Hi: I think they would love to fix this problem if they had the tools and
skills if they could.
But, be assured they are not just sitting around drinking beer and watching
football while their bread and butter goes bad.
About a decade ago WindowEyes was, in fact, the most solid and user friendly
screen reader on the market in my opinion.
Today with all the new technicals, and I am guessing the legacy design and
tools they now use, not so much.
But, even though I understand your frustration completely, to say they are
not concerned is just spouting your frustration.
Remember their jobs and their famlies future incomes depend on getting it
right if they can.
This is their profession, their livelyhoods and even their major source of
professional reputation so I don't think they are not trying.
But wanting to do something and having the ability to do something are 2
quite diferent things is something we were taught in Grad School and is, of
course, common sense for anyone who ever tried to design and implement any
larger project - think large and complex wedding perhaps and that is simple
compared to what AI Squared is looking at.
I too am frustrated but either have to live with what they can do or move on
and, so far, I am hanging in with WindowEyes since I have a decade or more
invested in learning the product and even working a little with scripting
and several of the group members and a couple of the AI Squared staff from
time to time.

Yes because if you try to shut down the system you will get an error message

Hello, I had been using a windows 7 laptop running wineyes 7.5, and it was
fairly stable. When I finally upgraded to wineyes 9.1, the new browse mode
could not perform the same tasks as the earlier version of wineyes. It kept
freezing up while I was on the web doing the same tasks as I had done while
running wineyes 7.5. Pressing control, alt, W did nothing. I had to do a
cold boot everytime. After using 9.1 for a couple of weeks, I had to
uninstall it and go back to an earlier version. This time I installed 8.4,
and it works as well as when I was running wineyes 7.5. So, to get the
benefits of the new browse mode, I would have to sacrifice stability. For
me, wineyes 9 was a waste of money. I can't even use it. I mean what good is
a silent screen reader. I have been using wineyes since the 1990's, and I
have never been this disappointed. The new browse mode is so dysfunctional
that it should be in beta.

Fwd: Re: Why does Window-Eyes just stop talking?

2015-09-14 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Hey Rod,

I'm pretty sure it is if you've set the power button to shut down. I've
never been able to find anything real about it from Microsoft. But if I
do the soft touch my system grinds a few pounds of beef before shutting
down. So I assume it's terminating all processes before the final
shutdown. Conversely, if I press and hold the power button it just shuts
right down.

But with that having had been said, I've never really had to be
concerned with it because my desktop, which is what I'm working on 95%
of the time, has a dedicated very small reboot button that's almost
inset beneath the large power button. It has to be pushed and held in
for a few seconds to force a reboot. But the result seems to be the same.

And as I've said, my lockups and loss of speech are so rare that I
haven't really given it much thought. And when it does happen I can
usually get out of it before having to reboot. And be it that memory
leaks are a given in Windows and programs I just reboot every few days
when things start getting sluggish. Then she's all revved up and ready
to roll again for another few days.

Regards,
Tom

Just a suggestion: if you know the keystrokes to shut down your
computer, just do them without Window-Eyes if it stops talking.
That's nicer to your computer than pressing and holding the power
button to force a shut-down.

Butch,

My experience has been the opposite of yours. I was finding that the
new dynamic web pages were becoming more difficult if not impossible to
read until the new brows mode was released. It is true that there
is a

minor stability issue with the new brows mode, but I know this issue is
being addressed. Remember, you can always hit alt control W to restart
speech if it stops. The new brows mode makes possible the reading of
constantly changing web content. Thank yew to the Window Eyes

I'd like to share some info, which I have posted before, but is worth

with regards to losing sound.
Firstly, with regards to the ding sound which is generated by the
windows operating

I some times lose sound after hearing the ding sound.
This happens in explorer, Firefox, internet explorer, wordpad, notepad.
My solution:
I unplug the usb connection for my headset, and WE7.2 starts speaking
via my external

In this case, windows lost sound to my headset, which is a known bug to
all windows
operating systems.
Now, another known bug for all windows operating systems is that
keyboard stops functioning.
I use a wireless keyboard, and when I lose sound, I hit windows key on
my usb keyboard
and sometimes my sound is back.
In this case, my wireless keyboard stopped functioning.
Now, sometimes the usb keyboard is not responding either.
In this case, I unplug the usb keyboard and wait for a ding sound, and
then I replug
the usb keyboard, and this sometimes does the trick, and keyboard is
working again.
However, sometimes the lost of sound is caused by a WE7.2 crash.
In this case, I use a batch file to unload all three gwmicro programs,
and restart
WE7.2, and I am back to normal.
Here is the instruction on how to create this batch file:

download pskill from:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896683
:
then copy and paste
pskill.exe
to
c:\windows
copy the following:
pskill wineyes.exe
pskill gwm32.exe
pskill speech32.exe
pskill bdisplay.exe
S
to a notepad document, and save it as:
kill_we.bat
then create a short-cut to the batch file and place it on the desktop.
then right click on the short-cut and press r for property
then tab to hot key and give it a hot key.
I use control alt k which stands for kill WE-- smile.

