An issue with Word Pad

2015-08-06 Thread Larry Higgins via Talk

Does anybody else have this problem, and if so, how do I solve it?

For some reason when using Word Pad, WE will not announce the character
being deleted when backspacing. This is just a bit disconcerting.

Another issue is that WE doesn't announce what text is being selected.
Any solutions for this one as well?

I don't use Word Pad all that often, but when I just want to take care
of a small editing job, I would far rather load a small program to do
that rather than bringing out the big gun. Kind of like not wanting to
use an axe to swat a fly.

Anyway, any help with this one will be greatly appreciated.

Larry Pad

did you buy windows 10?
you do not qualify for a free upgrade.
only windows 7 and 8 users.
i think if you try it will either tell you it will not upgrade or it will go

Doug at AiSquared has been working closely with me including remoting into my

Hello Banks,

If you are using the ribbon, when you tab to the various font attributes, WE
does announce edit or rich edit (and you could type into these controls the
name or size you want), but they are also comboboxes, and all you have to do in
order to see your choices is to open them with the standard alt-down arrow key
stroke. You should then find yourself in the list of choices.

I believe there are several e-books published on the topic of using Office 2010
and Window-Eyes, and they range in the $75 to $100 price range, but they are
really worth it, as you can't really learn to use Word by asking one question
at a time here on the list.

The one I prefer is from Kathyann Murtha (under either the business name of
Access Technology Institute or Blind Training). Hers gives you the book in
various electronic formats (text, Word, HTML) along with various audio
tutorials. I cannot remember if she did an update for Word 2013.

You may have to write to her to arrange a payment method, as her online payment
engine had some issue; so if you don't see a way to order what you want, drop
her an email and ask how to do it.

Hello,; Has anyone out there encountered problems with windows-eyes 9.1 and
changing font properties on office word 2013? I am using a windows 7 pro
addition and I have insured that all of my set files for office where properly
installed and I am still not able to make any changes. When I try all I will

installed, yet still nothing. Is there anyone that may have knowledge about
addressing this issue?

there should be a way to turn this off that you can use the function

I have a lenovothinkpad and when i do a key combo i can turn off the fn

i have is a full sized keyboard as well.

not unique to this brand is that the Function keys do what there were designed
to do straight away, meaning pressing say F3 and F4 changges screen brightness.
So, in order to use a function key with Window Eyes or do do things like
switch window panes or close a program, you have to hit the FN key and the
function key. I really dislike this, but haven't found a setting to completely
turn it off and back to how it used to work in prior laptops. My HP laptop at

RE: taking ownership of folders?

2015-08-06 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hi Josh,

Ever since Vista, I believe, but certainly I noticed it in Windows 7,
content in those two folders which change is mapped to virtually stored
folders, and so they are subfolders of a virtual store folder.
My parent virtual store folder is located here:

C:\Users\Rod-Win-10\AppData\Local\VirtualStore

Just replace Rod-Win-10 with your username in the above path, paste it into
the Run dialog box, which you call up with Windows-R, press Enter, and your
virtual store parent folder should open with the two folders inside.

Re: casperski antivirus

2015-08-06 Thread Casey via Talk

Hi where do you get the program that you are using?
Also how well does it work for you with window-eyes?
And what all protection does it offer you?
And can you put it on more then one computer and can you pay only once a
year for it?

On 8/6/2015 2:24 PM, David Goldfield via Talk wrote:

I have never used Kaspersky with Window-Eyes. However, it may offer some
degree of accessibility and it is the antimalware program I chose to use
as of a few months ago, after Microsoft Security Essentials failed to
protect me against a rather crippling virus. I use it because it is one
of the top-rated antivirus packages on the market and I refuse to
compromise my computer's security in the name of accessibility.
I am, as some people may know, extremely passionate and a bit militant
about this issue and I apologize if I come off too strong about this.
However, blind people need to consider that we need to use the security
software which is highly-rated, rather than choosing the package that
works best with a screen reader but which may not offer an acceptable
level of protection. I am trying to dialog with Kaspersky regarding
these issues and I plan to continue to do so until accessibility is
improved. I would like to strongly urge all of you to do the same. If
one person contacts a company, they may be less inclined to act. If many
of us contact them with the same concerns, particularly if we're paying
customers, perhaps we'll get results which will be more favorable to us.
So many of us, myself included, find it easier to choose a security
program because it works best with whatever screen reader we happen to
be using. When it comes to the security of my computer, that is no
longer acceptable to me. For years, I relied upon MSE because it was
speech-friendly. I'm also an extremely cautious, responsible and
security-conscious user but these traits are no longer enough to keep
you safe. I now insist on using security software which is highly-rated,
meaning that it gets excellent scores with independent lab tests. If
it's not accessible, I am willing to engage in constructive dialog with
the company and I will go to incredible lengths to do this but, in the
end my goal is to make it accessible.

