Windows 10 start menu tutorial.

2016-02-29 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Press the Windows key.
You should hear "Cortana, search box, edit."

You can start typing the name of a program you wish to access. If it's
working correctly the choices should automatically be spoken. For
example, if you type "set" you should hear "Settings, Trusted Windows
store app."
If that's not what you want you should be able to continue typing or
arrow down through the list of suggestions and they should speak as you
do so. Press the Enter key to activate the highlighted item.
If they don't automatically speak you can hit the Read line hot key
after each arrow key.

This is a Windows bug. The folks at GW Micro (now AI Squared) can
correct me if I'm wrong, but it has been my impression for many years
that their policy is to try to get Microsoft to fix bugs first so they
don't have to spend the time doing it this week only to see it fixed in
the next Windows update. They already have enough workarounds to write
for things that are completely inaccessible let alone every
inconvenience, which by the way, sighted users have a fair share of as well.

Okay. Sermon over. Let's access the start menu.

Press the Windows key and do not enter any text in the search edit box.
Arrow up once. You should land on the "All Apps" button. Press Enter or
Space bar to activate it.

This will place you at the top of your programs list. On my system the
current entry is 3D Builder.
You can arrow down through the list. Currently all items say unselected.
But whatever you are on is selected. Press Enter to activate it.

There is no first letter jump to handling in this list. But there is an
alternative.

From any entry in the list Tab once. You will land on a group list. For
instance, if I tab from 3D Builder I land on 0 - 9 group, and if I tab
from calender I land on C group.

Arrow down or up to the group you want.
Press Shift-Tab to return to the main list. You will be on the first
item in the group you selected. Arrow up or down as needed.

Folders will say Program name folder collapsed, unselected, closed, e.g.
Window-Eyes folder, collapsed, unselected, closed.
Press Enter to open the folder. It will say "Window-Eyes unselected,
expanded." Arrow down and up within that folder.
To close that folder you must arrow back up to "Window-Eyes folder,
expanded" and press Enter to collapse it.

If you collapse a folder you can then again arrow up and down the main list.

What about Windows apps?
Press the Windows key, up arrow to the Apps button, and arrow right.
Apps are in a grid and we currently have no indication to the amount of
apps present or the layout. But it is a simple row and column grid. So
you can simply arrow right or down until you hit the wall and nothing is
voiced. This will show you how many rows and columns there are.
If you arrow left to the first column and then arrow left again you will
go back into the main start menu. Depending on which row of apps you
were in you may go back to the Apps button, the Power button, or the
Account picture button.
By the way, I've never used that power button. From the desktop the old
fashioned Alt-F4 still works and gives you all the options, i.e.
shutdown, sleep, restart, etc.

Whether you're on an app or a program the Application key or Shift-F10
will open a context menu with various options.

There's probably something I've forgotten. But hopefully this will get
you started and more comfortable with the Windows 10 start menu. Yes, I
went into it kicking and screaming. But now that I know how to use it I
don't mind it at all. Although I am still hoping for quick letter jump
to handling. Perhaps one day.

Regards,
Tom

Re: Possible solution to slow computer and crashes

2016-02-29 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
Audio enhancements is by nature going to slow down any computer whether
it has a screen-reader on it or not. This is because every audio event
is being intercepted and processed before it is output.

It's simply much more noticeable with a screen-reader because we have a
constant stream of speech as compared to the occasional little bleeps
and bloops and dings and dongs the sighted user has. Therefore every
speech event is delayed for that processing, which creates a bottleneck
in data flow. Any system is only as good as its weakest link.

Audio enhancement is nothing more than an attempt to compensate for the
3 dollar speakers in tablets, laptops, and those that come with desktops
or in monitors.

Tom

why different versions of fire fox work differently with window eyes?

2016-02-29 Thread crw9599 via Talk
Hello. Has anyone been playing with fire fox 44.0.2 for the past month
or so, it is really slow with window eyes, well I decided to down grade
to 42.0 and the response is better with window eyes, am wondering why?
For now I do have the version on my machine just had to get rid of that
current version plus uninstalling fire fox enhance since you can not use
adobe flash player for now. I know that AISquared is working hard on the
next version of Window eyes. Keep up the good work.

start a command prompt as admin
then type net user followed by your username and then *
so if your user name is administrator the command would be
net user administrator *
then when it says enter password, you enter nothing and hit return twice,
you will now not have a user password.

Note this only works in local accounts

This is just a thought for the app developers out there.
Someone could write a Window-eyes app to create a virtual ribbon.
Having said that, I messed with an Office extension about a year ago that
turned the ribbons into menus. When I went to Office 2016 it stopped
working and I haven't been back to it.

I can't remember the name of the extension though.

it makes the ribbons in Microsoft office 2007 upwards into a menu bar.
That is a feature that every screen reader should have. Window-Eyes
should have a virtual ribbons like feature.

Admitedly, I don't have Windows 10, but often when my computer wakes up,
I am presented with the log-in screen. I never enter the password; all I
do is press the Submit button, and I'm at the desktop.

Maybe this will work for you.

Peace.

Hi: I just responded to a message on this list and got a response from the
AI Squared support list.
Please don't include list addresses external to your own address or this
list in the to address when crafting a message since responding to your
message will then generate messages to inappropriate people for whom the
message was not (directly) intended.
I don't want to have to read every to address carefully when responding to a
list message and I don't have to do this on any other list I am on so please
have some list manners.
If it was an oversight, cool, that happens but if it was a way to push
messages to support that is an inappropriate use of the list me thinks.

