t-and-f: Am I getting to old to coach? New rules in HS
Am I looking at things wrong? Last night I went to our annual HS coaches rules meeting. All Head Track Coaches of Boys and Girls HS and Middle schools and all starters in the state of Kansas have to attend the rules meeting and pass a 100 question T or F test with a 90% each year. New rules for the year are discussed. What a year for the Federation rules. 1. All Head Coaches are to meet with the referee before the meet so he can ask us if our athletes will a) display good sportsmanship at all times b) are legally equiped 2. Now that the pole vault people got a bigger pit recommended the word is you going to have to buy a cover that has a coaches box painted on it of a different color for vaulters to aim to land in. We were told that one rules maker wanted to make a vault unsuccessful if the vaulter's head and shoulders didn't land in the box. I realize there is a great safety issue but do those half-pipe and aerial people have all the same concerns and rules etc. Oh and I LOVE this one. If you go to a meet and the host school doesn't have an event facility that is safe all the coaches can get together and declare the event over before it starts. All the team points will be divided equally between all competitors except the host school which gets nothing. Must have been somebody from New York or New Jersey who push that baby through. Besides all this the IAAF Javelin comes on line this year and then out of the blue they changed the Middle School Girls Shot Put back or down to 6lbs from 4K. When the discussion turned to what to do with navel rings under uniforms I about quit coaching. phil Weishaar chapman Kansas 67431
t-and-f: Olympic DQ's
In some ways I hate to bring this up but I am surprised noone has mentioned the 3 DQ's Sunday in Salt Lake for the using the newest version of EPO called darpopeitin (sorry about the spelling). Chemical just released and isn't even on the list of banned substances yet but certainly will be. What was interesting was that athletes who were DQ'ed were only DQ'ed for Saturday and Sunday's events. Earlier tests were negative so those events stood. The testers must be catching up with the users at least for a little while. phil weishaar
t-and-f: response to David Anderson
I know of no preparation in any way for a coach and teammates to be prepared to handle what happened Saturday in Minn. As a HS coach for over 30 years, I cannot imagine what I would be like if something like that happened here. I grieve and shake everytime I hear of an athlete in any sport dying. Not only do you have to be couselor and leader of a group of very saddened young men and women but you as a individual must be constantly battling your thoughts and feelings. Yes we have to go on and try to learn to deal with reality but it isn't easy. Some may never really overcome it. I'm not a trained counselor just a high school teacher and coach. I pray that all the athletes and spectators who were there and the judges running the event off and all family members involved may someday find a way to come to grips with what happened. I know it won't happen over night. For all involved this may be the toughest competition ever. My deepest sympathy to all Phil Weishaar Chapman Kansas 67431
t-and-f: jagger at the olympics other famous people
Jagger was at the 84 opening ceremonies in LA. ABC showed him in the stands. I don't know if he went to any track sessions. Former President Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower ran the 440 and mile relay for Abilene High School, Abilene Kansas in the early 1900's. I think a picture of him and his relay team is in his library/museum in Abilene. phil weishaar chapman kansas (rival of Abilene) (country vs city thing)
t-and-f: track baseball
I have always loved this story from ex Kansas University coach Bob Timmons. While coaching at Wichita East in the early 60's, Bob also told everyone their was so much talent at East he was continually amazed. One year his 4 x 200 relay (880 relay for you oldtimers) set a state record. The next day or so the team was challenged to a race by members of the East High's state champion baseball teams infield. The baseball team won.