RE: I want Opinions On New Lap Top

2015-08-06 Thread Van Lant, Robin via Talk
I have a newer Toshiba S75 that I got from Costco. I picked it out largely
based on the keyboard. I wanted a separate number pad and so many of the
keyboards I felt in various stores had all the keys squished together so that I
couldn't quickly distinguish the arrow keys and function keys. I know I could
have used an external keyboard, but having have this defeats the purpose for me
of the laptop. The only annoyance I have with the Toshiba, and I heard this is
not unique to this brand is that the Function keys do what there were designed
to do straight away, meaning pressing say F3 and F4 changges screen brightness.
So, in order to use a function key with Window Eyes or do do things like
switch window panes or close a program, you have to hit the FN key and the
function key. I really dislike this, but haven't found a setting to completely
turn it off and back to how it used to work in prior laptops. My HP laptop at
work still functions the way I would expect with function keys.

RE: Synthesizer or Speech Card Behavior on Asus Zenbook

2015-08-06 Thread Richard Petty via Talk
I understand disabling speech enhancements should solve this. I spoke to
Microsoft's accessibility line this afternoon. The person I spoke to said
the Disable all enhancements option is no longer available in Windows 10.
He did escalate my issue, so I may know more in the next four or five days.

It would be interesting to know if anyone does find the disable enhancements

I've just purchased a Asus Zenbook notebook, installed Windows 10 and WE

In all menus and all programs, words are voiced indistinctly. Almost always
the first letter is either not spoken or spoken at a lower volume level with
a small pop sound. If this can't be changed, it will be hard to work with.

Has anyone had this experience and have you found a workaround? I'll
appreciate any help on this that's available.

RE: WINDOWS 10

2015-08-06 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. Since it sounds like your upgrade to Windows 10 has started, and since
you mentioned that you are still hearing Window-eyes 9.2 speaking, all you
can do is wait. The process can take up to perhaps five hours. Window-eyes
will eventually stop speaking and eventually you'll hear Window-eyes
announce a message asking you if you wish to keep your settings as you have
them or if you only want to keep certain files. Choose to leave things as
they are. Once you do that you'll hear a message that your computer will
restart several times and that this could take a while. Then Window-eyes
won't talk anymore. Since Window-eyes will no longer be speaking,
periodically press the Windows key and the enter key together to launch
Narrator. Once you can launch narrator, follow the instructions you hear,
and eventually your computer will launch Windows 10 and Window-eyes will
speak again.

Hi. The information I'm about to pass along to the list members are not
 complaints. They are observations.

I reserved my copies of Windows 10 to install on my Dell Xps-8500 desktop
computer running Windows 8.1, and for my Dell Xps-501-L laptop running
 Windows 7 home 64 bit. On Sunday morning I heard Window-eyes 9.2
 begin to
speak as if something was being installed on my desktop computer, but
 didn't
pay close attention, and I didn't think much of it. Yesterday I
 happened to
check Windows updates and found at least a dozen download failed
 updates of
Windows 10 home upgrade. With the help of the Microsoft accessibility
answer desk I was able to download and install Windows 10. I am now
 hearing
what sounds like the Window-eyes startup sound twice. The sound is also
very distorted, so I have to turn the sound bars volume down a bit.

Later yesterday I had to have the Microsoft Accessibility answer desk
representative help me get Windows 10 downloaded so I could install it
 for a
similar issue. There were only two failed updates and I didn't hear
Window-eyes speak when the updates were being downloaded. The
 Window-eyes
sound is also distorted. I tried to redownload and run the
 Window-eyes 9.2
upgrade and install it, but the progress reached 80 percent and
 generated a
Windows error I believe. I now cannot find my downloads folder after
upgrading the Windows 7 computer to Windows 10. I tried searching for
downloads and nothing would come up. How do I find my downloads folder
 Thanks. ?