Subject: Itunes Enhance 1.1 App update

Hi everyone,

For those who have enjoyed the functionality offered by the Itunes Enhance
app, I wanted to share that my newest version offers improvements which I
think you'll enjoy.

Here's an excerpt from the documentation, which summarizes these changes:

Improvements in Itunes Enhance 1.1

In version 1.1 of Itunes Enhance, the functionality of the
previously-defined hotkeys has been modified; now, depending on the state
of the current track, each hotkey speaks the elapsed time, while the
PlayPause hotkey will speak detailed track information; Further, the
rewind and fast forward hotkeys have been modified to act as independent
toggles which can pause and resume playback, allowing for more efficient
seeking.

As well, a hotkey has been added which opens a dialog similar to that
provided in the Winamp media player for entering the time to jump to
within the current track; as in Winamp, it is set to Control-J, by
default, and, of course, it can be changed.

All the best,

Rod Hutton

RE: Screen capturing?

2016-02-29 Thread Van Lant, Robin via Talk
The built in way to do this is to press Alt and Print Screen on your keyboard,
which copies a picture of your screen to the clipboard. Then you go to an
email or word document and hit Control V to paste that picture. In my
experience, this only captures a screen shot of the active window though. So,
if you are on a webpage, it should work fine. If you get a pop up error
message, it might only capture that error message and not the image behind the
message. There is a tool in Windows 7 call the snipping tool that also grabs
images, but I haven't figured out how to work it because I think you draw a box
around what you want to capture on screen.

If you have a standard plugged in keyboard, the print screen button is
typically within a set of 3 keys up on the top row to the right of the function
keys. It's typically the first button on the left within the set of three
keys. Turn on the Window Eyes key describer using Insert F1 and then see if
you can find the print screen button. Remember to hit Alt with this button to
capture the image. You'll hear "Print Screen" if you have captured an image.

Subject: Screen capturing?

Hi, I want to mainly be able to take a picture of the screen, especially when
I'm having some troubles on the web with a website. How would I go about doing
this? I think when I go to a website, I would like to be able to get some
sighted assistance on its layout, images etc.

Also is it possible to isolate a certain part of a website like the optin boxes
or forms and just capture that so I can email a picture to someone for help? I
wouldn't want to show my desktop or anything like that, just the website or a
small part of a website.

Is there any software that would do this?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Andre

Agreed. I'm not trying to be harsh but I've noticed this about a lot of his

ribbon feature that would restore the old menu bar to Microsoft products for
those who want it or, more accurately, make the ribbons act like the old
menu bars.

The JAWS one isn't on by default. You have to go into startup wizard and
enable it.

Personally, I see no problem using the ribbons in Microsoft products. The
ribbons are not going anywhere. However, I do think, that if necessary a
virtual ribbon menu should be an option, it should not be by default.

Screen capturing?

2016-02-29 Thread Andre via Talk
Hi, I want to mainly be able to take a picture of the screen, especially
when I'm having some troubles on the web with a website. How would I go
about doing this? I think when I go to a website, I would like to be able to
get some sighted assistance on its layout, images etc.

Also is it possible to isolate a certain part of a website like the optin
boxes or forms and just capture that so I can email a picture to someone for
help? I wouldn't want to show my desktop or anything like that, just the
website or a small part of a website.

Is there any software that would do this?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Andre

Itunes Enhance 1.1 App update

2016-02-29 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hi everyone,

For those who have enjoyed the functionality offered by the Itunes Enhance app,
I wanted to share that my newest version offers improvements which I think
you'll enjoy.
Here's an excerpt from the documentation, which summarizes these changes:

Improvements in Itunes Enhance 1.1

In version 1.1 of Itunes Enhance, the functionality of the previously-defined
hotkeys has been modified; now, depending on the state of the current track,
each hotkey speaks the elapsed time, while the PlayPause hotkey will speak
detailed track information; Further, the rewind and fast forward hotkeys have
been modified to act as independent toggles which can pause and resume
playback, allowing for more efficient seeking.

As well, a hotkey has been added which opens a dialog similar to that provided
in the Winamp media player for entering the time to jump to within the current
track; as in Winamp, it is set to Control-J, by default, and, of course, it can
be changed.

All the best,

Rod Hutton

Thing is with that is sooner or later we will be forced to learn the ribbon
because there won't be any other way. Might as well get used to it now
before it gets more and more complicated.

I am retiring.

My career in the Assistive Technology industry started in the late 80's,
working for Computer Aids Corp. for a couple years, where I met Doug Geoffray.
Then I partnered with Doug to launch GW Micro in 1990 which operated for 24
years, followed by our merging into Ai Squared in 2014. So now, after almost
28 years in the AT industry, it's time for me to take a break. I will be
retired from Ai Squared after this week. No worries - the rest of the Fort
Wayne office and staff will continue as normal - whatever normal means .

I'm not very active on this list but I look at many of the posts and I know
many of your names even if we rarely talk on the phone or meet in person. I
will continue to support Ai Squared and if the opportunity presents itself who
knows - I might come back for a few special projects from time to time. Thank
you very much for your support and friendship.

One thing I understand - this industry is very different from all others. The
people I know not only want to stay active, employed or stay in business but
they also want to make the world a better place by providing quality products
and services. You should all be proud of whatever contribution you personally
make.

Thank you all again for your friendship and loyalty over the many years.

Take care,

Dan
