You are running on a Mac?

The only thing I can think of which could cause that is moving from a
32-bit Seamonkey to a 64-bit version without uninstalling the 32-bit one
first, but that applies to Windows. No idea about Macs.

Sea Monkey email sender

2019-12-22 Thread Brian Mair

Hi,
I have an older computer and two new computers. All are Windows 10 based
and all fitted with Sea Monkey v 2.49.5. The mail Server Settings,
Account Settings and Outgoing Server (SMTP) settings are all identical
and all receive the same emails however it is only possible to send
emails from the old computer. In every case on the new computers a
message "Öutgoing server (SMTP) password required" comes up and when the
password is inserted a message "Login to server failed" occurs. Is there
a ready solution to this? By way of information there is no problem
receiving and sending emails from a "gmail" address on all computers

I would be grateful if you would comment.

SeaMonkey does not provide a new email address even though the Account

That should probably say "Existing Account Setup" even if it is new to

So you already created the existing old ISP's account in SeaMonkey and
you want to redirect or forward email from that account to the new
account, but first you have to decide on a new provider?

I'd decide on the new provider, create the account in SeaMonkey, then
call the old ISP's customer service and ask how I would accomplish that.

2) "Create a new profile and migrate your old data

Create a new profile in the desired location and then copy selected data

If you're using Thunderbird or Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey Mail, you should
include the prefs.js file (otherwise, you will need to recreate your
mail accounts). Once you start your Mozilla application with the new
profile, you should then check that you can see the folders for each
account. If they're missing, use the "Browse" button for the local
directory in your (Mail & Newsgroups) Account Settings -> Server
Settings and (Mail & Newsgroups) Account Settings -> Local Folders to
specify the correct account and mail directories."

For me, that means "No", not "Yes": Support with "limitations [that]
might need changes" isn't really 'supporting' them; maybe "SM 2.57 and
TB 60 will tolerate some XUL (legacy) extensions" better expresses how I
feel about it.

Actually, that's what I was expecting all along, including from what you
said previously about this, but I was so surprised by the apparent

Do you get a menu if you press alt key on the keyboard (assuming
Windows)? If so, then check to see if you can enable the menu option
from there.

Try doing ALT-V, and from the menu that appears, choose "Show/Hide" and
check the box next to "Menu Bar."

Try from the command mode:
1. Right click the left window icon on the taskbar (sorry, I forget what
it is called - I normally use linux) and then left click on 'Command
Prompt'.
2. Paste the following into the command prompt window:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe"
(be sure to include the quotation marks)

If the command works, then you should see nothing in the Command Prompt
window except the standard 'C:\Users\> prompt and seamonkey should
open. If not, hopefully you'll get some text in the Command Prompt
window that may give a clue as to why seamonkey isn't starting.

2.46 running ok here on Win10 Pro 1607. I did have to use the Sidebar
search option to set the default search engine to my preferred instead
of DuckDuckGo. Afaics, based on my mail, news, and surfing patterns
everything that was was working in the prior SM versions is still
working in SM2.46.

With respect to the Anniversary Update, I'm not sure 'just rollled out'
for TH2 is current information unless it was throttled locally(GPO,
etc.) for the last 6 months or not offered due to system compatibility
or other means.
 - The Anniversary Update(1607) was rolled out to 1511 users last
year(started in August 2016). TH2 was an update for 1507(Win10 RTM)
and released in the fall of 2015.

Unrelated 1507 reaches EOL(no support, no updates, no patches) next
month March 2017.

Even then there might still be some file system corruption. Schedule full disk

Larry, back in the dim, dark days (may have even been Mozilla Suite or
Netscape Suite), there was a file that got written to your harddisk
when you started the Suite. This was to stop two sessions of the Suite
being in operation at the same time. This file then got erased as part
of the normal Suite shutdown process.

However, if, for some reason, the computer/program crashed, this file
didn't get erased so, when you tried to re-start the Suite, it was a
no-go, because the Suite thought there was already a copy of the Suite
running.

Your mentioning that it still appeared on the task manager makes me
think this could be your situation!!

If this system still applies, maybe someone will remember what that
marker program was called, and tell you, so that you can delete it.

HTH

That's called .parentlock, found in the profile.

Shouldn't she have seen the SeaMonkey is already running message? That
would be a nice clue.

Won't start doesn't tell us much.

parent.lock in Windows. And it no longer is deleted. It survies shutting
down the program. Been that way for many versions.

O.K. deleted parent.lock in all three profiles (not sure which one is
used by new installation). Yes, we shut down the program first (Task
Manger). Still won't start.

O.K., we've tried several things as suggested. It won't open in safe
mode. Reinstalled it--still won't open. In Task Manager, doesn't matter
if "End Task" is used but still won't open. Note that it shows memory
usage, but not processor or HD usage.

All other programs still work (including Edge); please don't tell me
we'll wind up using Edge!

Normally she would have seen the message--is familiar with it--but this
time no message. Yes, it doesn't tell us much either. Clicking on the
icon (or the exe file)just simply doesn't give any response. Nothing.

She was able to get SM to start--once--after letting the computer just
sit there, doing nothing, for hours. But not again.

But in that situation you normally get a "SeaMonkey is already
running..." dialog. If OP gets no response at all it could be the
executable itself is either damaged, moved, or missing. Maybe the
shortcut is corrupted. Or a bad extension or plugin.

Could try launching in safemode:

seamonkey.exe -safe-mode

But if the executable is corrupted it might be easier just to
uninstall SeaMonkey and then reinstall it. It would fix all the above
issues with exception of a bad extension. Uninstalling SeaMonkey does
NOT remove your profile.

