For some encodings, I can set the font size using the fonts
preference panel Editpreferencesappearancefonts,
But this does not work for example for unicode-8. which
is, understandably, not choosable via fonts-preferences.
In that case one needs a straight magnification/contraction
capability.
In my case for unicode-8 the font chosen/used by the system is
miniscule, and my sight is not all that good anymore. :-(
Anyway it would be most convenient in other cases as well.

The Unicode should generally be the Other Languages category, but
I've found it doesn't have any effect for me since quite some time,
also. Documents encoded using some UTF variant generally pick my
settings for Cyrillic fonts (probably picked up from my system
default encoding).

Saying the above, try adjusting your font size for all of:

Western
Central European
Cyrillic
Other Languages

to see if it would make difference for you when the
document/composition encoding is set to UTF-8.

For the first time since Seamonkey 2.0.14, I can zoom in to
my heart's content, instead of being restricted to the miserly
three levels of zoom that Ctrl + / Ctrl - now offer.

Now why is it that Ctrl mouse wheel can do it, yet
Ctrl + / Ctrl - cannot ?

And what if you've a mouse without a mousewheel?

It works with the touchpad on my netbook, for example - the gesture
used to scroll. For the rest, the default font size (possibly
adjusted by the user) when composing should be o.k. without need to
zoom in/out (see my second reply to this thread). I guess that's
why there's no Ctrl +/- key bindings in the composition window.

Because when you are composing mail, or a web page you have already set
the font size. You have already set the minium fort size to read a
message, or web page.

Try resetting Edit/Preferences/Appearance/Fonts to what ever you want to
read.

Mr. Gordon
Please try your own advice with messages that have unicode(UTF-8)
as their encoding. :-)
First to read and then to compose such. :-)

AFAIK, UTF-8 relates to either Other Languages or User Defined in
the Fonts for drop-down.

Thank you very much. It appears that your advice solves my problem.
This workaround is a well hidden trick. i.e. connecting screen zoom
to the mouse wheel.
Now if it'd just get documented. So it wasn't just a trick someone
discovered and remembered.
Thanks once more.
