I'm not trying to KILL business for another blind entrepreneur; however, I
will say without mincing words that no one, especially those of us in the
United States and Canada, should ever pay a RED cent for this course!

For a start, my buddy and brother, Mr. Raul Gallegos, did record some
Jaws-related titbits for all to download and has never charged a cent for
it. Second, questions can be asked here or on some other mailing lists
frequented by the blind, and the good folks who are better gurus than I at
just about everything will STEP UP TO THE PLATE and lend a helping hand
with

smiles.

Now, if the training has to do with WRITING JAWS SCRIPTS, I can understand
paying for that! In that instance, the recording should already be done,
a

download link provided so I can pay for and grab it and work slowly on it
till I have learned enough to get stuff done.

No! No Window-Eyes user should be milked a penny more for transitioning
to

Jaws! It's wrong in my books. I'll stay on this list for as long as is
possible; I'll do all I can to help folks with using Jaws; if I don't have
answers to particular questions, I'll go find them and come back here with
workable solutions and tips at NO cost! Even when I transition completely
to Android by September, I'll still be here to help folks who need help
with

Jaws. Again, no Window-Eyes user MUST BE MILKED OUT of a cent for
transitioning!

Sincerely,
Olusegun

You are right Tom.
Mr. Hartgen has every right to charge for something he is spending time and
effort on. And, of course, each person has the right to decide if it is worth
the money or not. Some people such as myself are very comfortable learning JAWS
on there own, but for those who want the extra training and are willing to pay
for it, I say go for it!
Very few things in life worth having are free. The fact is that WindowEyes is a
thing of the past and each person needs to make there own decision as to how
best to move forward.

Re: [BlindTech] New Blog Post: Will VFO Acquire NV Access?

2017-05-29 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
This is the first I've heard of the "highly debated" topic of VFO
acquiring NVDA. To me it sounds more like a blogger trying to get more
hits on his site.

NVDA has long had funding from government, corporate, and charitable
foundations. But the more users donate the more progress will be made.
Unfortunately I doubt that many who can well afford it give anything in
this shameful me me me world of today.

Just my politically incorrect two cents worth.

Chris G.'s point is an excellent one, though, i.e., NVDA needs bucks.

Dear all,
‘Will VFO Acquire NVDA?’ has been a highly debated topic in the
blindness community in recent times. Find out the answer to this
inquiry with all the cogent reasoning, justification and arguments you
may desire as I explore all the possibilities and probabilities in my
new blog post.
‘Now, let me restate the question of the hour in a simplified form –
will the VFO-Group, owners of the Freedom Scientific made JAWS screen
reader, after phasing out its subsidiary AI Squared’s Window Eyes
screen reader, venture out (caught the pun?) to buy out NV Access and
its free and open source NVDA screen reader, and thereby establish an
absolute monopoly as far as Windows screen readers go?’

Hi Raul,

While listening to your very useful tutorials, I noticed that when you
are arrowing through the Desktop icons, the voice is announcing the
index number of each icon. e.g. 8 of 27

Where is the setting located so I can change Jaws to do the same on my
system?

Thanks

I have to admit that while I've been connected with Rehab Services in
several states. They have always pushed Jaws. I didn't learn much about WE
until myself and a friend were building a website back in 2004. There were
several things that I just could not do with Jaws, but he was able to do
with WE. So I became a WE user in 2004 and haven't used Jaws again untill
now.

OK. The real truth is that we have been shafted by the company who made
JAWS, pluss the blind organizations. The true reason why organizations
favored JAWS above Window-Eyes was because it brought them more profit. The
venders who sold Window-Eyes, supernova etc. always put JAWS at the top of
their lists. Plus the venders deliberately lied about Window-Eyes too. As an
example, their was a girlfriend of a list member, named Carol who was on the

recommended it over JAWS. She got Window-Eyes no problems. Then, she went

I'm not trying to KILL business for another blind entrepreneur; however, I
will say without mincing words that no one, especially those of us in the
United States and Canada, should ever pay a RED cent for this course!