t-and-f: farming vs weightlifting
I was one who actually spent his youth doing this very exercise from 7th grade thru high school every summer putting up hay for various farmers around the area. I was actually pretty good at it and could easily sling a bale, 6 to 8 high on a wagon depending on weight of bale. After 6 years of putting up hay, I went to college where I became friends with others who actually lifted weights. the first time I ever tried to max out on a bench press I couldn't bench 120 lbs. Like most things throwing hay bales is all technique. BTW, if you think it is hard to get kids to run for track, try to HIRE them to pick up 80 lb square bales and stack them in a barn! phil weishaar chapman kansas
t-and-f: Alex Francis, retired coach of Fort Hays State, died last night
Alex Francis, 34 year coach of Fort Hays State in Hays Kansas died last night. He was 93. Francis had also been part of Olympic and Pan-Am coaching groups and member of many committees during his coaching career. phil weishaar
t-and-f: checking to see if list is running
I haven't received any memo's for 14 hrs. Is list running? phil weishaar
t-and-f: measurement of a HS record
Is there anything special that has to happen when measuring a potential Nat. HS record in a throwing event? do you need a steel tape etc? My undertanding is that the international javelin records are separate from the high school javelin records since the implement is different. Kendra Wecker of Marysville Kansas established the record last summer at 174' 4. She thru 174' last night at a high school meet and it became apparent that this situation had never happened to any of us before and we wanted to make sure we didn't screw it up. Kendra is using only the international javelin this year even though it is not mandatory until next year. phil weishaar chapman kansas
t-and-f: 40 Degree Discus Arc
Last night, I was at our annual HS track rules meeting all head coaches have to attend. One of the newer suggestions and or rule changes deals with reducing the discus throwing sector from 60 degrees to 40 degrees. This is now mandatory for HS meets if you throw on the field inside the track, which most people don't do. Is the International ring and college ring a 40 degree sector? There is a chance that our state meet, which is held at Wichita State, will use a 40 degree sector, although nobody during the year has too. I would think it would be a problem. How difficult is it to get college freshman used to a 40 degree sector after they have used the 60 degree during HS?
t-and-f: water vs coke
A friend sent me the following info. How much of this would you physiologist types consider to be true, especially about dehydration? "We all know that water is important but I've never seen it written down like this before." WATER - 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half world population.) In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%. One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a U-Washington study. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day? = COKE - No wonder coke tastes s good: 1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident. 2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days. 3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and...Let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china. 4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola. 5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion. 6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes. 7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, Remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy. 8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield. FYI: 1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its Ph is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. 2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials. 3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!
t-and-f: weather cancels Leeper?
Nathan Leeper's appearance last night on David Letterman was put on hold due to bad weather I guess. Evidently they were blocking off 53rd street and putting an apron of some type on the street so he could high jump. whether others are jumping is not clear. It was announced earlier they were doing this last night (thurs) but didn't do it, The K-state Collegian web site has an article about it.
t-and-f: Leeper on Letterman
I have been told by relatives that high jumper Nathan Leeper will be on Thursday nights David Letterman show. phil weishaar
t-and-f: Surprise jumper at Kansas High School indoor meet
Evidently Trinidad junior long jumper Cleavon Dillon is attending high school this year at Leavenworth Kans, High School. He was at an indoor meet in Manhattan on Sunday jumping 7.53 or 24' 5 1/2". Cleavon is listed on the IAAF website as having the longest windaided junior long jump in the world last year with 8.09. His date of birth is listed as 5/10/82. He competed for Trinidad in the world junior championships in Chile but didn't make the final. He won the high school division of the Florida Relays last year while attending Queens Royal College which evidently is a high school in Trinidad. Apparently, his Dad is a member of the international class of officers attending the Military Tactics College at Fort Leavenworth this year and the family is there also. It was quite a sight to watch him jump after watching the typical 19-20' jumpers you normally see in such meets. Kansas has no organized indoor season. Kansas State University hosts a "high school meet" each winter for those individuals who continue to train. phil weishaar
t-and-f: SI article on Sports Movies with 3 tidbits on track
This weeks feature article in SI is about Sports movies. 3 items of interest; 1) This summer a movie called "The Long Run" will be released about an aging coach and the marathoners he trains. Don't know who is in it? 2) Without Limits was listed as one of the best sports movies nobody saw. If fact many in the filming industry feel Billy Crudup's portrail of Pre was more life-like than any such attempt of an actor playing an athlete including biggies like DeNiro playing the boxer in Raging Bull. 3) Movies that they would like to make but don't: Story of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at Mexico City. Reason: To be realistic actors would have to actually look like sprinters for audience to like movie. Directors and Producers can't find anybody who could act and actually look like a world class sprinter. They say it is nearly impossible. Any ideas we could give them? Give you guys going to Millrose tonite something to think about. phil weishaar chapman kansas
t-and-f: Nebraska's new indoor track
Two of our HS pole vaulters went to a PV clinic at Lincoln over Christmas and came home raving about the new hydraulic banked track at Neb. They said they were the first group to be able to use the facility in fact they had to set up new pole vault pits that had just been delivered. They said they raised the banks one day and ran on them. Look for some fast times at Husker Invite and Big 12 indoor meet. Who else in nation has a hydraulic banked indoor track?