If gmail were identifying the messages as SPAm, the messages wouldn't even
make it to the Junk folder. It appears that either the mail client or a
personal mail filter is identifying the messages as junk.

some times you have to do a clean install not a upgrade. also some of the
set
files were out of date. includeing firefox and i e.
w e 9.2 is the latest version and it did have some bug fixes over w e 9.1.
the only problems i have had so far is with firefox.
w e and firefox will hang when i open the bookmark list in this case
control
alt w will not close w e until the two unhang.
if i turn off autoload before i open the bookmark list it works fine .
without
hanging.
***
i use a batch file to shut down w e with a command line. this is independent
of
the w e hot keys to reload. the /k command will kill w e.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\GW Micro\Window-Eyes\wineyes.exe" /k
this will shut down w e completely most of the time.
then you can reload with the regular hot keys.

I had to do a
cold
boot everytime. After using 9.1 for a couple of weeks, I had to uninstall it

and go back to an earlier version. This time I installed 8.4, and it works
as
well as when I was running wineyes 7.5. So, to get the benefits of the new
browse mode, I would have to sacrifice stability. For me, wineyes 9 was a
waste
of money. I can't even use it. I mean what good is a silent screen reader. I

have been using wineyes since the 1990's, and I have never been this
disappointed. The new browse mode is so dysfunctional that it should be in
beta.

If they didn't changed things in Windows 8 or 10 you can Windows-D to

you'll be on shutdown and only have to hit enter. If you want to reboot
(restart) hit R followed by enter.

Re: junk email

2015-09-14 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Well now, Mr. McGregor,

As an IT professional, that's information technology for the
intellectually challenged, I have reason to believe that your
intellectual content is indeed a strong contributor to this perplexing
problem.

However, I must, painful though it be, admit that there are certainly
other factors involved. In fact, many. All ISPs (Internet Service
Providers) have spam filters running on their servers. And most email
clients have them as well. And finally, GMail is rather notorious for
being rather steroidal in this area. Some are marked as spam and some as
junk. And no, this spam is not the spam that the immortal Monty Python
sang about so profoundly.

So the best thing to do is have your friends figure out how to mark your
messages as readable in order to fool at least their email client's
intellectual judgement into thinking they are indeed that. In the
business we refer to this as hoodwinking the system.

Good luck. Your ever so gracious technical adviser.
Doctor Tom

Windows mail, window explore ETC. Also, when this happens I can't even bring

I'm beginning to wonder if mixing new versions with old versions is such

retrieving messages from tb trash

2015-09-14 Thread Bud Schwab via Talk

Hi Gang,
I have lost some emails so I presume they are in the trash. In
Thunderbird how does one get to the trash folder and how can an email
be retrieved?

Thanks. I wish I knew more about what I'm doing, but I don't.

Hi, I have used Paypal recently with Windows 10 and WE 9.2 and I managed to
do it, but had to refresh a couple of times. However, I made a payment
through my bank on another website and it froze, so I wasn't sure whether or
not the payment had gone through. I am using WE 9.2 demo version and am
reluctant to buy the upgrade until these problems are sorted out. I have
been impressed with WE over the years but I think this latest version has
been released without the necessary preliminary checks.

If you have to use ctrl-alt-W to restart Window-Eyes, sometimes it helps
to move focus away from the problem program to a less-active program.
Try Windows-M before ctrl-Alt-W and see what happens. Also note that it
can take several seconds for the restart process to happen. If you only
have 2 GB of RAM, you will run into a lot of these systems. 4 GB is
plenty, in my experience.

some times you have to do a clean install not a upgrade. also some of the set
files were out of date. includeing firefox and i e.

w e 9.2 is the latest version and it did have some bug fixes over w e 9.1.
the only problems i have had so far is with firefox.
w e and firefox will hang when i open the bookmark list in this case control
alt w will not close w e until the two unhang.
if i turn off autoload before i open the bookmark list it works fine . without
hanging.

***
i use a batch file to shut down w e with a command line. this is independent of
the w e hot keys to reload. the /k command will kill w e.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GW Micro\Window-Eyes\wineyes.exe" /k
this will shut down w e completely most of the time.
then you can reload with the regular hot keys.

I too find I need to do a Cold Boot about half the time.

There are enough people who are having issues that it should not be

Glad you are having success with WE 9.X, at least someone is.

Butch,

My experience has been the opposite of yours. I was finding that the
new dynamic web pages were becoming more difficult if not impossible to
read until the new brows mode was released. It is true that there is a
minor stability issue with the new brows mode, but I know this issue is
being addressed. Remember, you can always hit alt control W to restart
speech if it stops. The new brows mode makes possible the reading of
constantly changing web content. Thank yew to the Window Eyes

Hi Alan,

So, if your focus is on the icons on the desktop, and you press Shift-Tab
twice, focus should then be brought to the Notification area.
If you then press right arrow twice, you should come to an icon entitled
"Notification center button".
If you do, then pressing spacebar on this button should open a dialog entitled
Action Center where you can tab through the most recent notifications, with
options to dismiss them.
As for the Start menu, I press the Start button, and press Shift-tab once and
this brings me to a button called Start, although, if you tab away and
shift-tab back to it, it becomes called All apps.
Pressing spacebar on this should open the list of apps listed alphabetically,
where you must press Enter on the item you wish to select before you can
interact with the options for that item.
I understand that all of this might not help, as it sounds like you're having
tracking issues, but I wanted to at least summarize the steps for finding the
controls you're seeking.