For a start, my buddy and brother, Mr. Raul Gallegos, did record some
Jaws-related titbits for all to download and has never charged a cent for
it. Second, questions can be asked here or on some other mailing lists
frequented by the blind, and the good folks who are better gurus than I at
just about everything will STEP UP TO THE PLATE and lend a helping hand with
smiles.

Now, if the training has to do with WRITING JAWS SCRIPTS, I can understand
paying for that! In that instance, the recording should already be done, a
download link provided so I can pay for and grab it and work slowly on it
till I have learned enough to get stuff done.

No! No Window-Eyes user should be milked a penny more for transitioning to
Jaws! It's wrong in my books. I'll stay on this list for as long as is
possible; I'll do all I can to help folks with using Jaws; if I don't have

I'm not even going to be buying this course by this guy. Besides, I know
the whole truth of why JAWS was promoted over Window-Eyes and it is not just
my opinion, it is the truth of many Window-Eyes users.

Subject: RE: Announcement: Brian Hartgen Training Course, Over Easy:The
Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS! Being Held Online 6/1/17 at 2pm Eastern,
7pm UK Time

I'll stay on this list for as long as is
possible; I'll do all I can to help folks with using Jaws; if I don't have
answers to particular questions, I'll go find them and come back here with
workable solutions and tips at NO cost! Even when I transition completely
to Android by September, I'll still be here to help folks who need help with
Jaws. Again, no Window-Eyes user MUST BE MILKED OUT of a cent for
transitioning!

Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado

Re: End of Life Message

2017-05-29 Thread Raul A. Gallegos via Talk
Hello Pam, I disagree. Remember, not all Window-Eyes users are
subscribed here or to the various news and announcement lists. So, if
they didn't do that as you suggest, how would those users know that
Window-Eyes will no longer be updated? I know it must feel like a slap
in the face each time you see that message, but trust me, this is to
reach those people who don't get the announcements in other ways.

I hope this helps clear it up.

Hi.
remember, no one is saying you have to stop using Window-eyes. If it
works,
keep right on using it as long as you can! I also have JAWS once
again on
this machine but very rarely do I ever use it. it's there if I ever
need it.

Window-eyes is going to be my primary screenreader until it doesn't work
anymore.

Hello List,

I turn Window-eyes on manually. Yesterday after my computer almost

End of Life Notification. Really depressing. I wish they had just
said window-eyes Discontinuation Notice - it would have been less
ominous.

Fortunately, my husband revived my Window7 machine and Window-eyes
still works. I need to use Jaws more often so I can learn it, but I
just can't bring myself to do so when Window-Eyes works with programs
like Vipre and Jaws doesn't. Also, Window-Eyes has a setting which
makes it work in safe mode and Jaws doesn't.

Re: Tutorial Question

Short answer is that Raul's tutorials come from the perspective of a
Window-Eyes user where Jaws tutorials give the impression that you might
be a beginning non-screen reader user.

Dear all,
‘Will VFO Acquire NVDA?’ has been a highly debated topic in the blindness
community in recent times. Find out the answer to this inquiry with all the
cogent reasoning, justification and arguments you may desire as I explore all
the possibilities and probabilities in my new blog post.
‘Now, let me restate the question of the hour in a simplified form – will the
VFO-Group, owners of the Freedom Scientific made JAWS screen reader, after
phasing out its subsidiary AI Squared’s Window Eyes screen reader, venture out
(caught the pun?) to buy out NV Access and its free and open source NVDA screen
reader, and thereby establish an absolute monopoly as far as Windows screen
readers go?’

Re: how do you move a file with w/e

2017-05-29 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
It's Control+x to cut to clipboard. The file won't move until you paste
it.
If you don't want deleted files in the recycle bin, hit shift+delete and
they're permanently gone.

I'm not trying to KILL business for another blind entrepreneur; however, I will
say without mincing words that no one, especially those of us in the United
States and Canada, should ever pay a RED cent for this course!

For a start, my buddy and brother, Mr. Raul Gallegos, did record some
Jaws-related titbits for all to download and has never charged a cent for it.
Second, questions can be asked here or on some other mailing lists frequented
by the blind, and the good folks who are better gurus than I at just about
everything will STEP UP TO THE PLATE and lend a helping hand with smiles.