RE:t-and-f: Genes give black runners edge: findings
well they must have pulled the story because the web site is a blank page and no mention of it anywhere in there main headlines.
RE:t-and-f: Men's 200m - RESULTS INCLUDED
scroll down: actually, Capel didn't run that bad AFTER he finally took off, He had what had to be one of the slowest starts in olympic history. after the race he laid on the track and cried. It looked to me as if he flinched just before the gun and his weight was going backward at the gun but it was minute( if it happened) and no recall. Lanes 5-6-7-8- placed 1 thru 4 . Miller pretty much tied up like he did in semis. When was the last time no one ran a sub 20 200 ANYTIME during the heats and Finals?
t-and-f: letterman plugging track
last nite on David Letterman: Dave blasted NBC coverage. Also said the only thing he wanted to watch was the high jump which lasted 2 minutes on NBC. He missed it. I guess I should send him a tape of CBC's coverage of HJ.
t-and-f: harbor bridge climb
have any of you guys in sidney, climbed the sidney harbour bridge yet. Looks like a quite an experience? CBC described the climb last nite. A guide takes you to the top by climbing steps that go up the outside frame to the apex.
t-and-f: congrats to ?(don't read if waiting for NBC)
since no one has mentioned anything yet, I will say congratulation to angelo taylor for a tremendous race against tough competition. He was not be deterred by a "bad lane" but just attacked the race from the start and finished strong running a PR to win a gold medal.
t-and-f: Freeman's full body suit, and other musings
1.Has anybody ever wore a full body suit in a major championship final race before? I remember years ago maybe Seoul or Toyko some hurdlers wearing them in a prelim. With as much on the line as she had it took alot of courage to try something new. 2. Anybody see the camera which was placed in the pole vault box showing the vaulters plant? also the moving camera on the vaulter going up was kinda neat. 3. The backstretch camera following MJ in the final was just awesome. How a person can be so relaxed while running 21.0 is amazing. I was bowling last night and everyone at the alleys was watching MJ's race and was amazed at that shot. 4. I noticed during a swimming race, they had an imaginary line showing the world record time as the swimmers were racing. Could such a graphic be possible for track? 5. In case you didn't catch it, NBC showed the M10,000 and W5000 in the there late night coverage. Monday night I haven't seen how much they showed. Personally Geb's Tergat's finish was alot more exciting than what they showed. 6. I thought Gracia ran a great race. 7. I haven't seen the m800 semi's on any channel yet. maybe I missed them. 8. It looked like alot of people came to the track to just see Freeman, alot of empty seats during the 10,000 and the M800 semis had to be run yet. 9. Who invented syncro. diving? 10. Looks like the Aussies may have been right about American LJ'ers? Just the wrong reason.

t-and-f: Brunin
Well when I went to bed last night CBC had just spent 20 minutes crying about how Bruny had not made the 2nd round and how poor he had run and on and on. This morning when I watched the tape of the 2nd round HERE HE IS. What is going on? CBC spent the whole telecast showing 100 heats and 400 heats. no mention of any other event. Showed all 9 round 2 100 heats. 4 for women and 5 for men (that is new isn't it?)
t-and-f: CBC broadcast tonite
well I am sitting in front of the TV watching CBC's broadcasts of the 100 heats and it is 7:35 pm CT. they are going to show alot of track tonite and during the early morning hours. Wish you all had a satellite dish phil weishaar chapman kansas
