Thanks very much for the complete list; this is a clip'n'save. And I would really like a copy of that video somehow... when the demodvd project is on autopilot, I promised several people that I would remaster the Sierra promotional videos of the late 80's onto a DVD. Since they would hardly take up all the space, I was also going to stick the Making of the 7th Guest video on there, as well as a few others that came with games, and this would be a great addition. Willing to lend it to me when the time comes? (Hey, if I can get Tom of Quest Studios willing to lend me his, I figure I can get anyone to lend them out ;-) -- http://www.MobyGames.com/ The world's most comprehensive gaming database project. -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. Here's my copy: 1. Flat corrugated cardboard box. Mine doesn't have anything to indicate that it's the WC3 Premiere Edition; it's unadorned, which makes me a bit worried. I do know that the film can definitely comes in a box of about this size, though. 2. Terran Confederation T-shirt (mine is XL and black). 3. "Fleet Action" Wing Commander paperback novel (same one as you can find in a bookstore, used being more likely). Apparently the series is popular among non-gameplayers, as the novels just keep coming. 4. "Making of Wing Commander III" VHS tape in a slipcase (the copy on eBay seems to be missing this). 5. Gray film can. Has a "Wing Commander III Premiere Edition" sticker on it. 6. 1995 Wing Commander calendar. 7. "Behind the Scenes of Wing Commander III" CD in a jewel case. 8. 4 game CD's in separate jewel cases. 9. Wing Commander III poster (resembles a movie poster). 10. Playguide (I think this is the same as the standard version). 11. Install guide (ditto). 12. Victory Streak magazine-let (ditto). 13. Reference card (ditto). 14. Ship fold-out poster (ditto). 15. Registration card. 16. Ad for the book "Inside Wing Commander III". An ad or two might be missing, but I'm pretty certain everything critical is here. -- Stephen -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. One of the many joys of cross-continental packaging. I've noticed this general trend throughout the years on my side of the pond: In the 1980s, the Euro version of a game almost always came in a much smaller box than for the US. In the 1990s, the Euro version of a game came in roughly the same size box but with completely different cover art. Here onward, the Euro version of a game will come in the new DVD clamshell-style packaging, with the US to follow :-( -- http://www.MobyGames.com/ The world's most comprehensive gaming database project. -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. Re: [SWCollect] Awkward game packages
My love for Darklands (and Daggerfall) resides specially for the fact that they are both games that you always return to. (Although Daggerfall has main quests and an endgame, it's not the most important part of the game, IMO) But as far as Darklands goes, you're right, it doesn't end. Isn't this what a real RPG should be? It represents the life of four heroes (which can be as young as 16 or as old as 56, IIRC), and you can play them the way you want, either just by running around stealing from peasants, or by defeating robber barons and sabbath witches. The game has two "main" quests (killing a Dragon and defeating an Evil priest), if you can do both, you have pretty much "completed" the game, as they're the two most difficult quests, but you can go on playinf forever, even if your characters get too old (just create others and add them to that same party in that case) Pedro R. Note that the film can actually goes in the box; there is a *ton* of stuff in there, with the film can only taking up about half of the box space. The box is flat and while it's not quite the square meter I've claimed it to be in the past, it's not that far off the mark. It shows up on eBay with some regularity (certainly more often than many other things I'm looking for), but the catch is that it is hardly ever complete. If the book is missing, it's easy to replace, as it's the same one you can pluck from a used bookstore, but the T-shirt, VHS tape, and making-of-WC3 CD are a different matter (and at least one of these is highly likely to not be there). Also, it's sometimes described poorly in the title (okay, well, that's not really news). If you want a complete contents list, I can either get my copy out and list 'em all, or there's a big Wing Commander fan site which lists *most* of the contents. Someone said that only 1,500 of these were made, but given how often this shows up and given that EA sold it directly until 2-3 years ago, I think there were more than that. It's still easily worth $100+ if everything's there. > > * Escape From Monkey Island Signature Edition. Oh, it fits the shelves > > okay, but there are props inside. I don't remember exactly why I was disappointed with it any more. It's been too long since I played it. I do seem to recall that some of the inventory conversions from M&M to CA didn't seem to make much sense. I still have it, uh, somewhere. (Did I see it last night in my computer desk? I don't remember.) I found a page for it at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Exhibit/2762/centauri/main.htm. And, FYI, it turns out it was released on the C64, too. Overall, however, I just don't seem to be cut out for computer RPG's. I never finished Might & Magic, either. Members of my party seemed to get continually killed. I did manage to map out a pretty sizable portion of the game before I bought the hint book, though. I think it was shortly after I got the hint book that I quit playing. I don't remember why. M&M was the last RPG I played, too. No time to play them these days. You know, for that matter, I don't seem to manage to finish many RPG/adventure/IF games. What about the Suspended mask? Oh, and it isn't the "Starcross saucer". There's no such thing as a "Starcross saucer". It has recently been officially renamed by the members of this mailing list to "the pink frisbee". Weird but true. Thank you. :) Pedro R. Er, okay, so they are just a set of four bookcases purchased for $70 apiece at IKEA. They still work great for computer games -- the shelves can be spaced evenly to accomodate any normal-sized computer game (nice fit, too -- a large box fits nicely with not much extra room to spare). I haven't quite set everything up yet (I need to get more shelves, actually), and I'm still agonizing over just how to organize my games on the shelves. Not everything is going to fit, but everything significant to me in any way should, at least at first, heh. Anyway, a few games are misbehaving. I think I'll shelve some small books separately on a bookcase that has actual books, but here are a few games that will require special treatment: * Wing Commander III Premiere Edition. Easily the largest game box I own. There's no way this is going to fit on a bookshelf (it's way too large in two dimensions). * Escape From Monkey Island Signature Edition. Oh, it fits the shelves okay, but there are props inside. Guess what one of props inside is? A *magnet*. It's one of the flat types, so I don't think it's much of a threat, but just as a precaution it's going to be isolated from my whole main collection-library. * Sid and Al's Incredible Toons. What's awkward is the package shape -- the package consists of two separable pieces that form a misshapen cartoonish TV set. Not only is it not nicely orthagonal, it's also fragile. (Incidentally, I have a duplicate set of trading cards and the poster for this, but I don't have the manual -- I'd like the manual to form a complete set. Oh, if you're a fan of the Incredible Machine series, this is a must-own.) If I had a Starcross saucer, that would probably make the list too, but since I don't, it doesn't.