Now, if the training has to do with WRITING JAWS SCRIPTS, I can understand
paying for that! In that instance, the recording should already be done, a
download link provided so I can pay for and grab it and work slowly on it till
I have learned enough to get stuff done.

No! No Window-Eyes user should be milked a penny more for transitioning to
Jaws! It's wrong in my books. I'll stay on this list for as long as is
possible; I'll do all I can to help folks with using Jaws; if I don't have
answers to particular questions, I'll go find them and come back here with
workable solutions and tips at NO cost! Even when I transition completely to
Android by September, I'll still be here to help folks who need help with Jaws.
Again, no Window-Eyes user MUST BE MILKED OUT of a cent for transitioning!

Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado

Let's hear it, why is that?
And I just had a funny thing happen with JAWS, I did the hole control+y to go
to a folder in outlook, and I selected my inbox. It told me -2 of 1014
messages. So, it's okay for JAWS to report negative numbers? lol

2017-05-29 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Is the price lower than you expected?

Just kidding.

While I am curious to hear Mr. Hartgen’s approach, my curiosity isn’t enough
for me to plop down $38.50 or whatever the exchange rate is—I’m still coming up
with the money I hope to have to migrate to JAWS in the first place, and that
isn’t a done deal yet.

Not to mention I get all the use I need out of Window-Eyes, and JAWS that I
need right now. I’m pretty much self-taught. I’ve never paid for computer
instruction. I’ve even helped one or two sighted people out of jams.

No, I don’t think I know it all. I can always learn something new—that’s why I
like lists like this one.

I, also applaud Raul’s work in helping folks transition.

I even think the folks at VFO are trying to put as good a spin on it as they
can. The lady I spoke to at VFO was quite nice, and they seem willing to work
with us on our problems.

I like using NVDA in win amp. When your playing music and hit B to play
the next song, you don't hear the letter B blast through your speaker.
So far I find that Jaws sucks in Thunderbird! Window eyes isn't much
better as it usually repeats lines already read. But at least it lets
you know where in the message count your at. NVDA works okay in TB.

Dear all,
‘Will VFO Acquire NVDA?’ has been a highly debated topic in the blindness
community in recent times.

Let's hear it, why is that?
And I just had a funny thing happen with JAWS, I did the hole control+y to go

Sincerely,
Olusegun

Re: how do you move a file with w/e

2017-05-29 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
I have never actualy tried to move a file. What I do is this. I highlight
the file or files I want to move using the cursor keys. I then press
CONTROL+C to copy the material to the clipboard. I then move to the
directory in which I wish to place the file or files. I then paste them
there with CONTROL+V. Next, I go back to the directory where the original
file is and delete it. This puts the file in the Recycle Bin. I know there
is a way to actually move a file, but at least this way, I am assured that
my file is not lost or destroyed somewhere in the process. If worse comes to
worse, I can restore the file from the recycle bin. Of course, when I am
totally satisfied, I empty the Recycle Bin. Note that these are all Windows
keystroke that should work with any screen reader.

RE: [Blindest] New Blog Post: Will VFO Acquire NV Access?

2017-05-29 Thread Darrell Bowles via Talk
Have you tried your beloved JAWS with Microsoft edge? And, I can tell you that
NVDA works very well with it. Also, has anyone tried and seriously played with
Narrator in windows 10? While far from perfect, I've tested it on some complex
websites, and it works quite well, though there are some features missing.
Also, narrator works with braille. Part of your problem with internet explorer
may just be internet explorer. I can't tell you the number of times that IE
wants to lock up just because it's that outdated and messed up.
Thanks,
Darrell

I agree. One reason it is not as good there aren't nearly the number of
add-ons it has trouble with internet explorer when set to a specific home

One thing to keep in mind, if users and agencies don't donate to NVDA and can
go away just like Window-eyes.

Nothing is for sure accept death and taxes.

Hi,
HJ Pad is a lot like Wordpad, but it has classical menus instead of ribbons.
The spell checker by just pressing F7 works very well, just like in MS word
earlier versions.

