I just installed Foxit and scanned it with AVG Free and Malwarebytes and had no
hits. It is a keeper.

No it is not. On Windows you can uninstall Foxit Cloud from the
standard Windows Programs and Features in Control Panel. I do it every

PDF handling tools is a class of software where most of the non-Adobe
alternatives are likely to be bundled with add-on software. That
doesn't mean that the tools are problematic, just that you have to be
careful, with installation, to make sure that you opt out of all the
stuff that's offered.

The one exception that I'm aware of is SumatraPDF, which is very small,
but it doesn't offer a plugin option that allows you to call it from
Seamonkey. And I have not yet found any free PDF writers (at least ones
that are virtual printers) that don't bundle add-ons in their
installers. (The exceptions that I know about are tools that allow
"save as" that include PDF as an option -- LibreOffice and the Opera
browser).

I don't believe that Foxit makes use of the OpenCandy scanner (An
installer with OpenCandy will scan your registry for what's installed,
then call home, then offer another download, based on what it finds).
That one is a privacy issue with the scanner. However, the downloads
offered may be scummy.

With Malware scanners (especially the ones that are more than
Anti-Virus), it's useful to pay attention to the results, of what is
reported. Some scanners can be over-aggressive, not distinguishing
something that's truly malicious from tools that offer Potentially
Unwanted Software, or even tracking cookies. Each of those has issues,
but they're of varying threat and severity. The problem with all-in-one
security suites (or scanners such as MBAM or SuperAntiSpyware), is that
they tend to cater to the people who consider security to be a yes/no
thing -- "I just want install a tool that I can set and forget, and then
I'll be secure!".

With Foxit, I haven't found significant issues with unwanted stuff.
There has been annoyance with them installing some sort of Cloud tool,
where it's uninstallable, but where there's no option of declining
installation -- and it comes back with each upgrade installation.
However, the last two or three times I've upgraded a machine that have
Foxit, I haven't seen the Cloud tool available for uninstall, meaning
it's either more closely bundled, or that they quit adding it.

I did run the most current installer through the scanner at
VirusTotal.com, and 54 scanners (including MalwareBytes) all report
negative -- no positives at all, not even by obscure scanners.

I should note that while I have no problem with recommending Foxit as a
credible alternative to Adobe, the thing with the Cloud reader was what
caused me to replace Foxit with PDFXChange Reader on my main working
machine. To me, PDFX feels a little lighter and faster than Foxit, but I
haven't really dug in that deep. However, PDFX does have bundled stuff,
and you have to be careful on installation, to make sure you decline the
extra junk. But once it's installed, I haven't found any problems.

BTW, I do owe you an apology, on version handling with Adobe. I
indicated that 10.1.4 was the most current 10.x release, and as you've
discovered, there's been several updates since (including one released
today). 10.x is still supported, but one of the things that both 10.x
and 11.x are now doing (since, apparently, they're not on Adobe's
current development track), that updates have to be individually
downloaded and applied. I haven't seen Reader 10 in some time, but my
experience with 11 is that if you use the Help -> check for updates
tool, instead of installing the latest update to 11, you'll get a forced
upgrade to the Continuous Track for Acrobat Reader DC.

WEB link that contains a pdf. As long as use SM without click on a link
with a pdf I have no problems. If open a pdf that is save it open with
AcroRd32.exe with no problem. When I close the Reader then it closes
completely and when I go to Task Manager it is not listed so it does
close. It is only when SeaMonkey call Adobe does it stay open, it as if
SM will not release it when done.

Maybe uninstall Adobe Acrobat and install Foxit?

You are using a cloud version of Adobe Reader (not "Acrobat Reader"). I
have been avoiding that because I do not use any cloud capabilities. I
have Adobe Reader 11.0.13.17, which is non-cloud.

Using SeaMonkey, I went to "To and Across Canada: Vancouver to Montréal"
at .
Scrolling down about two-thirds to the 11 August entry, there is the
link to "An
executive answered my letter". I opened that link -- a PDF file -- in a
new tab and returned to the "To and Across Canada: Vancouver to
Montréal" tab. I closed SeaMonkey, just quitting without saving the
current tabs. AcroRd32.exe does not appear in Task Manager's list. I
shut down Windows 7 without any problems.

I suggest you remove Adobe Reader DC 15.9.20069. Get the current
non-cloud version of Adobe Reader via FTP from
. The
installer for Windows is AdbeRdrUpd11013.msp. Try it to see if you
still have your problem.

Do CTRL-SHIFT-A or go to about:addons (same thing). On the left, choose
"Plugins." In the list, you'll see "Adobe Acrobat" with a button on the
right, "Ask to Activate." Pull it down and select "Always Activate."
Then you won't be prompted.

As noted elsewhere, you may want to reconsider your use of Acrobat
Reader, especially the DC edition.

Adobe's intention for the entire structure of PDF has been as an
enterprise-grade document management system. Acrobat as the composition
tool, and Reader as a way of access (and promoting Acrobat). Adobe's
vision is for people that interact frequently with PDF content,
including where PDF is far more than just a common-format document, but
extended support for things like email integration, encryption,
data-gathering forms, etc. Thus, for a common end-user, the capacity of
the Adobe Reader is massive overkill, and a corresponding expenditure of
resources (especially memory usage, to support all the plugins needed
for the extended features).

With the release of Acrobat Reader DC, Adobe is shifting to cloud-based
emphasis, including on-demand upgrade/purchase of additional services,
as well as providing cloud-based storage.

Beyond what you've done, other options to consider:

1) Downgrade to a previous version of Reader: 11.0.10 or 10.1.4, both of
which are still supported by Adobe. Adobe may whine about the older
versions not having all the latest features, but if all you need is a
quick view of PDF content, they're more than sufficient.

2) Remove Adobe entirely, and go with an alternate PDF reader. Foxit is
one option, PDFXChange Viewer is another. Both are smaller and faster
than Adobe, and both offer the option of installing as a plug-in, where
you can access from inside Seamonkey. I've used both, although my
personal preference is for PDFX, which feels a little faster than Foxit,
and also doesn't have nearly as much of the Win 8-style graphical
presentation.

Neither of these really address the problem that you're currently
having, but unless you're doing something that specifically requires the
capabilities of Acrobat Reader DC (or even Adobe), one of the other
readers may work better for you.

Thank every much for the reply! I will look into the options you have
listed going with older version of Adobe or one of the two alternate PDF
