I think you can do this with the extension Headers Tool Lite...
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/header-tools-lite

Onno

I just got around to installing this Extension and it works exactly as I
had hoped.

-Right-click on a highlighted message's subject/title/name in the Thread
Pane

- select HeaderToolsLite from context menu

- change what you want.

no more will I have to stare at USELESS subjects/titles/names for
important messages in my Inbox

For anyone else out there that essentially uses SM as their day
planner / to-do list, this is priceless.

Instead of sending it to yourself, you should be able to save as draft
and then move it from the Drafts folder to where you want it to be.

On the menu bar, go to [File Save As File]. Change the name in the
Save Message As navigation window to the name you really want, and save
it to a folder for such messages. When you go to open such a file (an
.eml file), it will open in a SeaMonkey Mail-News window.

that's saving a message as a file outside of SM entirely, not renaming a
message. I'd seen that.

GW

Geoff, how about. when you find a message you want to keep,
1) Click Reply to the message,
2) Go Off-line
3) Edit the Subject so you know what it's about
4) Click Send Later
5) This stored the message in the Outbox of my Local Folders
6) Manually move this message into the SeaMonkey folder where you
want to store it
7) Go back on-line and continue reading.

This seems to work for me, except it appears as though I made the final
post in the saved message, when I didn't actually type anything, so my
name/email address/etc has replaced your name/email address/etc and the
message starts with David E. Ross wrote

It seems to me, that a very long time ago, it never occurred to the

creating the Subject line of messagesso Change Title was never
added to the context menus.

I mean seriously, we all have seen message subjects like Hows it going

I've often thought that the subject input point should
be the LAST PART of an email message, as often you don't
know what the subject should be until you've written the
message or added the file you want to send. It really takes
some thought to dream up a good subject line BEFORE you
write your message, most people aren't that gifted. I'm
not. I try to leave the subject blank, write my message
and then go back to write the subject title. Often forget,
and send an email with a blank title, unless the software
asks me to fill one in.

Like the subject of this post, it's really a part of the
body of the message post.
After writing this post, the writer would have some meat
to chew on and might have created the subject of this post as:
EDITING THE SUBJECT LINE OF INCOMING EMAIL
rather than: Can we rename messages somehow?

You don't have to send it. I do Edit as New, change the subject, Save

I've been thinking lately about creating an extension that adds
bookmarks to mail. This would allow you to not only store pointers to
messages you want and give them the name you like, but also use a folder
structure independent of the physical storage of the message to help you
structure them to be able to find them back more easily...

I'm sure either Netscape Communicator and/or Mozilla Suite had Bookmarks
accessible from the Mail Newsgroups Screen, so this should be doable!!

Well, there's always the hard way:

1) Within SeaMonkey, move the message to a folder where it will be the
oldest or only message, so it will appear first in the file. If you
like, create a temporary folder for the purpose. For discussion
purposes, let's call it FolderName. Ideally, it should have no subfolders.

2) Close SeaMonkey, locate the file FolderName (no extension) in your
SM profile directory.

3) Open it with Notepad or some other plain-text editor, edit the
Subject line in the header, save.

4) Relaunch SM, confirm that the subject line has been changed.

5) Drag and drop the message to the folder where you really want to
archive it.