Brice, HJ Pad, if memory serves, is more or less like the Notepad or Wordpad
you already have in Windows. Not so sure you need it, but, hey, go play

Too many silly bells and whistles in Jaws if I dare say so! Example:
Research It: Silly; you can do the exact same thing using Google's search
engine; so, why the duplicity?

David, when you save the file using HJ pad, does it go into the doc folder?

No WindowEyes is not a disease we must get rid of. I will keep both screen
readers as long as I can. Window-Eyes works much better with Winamp and
Windows Live Mail. Additionally with JAWS, I could not copy text from the
internet into Windows Explorer to name a file or folder. I can do so with

FW: Announcement: Brian Hartgen Training Course, Over Easy:The Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS! Being Held Online 6/1/17 at 2pm Eastern,7pm UK Time

2017-05-29 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi list:

Any of you seen this?

I won’t comment either way on it, just forwarding it.

New Training Course. Over Easy: The Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS!

Introduction.

It's no secret that sales of the Window-Eyes screen-reader have ended. The
owning company VFO are offering JAWS for Windows as a replacement for
Window-Eyes users. But how do you get started with JAWS? How easy is it to
transition from one screen-reader to another? How do you accomplish some of the
most basic tasks you would want to do with your screen-reader?
All these questions and more will be answered in our training course, Over
Easy: The Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS.
During the session, lasting approximately 90 minutes, Brian Hartgen will show
you the basics of how to use JAWS for windows and give you plenty of useful
tips and tricks along the way. Best of all, you'll be able to keep a recording
of the Webinar and get a text document containing keystrokes and a summary of
essential points for later reference. The Webinar will also give you plenty of
opportunity to ask questions.

Brian Hartgen has been using JAWS for over 20 years. He is also a beta tester
for JAWS, MAGic and ZoomText Fusion, has completed the advanced JAWS scripting
course at VFO's Headquarters in florida and has completed JAWS certification in
2017. So not only is his knowledge of JAWS as current as it can be, but he came
to the JAWS screen-reader from a Window-Eyes background.

The course will be delivered online via our accessible Talking Communities
server. If you have not used this conferencing software before, you will
receive instructions prior to the commencement of the course. This software
allows for the delivery of the presentation, including the output from the
screen-reading software in high quality audio.

What Will I Learn?

The cool thing about courses from Hartgen Consultancy is that to some extent
they are tailored to the user's requirements. So topics can be quickly worked
through if you ask. However, you will learn:
• How to use the JAWS Startup Wizard.
• Adjusting the rate of speech and typing echo.
• Getting help.
• Keystrokes to get information quickly.
• Reading documents.
• Useful JAWS features in Microsoft word.
• The basics of browsing the internet.
• How to get more help.

Costing.

The Over Easy: The Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS course is priced £30 which
is currently $38. It will be held on Thursday 1 June at 7 PM UK time which is 2
PM US Eastern.
If you cannot make this date, don't worry, you can still obtain the archive
shortly after the event.
Payment should reach us by the morning of Thursday 1 June.
Purchase Over Easy: The Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS Online.
Alternatively, anyone who would like to take part in the course should register
their interest by sending an Email to j...@hartgen.org, whereupon a fully
accessible electronic invoice will be sent to you which can be paid through
PayPal or any major credit or debit card. Orders can also be placed by
telephone:
• Call us (from within the UK): 02920-850298.
• Call us (from the United States): 415-871-0626.
• Call us (from any other country): (+44)2920-850298.
If you would like to read the views from participants of our previous courses,
please Visit our Training area.
The Talking Communities chat room and recording of the Webinar, made available
after the event, can be accessed through a secure area of our website which is
only available to course participants.

Summary.

For some people, it can be hard to move from one screen-reader to another,
particularly if you've been using Window-Eyes for very many years. But here is
a chance to get your skills to a point where you can work with JAWS
effectively, and use that knowledge to learn more as you go. Join us to find
out what JAWS can do for you!