Re: casperski antivirus

2015-08-06 Thread Pamela Dominguez via Talk
So, I have a question for you: How do you use it in the meantime? I
purchased Trend Micro, and it was totally unusable. Because of that, it
reeked havoc on my old computer. I think it would have been very good if I
could have used it correctly, but I couldn't even tell it not to block
window eyes. Pam.

Thanks. ?

For some reason when using Word Pad, WE will not announce the character being

Another issue is that WE doesn't announce what text is being selected.
Any solutions for this one as well?

I don't use Word Pad all that often, but when I just want to take care of a

than bringing out the big gun. Kind of like not wanting to use an axe to swat a

Anyway, any help with this one will be greatly appreciated.

Okay, I must have confused some of you. I have no problem going to the previous
page. The problem is, once back on the previous page, I don't land on the link
that I last click on! I'm placed back at the top of the page, have to hit tab
key until I hear a click, then I have to hit H or L until I get back to the
link I had click on. This has been going on for the last 2 major upgrades. My
personal opinion is web access and functionality has digressed. I'd like to
know how you all get beyond that last link instead of going through links
you've already passed over?

I found out accidentally that the backspace key will also take you to

When hitting enter on a link and going to that page, how do you get
back to the previous link? Hitting alt left arrow hasn't work the way
it use to for a long time. I had a work around by copying the link to
the clipboard then hit enter on the link. When I wanted to go back to
the previous link, I'd hit alt left arrow, once I was back at the
previous page, I'd hit shift control F and paste the link from the
clipboard and hit enter and I'd be back at the previous link. This
hasn't worked in the last 2 versions of wineyes. Using current version
of FX and wineyes. Vista home.

Subject: An issue with Word Pad

Does anybody else have this problem, and if so, how do I solve it?

For some reason when using Word Pad, WE will not announce the character being
deleted when backspacing. This is just a bit disconcerting.

Another issue is that WE doesn't announce what text is being selected.
Any solutions for this one as well?

I don't use Word Pad all that often, but when I just want to take care of a
small editing job, I would far rather load a small program to do that rather
than bringing out the big gun. Kind of like not wanting to use an axe to swat a
fly.

Anyway, any help with this one will be greatly appreciated.

RE: {BULK} Can't change font properties office word 2013

2015-08-06 Thread Chip Orange via Talk

I am using a windows 7 pro
addition and I have insured that all of my set files for office where
properly installed and I am still not able to make any changes. When I try
all I will get is a edit box instead of a combo box that will enable me to
rotate through the choices. I have also insured that all of my set files for
office where installed, yet still nothing. Is there anyone that may have
knowledge about addressing this issue?

Thanks in advance!!!

Re: casperski antivirus

2015-08-06 Thread David Goldfield via Talk

On Sunday morning I heard Window-eyes 9.2 begin to
speak as if something was being installed on my desktop computer, but didn't
pay close attention, and I didn't think much of it. Yesterday I happened to
check Windows updates and found at least a dozen download failed updates of
Windows 10 home upgrade. With the help of the Microsoft accessibility
answer desk I was able to download and install Windows 10. I am now hearing
what sounds like the Window-eyes startup sound twice. The sound is also
very distorted, so I have to turn the sound bars volume down a bit.

Later yesterday I had to have the Microsoft Accessibility answer desk
representative help me get Windows 10 downloaded so I could install it for a
similar issue. There were only two failed updates and I didn't hear
Window-eyes speak when the updates were being downloaded. The Window-eyes
sound is also distorted. I tried to redownload and run the Window-eyes 9.2
upgrade and install it, but the progress reached 80 percent and generated a
Windows error I believe. I now cannot find my downloads folder after
upgrading the Windows 7 computer to Windows 10. I tried searching for
downloads and nothing would come up. How do I find my downloads folder
Thanks. ?