Hth,

Rod

Spoke with AI staff but they could not solve my problem. Using we9.2 32 home
premium and win 10 I cannot read the start menu or the notification list.

I installed start 10 to replace the win10 start menu with the win7 and this
works just fine but still no luck with notifications except if I use the mouse.

Re: Why does Window-Eyes just stop talking?

2015-09-14 Thread Lloyd Rasmussen via Talk
When starting up Word, you may have to press F6 a few times to get into the
correct pane. If you use Insert-Tab to get a list of particular items of
interest, it can take several seconds to generate the list and several more
seconds when you switch to a different type of object to list.
If you have to use ctrl-alt-W to restart Window-Eyes, sometimes it helps to
move focus away from the problem program to a less-active program. Try
Windows-M before ctrl-Alt-W and see what happens. Also note that it can take
several seconds for the restart process to happen. If you only have 2 GB of
RAM, you will run into a lot of these systems. 4 GB is plenty, in my
experience.

RE: Why does Window-Eyes just stop talking?

2015-09-14 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
It's easy to say AI Squared should fix the problem. Unfortunately, no
software company, no matter how large or how small, can replicate every
single possible combination of computer configurations and permutations.
Unless you work for a large corporation where each PC is a clone of your
coworker, it is highly unlikely that any WE user's PC is configured
identically to that of another WE user. There's Win 7, 8.0, 8.1 and 10.
There's a plethora of patches. Various browsers, email clients, versions of
Flash and java, etc., not to mention all the different web sites and
applications.
Software companies maintain a set of computers with the most likely software
operating systems and applications to use for testing their software and
simulating user environments. But even in these controlled environments, it
is impossible to perform every combination of possibilities. For example, is
an email client running when working in Word? Was a web browser running? If
so, what page was being displayed? The combinations are staggering. When you
experience WE not behaving as expected, writing that it's broke and AI
Squared should fix it is insufficient and counter productive.
For example, on my work PC, WE will occasionally stop talking. If I simply
wrote that in an email to AI Squared, there is not enough information for
them to even attempt to replicate the problem at their site. But if I
instead wrote:

WE occasionally stops talking. If I ALT-Tab away from the current program
and then back, WE will resume talking. Wile this is better, it is still
probably not enough. Now , if I add the fact that this only happens when
Lotus Notes is running and that every time Lotus Notes replicates it
database, WE stops talking, AI squared has something more tangible to work
with. Adding my PC configuration and what programs were running in the
background can also help.

Win 7 Pro 64-bit, 12 G RAM, Office 2010, Lotus Notes 6.5.

Usually, problems are due to a unique combination of events that has
occurred. If this were not the case, AI Squared would have most likely
experienced the issue during their testing. When you experience WE not
behaving as you expect, try to replicate it in a minimal environment. Reboot
your PC and try to get it to happen without other programs running in the
background. Slowily add more applications until you can get the problem to
reoccur. Write down the steps in detail. Now, attempt to replicate repeating
your steps. Yes, I know this is a lot of work. This is what software testers
do every day. It is not enough to tell someone that it ain't working as
expected. You need to thell them how to repeat your actions so that they can
see the same results. Only then can you expect a software company to expend
resources to fix your repeatable problem.

With outlook open, go to the Window-eyes control panel with control-backslash.
Press alt-a for apps and move down and see if you have Office enhance and
Outlook Enhance.
If you do, press alt to go back to the Window-eyes control panel.
If you do not, from the run dialog type/paste the following commands:

%wineyes%\outlookenhance.wepm
Press enter twice.
And
%wineyes%\officeenhance.wepm
Press enter twice.

Next Go to Your Outlook inbox.
Press alt-f, t, a, a, tab 4 times.
Down arrow to disabled items. Tab to the go button and press enter.
Do you have an item called Outlook Enhance. It may have some other characters
around it.
If you do, press space on it and shift-tab to an enable button. And press enter.
Finally tab to the close button and press enter.
Do the same if you are in the previous dialog.
If that fails, from the run dialog type/paste the following command:
%appdata%\gw micro\window-eyes\users\default\OutlookEnhanceAddin.vsto

This should reinstall the Outlook Enhance add on.

The next thing you can do is make sure the settings in KB2044 are followed.

quite diferent things is something we were taught in Grad School and is, of
course, common sense for anyone who ever tried to design and implement any
larger project - think large and complex wedding perhaps and that is simple
compared to what AI Squared is looking at.
I too am frustrated but either have to live with what they can do or move on
and, so far, I am hanging in with WindowEyes since I have a decade or more
invested in learning the product and even working a little with scripting
and several of the group members and a couple of the AI Squared staff from
time to time.
