Did he compact the Trash folder? I wasn't sure from his description
if he'd done that.

In every version of SeaMonkey I've ever had, telling the program to
compact folders has resulted in compaction of all folders within the
selected account, including Trash. But I suppose if he has it set up to
direct deletions to Trash in a different account, compacting the source
account would not affect that Trash folder.

I see that you can now right-click a folder and tell the program to
compact this folder, but that's new to me. I've always just done File
| Compact Folders and gotten them all in one pass.

I was astonished to read Justin's statement that compacting folders
could take as long as an hour. In my experience, it's never taken more
than about five minutes, and it usually takes less than two. And I'm not
working with some ultrafast multi-CPU machine, but I do have folders
with thousands of messages.

It's my understanding that the process can be more effective if you
File-Empty Trash before you Compact Folders.

Went ahead and compacted all folders one at a time again. This is the
3rd time I did this. The first time I just did FileCompact folders. The
second time I did them individually. (Right click, compact folder). The
3rd time I did them individually again. I do not know why compacting the
folders the previous 2 times did not fix the problem. I am pretty sure
the trash folder was the problem. Emails now delete properly.
Thanks for all your suggestions because they were helpful in the event I
missed something.

In one account, a while ago, I had over 40k mails (many due to
innordinate spam, and never really caring to actually filter it). Lets
just say, that I had deleted a good number of spam (or moved it in some
cases, if I found it humorous in the first place), as well as being
subscribed to many mailing lists, that I also had filters set to move to
different folders.

Lets just say that my compacting took about 49 minutes. It also wasn't
the fastest HD/CPU at the time, but that was an extreme case.

Bernie,

Can you try Compact on the folders you are experiencing this issue in,
(right click on the folder in the folder-list, and select the Compact
entry)

The action of compacting can take a while depending on many factors,
size of the message database being one of them.

So even if SeaMonkey seems to freeze when you do that, allow it to
continue running, (I'd say, max 1 hour should be sufficient even on slow
computers)

After that, restart seamonkey (and even your computer) to get the memory
use flushed, for certain, and then try again, let us know if this helps
your situation.

But why would anyone want to delete their email messages one at a time,

Anyway 2.4 is not far away, and maybe the developers will schedule a

In the past I would read the message and delete as necessary. This was
extremely fast. Some I might keep for future reference. This was never
in issue in the past but now it is. Maybe it is a just a habit of mine
to read and delete. I guess i should just read all the emails and then
bulk delete to get around the problem for now.

I do it all the time. I read a message, hit Del, read a message, hit
Del, etc. Sometimes I keep them, sometimes I reply, but a lot of times
I don't know I'm going to delete a message until I've read it.

Sometimes I can see from the author/subject that it's not worth reading,
but most of those are already in the Junk folder.

It would be annoying if I had to wait a few extra seconds after every
deletion before resuming my reading. Fortunately, I don't have that
problem in 2.2.