Hello Nick. I am totally behind you on supporting NVDA, and. I just
switched to NVDA from Window-Eyes a couple weeks ago, and it's a fantastic
product! Like Window-Eyes and JAWS, NVDA now has a certification program so
when can become certified in it and become an NVDA trainer and I hope many
Window-Eyes users who choose to do so will take up this opportunity in
becoming NVDA certified. I know I am going to be. NVDA has a whole lot of

Hi,

Oh my goodness Roflol, lmao! This has got to be one of the greatest wakeup
messages I've ever seen! Hilarious! I haven't written in quite some time
primarily because when freedom scientific purchased AI squared, I could see
the writing on the wall. I certainly will miss working with window eyes and
will probably still love it because it gave me something no screen reader
ever did, a career.

In July of last year I started working with NVDA and am contributing as much
of my window eyes knowledge to new users that are making the transition from
Window Eyes to NVDA. I personally would like to invite anyone in this
community to join me and my friends of the NVDA community and help us with
our mission to be the best screen reader not just for a few of us but all of
us users of adaptive technology. Another one of my colleagues has put it

Many of you may have heard about the end of sales for Window-Eyes screen
reader. In the early 2000's, Window-Eyes was considered a good alternative
to JAWS for Windows when it came to using Microsoft Windows with screen
readers. With the acquisition of GW Micro by AI Squared, which in turn was
acquired by VFO last year, many analysts predicted the end of life for this
screen reader, which occurred on May 15, 2017.
This news has huge implications for the global NVDA community, as well as
opening opportunities for us. As many Window-Eyes users are eligible to
upgrade to JAWS 18, some would choose to switch to NVDA. At the moment
several individuals are producing tutorials aimed at helping Window-Eyes
users transition to NVDA with ease. But users aren't the only members of the
Window-Eyes community: with the end of sales for Window-Eyes, many scripts
(or apps) for Window-Eyes became unsupported, and it won't be matter of time
before they become part of history.
In hopes of inviting Window-Eyes users and developers to join the NVDA
ecosystem (provided they are willing), I'd like to propose a community-wide
initiative under the umbrella of Project Contact Lenses. Although this
project may take different forms, the overall aim is to educate Window-Eyes
community that NVDA is a viable option for many people, and a chance for
writers of Window-Eyes apps to port their code to the add-ons
infrastructure. Other activities may include equipping some Window-Eyes app
developers to contribute code to NVDA Core, producing promotional materials,
organizing online seminars and so on. Although the bulk of this project is
aimed at Window-Eyes users, the ultimate goal is to embrace users of other
screen readers to taste NVDA.
Some of the activities I plan to do include:
. An online seminar or an intensive lab on creating add-ons and/or getting
started with contributing code to NVDA Core.
. Talking to Window-Eyes app writers about possibility of open-sourcing
their code and helping them port apps to the add-ons infrastructure.
Some of the things the global community can do include:
. Producing transition materials.
. Contacting Window-Eyes distributors in your local community and inviting
them to try NVDA.
. Contacting script writers regarding apps and proposing add-ons.
. Holding seminars aimed at users of other screen readers 9mostly
Window-Eyes users) on how to master various NVDA concepts such as object
navigation, browse mode and others.
As for the duration of this initiative, I don't know, but I expect this to
be at least several months or more.
Comments are appreciated.
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: how do you move a file with w/e

2017-05-29 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk

This is a Windows command, so instructions will work with any screen reader:

place your cursor on the file you want to move anc press control plus x
to cut the file from its current list

move to the place you wan the file and press control plus v to paste it.

If you are not sure, you can always use control-c to copy the file
instread of control-x and once the file is verified that you have moved
it, go back to the original folder and delete the original. There is no
need to have two copies on your drive.

If you were on the window eyes window, you would have been asked if you
wanted to shut down window eyes when you hit alt f4. Otherwise, it would be
insert control f4. Pam.

Not to get into a nit picky argument, but some here say control f4, and
others say control insert f4. Why? That said, I just tried alt f4 and I
got the promp to shut down WE.

The Easist way to close Window Eyes is to Press CTRL-Backslash which
brings up the Control Pannel. Press Alt-F to bring up the File Menu.
Then up arrow twice to get to Exit Window Eyes, and Press the Enter Key.

Then Press the Enter Key once more to go with the OK Button.