Guest networks can have passwords. The idea of a guest network is you allow

You would password protect your guest network so your neighbors can't get on

issues with windows 10

2015-08-06 Thread Don H via Talk
OK so I have tried twice to install Windows 10 on my HP Envy laptop. I
have been unable to resolve the issue that file explorer is very
sluggish and gets even more sluggish as times goes by. If I do a
restart the sluggishness gets better but again gets worse as I use the
computer.
Doug at AiSquared has been working closely with me including remoting
into my laptop and observed the problem first hand. I contacted the
Microsoft Accessibility hotline and although they indicated that they
have had numerous callers about sluggishness in file explorer they had
no solution.
The only last suggestion that Doug has is to do a clean install of Win
10 which means a lot of effort with the high possibility that it still
won't work well. AiSquared is aware of the overall lag issue in file
explorer but not like in my case where it gets more sluggish as time
goes by.

Is anyone else seeing this building sluggishness?
Again I thank Doug and all the staff at AiSquared for all their time and
only wished a easy solution was at hand.

Synthesizer or Speech Card Behavior on Asus Zenbook

2015-08-06 Thread Richard Petty via Talk
I've just purchased a Asus Zenbook notebook, installed Windows 10 and WE
9.2.

Richard,

Aside from the change to the Start menu itself, everything else, including
navigating the task bar and desktop are exactly the same as in Windows 7 and
8, including the ability to use first-letter navigation.

Is there no longer a task bar where first letter navigation can be used?

Is it possible to use first letter navigation in the user-created desktops?

Is first letter navigation possible anywhere in Windows 10?

Thanks.

I would recommend you check out the Windows 10 audio tutorial we recorded as
it contains an overview of the new Start menu. Here is the direct link:

I've actually heard that the W10 start menu is quite different in some
respects, so yeah, if someone could describe how to navigate it, that would
be very! very very appreciated!

RE: downgrading to window-eyes 9.1

2015-08-06 Thread Vaughan Dodd via Talk
Agree with all of this.

I do note that although File Explorer is sluggish, it is still faster for me
than with 8.1 or Seven (Windows) and I think we will see a flurry of updates
from Microsoft soon.

I do believe that support for Windows seven must diminish, and I encourage
Windows Seven users to perhaps wait a while but eventually upgrade. Going
back to Window-Eyes 9.1. really isn't sensible, as it locks those who do
down-grade into a legacy trap.

Chris,

I haven't had Windows 7 for a long time, but Windows 10 is much faster and
it is free to upgrade. I haven't found a program yet that would not run on
Windows 10. My only problem is that file explorer has a slow response for
some reason, Internet Explorer seems to be faster than in Windows 8.1 and it
doesn't seem to crash as much as it did in 8.1. If WE quits speaking I can
just hit the WE shortcut and speech is immediately back but that hasn't
happened much at all.

Well that's nice, but you guys have to remember that this whole thing
started because it's not running smoothly on a windows 7 machine. I'm
certain that Windows 10 is great, but it doesn't fit my situation
because I'm not running windows 10 yet. I don't plan to for a while
yet. Like I said i'm glad 9.2 is running great for you guys and, for
the most part it is here too. But for no known reason for me, at some
point it just quits speaking, and I've no idea what to do to tell
people what i'm doing to make it happen. I do believe it probably has
something to do with Window-eyes interaction with either Windows
explorer, or internet explorer because using those 2 things seems to
cause Window-eyes to stop speaking more frequently than anywhere else.
i've checked to make sure that all settings are updated, all apps and
set files are updated, windows update is up to date with all updates
possible...so i've done everything i can think of, outside of going
back to 9.0 which I really would not like to do if I can help it.

Hope this helps clarify things. I really thought my first message on
the issue was clear enough, but I guess not.

 Hi,

I didn't keep the old 9.1 upgrade file cause after upgrading to
 windows 10, 9.1 wouldn't work anyway.
I ran the 9.2 upgrade a couple of days on windows 8.1 and found the
new upgrade to be a much faster more robust screen reader. After
upgrading to windows 10, the only problem that I've run in to is the
slowness of file explorer and I think that is a windows 10 problem.
I'm getting to really like Windows 10 much better than 8.1 as it is
faster and more stable than Windows 8..

 Hi guys

After today, I think it might be a wise idea to downgrade to
Window-eyes 9.1. Here's the issue though. I seem to have misplaced
my 9.1 upgrade file. I do have a9.0 cd. Is there any way of getting
ahold of a 9.1 upgrade file? I can certainly uninstall and
 re-install Window-eyes, but I'd like to go back to 9.1. You'll have
to forgive me if this seems obvious but I've never had to do this
sort of thing before. This is the first time i've ever had an issue
 like this.
 Thanks, guys.