If those steps don't work, I'm inclined to believe that
uninstall/reinstall won't do anything for you, unless there's indication
that there's corruption to the program binaries or related registry
entries. In versions of Windows later than XP, that's unusual.

I suspect that there's corruption to your profile. Safe Mode is a good
first step, and I have seen it happen where something misbehaving goes
away with a one-time start in Safe Mode, followed by a normal restart.
And of course, Safe Mode is a way of quickly disabling your extensions,
and resetting your prefs to default settings.

However, it's possible that there's something wrong in the profile
that's beyond the ability of Safe Mode to fix. If that's the case, the
way of getting things back to all defaults is to create a new user
profile:

   seamonkey.exe -profilemanager

With Seamonkey, it's a little more effort to transition to a new profile
than it is with Firefox, because of the considerations for the mail
client. Beyond preference settings and extensions, most of what it takes
in a browser is moving your bookmarks.

For email, if If you're using IMAP, it's not that big of a deal,
although you do have to move your contacts list. However, if you are
using POP, then you also have to move your mail stores. And if you're
making more extensive use of the mail/news client (including rules,
news, etc.) those are additional things to account for.

To do this, you don't have to disturb your existing profile, and it's
not a problem to have multiple profiles defined. I believe that the
design intent for multiple profiles (as with Windows and multiple user
IDs) is to allow more than one person to share the machine, with some
measure of privacy, and not getting in each other's way.

However, a different use of profiles can be for one user that has need
for different configuration sets and preferences. In normal usage,
that's probably unusual, but it can be really useful for
troubleshooting. For me personally, on all my Mozilla apps (Seamonkey,
Firefox and Thunderbird), I keep an extra profile called "Bare metal",
where nearly all the config settings are default. That way, if
something is isn't behaving in my regular profile, I can switch over to
the bare metal one, and see how things behave with default settings. I
can't remember a time when I've been able to replicate a problem in a
profile with default settings.

It started right up on my Dell Inspiron 15 Windows 10 with latest update

As far as I know there was no change to SeaMonkey since 2.46 was released.

As Richmond suggests, try running SeaMonkey from the command line and
see if there are any error messages.

If all else fails, I would just uninstall and reinstall, after backing

Yes. The difference is the second case displays a URL, but the first
does not. A user seeing "Fritz" knows it's not a URL and will never be
fooled into thinking that's the target, but a user seeing
"http://www.microsoft.com"; may be fooled into thinking he's already
seeing the target. So only the second can be a scam.

I know, this is a busy, busy, world, we're all go go go, but before I
click on any link, I look at the bottom of the SM screen, where SM
displays the real link address!

Am I the only one??

(This reply has been typed in the dark, due to a power failure, so I

Me too But I have a case, when I must accept the scam and click on
the pseudo url.
I have asked the creator of the SCAM - He told me that the real url is a
site who collect for statistic the number of clicks on his link THEN
redirect you on the url address shown.
So the browser is really and finally on the page of the address shown,
but detoured for a moment on another site who collect the click.

Hmm! Seems a strange way of doing it, but O.K!! Why not use a visit
counter on the real page??

However - i've contacted the manufacturer of the fritz!box and hope to get a
response, that will solve this problem. I'll post a follow-up a.s.a.p.
The last suggestion simply to rnrich the link with more information will be

So the best is to remove the link as this:

This is the only solution I have found to give the information about the

not really. the mail will be generated by the hardware i use. Of course that
mail could be changed, but only if the manufacturer will change the mail - or
if I will hack it. But hoever - these solutions are not ... feasible.

I saved a mail and opened it by a text editor.
However - I found no "hided" url masking in the mail. all links are directing
to the original address - or they are similar to the first sample you tested.
So I am in doubt, if the scam detections comes from there - or if it's caused
by another reason. I'd like to post a complete mail body here, but I will not
do that because of safety reasons.
Would we have other possibilities to check out the reason for the scam marking?
Could I debug that somehow? Or would it be possible to add or activate some
debug informations?

Thanks - Uwe.

Re: Sea Monkey and Windows 10 - Location of User Profile

2016-07-19 Thread Frank-Rainer Grahl
You can just enter about:support. Show Folder will open the current
profile folder. The location is basically the same as in Windows Vista
to 8.1.

before the conversion?

I save up-to-date copies of the profile and ini in a separate HD, but
in W10 have no idea where to find the profile so I can copy in the
saved version. Help, anyone? (What is the path to the profile, and how
do I find it?) In W7 I know the answer, but W10 is a mystery with a
confusing UI.

What happens to extensions and plug-ins?

Yes it is compatible with Windows 10 (although I see Windows 10 isn't
listed under System Requirements, looks like it needs updating). You
shouldn't have to do anything, it should just work. I have upgraded 3
systems (1 form Win7 and 2 from Win 8.1) and installed it on one new Win
10 system and have not had any problems. Type about:profiles in the url
bar and it will tell you where your profile is located. Or click Help,
Troubleshooting Information and click on about:profiles under
application basics.

Jim

Hmm! Jim, in my Win7 install, when I click on either of your
about:profiles above, I get a

Invalid Address

The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded.

What am I doing wrong?? (By-the-By, at installation, I have done a
"Custom" Installation, placing my profile on my E:\ drive, although I
would expect this to affect SeaMonkey, as it still works with my
selected profile!!)

Apparently, about:profiles only works in Firefox, not SeaMonkey.
