file "bookmarks.html" in the folder. 2) Find from backup the "bookmarks.html" and restore it to that folder 3) "Edit > Preferences Mail & Newsgroups > Mail Start Page" clear the checkbox (What my setup is, you will just get a page in the area. BTW same result as #1) 4) "Edit > Preferences Mail & Newsgroups > Mail Start Page" keep it checked and click the "Restore Default" button and get the standard builtin start page. O.K., maybe we're on to something. However, there are a couple of problems: -- the profile rtfmbobp, default no longer exists, as it was deleted from profile manager. -- we can't even get to preference settings, in that SM never opens to that point. The error message comes first. Bummer! ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

Eventually she got the one she wanted, and deleted the others (in Profile Manager). Now when she clicks on the SM logo it wants to open one of the profiles she deleted, resulting in File Not Found because that profile no longer exists. It's probably because the shortcut she's using is hard-coded to open that profile. Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties. On the Shortcut tab look in the Start in: box. The path there likely ends with -P oldprofilename. If she only has one profile left just delete that text and it will open the only profile there is. If more than one profile exists you need to change that text to the desired one. You only need the part of the profile name AFTER the dot. Good suggestion! We'll try it. Just to clarify--we type in the name of the correct profile, that's the name after the dot following the random name? Since there is no -p there now, should we put it in? What's the proper format--a space, then -p, then another space, then the name? Or just a space, then the name? Larry S. Use the profile name as shown by Profile Manager. In the Windows shortcut, the Target should end with \seamonkey.exe -p name Darn--didn't work! Could be our mistake. We left in the quote marks around the entry in the shortcut. Should they be eliminated? Will that foul up Target? The message we got said that administrator privileges required, which my wife does have. We proceeded as suggested, and got the "file not found" from the wrong profile (same as before). Argghh! Your thoughts? Larry S. If there are spaces in the path to seamonkey.exe, then quotes are needed to bracket the path. The -p name should be outside of the quotes.
